Upgrade to Tiger???? CPU Upgrade????

On my iMac I have os 10.2.8.( Ebay $75!) Most of the software I want to run either requires a G4 or os 10.3.9.(Though I'm impressed with OS X,I haven't used my windows pc in 3 weeks!) If I installed Tiger on my system, would the performance go out the window as I have heard others say? What if I upgraded the ram to 1gb? And is there a way to upgrade the CPU on this modelto a G4 ? (Though I'm impressed with OS X haven't used my windows pc in 3 weeks!)I'm a beginner and don't know much yet so any help is much appreciated.

Any iMac G3 should be fine in OS X for simple Internet/Office tasks. For just shy of $200 plus shipping you could get a 400/550MHz G4 processor installed. But even this won't really be credible for much video editing etc. I found Panther to be the first credible version of OS X, (Tiger needs more RAM and graphics power) and it should run basic tasks in 1Gb fairly well (assuming you have a slot-loader, otherwise 512Mb is the Max). Apple no longer sells Panther but it is available online.
You can compare RAM prices here
Personally I'd use the iMac G3 to learn the basics of OSX (10.2.8 isn't even close to how good Tiger is but it's the same kind of principle) and save the money of Tiger ($129) and the upgrades get saving for an iMac Intel with Tiger/(Leopard?) pre-installed (from $1100 in the refurb Apple Store online) or a Mac Mini (from $600) which will be far far more capable.

  • Tiger CPU Drop In DVD seems to work

    Hello All,
I just "Archive and Installed" Tiger from a "CPU Drop In DVD." I was very leery of it because of other posts and advice. However, everything seems to have gone just fine. I am now using 10.4.11 without any problem. The DVD is black with a grey "X" on it.
If you're looking for Tiger, then you could call ExperCom.com. I could not buy Tiger from them, but they sold me Leopard for $95 and sent me this Tiger CPU Drop-In DVD, as well. That's cheaper than the versions from other places.
For the experts here, anything I could be looking at to confirm it's a good install? Other than using it of course. I've e-mailed, surfed, iTune'd, and MS Office'd.

    lilpoot:
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
When you buy a computer shortly before the release of a major OS, your computer ships with the current OS, then after the release of the new OS, an upgrade disk is issued. These disks are usually computer specific and will not work well on computers to which they are not specific.
To upgrade your OS from Panther to Tiger, your computer will need to meet the minimum system requirements for Tiger. In addition, you will need to purchase the Full Retail Version of Tiger. Tiger is no longer available at the Apple Store but is still available for $129 by calling Apple Phone Sales 1-800-692-7753. If you know what you are looking for, read all documentation carefully and ask questions of the seller, you may be able to get Tiger on eBay.

  • Cannot startup from Tiger installer DVD

I am not able to restart from the OS 10.4 DVD. After several seconds of spinning with the apple on the screen I get a circle with a line through it and the spinning just continues

simply mac wont start up from usb devices... u need
an external firewire device to be able to boot...
Okay, that helps me. My device will do firewire, I'll just have to find the correct cable.
While I'm here, lemme explain my situation.
Recently, my father purchased an iMac with OS 9.2 preloaded on it for me (I'm mainly a windows user, but I've used an OS X machine at school so I'm fairly comfortable with Mac, and I'm adapting to OS 9). After tinkering for a while, I came to the conclusion that in order to make full use of my Mac, I'd probably want to upgrade to OS X. So my father went and purchased a copy of OS X from owcomputing.com (I'm thinking it's preowned as the seal was previously cut and taped together).
As all disks are DVDs, and iMacs have a CD-ROM drive, I connected a USB DVD drive to it and atempted to install. I have a black disk, reads "Mac OS X Tiger CPU Drop In DVD" and mentions "This software is part of a hardware bundle--not to be sold seperately" (it was bundeled with software, but not hardware. So perhaps that may be a problem). When I click the restart button from the installer it tells me it could not set to start from that disk.
As besous here has said, that probably means it just doesn't like the USB connection, I'll seek a means to make it firewire. In the meantime, it's mentioned in this thread that the grey software discs may or may not work for me as they did not come with my Mac originally. They read "eMac Software Install and Restore" Discs 1 & 2. This once again suggests the CDs were bundeled with a Mac previously and now is being sold separately as that's entirely the wrong model of Mac.
ALAS, those grey discs also read they're "Mac OS version 10.3.3". The black one says "Mac OS version 10.4". Does this mean I can disregard the two greys as they're for the wrong model of Mac and for a lesser version? And I should be okay to install off the black disk once I hook up the firewire cord for my external DVD drive correct?

