Upgrade to networkmanager breaks networkmanager applets

The newest version of network manager breaks the applets - neither nm-applet nor knetworkmanager can connect via dbus. dhcdbd neither for that matter. What gives? I can' t diagnose it any further than that it is a dbus problem since I don' t know anything about dbus - comething which I am busy remedying now...

Ok wait, I added myself to the network group.. Yes, I can now "use" network manager.  But it doesn't find any wireless networks!  It doesn't even know (I presume) that I have a wireless card!
Any help will be appreciated.
Once I added myself to the network group everything worked fine.
What is the output of iwconfig? Does it list your wireless card? If not, then check if the module is loaded for your card. If you use nsidwrapper, check to see what ndiswrapper -l gives you. You'll have to give a little more info than what you gave. What card/chipset do you have for starters? Post the output of lspci.

  • NetworkManager applet broken after upgrading from 0.8.1-2 to 0.8.2-2

After upgrading both networkmanager and network-manager-applet, i am unable to connect to any wifi networks.
    [2010-12-15 23:22] upgraded networkmanager (0.8.1-1 -> 0.8.3-0.20101130)
    [2010-12-15 23:23] upgraded network-manager-applet (0.8.1-2 -> 0.8.2-2)
The applet detects and shows networks, but then keeps trying to connect indefinitely without success.
    What's the problem here?
I'm not the only one having this problem:
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=109413
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=109818
So it seems most likely a problem with nm-applet only working if you run it as root (sudo nm-applet).
I have no experience with this area. Any idea what might be wrong? Perhaps something to do with PAM?

Aah, you're right. Sorry. Haven't heard anything regarding this though, and it's a fairly distracting problem.

  • Two instances of NetworkManager applet

I'm running Arch with Xfce. Fully updated. After an update a couple of days ago, I'm finding I've got a second instance of the NetworkManager applet on the Xfce panel.
I've looked through the systemd setup, but so far I've no idea what is triggering the second instance. NetworkManager.service is listed as a requirement of multi-user target, but I've not found anything else listing it to account for the second instance.
It doesn't seem to affect performance, but it is annoying. Anyone have any idea what I can do to track down the cause?
    Paul.

    remove the one in  ~/.config/autostart/
Edit: I only stated the obvious above not knowing how you start your Xfce session, nm-applet uses polkit so you may want to check your ~/.xinitrc if your starting that way and edit
    exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch --auto-syntax --exit-with-session startxfce4
    to
    exec startxfce4

  • [Solved] Multiple tun0 entries created in NetworkManager applet

    Hey all,
I switched over to Arch from Fedora about 3 months ago when i installed my new SSD.  Having never used arch before, I'm really loving it, no problems so far... just need to get to used to typing pacman -S rather than yum install.
I'm hoping someone might be able to help me here.  I've just got the OpenVPN client up & working - I am able to connect via cli & using the NetworkManager applet in KDE to my VPN server & both establish connections successfully.  All good there.
The issue I have is that when I connect to the the VPN server using either method above, a new tun0 device is created every time in the "connection editor" config window of the NetworkManager app in my system tray in KDE - so currently I have 4 different tun0 devices listed.  I'm using the tray app - kdeplasma-applets-plasma-nm.  It's a bit annoying as keep having to delete all these tun0 devices.
I can only see the below in the journalctl logs when I disconnect - so there are no errors being thrown...
    Dec 14 18:40:54 jarvis.home avahi-daemon[1051]: Withdrawing workstation service for tun0.
    Dec 14 18:40:54 jarvis.home NetworkManager[786]: <info> (tun0): device state change: activated -> unmanaged (reason 'removed') [100 10 36]
    Dec 14 18:40:54 jarvis.home NetworkManager[786]: <info> (tun0): deactivating device (reason 'removed') [36]
    Dec 14 18:40:55 jarvis.home dbus[566]: [system] Activating via systemd: service name='org.freedesktop.nm_dispatcher' unit='dbus-org.freedesktop.nm-dispatcher.service'
Am I missing something here or has anyone ever seen this before?
    Thanks

I have a workaround for this problem. I created the script /etc/NetworkManager/dispatcher.d/tun containing the following code:
    #!/bin/bash
    [[ ${1::3} == tun ]] && [[ $2 == down ]] && /usr/bin/nmcli connection delete $1
    exit 0

  • Networkmanager applet without KDE or Gnome

I'm looking for a NetworkManager applet that will not depend on Gnome or KDE (GTK or Qt only is ok) to use for my awesome desktop.
    Supporting NM 0.7 if possible.

