Upgrade to solaris 10u6 x86 fails
I was able to upgrade from u4 to u5 just fine. Am I missing something? I boot off the cd and go through the initial configuration only to have everything stop at the end of install_begin.
It seems to have magically fixed itself after trying the same thing 10 times.

Solaris 10 x86 failed to install
Hi, I downloaded Solaris 10 x86 a few weeks ago.
I tried installed on a 32-bit old PC and it worked great.
I just got a new box. It is an AMD Athlon64 3000+ CPU/motherboard.
When I put the disk in, it loaded the installation assistant
and gave me this error message almost right away:
error: 64 PCI bit len unsupported
Is there any way I can install Solaris x86 on it? Or is my
CPU not on the supported list?
Thanks

Solaris 10 x86 failed to reboot after initial installation due to display error
Hi everyone,
i just finished installing solaris 10 x86 on my computer, and the installation process went smoothly. However, when the system tried to reboot, i got some error related to the display of the monitor, which caused no desktop login can be displayed and no access to the console. I had no way to proceed with the any other operations. The error read as:
" Out of range<br />
Hf 30KHz - 70KHz<br />
Vf 30Hz - 160 Hz<br />
Current frequency<br />
Hf 90.3KHz "
I tried to boot to solaris failsafe mode and run "kdmconfig"
command to reconfigure video and monitor, but it did not work, since kdmconfig is not supported under that mode.
Because i have no way to login, the currently available solution seems not working with my situation. Dose anyone have idea or suggestion to figure it out, without reinstalling the OS from the very beginning?
Very appreciate your time and help.Solution found:
First tried to login using "console login" when solaris booted up, before the desktop login window appeared. Then, run command "kdmconfig", changed the video device to X86 VESA compatible device, which is from the x86 driver and porting kit for solaris, then test/save and exit. After that, reboot the system. Now it is working, not perfect though (due to my old monitor) :)- -
BI Publisher Installation in Solaris 10 x86 failing.
Hello all,
I am trying to install BI Publisher on Solaris 10. During the pre-requisites check, it fails for Checking OS recommended patches, 127111-02 and 137111-04. If I ignore and continue, then the Distributing Repository is failing throwing the error
Error executing nqudmlexec - return code: 1stdout:
stderr:
How can I solve the issue.
Please help its urgent.
Thank you
Cheers
AshHello All,
Finally the installation got finished. The two things that held me for long are these
1) Operating System required Patches showing the wrong patch number. While you run the installer for the OBIEE 11g, during the pre-requisites check it failed for the fore said item. I had to run a lot for the answer.
The answer was pretty simple, the patch number shown by the installer was wrong (127111-02, 137111-04) These two patches are for the Solaris SPARC OS. Weirdly I was running the installation on a Intel Solaris VM. The respective patches for Intel Solaris 10 are 127112-02 and 137112-04, so moral of the story is ensure that these patches are in and ignore the failure message click NEXT
2) Now getting back to the error message posted here "Error executing nqudmlexec - return code: 1stdout:" This is because the LOCALE was not set to UTF-8
Steps to set the locale
i) ensure that UTF-8 is installed in you machine "localeadm -a en_US.UTF-8 -d /cdrom/cdrom0/Solaris_10/Product"
ii) can do a listing using locale -a to make sure that UTF-8 is in.
iii) make sure that the following packages are in "pkgadd SUNWi1cs SUNWi15cs SUNWnamos"
iv) set the LANG variable "export LANG=UTF-8"
And I had a smooth run. :) The pain was over...

Boot from second hard drive with ZFS in Solaris 10 x86
Hi,
The usual menu.lst to boot Solaris10 x86 with a boot environment that contains a ZFS boot loader is this one
title Solaris 10 5/08 s10x_nbu6wos_nightly X86
findroot (pool_rpool,0,a)
kernel$ /platform/i86pc/multiboot -B $ZFS-BOOTFS
module /platform/i86pc/boot_archive
title Solaris failsafe
findroot (pool_rpool,0,a)
kernel /boot/multiboot kernel/unix -s -B console=ttyb
module /boot/x86.miniroot-safeI understand that to add an alternate boot disk, I have to play with installgrub and then attach it in the pool.
But my question is : Is there a way to boot from my alternate hard disk by adding a new entry in menu.lst or is the only
way is to modify the BIOS parameter?
Thanks for your help,

