Upgrade to new Macbook Pro

Hi,
I purchased my MBP (15" base model) on 4th of Feb this year. I asked the salesman in there is any new model of MBP in the pipeline and he said he isnt aware of any.
Now that Apple has released a new and better MBP just 3 weeks after my purchase, I feel very frustrated and depressed. Not only are the hardware specs better, it is also 200 SGD less than the previous one.
I called up the shop (authorized Apple reseller) and asked if there is a way to swap my MBP with the latest one and he said they dont have any of such policy.
Is there any way I can upgrade to the latest MBP? Buying another one is totally out of question as I just cant afford it

I agree, I would be pretty upset myself; excuse the Debbie Downers who choose to belittle a logical/rational response or fail to be constructive with their answers. While you did end up paying full price for older generation technology, (why you have the right to be upset) performance is still more than adequate for the normal user. Like other users have commented, if it serves it's purpose, be happy and enjoy. I was nearly tempted and ok with a C2 Duo Mac Book Air vs 2011 MBP with I5. Processors are maxed out for the most part and raw processing power is fairly overrated. However, I did like the build quality a tad more on the 13" MBP and I already had an SSD on hand for it to install that I did not want to go to waste considering the Air's a permanently fixated on their boards.
Next time I would recommend Accidental Coverage from Best Buy or to purchase their upgrade program if you enjoy trying to keep pace with the latest technology; I find it exciting and it takes people with those type of minds to keep new technological innovations coming are way.

    I'm very interested in your reply. I'm a photographer, too. Am soon going to change from my MacPro tower and 22-inch cinema display to a MacBook Pro. Not so much for airport/lap/in-the-field but because I will be moving seasonally between two houses in different parts of the country, and want a more mobile setup. I had assumed I should hold out for the 17-inch model to be upgraded like the 15-inch, mostly because of the screen size. Haven't had a chance yet to get to an Apple Store to compare.
    Do you find the 15-inch screen big enough, or do you do most of your hardcore photo editing on a different Mac? Did you find your former 17-inch unwieldy?

  • To upgrade to new MacBook Pro or not?

    We bought the previous version of the MacBook Pro literally just days before the new one was made available. We specifically asked at the store "Is there anything new coming out soon?" because we knew Apple is always putting out new stuff. They told us no, so we went ahead and purchased the MacBook. After we heard of the new one being available, we called support and the store both said "Sure, no problem, just bring it in and we can exchange it". When we got to the store, awaiting was a $300 restocking fee! After being blatantly lied to at the store and then being slapped with this fee, we just decided to walk out of the store.
    However, is the new MacBook worth this ridiculous fee?

