Upgrade to Server 10.8 for Mac Mini Server running Server 10.7.5?
Hi—I am seeing references to OS X Server 10.8 yet my Mac Mini Server (mid-2011, machine identifier "Macmini5,3") is holding firm with OS X Server version 10.7.5.
There are no pending updates for this machine either through OS X (software updates) or through the App Store.
Will this machine eventually go to 10.8 through routine updates, or is this something I have to buy?
Searching the App Store for "OS X Server" returns the Server utilities. One of the main headings under it is "What's new in Version 2.2.1".
Should I sit tight, or jump into the forced upgrade fray?
Thanks for any thoughts! —michael
Thanks John.
Are you saying that to move to the next "level" (10.8.n) that indeed the "Server.app" is what I need to do?
Seems awfully dicey. Why isn't Apple pushing me something called "OS X Server 10.8 Upgrade"?
I have to first "buy and upgrade to Mountain Lion i.e. 10.8"?
"The upgrade from 10.7.5 to 10.8 is not free".
Money is not an object here. Again, the PATH TO UPGRADE isn't being provided through any internal systems (a.k.a. Finder/../Software Update).
This is a huge mis-step for Apple.
Sure "Mavericks" is soon due. And I'll bet that the path to (seamlessly) move from 10.7.5 is even more obscure.

Screen Needed for mac mini as file server?
I have two pb I want to network together through a mac mini. Do I need a display for the mac mini to run as a "file server"? I'm new at networking, and I want a place where I can share files with other co-workers w/out using more space on either of our computers. Any help is welcome. Thank you.
The first response you received in this thread was spot on...I just want to add another option to consider.
You can find very inexpensive, network-capable external enclosures on the web (check out dealnews.com). Just toss in a good-sized hard drive (the last 320GB I bought from newegg.com was $115)...hook up one of those enclosures...and boom, you have NAS (Network Attached Storage). No computer to update or support...just simple, effective, and fast network file storage. -
Lion and lion server add on for Mac Mini Server
I bought the Lion OS and Lion Server add on for my Mac Mini Server which runs Snow Leopard Server. When trying to install the Lion,
it requests the Add on to be available, however the add on requests the Lion to be already installed before it can be downlaoded through
App store. I made my purchases over the phone as neither was available in stores anymore. Egg and chiken dilema.
I do not have a physical DVD with the Snow Leopard (Client) to follow some of the instructions I have read in the communities. Any
workaround? For the Mini you must have Lion client installed to purchase the Server. You can download Lion from the Mini while it's running Snow Leopard. Once Lion is installed you should then be able to purchase the Server.
Unlike past OS X Server releases the bulk of the software is within the Lion client. The Server is more or less a type of add-on to provide all the Server utilities and support. It's a relatively small download compared to the client. -
I want to use a mac mini as a server supporting storage. I have other devices such as an iMac and iPad that will access information from the server. I do not want to purchase a monitor and keyboard as the unit will sit in a cupboard out of sight. Can I pair my macair to it for when I need to perform updates and maintenance ?
I have a 2010 Mac Mini running Yosemite and Server which I use
as a headless home server.
I have is set up to allow screen sharing and can connect to it and
control it with my iMac, Macbook Pro, iPhone, and a 2011 Mini Server
that I use as an HTPC.
You can check this out for all the Yosemite Server capabilities:
https://help.apple.com/advancedserveradmin/mac/4.0/
I have iTunes Home Sharing set up on it and have my entire iTunes
library on it. I can then use any of my Macs to play Movies or Songs
from it and only keep locally a select subset of that on my individual
devices.
Rather than and update server, I utilize Server's Caching Service. The caching
server will duplicate any update download (system or MacApp Store purchases)
any time a device that is connected to my network down loads one. The update will
then be stored locally and all other devices will download the update from it which
can be faster than from Apple directly. This has the advantage of only having to download
once with limited bandwidth internet connections. There is also an Update Server service
available, but it is some what more involved in setting up. However, it will download
and store all available updates.
There is another thing as well if you do not care for syncing things like Contacts, Calendar, etc.
to iCloud, you can set Server up to sync these items across devices locally. -
If I install the Mail server on a Mac Mini as a server, can my users utilize Outlook as their mail client and how will it be different for them?
Your users can utilize Outlook no matter where your email is hosted at.
how will it be different for them

