Upgrade to OS 10.4 caused slow dial modem connections

Installed OS 10.4 and my dial modem speed dropped. Before the upgrade, same computer, modem & phone lines never went below 48K. After the upgrade, it never goes above 36K. Nothing else changed. This is a big drop in speed for someone who can not get cable or DSL service. Seems to be a recurring theme among posts. Have tried selecting a few different internal modems in the Network Preferences window with no improvement.

Hello Ian:
First, I would run repair disk from your software install DVD. Then I would run repair permissions from your internal HD.
After that (if nothing improves), I think I would reapply the OS X 10.4.10 update (use the combo - this will not hurt anything).

  • Slow dial-up connect speeds

I need help! I've had my mini for 9 months. It's used primarily for internet/e-mail and occasionally some iphoto and itunes fun. I live really rural so dial-up internet access is my only connection option (No DSL/cable available). I have used the same ISP since my PC days (before the mini). The mini used to connect around 36K, but modem connection speeds have degraded overtime to 14K or less (have seen 9600!). I regularly run the maintenance scripts and occasionally repair permissions...I use YASU. Also reset the PMU. My mini went to Apple repair once for slow connect speeds but I was told it is my ISP.
Yesterday, I pulled the old Windows PC out and powered it up and using the same phone/modem cable from the mini was able to consistently connect to my ISP at 42-44K!! Wow! High speed!! Replugged the same modem cable into the mini and was able to connect at a blazing speed of 14.4K! There obviously is something wrong with my mini or its modem. Any suggestions or is it time to retire the mini and go back to the big, noisy, awkward Windows PC?...after all web surfing and e-mail is my primary computer usage.

I just bought a new 12" Powerbook and it will not connect to my local dial up ISP any faster than 28k. I've had the same ISP for over ten years. I've had the same phone line in my same apartment for over ten years. The G3 iBook I just sold connected at 56k almost every time. The G4 iMac I have at home connects at 56k almost every time. The Performa 6400 I used to have connected at 56k almost every time. The G4 Sawtooth I have in my music studio a couple of blocks away using a different phone line connects at 56k almost every time. Same ISP for over ten years, two different phone lines that work fine with four other Macs, the only Mac I've had that won't connect at 56k is my brand new Powerbook. It won't connect at 56k using OS 10.3.9 or 10.4 or 10.4.4. I tested the connection with CNET's online modem bandwidth test page and the Powerbook modem was connecting at about 26k.
so I took my PowerBook to the Apple store in San Francisco, they sent it to be repaired and when it came back said they replaced the modem, but it still won't connect at 56k when all my other Macs will.
so I took my PowerBook back to the Apple store in San Francisco, and they connected it to a phone line and got a 31k connection and told me, Well the modem connects, so as far as we're concerned it works, and the 56k is only the maximum theoretical connection speed and Apple does not guarantee you will actually get that modem baud rate, so we are not going to do anything else about it. I told them that there is nothing theoretical about all my other Macs connecting to the same ISP at higher speeds than the PowerBook and that Apple should be able to test the PowerBook to determine if their own tech guys can get a 56k connection with my PowerBook. The Apple store guy called his manager, who refused to do any more work on the computer.

  • Upgrading to 10.9.4 causes slower startup time & system gets hot and causes fan to run during startup for no reason! Never did this before.

Macbook pro 7,1, osx 10.9.4.. just upgraded from 10.9.3. 10.9.2 was installed fresh in January.
Before that I had snow leopard. Never before has the fan turned on during startup in the 3.5 years I've owned this machine. That means the laptop gets hot? Why would it get hot at startup? And it takes 5-10 seconds longer to boot now too.

Same problem here. I just upgraded from 10.9.3 to 10.9.4 and the fan hasn't stopped since. Before seeing this post I was starting to get VERY worried. Now I'm thinkin..... Apple - ya gotta fix something here!!

  • Trying to download a song, but nothing seems to be happening (slow dial-up)

I've been trying to download a song for at least half an hour on an ultra-slow dial-up connection (26.4 kbps), which is all that is available where I live, and there doesn't seem to be even one iota of progress so far. I don't know if anything is actually happening or if I should just abort. If I abort, my card will be charged for a song I won't have - which isn't fair. If I don't abort, my computer could be tied up the entire day (and I still may not have anything to show for it at the end of the day). Is there anything I can do?

Thank you for that information - that is good to know. Unfortunately it's not a very practical solution for me. That's no reflection on you or your advice - I just don't know anyone who has both a cable connection and iTunes on their computer well enough to even feel comfortable in making such a request - but assuming I could find someone who would be willing to let me use their computer, I'd still have to spend at least 45 minutes driving to their home (no one in my town has cable - it just isn't available here).
There still hasn't been any progress, so maybe I will abort this attempt and just try again. I've downloaded files from other sites with this connection, so I don't know why there hasn't at least been some progress on this attempt. Does anyone know if it is even possible to download anything from this particular site with a 26.4 kbps dial-up connection?

  • After Upgrade to Yosemite, all apps are slow.