    Apple Store employees aren't allowed to give out information about updates to the product line, and often don't even have that information until the day of the announcement -- the salesperson you dealt with may not have known. Some will say that they've heard rumors and advise you to Google for information. Some won't. If they do, they're brushing up against violation of the policy of their employer. I'm not now, nor have I ever been, and Apple employee, but I imagine it's something that, if the store manager's a hardliner, an employee could be fired for.
    The restocking fee is disclosed when you buy the computer -- it's on the receipt. It *****, but they do disclose it and it's not as though they try to keep it secret. What's more, Apple's 10% restocking fee is less than most other retailers. Best Buy charges 15% and some places won't accept returns at all.
    All that having been said, it does suck, especially when you thought you were making an effort to be a well-informed consumer. Given that you were given information that led you to believe you wouldn't be hit with the restocking fee, however, I'd ask to speak with the store manager and explain the situation -- complete with the erroneous information re: exchange. Also, Apple sent out invitations to the media 5 or 6 days before the announcement, and if you bought the older generation computer after that went out, bring that up too: If that's the case, you were directly lied to (as opposed to an employee simply not winking at the rules and moving on), and that's something the manager needs to be made aware of.
    Also, a lot of the stores are being pretty flexible with the return rules right now, and if you have no luck at the store where you made the original purchase and it's even remotely feasible to go to another one, call ahead, get the name of the person you speak to, and go there.
    (Example of the flexibility thing: My old MBP lost a fight against a cup of hot tea two weeks ago. It was declared more expensive to replace than to fix, and I carry a computer rider on my renter's insurance policy. I was aware of a possible update in the near future, and I didn't want to shell out any more than I had to before I knew my insurance claim would be approved. I bought a bottom-of-the-line MacBook with the full intention of returning it because I can't be without a computer. My new computer hasn't arrived yet, and the end of my return period was yesterday. I went in and asked if I could return it then immediately repurchase it so I could avoid having to wipe it, transfer files to another baseline MB, then wipe that one when my MBP finally shows up. They said that, given the new release, they were authorized to offer a bit of leeway on the return rules. The person I spoke to [a floor manager, I think] gave me his card and told me that if anyone had a question about it or he wasn't there to let them know I'd spoken to him and he'd given me the okay to go beyond the 14 days. I didn't ask about waiving the restocking fee, in part because insurance is covering it and in part because it never occurred to me that they would. I wasn't at all surprised by the return-extension, because in my experience every Apple Store I've been to has always been really good at customer service. My point is that if yours isn't, you should speak up.)
    If you don't have any luck getting them to waive or reduce the fee, the question of whether it's "worth" the $300 depends on your computer needs and your budget. If you can afford it and feel that the upgrades are worth $300, then it's worth it. On the other hand, the older model met your needs well enough that you were comfortable making the purchase. Unless your needs have changed, you still have a **** good machine that will hold up well and hold its value well. (Which is another option for you if you're determined to get the newer model: try to sell the machine you currently have for either what you paid for it or slightly less -- though not more than $300 less. You may get lucky.)

  • Please Advise: Upgrading a new MacBook Pro

    Hi all,
    I'm going to buy the new base model 15" MBP (comes with 4gb RAM and a 500gb standard hard drive, and I'll be getting a hi-res screen) and have the hardware upgraded through a local repair shop. I'm probably going to have them do a 16gb upgrade and swap out the hard drive with a 512gb SSD. The total price for this work (the cost of the machine from Apple plus the upgrades) comes out to about $2700. That seems hugely expensive to me, but I also don't have much context for how much this type of thing costs. Maybe it's reasonable?
    At the end of the day I really want a fast computer.  I'm told both the amount of RAM and the type of hard drive it has affects the speed. Even though right now I don't have huge storage needs I may soon find myself needing more space, which is why I'm leaning toward getting a bigger SSD so I don't have to worry about it later. It also seems like SSDs are the way laptops are going, and I figure putting one in will help with resale in a few years.
    But again, the price for all this seems steep. I would really love some input before making the leap, and if you have other suggestions, either in terms of upgrades or anything else, I would so appreciate hearing it. Thanks much.

    If your needs are not all that demanding, no heavy duty programs, why not buy a $400-$800 Windows 7 laptop?
    For 3D gaming a Windows 7 3D gaming tower is best anyway as you can replace the video card to keep up with the latest games.

    Why do you need a MacBook Pro that's $1900 more?
    It's only going to last about 1 year on OS X before you have to upgrade it and all the third party software.
    You'll wind up having to install Windows anyway because you can't ignore it or some software that's for Windows only.
    The machine is only going to last about 3 years on AppleCare and from there on it depends how well you took care of it during that first 3 years if it will last another year or two.
    Laptops don't last as long as desktop machines, neither can it be upgraded all that much.
    If you get three years out of the MacBook Pro, that's $900 a year for computer costs.
    My friend has a $600 Windows XP Dell desktop that has lasted a deacade and only now looking for a new machine. He likely paid about $100 a year for computer use, including having the OS reinstalled a few times.
    Microsoft supports their operating system for a decade, Apple only a few short years.
    For instance I bought a Early 2011 17" MBP, their top of the line machine. It came with 10.6.
    It's Late 2012 now and 10.6 is almost considered obsolete, Apple has released two operating systems since, I would have to buy all new versions of expensive third party software if I upgrade.
    I still have to run Windows 7 too.
    So are you ready to start chasing the technological dragon forever, they will never let you catch up, especially Apple.
    If you want something to last, buy a Windows 7 tower desktop and perhaps a small iPad or other cheap tablet for the on the go uses.
    A smart phone for the always around uses.
    Heck all three could be had for under $1500, no need for a $2700 MacBook Pro where Apple will figure out a way to slow it down or make you want ot upgrade after a few short years.
    Only the Early 2011 models and later get all the newer goodies now.