I want to install Snow Leopard Server on our MacPro(2.66) using Mac Mini Snow Leopard Server disks? I kept getting an error for backwards compatibility. Is this possible or do I need topurchase another copy of Snow Leopard Server?
The OS disks that are shipped with a particular product
are set up so that tey will only install on that product.
It will install on any Mini of that exact vintage, but that
is all.
This is to prevent people from doing exactly what you
are trying to do. The license for OSX shipped with any
is only valid for that product. Also, Snow Leopard,
including Server, is only permitted to be run on one
computer at a time. Bottom line, unlike Lion, legally
you cannot install the same copy on multiple
computers unless some "family pack" or site license
is purchased.
Yes, you need to purchase another copy.
The copy of Snow Leopard license is here:

I am wondering if it is possible to install and run Windows Server 2008 on a Mac Mini Server as a VM as my main application uses Windows VisualBasic and Fox Pro and requires a Static IP to connect to it, My other offices connects to Windows Server via RDP.
Basically I am researching a Server for the same purpose and since Mac Mini and OsX both are robust in nature it can fit the bill if every thing work fine.

Mac Mini 10.74 Server - Now Reboots Randomly
I have been running a Mac Mini OS X Server for last 3 months without a single error. I have 2 of them.
Yesterday, I upgraded to 10.7.4 (from 10.7.3) and today, one of my servers has crashed twice. Both times, it has rebooted (no Monitor attached to Mac Mini). It is out of service for 10 mins or so. This concerns me, as it never rebooted before 10.7.4. Also, other Mac Mini OS X Server doesn't have an issue.
Anyone else seeing this?
I usuallly wait a few weeks before installing software updates on servers - but I decided to yesterday (Sunday), becuase I had some time, stupid me.Your Computer was restaeted because of a problem:

Server 10a403 on 2010 Mac Mini
Is it possible to install 10.6 Server 10a403 on a 2010 Mac Mini (not the server version of the Mini). Booted from the DVD in verbose mode and the boot sequence stops at "AirPort: Link Down..." so my guess is outdated drivers. Is there any way around this or do I have to upgrade to Lion Server? Would prefer 10.6 Server as the box is mainly used as a media centre (we stream all TV instead of paying for cable), use as a Time Machine backup hub and my 3 yr old son likes to use Front Row
I am a member of Apple Developer Connection and a search reveals 10a403 seems to be the only full DVD installer.
Any help appreciated!
Cheers, PaulThis is the more difficult configuration for sharing to get to work.

any ideas? To reset the SMC means to reset the power management settings for your Mac. To do this, follow these simple steps.
1) Shutdown your Mac by going to the Apple Logo in the upper left hand corner of the screen and selecting "Shut Down" from the drop down menu.
2) Turn your machine back on while continuing to hold down the power button.
3) After the initial boot chime, your power indicator light should flash three times.
4) Your screen will remain black and you will hear the boot chime again. At this point, you may release the power button and allow your Mac to boot up normally.
All the best with getting your Mac Mini to run smoothly. -
Mac Mini to run Final Cut Server
Hi
I'm buying up Mac Mini's to create a render farm for Compressor projects that I export from Final Cut Pro.
Recently I've started thinking about whether purchasing Final Cut Server might help improve various workflows, where a Mini would host the Final Cut Server and various other Mac Mini's and my Macbook pro would act as Clients and additional processor power for Compressor based activities.
Will an 2ghz Intel Core Duo Mac Mini with 4gig of RAM be up to the business of hosting? And does the Mini have an integrated Intel graphics processors which apparently is not supported?
All advice gratefully receivedThe current Mac mini ships with Nvidia 9400m graphics and meets the minimum system requirements for Final Cut Server 1.5.
http://www.apple.com/finalcutserver/specs/
It has limited expandability so if you find yourself needing more storage or processing power to handle larger workloads, I would be prepared to upgrade it to a Mac Pro or an Xserve.

We're setting up our Mac Mini Snow Leopard Server, and in the process transferred files that had been stored and accessed from our Blackarmor NAS server over to the Mac. These files were all created on PC's and are Office Excel files, WordPerfect files or PDF's. When you look at the files on the Mac from the Mac and bring up Get Info for the affected file, it says that the file has Custom Access. The files that work properly don't have that configuration. I can access and open the files on some computers, but some users can't open the files from their computer even though they can see it. We're all using PC's and they get the Error: Access Denied-Contact your administrator--or something similar. I've seen on the web similar issues and it may have something to do with ACL permissions. I don't know enough about Mac OS to understand this, but what is baffling is that they can be opened from some PC's but not others, and all of the Users have the same accessibility to the files. Thanks for a solution!!
Oh, on the losing Internet, try this...
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
10.7 & 10.8…
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
For 10.5/10.6, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...

Click OK.

