Based on the aforementioned advisory, those of you using Photoshop Elements 8, or earlier, should probably upgrade to v10 (or at least 9). Although it has been stated that, "Adobe is not aware of any attacks exploiting these vulnerabilities against Adobe Photoshop Elements to date", it seems silly to run software that contains one or more known critical vulnerabilities and Adobe is NOT going to fix the issue since PSE 8 and earlier versions are no longer supported. Nice of Adobe not to bother fixing a vulnerability in one of their software products when the version involved is only ~2 years old (PSE 8) but the mentality appears to be one designed to virtually force users to pay for upgrades every year or two. FWIW.....

I admit that it is rather strange that they just issued that advisory when they probably knew about it when pse 8 was stiil being sold.
Since pse 8 shares much of the code of cs4, look at the date on this advisory for cs4 and yes adobe doesn't have a good track
record about updating photoshop elements and that is kinda bothersome.

I believe you just need to purchase the upgrade. I don't think there is any additional discount with upgrade pricing, meaning you don't also get a student version discount with an already discounted upgrade purchase. As far as versions go, there is no difference between a regular and a student version... the difference is in the licensing.

I uploaded the upgrade to Photoshop Elements 12 today. I got a "dispatching error" for Photoshop Elements, but was able to download Premier elements! I did not order Premier Elements, so I'm confused (unless this was a package that I did not know about)

Sometimes when problems pop up for no apparent reason it could be that the preferences files had become corrupted. Here are two ways to reset the preferences.
1. The reset process might be built into your PSE version, as shown in this video:

2. If your version does not have the reset option, press and hold Alt-Ctrl-Shift (Option-Command-Shift on Mac) immediately while starting PSE. The timing is critical; you may have to try this several times. A dialog box will pop asking if you want to delete the settings file? Click YES.

You can upgrade to PSE 7.0 for Vista and XP, however if you are a MAC user you will have to opt for PSE 6.0 as PSE 7.0 is not in market for MAC.

Adobe changed the catalog software from PSE6 onwards to the SQLite database – as used in Lightroom.
Earlier versions of PSE including PSE5 used a Microsoft Access database, stored in a file called [Catalog Name].psa.
If you have already embedded keywords and captions by writing file info into the images they should be readable even if catalog conversion fails. Lightroom does have the ability to import a PSE catalog but in view of the age of PSE5 I would recommend downloading the 30 day free trial of LR5.6 and then you can judge the level of success of catalog conversion.

Mess caused by upgrading to Photoshop Elements 13

I have just upgraded from Photoshop Elements 12 to Photoshop Elements 13 via download. I am not impressed. First I had to or was directed to use a download manager of Japanese name! With 50Mb cable broadband I don't need this, but the alternative seemed to have 2 files. So I went with the provided download manager. But this has put a folder on the Desktop - bit messy in my opinion. Fortunately after download it is not needed to run 13. (But why didn't the installation delete or make it clearer that you could put it else where??). I now have Photoshop Elements 13 installed and it runs fine. BUT I also have Photoshop Elements 12 which also runs. There is not point in having 2 versions on this PC. But when I look in the Control Panel un-install route I can only see Elements 13. I can't find or see Photoshop Elements 12 listed, but this older version is present and I can find all its folders on the C directory program files area!! So how can I easily and cleanly remove Photoshop Elements 13?

I was a regular home user of Photoshop Elements 12(PSE12) having purchased it by upgrade on
7 Oct 2013 (S/No: 1057-1302-7331-8029-4210-6039). Then when I was powering up this application it said that Photoshop Elements 13 (PSE13) was available for upgrade on special offer by download. So I purchased PSE13 on 13 Oct, 2014 (S/No: 1057-1314-3452-2773-6251-9919)
I realise that most software suppliers will not support old versions so on important packages such as PSE I always upgrade so that I am on the latest version. (Also means I am a faithful customer of Adobe). Most software companies will support the last issued version even though they have just upgraded. They will eventually pull the plug but not for a short period following an upgrade/re-issue of software! (But Adobe doesn’t appear to follow this convention from my Help Web CHAT calls as you will see).
When I installed PSE13, I finished up with both PSE12 & PSE13 on my PC, both fully working. However I couldn’t see the point in having both on my PC. After if you only support PSE13 better to be on that. If there are any bugs in the new software, I will trust that a company of Adobe reputation will issue fixes in due course.
So I went to un-install PSE12 via the correct Windows Control Panel and un-install provided to un-install software cleanly. But only PSE13 appeared but no PSE12, even though it is a fully running application. So I used your Adobe Web Chat connection as I do have an Adobe account. So I spent a whole afternoon (3.5 hours on chat itself) to try and solve this problem. The message I get from Adobe is that you do not support PSE12 but only PSE13 which you have only just issued. Rather than provide a professional support on a just upgraded version you pass the responsibility to the Adobe Forum to try and help me solve the problem. It is true that most Forums are brilliant with many fine engineers. But I feel a company like Adobe should provide good technical support and I don’t feel that is what I am receiving. Your graphic products in comparison to other similar products are expensive. Although I recognise that they are high quality and functionality. But this whole experience has left me somewhat disillusioned with Adobe. I feel that I will never be able to delete PSE12 even though I am ex IT engineer and quite capable of administrating a PC. I look forward to a reply from Adobe that will restore my confidence not just in your products but in the service you provide.

Can I upgrade my Photoshop Elements 4 to Elements 12 on Windows and how do I go about that? I currently have Windows XP on my desktop computer. Also, would that automatically migrate intact my Collections? If not how would I go about ensuring it does? I will soon be moving over to an IMac.

As far as I know, Adobe is no longer selling version 12, version 13 is the latest version they have for sale.

Hi Johnson,
the maximum request size is 10000 characters. To translate larger documents you'll need to break them into smaller chunks. When using the HTML mode, make sure you send a complete element, for instance the whole <p> element up to and including the </p>.
Also make sure not to break requests in the middle of a sentence. Translator needs whole sentences to translate. You can use the BreakSentences method to find sentence boundaries. Breaksentences is also subject to the 10000 character request size limit.

Best bet is to look for the full version either online from someplace like amazon or at a local big box store. It's almost always much cheaper than the upgrade version.