I upgraded to Yosemite  and all applications are slow.  ( as e.g.. starting to type in this box give me beachball for 2 seconds initially) A big difference in speed from Mavericks to Yosemite. Opening system preferences takes 3 seconds to load, and clicking on Users & Groups takes 25 seconds to open.
    I do not have fire vault enabled.  I did a safe boot and some apps did appear to open faster. Also did a repair disk and rebooted.  No change. When Safari is open it takes 5 seconds to open a new window.   I ran EtreCheck and the report is as follows;
Thanks for any help;( After pasting the EtreCheck text file, I clicked on this box to add the Thanks... , it took 2-3 seconds for the beach ball to stop spinning.)

You could do that, but when setting up your new iMac it is a much better idea to transfer only your existing User Accounts. In other words when Setup Assistant appears, de-select "Applications", "Computer and Network Settings" and "Other files and folders". That way you will eliminate the possibility of reinstalling potentially incompatible software from your existing Mac or its TM backup. It's best to create new printer queues and preferences anyway.
Your venerable HP 1012 will probably work without any difficulty but if you need its driver download it here. If it gives you trouble try OS X's generic PostScript driver.
After configuring your user account, install original versions of your essential software from their original sources. In other words if you installed them via download from the developer's website, download them again. You might need license keys so gather them. Obviously the Mac App Store makes things easy since anything you obtain from there is already linked to your Apple ID and is easily reinstalled by going to your Purchases page.
Don't reinstall things like AppCleaner, CleanMyMac, Western Digital "Smartware" or any of that junk. You don't need it. MacFUSE is outdated. Research Prolific Technology for potential updates for their serial controller. The one you have may work, or not, but you should re-download its driver.
Consider abandoning Microsoft altogether and migrating to better solutions such as Pages, Numbers, and Keynote. They are all free with a purchase of a new Mac and are far more integrated with OS X than anything Microsoft will ever be able to accomplish.
The Burr-Brown USB device is unknown to me, so research TI's website for support if you need it.
If your essential software was distributed on optical media, you can use OS X's "DVD or CD sharing" feature to remotely mount the older iMac's optical drive so that you can install its software. It will work as though that drive were physically installed on your new Mac. Having said that, anything that was distributed on optical media is highly likely to have been outdated a long time ago.
If your essential software is old, orphaned, no longer supported, or is no longer available, meaning you have the only viable copy, the only option is to transfer it from the TM backup or older Mac. In that case be very cognizant of the likelihood for incompatibility, and have a plan for uninstalling it should it cause adverse effects. Creating a new TM backup is the way to do that. A new external HD dedicated to the new Mac is a cheap investment. When you are certain you no longer require the older Mac's TM backup, you can erase it and use it as an additional, redundant TM backup or "clone" repository – whichever you decide is best for your backup needs.

Since upgrading to Mavericks, Mail is extremely slow to load the preview pane or show email when mailbox is double-clicked. Is this a known issue? Or is there a solution to this issue?

    Hi AngieLynch,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you're seeing some unexpected behavior in Mail.
Before troubleshooting on your computer, I'd strongly recommend backing up your data to an external hard drive with Time Machine, if you haven't already. This article can help with setting up Time Machine:
Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427
Next, try creating a new user account on your computer. You can add your email account to Mail in the new user account. If Mail is more responsive in the new user account, then Mavericks is working fine and the behavior is caused by conflicts in your own Mail or user account.
These articles walk you through creating a new user and setting up Mail:
OS X Mountain Lion: Create a new user account (applies to Mavericks, too.)

  • Suspect stateful packet issue causing slowness?

    I have a NW6.0SP3/BM37SP3-FP4E with the ipflt32(5.31.09) backrev to
BM37SP3 per Craig's site. We just applied the updates. Prior to the
upgrade, we increased the load on the server and have added more
stateful packet filters and then we started seeing slowness and dropped
connections after 2-3 days of use. Now the update is in and we are still
seeing slowness. Once we stop and restart the filters all is good for
a few days, then slows down again. This is a production server and is
causing us much pain. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks Scott

If you didn't do a complete reinstall from the original media, then you need to do it. Adobe software doesn't do migration well.

  • Bug report: Energy Manager causes slow performance...

    Very slow Windows Startup..
Energy Manager's plans and the problem occured using any plan as I remember, and it wasn't an issue with the maximum processor state. I had heavy disk usage, especially access to the Page File, which is what the person in the second link I posted also described. CPU usage was low. The disk usage was seemingly not related to Energy Manager (Chrome was usually the worst), but removing Energy Manager completely resolved the problem. If you would find it helpful. I'm quite confident that even with Maximum Processor state at %100, CPU usage was low when it was slow, and that disk access was the culprit.
previously have use 1.0.0.31 or 32 not sure.
    Windows 8.1
Im using Lenovo Energy Management Driver
    1.0.0.28
    4.6.2014