    I want to upgrade my MacBook Pro to the new retina machine running Mountain Lion, but I'm worried my software won't work on it. I'm running Studio 8 (Dreamweaver 8, Flash 8 and Fireworks 8), Photoshop CS2 and Illustrator CS. Does anybody know if they'll work okay?

  • Upgrading to new MacBook Pro but want to keep date added

    Hi Guys,
    My 2008 MBP is coming to the end of its life (that or I just want a new one!) and I want to a new MBP. However I'm a DJ a rely heavily on my itunes library, the biggest feature being the date added column and then secondly playlists. Could someone tell me how I can migrate my Itunes library to the new MacBook keeping the date added (and ideally all other data including playlists, tags, ratings) all in tact?

    Yes, everything will be the same. Just make sure you take the folder named iTunes and drop it into ~/Music. When you launch iTunes it will all be there.

    That is up to you; personally, I am continuing to use the older versions as the new ones have several functionality losses (and am ignoring the new versions for now until some of the functionalities are added back in). Having choices is a good thing. You don't have to reinstall - you can simply delete the old versions if you like.

    It sounds to me like there are two separate processes being intertwined above:
    1.  Setting up your daughter's MacBook with identifying info; e.g., Apple ID for the user account on that machine.
    2.  Transferring the iTunes library (a very different operation).
    Have you used Apple's Migration Assistant to move your daughter's information from her old machine to the MacBook?  That would have avoided this whole issue.
    If not, either start the process over and use Migration Assistant, or try to more carefully and precisely define exactly what you did to accomplish this transition.  You said, for example, "there was already an Apple ID assigned to this computer."  That statement almost certainly did not originate with iTunes.

    Not required.
    Some have upgraded and want desperately to reinstall SL.  Some are happy with the move.  Some are not completely happy but will live with it and adapt.

    Regardless, first thing you need to do is get a mac-formated drive and make a TimeMachine or CarbonCopyClone (download for free) backup.  The only common and provable issue with Lion upgrade is that those who do NOT make a backup regret not havng it when/if they reinstall SL.

I also have CS2 Indesign but can't find the install button to press for that either......Am I screwed? I can't afford new programmes.

    CS2 is the oldest version that can be upgraded to CS5. You may want to do that now before you lose the opportunity when CS6 comes out. You can upgrade and crossgrade to CS5 for Mac.
    Another thought...
    I run CS2 for Windows on Linux through Wine. It works fine. You could probably install Wine on Mac and do the same.
    The salespeople might have been referring to running your Windows software on Mac with a virtual machine... with the help of such apps as VMWare Fusion or Parallels. These let you run Windows on top of Mac OS X without rebooting into a Windows partition. See the marketing line: "It Runs Windows Too".

    I think I just got it.  I had the actual Logic Pro.app in a folder called Logic Pro inside the applications folder.  When I moved the actual app out of the folder and into applications it worked.  I am in the process of updating now.  However it seems a little strange because that's how it installed from the discs - into a folder named Logic Pro within the applications folder.  I would never have figured that out on my own.  So thanks for those who posted solutions to other users similar requests.

    If you migrated all the info from time machine to your new MBP. The TM will usually ask to connect to the old backups.. sorry I am not sure is this what you want to do.. Personally I think you start a fresh backup.
    BTW Time Capsule does not do anything.. it is a dumb hard disk in a box.. it is TM that does everything.