HELP!
So I have had a Time Machine wifi loop at the house for approx. 6 years. I run two Macbooks, 2 iPhones, 2 iTouch and a Samsung Smart Blueray on the loop.
I just bought a Mac Mini with Lion Server. When setting it up I'm not sure what or how I managed to do, but I now have 2 wifi loops, one doesn't lock and niether will support the Samsung BlueRay. Also, each time I want to go online with one of the other Mac devices i have to relog into the wifi loop.
Can someone please walk me through the fix. The mac Mini is plugged straight into the Time Machine to recevie its internet connection.
Thanks!
JohnYou often see this limit of 10 clients in wireless hotspots but I have yet to see it in an adsl modem.. most strange way to pay for a service that is really irrelevant how many clients you use.
Have a go .. I recently setup a TC to help a guy run his Roku.. and this setup worked well.. I have no idea if it can work in your case.
Lets say the IP you get is 192.168.2.1-10 .. doesn't matter what it really is. And the adsl modem is 192.168.2.254
(Assuming they are private addresses.. if they are public IP you can just use the DHCP and NAT. )
But go to the airport utility.. I think you need to run v5 at least to change DNS.. but you can do the same thing in v6 using static but no dns changes.
Now you set the IP of the TC manually.. This address might need to be in the dhcp range of the modem to work. You can set the DNS to same IP as the router address.. ie home address of the modem. Or you can use another DNS.. whatever you like.
Then set DHCP for clients that will join.. this can then expand the scope of addresses..
It worked without a NAT error.. although I am not sure exactly how.. on paper it should not be able to work but did.. have a go.. otherwise there is perhaps another way.. but it is complicated.
Give us an example from a computer plugged into the modem of what IP .. subnet mask .. Gateway and DNS you get. Then I can fine tune the values for it. -
Can I install windows home server 2011 on a mac mini?
Hey guys and girls...
Can I install windows home server 2011 on a mac mini? If so how?WHS is 64-bit. Genius are really not versed in Boot Camp or Windows, let alone anything not on the "approved" list of Windows versions.
Most of the problems are with burning ISO, or the SuperDrive. It should have seen the NTFS partition. Disk Utility is known to be trouble, burning it on your Mac Mine but iwth Windows 7....?
Seeing you have Windows 7, format the partition to NTFS 160GB you want and then exit and boot WHS installer.
Or run the install from Windows 7.
In past, WHS supported TimeMachine, streaming video, supported iTunes (that was broken/disabled it seems by Apple with 10.0), as well as even SuperDuper backups.
Main idea is to have some network attached drives.

I have both a ISO and Burned it to a dvd useing windows 7 built in ISO burning software, Its a 64 bit copy (got from microsoft download website from my dads microsoft account).
It is enouth for the OS but it runs slowish on the mac mini (latest core 2 duo 2.4ghz model) The Idea was to have it backup my pc and laptop to a usb drive and act as a media centre pc (connected to av receaver and tv and on a gigabit network with a 2TB nas)
Since it looks like this may not work, whats the best way to make it into a media centure? mac osx? windows 7? plex? whats best and good?
I'd avoid USB like the plague. Why not use your PC instead? If I was going to use a Mini for WHS, I'd just use the Mini solely for Windows and not have OS X (you can boot OS X off an external drive anyway). -
Mac OSX 10.4 Server on a MacMini + Mac Mini Network render farm
Hi Guys,
I am working at a small vfx post house in Bangkok. We are looking to install some sort of server and network renderfarm.
There was talk of going Windoze based when I first arrived, so I am doing my best to steer them to Mac & OSX. (Most of the current workstations are MacPros)
For a budget solution I said it may be possible to run a OSX Server on a new Mac Mini, and also create a 5-10 machine Mac Mini renderfarm (for rendering 3d scenes from Maya, encoding with Compressor, and 2d scripts from Shake).
So my questions are:
1. WIll OSX Server work on a mac Mini?
2. Will the Mac Mini be able to handle it? It won't be a render box itself, more a machine to keep control of permissions on our central storage (stop people moving and deleting files and saving things in the incorrect place), and control the QMaster Adminstration.
3. Has anyone had any experience creating a renderfarm from a stack on Mac Minis?
4. If no one has any idea can they recommend a person/forum to ask?
Thankyou very much!
Adam TealeI found answer to my first question - does OSX server work on a Mac Mini - yes

Why isn't Premiere in the CC Desktop app?
I purchased Premiere Pro CC, but it doesn't appear in the CC desktop app to download. The activation worked because the CC website shows "Download" for Premiere Pro instead of "Try Now". Why isn't Premiere in the CC Desktop app? Super frustrating.
