Upgrade to superdrive on MDD FW 800 DP 1.25

Further to my last post - am looking to upgrade the DVD/CD Combo drive on the MDD FW 800 DP 1.25/ATAPI to a DVD burner. Can anyone recommend a good economical upgrade drive available in UK?
Thanks....BC

If the MDD is running 10.4.x, you'll need PatchBurn for full support...

  • Can you help advise re video card upgrade for my G4 MDD?

Hello all. Just upgraded to Tiger from 10.2.8 a couple weeks ago. Should have done it long ago... like having a new computer! I want to get more out of the OS for mostly graphic apps like PS-CS2, Painter, Freehand, Fontographer, etc. Right now I have 1.5 GB of RAM & will probably max it out pretty soon.
No video or games (at least for near term). Have been doing homework by lurking here, studying mfr. sites & reading things like John Siracusa's great article (book) on arstechnica.com: "Mac OSX 10.4 Tiger". I spent a lot of last night digesting that. So I think I know what I want to do, but would appreciate opinions.
    1. I'd like to get a graphics card that will get my G4 to Core Image-enabled. According to this -- http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/coreimage/ -- and other advice I've run across in these forums, I should probably get a Radeon 9800 (or 9600) Pro Mac Edition. The downside w this is just that they're currently not to be found at any dealers I've called or googled because of the AMD merger/backorder situation. Same goes for the 9600. Bummer. In the meantime I'm wondering if one of Nvidia models listed in the Apple page might work in my machine. Probably not... but does anyone know different? Here are the models listed:
    nVidia GeForce FX Go 5200
    nVidia GeForce FX 5200 Ultra
    nVidia GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL
    6800 GT DDL
I think I've seen most of these configured for AGP 4x, as I would need. Just don't know if any would fit into my G4... or if it would support the power requirements, heat levels, and so on that these things apparently generate.
    2. I have another requirement besides just running Tiger happily. I have hundreds of fairly big image files that all still need a lot of work, for a book project I've been commissioned to do. Average file size around 200MB. And more than half of them are in a "Legacy" proprietary format used by an out of print app called Live Picture. So even just to convert all of them from that IVUE / FITS format scheme I still need either classic or 9.2 for a while. I can still do some things in L.P. better than in Photoshop.
It's a pretty interesting piece of software. The IVUE file is the base bitmap image. All corrections are in Vector layers on top. When done, the layers you want to apply are turned on and the final (or workaround buildout) is rendered as a TIFF, PS or stn file. (It also has a great prepress filtering engine to optimize cmyk for specific outputs). This app is VERY monitor drawing intensive - especially for layers with textures or selective color mods. When I was an early adopter in the program years ago, the developers constantly told us to do things like use as small a window as possible; turn off antialiasing unless really needed; build out intermediate IVUE's before collecting too many complex layers, and things like that. It has it's own VM system, and it does not like another Virtual Mem. running. Of course in Classic you can't turn off the OSX VM!
Development on this app stopped the arrival of OSX, and I think even before OS9! It was crash-prone back then, and of course is even more fussy in Classic. I can boot in OS9, but for some reason prefer the "security" of protected mode, since these new-fangled machines no longer have that civilized reset button.
So if I understand things properly, I want a graphics engine that will take the load off RAM for Quartz Extreme tasks. I've come to think that maxing RAM AND VRAM utilization will let me do more before the crash. Am I right?
Not necessarily the same needs as for Photoshop in Tiger; but for me right now this is my critical/important working environment, as this is a big paid project (it will be a vintage watch coffee table book - which draws from a couple of the world's notable private collections). It shouldn't be long before I'll be getting a MacPro anyway. Am sort of holding out for the sophomore edition, and Leopard.
What would you guys do? Thanks in advance for your consideration. I will greatly value your input.
    Best regards,
    Mike
    G4 MDD 867, G4 Q'slvr 733   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   also iBook G3 900 10.4.8 (G4 733 still running 10.2.8)
    G4 MDD 867, G4 Q'slvr 733   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   also iBook G3 900 10.4.8 (G4 733 still running 10.2.8)