Well, wicd might be an alternative... I wished it would support PPP, VPNs etc. like the NM 0.7 does now.
I'm using Knetworkmanager now, the KDE3 version (it was removed from Arch but I had it installed before that), but I'd like to get rid of KDE3 apps.
Gnome-network-manager OTOH has Gnome dependencies I'd like to get rid-of too (Gconf, Orbit2).

  • NetworkManager applet doesn't prompt for VPN secret for non-root user

I'm using NetworkManager in GNOME DE. When logged in as non-root user, I'm unable to connect to a vpnc profile.
    * As non-root, I am able to add/remove/alter/connect to WiFi network profiles with no trouble.
    * As non-root, I am also able to add/remove/alter vpnc profiles.
    * However, the VPN group key and VPN user password do not appear to store properly when adding/editing the profile as non-root. I can enter them, but when I bring the dialog back up, they are always blank. Even so, I can see an entry for vpnc in the Gnome keyring.
    * When I slide the on/off switch to try to connect with the vpn profile, there is no prompt for the VPN group key or password. The switch just slides back to Off immediately and I can see the text 'authentication required' flash briefly where it shows the connection status. After that flashes, the connection status is back to 'Not connected'. No error message displays.
    * If I sign in as root, there are no problems. The VPN 'secrets' will save properly in the dialog, and also if I leave them blank, I'm prompted for them when I activate the connection.
    * Creating the connection as 'root' is not an option, as this doesn't appear in profile list when signing on as non-root.
Any ideas on where to look or what to check? As mentioned above, non-root can maintain WiFi connections through NetworkManager just fine, so the problem appears localized to VPN 'secrets'. Also other applications (i.e. Evolution) have no trouble in dealing with authentication.
    I do have polkit installed:
    extra/polkit 0.110-2 [installed]
Application development toolkit for controlling system-wide privileges
    extra/polkit-kde 0.99.0-2
Daemon providing a polkit authentication UI for KDE
    extra/polkit-qt 0.103.0-2
A library that allows developers to access PolicyKit API with a nice Qt-style API
    community/polkit-gnome 0.105-1 [installed]
PolicyKit integration for the GNOME desktop

    Update/more information on this...
My typical/preferred setup for my VPNs is to save the VPN group key, but to be prompted for my VPN user password on each connect. So, this is how I was trying to setup in the applet. Interestingly, I have found that if I save BOTH of the 'secrets' to the keyring, then I can connect!
The behavior is still as above in the dialog -- both secrets are blank if I edit the connection, although they are present in the Gnome keyring. As long as they are BOTH there, I can connect fine. But, if I have either of them set to 'Always Ask', then I am not prompted for them and the connection fails.
Although I can work with this, I would certainly still like to figure out what is going on and fix it, as it does bother me that it works that way:
    * Why can't the dialog redisplay my secrets when I edit a connection as non-root?
    * Why doesn't Always Ask work to prompt me for secrets when running as non-root?
Any ideas? I've used the Gnome/NetworkManager/vpnc combination on other desktops (this is my first Arch), and I have never seen anything like this.

  • How to use networkmanager-applet to creat wireless internet sharing?

    hi,
I'm trying to creat a wireless connection to share internet with another laptop.
I followed the usual step like how i did it on Ubuntu
    Creat New Wireless Connection-->
    then I setup a connection
Mode: Ad-hoc  (No security password, cuz it's for testing)
ipv4 settings: Method: shared to other computers
when I tried to connect to this connection, it does work for only a second. the notify-osd says connection established, then changed into disconnected right after. and the connection does was detected on the other laptop (with vista), but only last about a second.
I have no idea what happed. but it works perfectly on Ubuntu, with the same operations.
also, if I create a connection on vista, it can connect to that connection.
what should I do to make it works as well as how it does in unbuntu?