Thanks for your answer Alan,
But ok, I imagineI can add a grub entry. But what I want to know is what is the exact way to boot from an alternate hard disk on Solaris 10u6
x86.AFAIK there are only two ways to do this. Select the disks via BIOS which becomes a royal PITA in a short amount of time or play with a boot manager such as GRUB until you get the syntax right.
Personally I put all OS's on the primary disks if possible to avoid these situations and if I have others to play with then you can easily mount them in or set them up as D: drive etc...
The only exception would be in an enterprise setting where you need to do things such as mirroring but then again in those situations it's only one OS per machine anyways so it's much easier.
So at the end, I am not sure what I have to configure and what is the procedure to boot from my alternate boot diskTry the grub homepage for the grub manual and hopefully for a mailing list or try a search engine.
http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/819-5461/zfsboot-1?a=view
has an example to follow of using -B.
And moreover, the installgrub does not working for me :
root@mac1 # zpool status
pool: rpool
state: ONLINE
scrub: resilver completed after 0h2m with 0 errors on Thu Mar 26 10:56:24 2009
config:
NAME STATE READ WRITE CKSUM
rpool ONLINE 0 0 0
mirror ONLINE 0 0 0
c5t0d0s0 ONLINE 0 0 0
c5t4d0s0 ONLINE 0 0 0
errors: No known data errors
root@mac1 # installgrub /boot/grub/stage1 /boot/grub/stage2 /dev/rdsk/c5t4d0s0
cannot open/stat device /dev/rdsk/c5t4d0s2
You shouldn't need to do an installgrub if you installed Solaris. Try c5t4d0s0 not s2.

I upgraded to Solaris 11 x86 and Firefox 3.6.10. I have sound through Solaris but not through Firefox or any of the add-ons.
I am using USB speakers which work with Solaris Rythmbox. How can I redirect Firefox audio to my USB speakers? It works fine, thank you. There is one glitch when I turn off my system and on the next day the audio is missing again. Applying the dsp to dsp 0 reboot and then back to dsp1 reboot I get the audio back.
Is there any way to restart the process? -
Solaris 10(x86) u4 8/07 Upgrade Install trashes disk label
In 4 attempts now to upgrade a working Solaris 10(x86) u2 6//06 system to Solaris 10 8/07 the upgrade fails. If the system reboots at the end of the upgrade, the system is stuck at the grub prompt. When options are set to NOT reboot at the end of the install, inspection of the system produces:
- I/O errors with df command for /a and /a/var (see next point for why)
- using format command to inspect partition table reveals that an "effectively empty" label with zero length slices for s0,s1,s3-s7 has been written to the disk effectively trashing the installation and the previously defined partition layout.
This upgrade failure occurs if using a non-upgraded 6/06 install or a fully updated install. The 6/06 install is partitioned with partitions for /, swap, /var, and /export/home. The system I am trying to upgrade is a test system (laptop with 768MB) and is basically a fresh install of 6/06. I am trying to define and validate the procedure to upgrade a 6/06 system to 8/07.
I have not explored using Live Upgrade yet as I suspect the same problem will occur to the target if the fault lies in the installer on the DVD.
Has anyone experienced this issue and can anyone point me in the right direction to remedy this failure? In 4 attempts now to upgrade a working Solaris 10(x86) u2 6//06 system to Solaris 10 8/07 the upgrade fails. Couldn't upgrade Solaris 10 x86 from Sun Fire x2200 to Dell Precision Wrkst
Dear Solaris Experts,
I need to clone a Solaris 10 x86 system using a ufsdump backup from the following source & target servers:
Sun Fire x2200 M2 with Quad Core Processor
# /usr/platform/`uname -i`/sbin/prtdiag
System Configuration: Sun Microsystems Sun Fire X2200 M2 with Quad Core Processr
BIOS Configuration: Sun Microsystems S39_3D12 10/06/2008
# uname -a
SunOS old 5.10 Generic_139556-08 i86pc i386 i86pc
to
Dell Precision WorkStation 390
# /usr/platform/`uname -i`/sbin/prtdiag
System Configuration: Dell Inc. Precision Workstation 390
BIOS Configuration: Dell Inc. 2.3.0 05/01/2007
# uname -a
SunOS 5.10 Generic_139556-08 i86pc i386 i86pc
Unfortunately, Solaris kept rebooting (failed to boot) from the restored primary disk (both / & /export/home) even though Grub menu appeared. As a result, I have embarked on the path of upgrading path using the same Solaris 10 Installation Disk (5/09) DVD but failed due to not able to mount / (c0t0d0s0), swap and /export/home (c0t0d0s7).
The source Sun Fire x2200 had two mirrored disks but I am restoring the backups to a single harddisk. Any idea on what step has been missed or that it is not possible to go down this path altogether.
I have tried a number of different reinstallations & restores but have not had much luck still.
Many thanks,
JackI should have searched the forums first. This was the solution to my issue....

