Upgrade to  Snow Leopard before or after install new Office 2011 for Business?

I'm about to upgrade from Leopard to snow leopard. I also am going to upgrade to Microsoft Office 2011 for Business and then download the Tiger OS.
Should I install Office 2011 first (currently use 2004 Office) BEFORE I install Snow Leopard, or after?

As long as you have the 10.6 DVD, you are all set. It probably contains 10.6.3, and you will then have to use Software Update to get to 10.6.8. You can do that with Word updated or not.
Upgrading to 10.7 will add a Lion Recovery partition to your Hard drive. When you are ready to do that, you may want to run Disk Utility Verify first.
All these cats make my head spin, so I just use the numbers.
If you are concerned about losing something, shouldn't you have a backup? Add word to your backup and don't worry about losing anything.

  • After installing MS Office 2011, Safari fonts are displaying incorrectly

I'm running OS X v. 10.6.4 on an Intel iMac.
This morning, I installed Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac, and when I went to my safari browser and googled something, my fonts look like the image below:
Even as I'm typing this now, this font is showing the same way! I did a thorough uninstall of MS Office, emptied my font cache, browser cache, reset safari, logged out + in, restarted my comp 100 times, and I'm at a loss.
Is it possible my arial font was corrupted somehow? I know Office installs its own evil fonts, which I'm pretty sure I have now deleted. How would I get a new, working version of the default Arial font and reinstall it?

Office 2011 installs a bunch of fonts that conflict with those installed by OS X. Read section 3 of Font Management in OS X to see which to remove, and which to keep.
I may receive some form of compensation, financial or otherwise, from my recommendation or link.

  • Trying to install MS Office 2011 for Mac SP 2 on my Macbook Air (Lion 10.7.3). I have to close Microsoft Database Daemon and SyncServicesAgent but can not see how to do so.  I have closed all applications.  Can anyone help? Many thanks

Trying to install MS Office 2011 for Mac SP 2 (14.2.0) on my Macbook Air (Lion 10.7.3). I have to close Microsoft Database Daemon and SyncServicesAgent but can not see how to do so.  I have closed all applications.  Can anyone help? Many thanks

Thanks Kurt!  I had tried all that and had tried closing both programmes from the application monitor, but SyncServices Agent refused to close.  I tried closing Launchd which is their mother application, but that just caused the screen go go blank.  In the end the two programmes let themselves be closed next time I tried the installation process so all was well.  Thanks for your help!

  • Do I have to upgrade to Snow Leopard before I can upgrade to Lion?

Chrome will no longer update unless I update my MacBook.  I have Leopard. Do I have to upgrade to Snow Leopard first before i can upgrade to Lion or can I go straight to Lion? And should I back up my hard drive first before I do an upgrade?

You need Apple Store to upgrade to Lion (unless you bought a usb with Lion on it).
Snow Leopard will have the App Store once you update.
This is how I did it Leopard --> Snow Leopard --> update to get the App Store --> Lion.
And Yes, you should always back up your hard drive before doing any upgrade : )
Btw, here's the unofficial way of updating Leopard to Lion.  I never tried it, can't say it will work, so do it at your own risk.

When I try to download the new iTunes for my iPhone 5, a pop up message comes saying i need 10.6.8 or higher. But even after I bought and installed snow leopard, it still comes up with the same message.

  • I have 10.5.8 and want to install the new itunes 10.7, in order to sync the new nano , but i am unable to.  Do I have to upgrade to snow leopard in order to sync new nano?

I have an imac (2009) with OS X 10.5.8 and i need to install the new itunes (10.7) in order to sync my new nano (7th generation).  Do I have to upgrade my software to Snow Leopard in order to run itunes 10.7?  How to I go about this?

Start by checking if you can run Snow Leopard:
Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
Whilst Apple have withdrawn Snow Leopard from their stores, you can still get it from Apple by calling 1-800-MY-APPLE (if you are in the USA) and they will supply the SL DVD for $20 for a single user, or $30 for a family pack that covers up to 5 Macs.  You can also purchase the code to use to download Lion from the same number (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard), or you can purchase Mountain Lion from the App Store - if you can run that:
    http://www.apple.com/osx/specs/
If you are outside the US call your national Apple Helpline:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
If you're in the UK, use this number: 0871 508 4400
When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard.
To use iCloud you have to upgrade all the way to Mountain Lion:

  • Upgrade from Snow Leopard vs. Clean Install of OS X Lion

With all the problems that have been reported, and continue to be reported here, what is the general feeling here when it comes to installing OS X Lion?
Are you better off to do a clean install versus upgrade to OS X Lion from Snow Leopard, or does it not matter at all?
I'm not looking to solve a problem here, but maybe our discussions here could solve other peoples' problems.
    Thank you,
    Marcus