  • How to share internet connection with KDE networkmanager applet

I mainly use wireless around my house and like to use one computer to share it's wireless to another when installing Arch, until I can get KDE and networkmanager installed so I can easily connect to the wireless. I've always been able to easily share internet connections with Ubuntu, but when I try it with Arch, with Gnome OR KDE (and their respective applets), It just doesn't work.
Is there some library or backend I need to install to make ICS work?
    Thanks!

If this helps at all, here is what I am currently trying: I open up the network settings KDE Control Module, select "Wired", select the device (eth0) and click edit, and under the "IPv4 Address" tab  selecting "Shared" from the "Method" drop-down.
Also, to make it clearer, I am trying to share wlan0(on device 1) through eth0 to eth0 on device 2. Also, device 2 is running the Arch setup and I am telling it to connect to eth0 via DHCP after I select the remote mirror to use. I have managed to do this before when device 1 ran Ubuntu.
I've searched Google, the forums, read the wiki pages for KDE and networkmanager, and can't seem to find a mention of internet connection sharing (pertaining to my usage case; the forums have some posts of people trying to use their computer to broadcast eth0, I'm trying to do the opposite) anywhere on them. In fact, I'll gladly write the section myself if I figure this problem out.
    Hope this extra information helps!

  • [FIXED] KDE NetworkManager Applet?

    I have installed kdeplasma-applets-networkmanagement
But I don't get any applet. I think I did something to disable it before, because it annoyed me, but now I want to use networkmanager I can't figure out how to enable it again...
For now I'll have to get by manually starting dhcpcd.
    Edit: Figured it out

nixpunk wrote:The network-manager-applet is the Gnome applet for NM.  If you are using the KDE Plasma applet, you do not need it installed (and running).  Uninstall it and it will no longer show up in the systray.
As I mentioned in my post uninstalling isn't an option because I need it when I want to use Gnome.
    I try b4data's approach instead.

  • NetworkManager Applet (GNOME) context menu

Whenever I click the NetworkManager icon, it shows a list of wireless networks as well as the wired networks for eth0 and eth1.  However, instead of showing "Wired Network (eth0/eth1)", it shows "Wired Network (RealTek ...)".  Is there any way to change this?

You can rename those by right clicking on the network icon and picking "edit network connection". Select the wired or wireless network connection you want to rename and click on the edit button. Now just give it the name you want.

  • Upgraded to 1.4 now applets dont work

I used to be able to work with applets in my web browser.
Now since i have upgraded to 1.4 it seems none of them work any more. Though I can compile and run java apps
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

    download msjavx86.exe
    DON' T !!!
If you are using swing in your applets then they wont work in IE 'coz IE uses the
m$ jvm. U need the sun's jvm if u are to run applets using swing properly on IE.
    Just go to
    http://java.sun.com/products/plugin/1.3/converter.html
I doubt they have a converter for 1.4 but you can see.
Convert your applet html code and your applets will run fine on IE.
If you are unable to run on Netscape then it must be specific instance of the problem.
In that case - what is the exact error you get ? Youcan see this using the "Java Console"
    option in the menubar.
    all the best.

  • Integration Service Upgrade of 2012R2 breaks Windows 2012 VM

    Hi,
we have setup a new server with Windows 2012 R2 and migrated our VM's over to it.
OS within the VM's are Windows 2008 Server, Windows 7 and Windows 2012.
Everything works fine. Integration Service Update was needed and I could install it on all VM's, except one, that also runs Exchange 2013 on a Windows 2012.
Once I install the Update of the Integration Service, the VM acts weird. It takes about 30 minutes until I could log in. (Probably network problem after the udpate). Once logged in, if I switch to desktop view, the task bar doesn't show items other than
the clock, clicking it results in the question, if I want to end a hanging process no matter if I say yes/no no luck. Server Manager opens (very slow), but it doesn't load data (wanted to check nic).
CMD with ipconfig doesn't show a network adapter, just the tunneling-peudo-interface.
Load of the server doesn't show high CPU or Memory consumption, nor high disk i/o. Using Alt/TAB it shows a window called "Immersive Background" (tried to translate to english).
    Starting the network manager via
    control.exe /name Microsoft.NetworkAndSharingCenter
doesn't open it either. But I can open like Resourcemonitor, Powershell and quite some other programs.
So something is failing here after the update.
Does Exchange and the new Integration Service break each other?
I rolled back VM to an older snapshot and tried the same thing again, same result. On our Replication host, I did a Testfailover, with no network connectivity, everything fine, again, until new Integration service are installed/updated, the host seems broken.
So I have no clue what's happening here or where to start to search. The main problem is, that backups have to be done offline and not online until new integration services are up and running.
Any guess what to try or what breaks the new integration services? Or is it really in conjunction with Exchange?
We didn't upgrade the VM to 2012R2, just the root node.
    Thanks
    Patrick