Solaris 8 x86 system refuses to upgrade to Solaris 9
My x86 system successfully runs Solaris 8 (Feb. 2000 revision A) but refuses to upgrade to Solaris 9. When trying to boot one of the installation cds in anyone of the installation modes, the boot process proceeds till the message "booting kernel/unix, ... use is subject to license terms". Next I would expect setup messages for the network interface, but instead I get a blank screen with a cursor blinking top left, and that's the end of it.
Well, to be true, it's not really a problem of Solaris 9. The same thing happened when I tried to install a patch set on Solaris 8.
What ways of diagnosis do I have?
Is anything in Solaris 8 not upward compatible?
Thanks in advance for every hint!
Bernd.OK after the DCA scans, it goes to a screen labeled "Boot Solaris" which indicates the boot drive. On that screen f4 is labeled Boot Tasks. Press f4 and go thru the settings to select the boot device and any of the other settings you might want to change. then f3 back to the boot screen and f2 continue. When the boot options screen appears, type in b -r. The DCA should not start up each time after that. To be honest, I had to do this a couple of times before something unknown to me made it finally work. Go figure!

Solaris 10 x86 Installation Fails to Start
I am trying to install Solaris 10 x86 05/08 on a Sony PCG-K115S laptop. The issue I am having is that the installation hangs after printing the copyright information and does not go any further. I get no error message or status as to what the installation is doing.
I downloaded the dvd iso from sun website and verified the md5 checksum before burning the dvd more than once but the issue occurred in both dvds.
The laptop currently has XP installed but there is 30GB of free unallocated/partitioned space on the disk.
Are there any options I can active to debug the installation and see where and why it is stalling.
Thank you,
F.
Edit 1:
After some forum reading I activated the Kernel Debugger and verbose mode:
The installation hangs after this line is printed out:
echi0 is /pci@0,0/pci104d,8175@c,2
loaded modules: [uppc neti ufs unix krtld uhci hook genunix ip usba specfs pcplusmp cpu.generic sctp arp]
Does this strike a cord with anybody??
Edit 2:
After some more reading and investigation, I read that this could be caused by my USB controller not being recognoized or some USB 2.0 issues with Solaris 10.
I have tried to deactive the usb system with the options "-B acpi_user_options=2" and "-B acpi_user_options=8" but with no luck. (I got about these on some some forum, not sure if they are correct).
Any help is appreciated!!
Thank you,
F.

Solaris 8 x86 Install Webstart Fails w/ 3C900-TPO
I'm using this forum in the hope that a Sun support person will read this and correct the problem in the install, since I don't see a place on the Sun website to report a problem without paying for it. I was able to work around this problem.
I was attempting to install Solaris 8 x86 (10/01) using the Interactive Installation on a home-built PC with a 3-Com 3C900-TPO ethernet card (one of the "supported" cards). Whenever I had the card installed the Solaris install went OK until after the automatic reboot (when it was time to insert CD #2), then Webstart would croak with an unexpected error (but no error message).
After removing the NIC card, I tried again from the beginning and the installation completed perfectly. I repeated this test twice with the same results.
The workaround was to go ahead and install CD #2 manually.
Hope this helps others out there...Thanks for all of the helpful responses. I figured out the problem.