I actually have the same problem.  Sorry to work on a old thread, but...
I've got my Lenovo B50-70 less than 1 month ago, and had switched it to SSD and had set everything up and is working perfectly.  However there are a bunch of lenovo programs that came pre-installed.  This computer is used mainly for work and I really don't like programs that suddenly pop-up and ask you to do stuff, as it is quite distracting, and with Lenovo Energy Manager being one of them so I removed it.  (I did do some research before I remove...)
Everything was fine, until when I try to switch on my wifi (I usually have it off, as I use LAN most of the time)...  For the B50-70 there is a airplane button on F7, which allow the user to switch wifi and bluetooth on/off.  That button was unresponsive...  After some digging it is actually related to the power energy manager being removed.  So I've downloaded the latest version from Lenovo and it was working again...
However though, whenever I start my computer it is taking so long to start...  And I tried uninstalling the power energy manager and it solved the problem...  And I am stuck with either having no wifi on/off ability or a really slow boot, which loses the whole purpose of the SSD.  After you enter your username and password it originally takes around 5~10 seconds to login, now it takes over 1 minute.
I have found this other link, which says Lenovo Power Manager having the same problem.
    https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkVantage-Technologies/Bug-report-Power-Manager-causes-slow-performa...
There is a solution, which you can change the registry to switch a function off.  I've tried it and it didn't work, which is not surprising as it's a different program..  But I am hoping that Lenovo can provide a similar solution for Lenovo Energy Manager...

  • HT5730 After I installed 10.8.48.4 Internet browsing slowed down to the pace of a dial-up connection.  How can I get back to normal operating speed?

After I installed 10.8.4, my Internet browsing slowed down to the pace of a dial-up connection -- unless it froze up completely.  How do I get my system back to a normal operating mode?  Can I dump 10.8.4 and go back to the one that at least worked?

Please answer as many of the following questions as you can. You may already have answered some of them.
    1. Have you restarted your router and broadband modem since you first noticed the problem? If the answer is no, do that now and see whether there's any change.
    2. Are any other web browsers installed, and are they also slow?
    3. What about other Internet applications, such as iTunes and the App Store?
    4. Are there any other devices on the same network that can browse the Web, and are they also slow?
    5. If you can test Safari on another network, is it slow there too?
    6. If you connect to your router with Wi-Fi and you can also connect with Ethernet, do that and turn off Wi-Fi. Any difference?

  • Dial-up connection upgrade

Is there a way to upgrade itunes + QT via a disk (cd)? The dial up connection is always dropped.

    One thing that might help.
if you have a friend or know someone that has a high speed connection, try having them download the itunes and save to the desktop.
Once it is saved to the desktop, you can burn this file to a cd or put in on a flash memory drive. Also, if you have an ipod that you can enable disk mode on, you can move the file that way.
Then on your computer, move the file to the desk top.
    Then double click to install.
    Hope this helps.

I can take my wifes PC Computer, plug it into the same wall jack that the Mac was in and get a 50.6K connection with a average through put of 46K. My old PC always connected and still connects at 50.6K on the same wall jack. I am very remote and will never have anything but dial up, 28.8K is not useable.
Reading in some of the OLD posts, it seems like many people with Tiger and the version before it lost connect speed. People wiht older OS have normal speed.
Is there a fix ? I talked with Apple Tech Support and they deny there is a problem.
What about a external USB Modem ? It appears that Zoom makes the only external USB that will run with Mac.
Thanks for any help possible. I am running OS 10.4.7

Thanks for the link to the other discussion. I too have the problem when connecting to the web that It streams the "connecting" message but does not dial or make any noise and is not connected to the phone line. It just continues to stream the "connecting" message. If I select "disconnect" then it streams the "disconnecting" message and is completely hung -the computer is not hung, just the modem. I can sometimes get out of this by disconnecting the modem and plugging it back in. That worked for a while but more and more it just crashes and requires a restart. Then after a restart I can get a 28.8K The streaming/slow conect is random in pattern.
This is serious. I too read the user reports on the Apple Store regarding the USB Modem. No Sale on that Modem. Now, I doubt the Zoom will help either.
Apple needs to realize and respond to this problem, its on going. As I mentioned before, Not everyone in the US has Broadband.
I am test driving this Power Mac G4 to see the differences between it and PC/Windows for my business. It will be a capital expense to buy all new Macs or PC's. I am very impressed with Mac, In fact wish I got a Mac a long time ago. Howwever, If Apple Cant, Wont or does not know how to give a good modem dial up connection, I will not be able to replace my ageing PC's with Macs. My business requires a lot of Internet use.
Please take note Apple, this is a business application, your falling short !!!

    Hi ..
    Better to troubleshoot Yosemite.
Not enough free storage space can slow your Mac down.
Click your Apple menu icon top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage. Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space.   OS X Tips Where did my Disk Space go?
As for Safari, might be a cookies, cache, extensions, or plug-ins issue.
From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Privacy tab.
    Click:   Remove All Website Data
    Then delete the cache.
Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that didn't help, from the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall.
If it's not an extensions issue, try troubleshooting third party plug-ins.
Back to Safari > Preferences. This time select the Security tab. Deselect:  Allow plug-ins. Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that made a difference, instructions for troubleshooting plugins here.