Thanks very much for the info. Kind of what I thought.
Re their price gouging - Ouch! A 66% markup from retail, and they're refurbished. I think I can wait a month or so... of course if those cards were dc'd, I might consider it. But I talked to a guy at ATI, and he didn't give any such indication.
I did find a GeForce4 Ti4600 (NOS) for a pretty reasonable figure at another site, but that's an older, slower card. I'm impatient, so I'm tempted, but I think I'd be kicking myself if I didn't wait for the better solution.
Are you saying that I won't really do any better in Classic with the ATI, compared to my stock GeForce4 32MB? Forgot to mention I'm using a 22" Cinema (ADC), if that makes any difference. And I'll be running Classic probably on top of Jaguar (I installed Tiger on a fresh new second internal drive). I thought I'd skip mixing Classic with Tiger altogether, but when I booted up the first time, there it was in Sys. Pref's. I guess it saw OS9 on the other drive during install. That's sort of funny.
I guess my question is mostly answered. Will put up the flag shortly.
    Thanks again.

  • Upgrading to Superdrive?

I have the 2004 model ibook G4 14" that came with a cd-burning/dvd-rom drive. I would like to upgrade to a dvd-burning drive. Should I get an external drive (USB or firewire) or is there any way to replace my current internal drive with a superdrive which is now offered with the newer model 14"ibooks? Thanks for your help!

    Hi Josh,
Yes, it is possible, but I don't think it is that wise. By installing a superdrive into your computer you are increasing the risk of problems with your iBook in the future as well as voiding any warranty that you may still have. Replacing the SuperDrive is not as easy as it looks; you basically take everything apart. I have done it to a few iBook G4s that needed their combo drive replaced, but I didn't upgrade theirs. If you want a SuperDrive that is compatible with your iBook, you should go to iFixit.com. There you can find SuperDrives (known to work with your computer) like this one. You can also get a guide on how to install it yourself (at iFixit). As I said before, I don't recommend it.
I would have to say get an external DVD+/-RW because you will be more satisfied with it. You will be able to burn a larger variety of discs with much faster speeds. If you would like any suggestions on external optical drives, let us know.
If you really want a SuperDrive installed in your computer, I suggest places like PowerBookResQ. The link that I just posted is one of the options you can buy to get your SuperDrive installed. It is a(n) 8x Super Drive Dual-Layer. It will work with your iBook G4.

  • Upgrade/Replace G4 Dual MDD PPC to Intel Desktop

I've been on on SSI Disability since 2004, being a 24 year survivor of a anaplastic Oligodendroglioma brain tumor diagnosis in 1988, with a need to replace my old PPC Mac to new hardware and software for compatibility with the newest Apple software, Adobe Design Premium, Acrobat Pro 9, Photoshop Extended and QuarkXPress 9 software. I have a two-monitor configuration with a USB Wacom Stylus pad, separate keyboard and 800 Firewire.
With my disability I have limited funds to upgrade, but have been a loyal Mac user since 1991 when I was permanently laid off as Art Director for a large commercial print shop, because of my medical condition. I then started my own freelancing business as a graphic design concept specialist from that time until the present. I just finished designing a new logo for a new medical research lab at UCSD and Annual Report for Berger Hospital Foundation.
I recently had my 3rd craniotomy surgery 02/06/2012 and am recovering well. I am one lucky guy!
I thought I'd start asking for help in this forum to see what anyone here, or at Apple, might suggest or recommend in the way of financial help. You can find me on facebook and LinkedIn by sending a request to friend Ted Abel. I can also send more info in a Word.doc with more details or contact info. Any suggestions would be most appreciated!
    Thanks, Ted

I was able to transfer all my Address book contacts from my PPC G4 over to an Intel PowerBook Pro that my brother gave me, and I re-installed most of my main apps. The only problem I have now is getting my old PPC Mail Mailboxes transferred to the PowerBook Pro.  I have a lot of email info stored in each one of the PPC created mailboxes and don't know if I can even do what I want to do. Is there any way I can do this?
Thanks for any suggestions or recommendations.