  • If I do this upgrade will I break stuff

Yes, I know - I could just make a backup first, but I'm trying to save myself the headache.
Doing pacman -Syu resulted in an unresolved dependancy issue between catalyst and linux 3.3. To get around it I edited the catalyst PKGBUILD to remove the "linux<3.3" dependancy and reinstalled. Then run pacman -Syu again, which gives me:
    dhcpcd-5.5.4-2 gnome-desktop-1:3.2.1-1 gnome-doc-utils-0.20.8-1
    kmod-7-1 linux-3.3-1 linux-headers-3.3-1 lirc-utils-1:0.9.0-13
    raul-0.8.0-2 virtualbox-archlinux-modules-4.1.10-2
    virtualbox-modules-4.1.10-2 vlc-2.0.1-1
A couple of things bother me now. Firstly, I usually use linux-ck, which hasn't been upgraded to 3.3 yet, and the virtualbox modules have 3.3 as a dependency. So, if I proceed with the upgrade am I going to:
    Kill VirtualBox?
    Kill Catalyst?
Not too sure where to go with this now.
    TIA

yes - I am using testing (I can usually fix it when it goes wrong). this was one of those rare occasions that I had the heads up stuff may break in advance, so figured I'd ask
I know my way around when stuff goes wrong (been a Linux user since Debian 3 back on my Amiga many years ago), so I'm not scared of breakages. I just find them an inconvenience.

  • QuickTime 7.6 upgrade for Tiger breaks system

I am also having problems on Tiger (10.4.11) after upgrading to QuickTime 7.6. Upon reboot after the install completed, I wind up with the login prompt on the console (not the login window, but a true unix login prompt). Logging in and dumping the last portion of /var/log/system.log reveals:
*Feb 4 14:28:23 localhost loginwindow[72]: Login Window Started Security Agent*

As you can see, I believe there are two errors. The first is the loginwindow error:
    Feb 4 14:28:24 localhost loginwindow[72]: AuthorizationRef doesn't have a username (<LoginAuthRefMgr: 0x438e00>).\n
Googling brought up a possible solution whose work around seems to be
    discussed here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1102633
However, the main problem seems to be (perhaps?) a carbon related issue. I am seeing any applications that make use of the Carbon framework seem to be failing.
As you can see from the system.log excerpt, ifcstart is crashing. The crash log contains:

I am also seeing SecurityAgent crash in a similar manner.
Without a UI (only a shell prompt) how do I back out the QuickTime upgrade?

I tried that and it did not work.  The paid functions are still grayed out.
    There are three possibilities here:
    1) The QT 7 Pro is not activated. In this case, the registration window will not display the QT logo with the word "Pro" superimposed on it, the phrase "QuickTime 7 Pro" will not be displayed below the "Registration Code:" entry, and the "Buy" button will not disappear. (I.e., I assume your version should look something like this if the code is accepted...)
    2) You don't have a movie clip loaded. Unless you load a movie, most of the QT 7 Pro features will be grayed out since their functions are often contextual and, therefore, dependent on the data loaded. Additionally, the file loaded must be QT compression and/or edit compatible. For instance, if you try to trim an MPEG-1 video, the associated controls/options are grayed out because QT recognizes that this compression format is not editable at the frame level.
    3) Your QT 7 Player application is corrupted/broken for some reason. In this case you would likely have to "extract" a copy of the player and replace the app in your Applications folder. However, this is a very rare chance of happening.
So, at this point you must determine which specific problem you have.