If your machine is running well and without issue and
if you have checked everything out with various disk
and hardware utilities and they say everything is fine,
then upgrade should not be an issue.  But remember,
s*** happens and you could end up with alot of issues,
some just coincedentally occurring with the upgrade.
Make sure you have a restorable backup (clone or
    Time Machine) just in case.
Now, if over time you have accumulated a lot of flotsam
and stuff you don't need or want, then a clean install is the
way to go.  You will at least have some piece of mind that
any issues that occur, aren't caused by some obscure piece
of code loaded years ago that has just been carted along
and now rears its ugly head and is near impossible to identify.
Also, if intending to do a clean install, reformat the hard drive
with the write zeroes option enabled.  This will take longer but
will force the drive to map out any bad sectors that may have
    accumulated over time.
As for myself, I had gone the upgrade route on my three Macs.
Well, my score is 2 for 3.  My iMac and Macbook Pro went just
fine and are working well.  My Mac Mini on the other hand had some
serious issues, some of which are still unresolved.  All of them
related to its use as a media center for my home entertainment
system.  Probably, some one using as just a computer platform
may not even see the issues.  I haven't tried a clean install just
yet for the reasons that Barney-15E had mentioned.

Thank you Watts 300. I unfortunately cannot get the Mac to reboot. I have taken the SL disk out and reinserted a number of times, however the screen remains with the restart message. Crazy.I can power it off but the same restart message keeps appearing.

  • I just downloaded OSx Lion and now MS word won't work. If I buy and install MS Office 2011 for Macs will my old documents open?

I just downloaded OSx Mountain Lion and now MS Word won't work. If I buy the current MS Office 2011 and install will I be able to read my old docs?

If it's because you're trying to use Office 2004 or earlier, yes. Note that programs such as OpenOffice and TextEdit will do this for free.
If you're using Office 2008, it's probably better to troubleshoot the problem instead of upgrading.

  • I recently purchased a Macbook Pro w/Snow Leopard.  Subsequently I installed Microsoft Office v.X.  I am getting some unexpected results in Excel and Word.  For Excel the row and column headings are missing and I cannot print.  Work won't print.

I guess the basic question is ... will Microsoft Office v.X work correctly with MAC OS X 10.6.8?

Since MS stopped supporting Office X a couple of years before SL's release, my guess is no.

  • Re: hp 5510 won't print black before and after installing new cartridge. have done specified checks

I've followed all of the instructions and still no luck...what's worse is that I can't seem able to PM you for help.  Please get back in touch with me as I would like some sort of remedy.

    Hello Redwing1991,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums! I see you are running into some print quality issues on your HP Photosmart 5510, you are unable to print in black ink.
I see you have tried ALL steps listed here: Printer Does Not Print Black Ink or Color Ink, or Prints Blank Pages, with no success.
Please note: There are three printhead cleaning stages. Complete all three stages if necessary. If the printhead is badly clogged, it might require another cleaning cycle. If so, wait 30 minutes after the last (third) cleaning stage to start the first stage of the cleaning process over again.
I suspect the issue may be the printer and not the cartridge. Please let me know which Country/Region you are in as well as the product Warranty status: HP Warranty Checker
I hope to hear from you soon.
    Thanks,
    HevnLgh

  • IPhoto screensaver missing after upgrade to Snow Leopard

I have 3 Macs, all upgraded to Snow Leopard at the same time last year. For some reason one of them no longer has the iPhoto screensaver available from System Preferences. It's also not available as a choice for desktop picture. All 3 computers were upgraded from Leopard, all 3 used an album from iPhoto for screensaver and desktop background, but on one of the computers the iPhoto choice is no longer available in System Preferences for either screen saver or desktop background.
I'm currently using simply a folder of pictures for screen saver, but that means I've duplicated the images as files outside of iPhoto and an album in iPhoto. It's been this way for months, but I want to clean up the disk space and get rid of the external folder of pictures and get back to using the iPhoto album.
Suggestions as to what to do to restore the iPhoto choice in System Prefs? I'm running iPhoto '09 version 8.1.2 and SL 10.6.3.
    Thanks

Exactly what's missing? Is there an option to select an iPhoto Album in the SystemPreferences and it can't find the Library? Or simply no option in SystemPreferences?
    Regards
    TD

  • How far should I upgrade from snow leopard

how far should I upgrade from snow leopard.  I just installed more RAM for a total of 4 GB.
    Thanks

Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks/Yosemite.
To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.
iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) model number 7,1 or higher
    Your Mac needs:
OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed
2 GB or more of memory (More is better - 4 GB minimum seems to be the consensus)
8 GB or more of available space
Check to make sure your applications are compatible. PowerPC applications are no longer supported after 10.6.
    Application Compatibility
    Applications Compatibility (2)
    Do a backup before installing.
If you can/do upgrade, I recommend you make a copy of the installer and move it out of your Applications folder. The installer self-destructs. The copy will keep you from having to download the installer again.  You can make a bootable USB stick to install using this free program.
Bootable USB Flash Drive – Diskmaker X
If your computer isn’t compatible, you might be able to upgrade to Lion. Personal opinion, I'd stay with Snow Leopard rather than Lion.

install 6.5 before proceeding further. I coud not understand.
Just what it says - install os 10.6.5 before proceeding further.  You can either do so through Software Update or use the Combo update from Apple's download site.
You should repair permissions and restart your computer prior to updating and upgrading.