  • Cannot upgrade Flash Player from 11.8.800.94 to 11.8.800.174

I have Flash Player 11.8.800.64 on Windows 8 on my laptop.  I want to upgrade to 11.8.800.174 but I cannot because when I try to a screen comes up saying it is unnecessary to install.
I cannot watch videos because the screen is always green.  Everyone is telling me to adjust the video settings but I cannot.  THERE ARE NO VIDEO SETTINGS AVAILABLE WHEN I RIGHT CLICK.  The only settings are Privacy, Local Storage, Microphone, and Camera.  I don't know why.  In all the help videos there is another option for video but it does not exist for me when I right click.  Frustrating.
Also, I am in Desktop mode, not Modern mode.  I watched that unhelpful video three times.
I used to be able to watch videos fine but now I cannot watch any at all and nothing has changed.  Strange.
I want to upgrade but cannot.  Mainly I just want to watch videos without the green screen.

Flash Player on Windows 8 is updated by Windows Update.
Regarding "green" screen; that usually indicates an outdated graphics driver; see http://forums.adobe.com/thread/945765

  • Will the Software Update to 10.4.7 install firmware upgrade for SuperDrive?

Will the Software Update to 10.4.7 install firmware upgrade for a SuperDrive?
I have a Mac mini and I've just let the Software Update run as needed, but I am confused by the number of Apple update downloads listed.
I don't believe I need them, when I just use Software Update?
Seems like a simple question, but I was on Windows for the last 10 years.
    Thanks,

  • Any videos slow/stuck after upgrading to new Flash 11.8.800.94

After upgrading to the new flash 11.8.800.94 on Firefox 23, the videos are stuck. I have uninstalled and reinstalled any/all versions of Adobe Flash, but still the same issue. I went back to Flash 10.3 version For Windows and it works fine. But I am little skeptical in using it as it does not have protection for the swf security issues. Till then I plan to revert back to Chrome, as it as well as IE works fine with Flash 11.8 version. Pls let me know if you have any solution.

I also have the same issue, which started last week. I am running FireFox 23 on Windows 7. Flash 11.8x (and also 11.7x) causes Firefox to hang when opening a web page that has flash content on it. This issue is not with the flash video content playing as the web site is hangs before I even have a chance to launch the flash video. I have to start task manager in Windows 7 to kill the firefox process to get control of the browser back. I also went back to Flash 10.3 and the web sites are fine opening, no issues. Please let me know if you have any questions.

  • How to upgrade to SuperDrive

Anyone knows how to upgrade a 1GHZ eMac with Combo drive to a SuperDrive. I'm looking for detailed procedure documentation.
    Thanks a lot

  • Upgrade to SuperDrive

My eMac doesn't have a DVD burner, but I would like to make DVD backups of music and photos.
How do I go about upgrading my Combo drive to a Super drive? I currently can't even burn CDs on my Combo drive.

Is there something wrong with the combo drive as you should be able to burn CDs.
But to answer your question, yes, you can replace the combo drive with an internal superdrive. Search these boards for others experience. Here is one such example...

Alternatively you could buy an external DVD burner as well.

  • Upgrade Graphics card on MDD without buying an adapter for my Display??

Hey guys, I just acquired a PowerMac G4 and have been steadily upgrading it to get it running as fast it possibly can. With the PowerMac G4 came a Apple Studio Display. What are my options for the graphics card without having to shell out 90 dollars for an adapter? I still got to upgrade my ram to 2 gigs and want to get this done with as soon as possible
    Thanks
    Vito

    Hi
As far as I'm aware, the only graphics cards better than the stock cards that will work in a MDD G4 and have an ADC connector are the ATI Radeon 9700 Pro and NVidia GeForce4 Titanium, both of which were available as built to order options from Apple. I think retail versions may have also been available but could well have been DVI rather than ADC. They seem to pop up on eBay occasionally.

  • Upgrading a power mac mdd

I recently purchased a power mac mdd dual 1ghz processor. I'm trying to install 2 additional hard drives to no avail. I dont have the additional bay which is located under the optical drives is there away I could purchase one or some how work around not having this bay? Also I can not remove the bay which houses the original hard drive. I'm seriously stuck any suggestions

When it comes to the drive bay which houses your current hard drives, there should be a white plastic catch on one side. If you lift this the drive bay carrier should lift free.
As for your drive bay under the optical drives theres little you can do but buy a new drive carrier in think. Here is the link to purchase one though this is UK so im not usre whether it will suit your needs.
    http://www.applemacparts.co.uk/store/productinfo.php?cPath=7445_7475_7601_7602&productsid=64530
The price is quite steep sadly because i think its a case of they have it and you want it so they can charge what they like. Other than that theres one going on ebay.com substantually cheaper here:
    http://cgi.ebay.com/Hard-Drive-Carrier-for-PowerMac-G4-MDD_W0QQitemZ130116985516 QQihZ003QQcategoryZ51035QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem
When installing your drives make sure they are setup for 'cable select mode'
this is very important as if they are not it can cause all kinds of problems. This is dont by changing the pin jumpers on the drive which should have instructions on it as to what pins do what.
If your Powermac hasnt had drives in the lower bay before make sure you reset the PMU after you have installed them otherwise they wont mount, or thats the problem i found anyway. This will reset your date and clock so you will have to correct those when you power up but it more importantly resets the power management so you hard drives wil power up. Instructions on how to do this can be found here.

    Hope all of this helps

  • Mavericks upgrade and superdrive

Hello,  Mavericks is installed on my macbook pro 13' mi-2010 since yesterday but now my notebook don't accept any CD or DVD. Is it normal or is thare a solution. Thanks for your help. JEFF

I have posted a fix to the internal Mavericks Superdrive problem in this thread:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5515067
Pharlock, maybe the trick will work for your external Superdrive too?
    agb76 wrote:
I had the same problem after installing Mavericks on a late 2008 MBP.
I tried reseting NVRAPM/PRAM and SMC but that did not work.
Then I ran some drutil commands and eventually got the superdrive to wake up.
I'm not sure which command did the trick so please try running these commands from terminal in the following order.
    drutil status
    drutil info
    drutil getconfig
    drutil eject
Now try inserting a DVD.  If that doesn't work please try the above sequence with a DVD partially inserted in the drive.  I dont think that matters, but I did have a CD partially inserted when I fixed my superdrive.

  • Lion upgrade and superdrive

after loading lion the superdrive does not recognize any of my dvds even though with snow leopard there was no problem.

    To fix this problem,
    1. Open Terminal.
    2. Copy and paste this code:
    sudo rm /private/var/db/mds/system/mds.install.lock
    3. Reboot computer. (If hangs reboot again)
    4. Fixed! Enjoy!
Its an easy fix that Apple should include in their next update

  • Radeon 9200 upgrade to dual 867 MDD

Anyone have experience with the Radeon 9200 Mac video card? I’m looking for something that’ll run a 32” HDTV monitor at 1366x768 or 1280x720, I can’t currently do widescreen. I realize an AGP card would probably be better, but I also have an Apple monitor that I use with the machine that requires an ADC connection, and the 9600/9800 cards won’t do that; I’d need to get a $100 adapter from Apple. I just want to use the 32” to run iPhoto slideshows and look at some EyeTV videos, no gaming or fancy graphics work. Macsales said it would work, although ATI said no.
    Rob

For what it's worth, ATI's web site does not show the Radeon 9200 as discontinued as of this morning, and OWC (macsales.com) does sell the 9200 (here: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/ATI%20Technologies/100436014/).
I have a retail RME 9200 in a Beige G3 and it does not have a ADC connector. It has VGA, DVI and S-video, so would not solve your problem. You're better off trying to find an OEM card with ADC that someone pulled from a working Mac when they upgraded the card.
Also, the lack of PCI graphics card support in some OSX functions (like Quartz Extreme) mean that 2D function is rather sluggish with the 9200. It's a great card for 3D apps but not so great with 2D functions like scrolling, OSX eye candy, and photo editing.

  • Upgrading G5 SuperDrive

I have a dual 1.8 G5 with 1 gig of ram and it has an old 4x dvd drive. I THINK I want to upgrade the drive to a new dual layer one. Doesn't that mean I can store more on a disk? Does this new type of drive work directly with iDVD and such? Also, where do I get the media for it? I haven't seen anything on the apple store. What type of drive do I need (model #, etc)
    Thanks