  • OS X Tiger and CPU Upgrades

I have a 400 MHz G4. I primarily use it for FCP 2 and music but have been having problems seeing my Que Fire firewire cdrw. I have thought about a CPU upgrade and want to add a DVD+-RW to copy projects out to DVD's instead of tapes. With the trouble of having to hack a driver in 9.2 to get a DVD unit to work - would it be easier to upgrade to OS X Tiger to get around the DVD issues and get new features but am I only going to have more issues because of the upgraded CPU. The Apple specs say OS X is not compatible with upgrades but the manufacturers of the cpu upgrades say they are. Several of the new OS X DVD units I've looked at require at least 500MHz. (I posted earlier on the OS 9 forum - my old cdrw works on a new FW equipped laptop with Tiger.) I'm trying to get some more life out of my old G4 because I can't afford to buy a new G5. Any suggestions???? Thanks

You will triple the stated clock speed, but in no way
will the machine run 3 times as fast. You'll be lucky
to notice much change at all.
Yes you're right, in real world terms the machine won't be 3 times as fast, as you're still stuck with the same 100MHz system bus and memory etc, but I think that saying you'll be lucky to notice much change at all is a little unfair.
I recently upgraded the processor in one of my Macs and the difference was very noticeable, from reduced boot/rendering/encoding times to greater all round responsiveness.
If you're moving from OS 9 to OS X and you don't upgrade the processor, I expect OS X will feel pretty sluggish in comparison, although like you say more RAM will help.

  • Upgrading Tiger 10.4.11 - Leopard 10.5 via CPU Drop-in DVD Not working????

    Hi All
Finally decided to upgrade my Tiger to Leopard on my late 2007 15" Intel Core Duo MBP.
When I purchased my MBP the Leopard Drop-in DVD was included. I'm trying to upgrade using this to no avail??
    Procedure:
    1) Insert drop-in dvd
    2) access Disk Utilities
    3) verify/repair permissions
    4) verify disk
    5) restart MBP
    6) click on install (dvd)
    7) select English
    8) customize --> Archive & Install
At this point the installation process begins... it says it's verifying DVD then hangs?? If I choose to SKIP the verify bit... it still hangs?
Side note: My optical DVD drive sounds like it spins up then stops?
    Any advice appreciated...

    thanks sig...
so with the drop-in dvd can i ONLY UPGRADE?
(so i cannot do a fresh install? -- they provide options there to do so? archive/install & erase/install)
i have tried booting many times from cd also... same dice... seems to hang after i select english then hit continue.

  • Unable to print from Photoshop CS4 in an iMac OS 10.6.3 to large format printer Epson 11880

Hi there! I was wondering if you could help me with this case.
Old computer: Mac G4  (purchased in 2002)
    Old OS: OS 10.4.11  (Tiger)
    CPU: Dual 1.25 GHz
    Memory: 2 RAM
    Software: Photoshop 7
Hardware: Large format printer: Epson 11880 (64” wide monster). Prints large posters, banners, etc.
As you can see, it is time for an upgrade...
    New computer: iMac
New OS: OS 10.6.3  (Snow Leopard)
    Processor Name: Intel Core i7
    Processor Speed: 2.8 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 4
    Memory: 16 GB
    Software: Photoshop CS4
Hardware: Large format printer: Epson 11880
Situation: We hooked up everything and managed to print on the 11880 printer 2 times and printed two large format prints. On the third attempt, we encountered a serious problem...
Problem: After opening a file in Photoshop and sending it out for printing in the large format Epson printer, the file goes to the printer queue and stays there for 6 seconds, and then it disappears. It does not print. :-(
What we have done so far:
We made sure we downloaded the latest printer driver for this printer from Epson’s website.
The printer driver is correct. The computer talks to the printer and we are able to execute all the commands from the printer utilities panel. (i.e. check ink levels, clean heads, etc.)
And yes, the printer is okay, because we have been using it with the old G4 machine for about a year.
This problem got so frustrating, that we thought that something we transferred during the computer installation might be the culprit. So at one point we erased the hard drive on the new computer and reinstalled the operating system, and have not put any files from any old computers into this machine. The computer has nothing else in it. Except: The operating systems, and the Mac applications that come when the Mac comes out of the box. The only other program installed in it is Photoshop CS4 and the printer driver.
We were wondering if this was just a printing problem, period. So we added a small printer to the computer - and old Epson 2200 we have. We sent a file to this printer and there is not problem.
Perhaps, the file size might have been an issue? It does not matter. We can send a large 60 MB file to the printer or a small photograph measuring only 8 x 10, and these will linger in the queue for 6 seconds, and disappear never to be printed.
Temporary relief came when we got rid of Adobe Photoshop’s Preferences file. After getting rid of the file and allowing Photoshop to reconstruct it, we managed to print two large files on the printer. Then it failed again. Tried getting rid of the preferences again, and the trick did not work anymore. :-(
Another temporary relief came when we created another user in the computer. On the new user account it printed again a couple of times only to fail later.
And yes, the printer WILL print from other Mac programs. If for instance, we open a file on Preview, and send it to the printer and the file will be printed. And yes, we have managed to print very large files with this method.
In the last couple of days, we have spent 3 hours on the phone with the guys at Epson. They verified the driver and because the computer seems to be communicating with the printer and printing from other Mac applications, they suspected that the problem is with Adobe.
We called Adobe once, and spent 30 minutes with an Indian fellow who concluded that the problem was with how the computer handles the spooling. According to him, Photoshop sends the file to the computer and the computer seems to get rid of it. So he passed the buck and told us that the problem was with Apple.
We called Apple and spoke for 30 minutes with a friendly technician, who transferred us to a higher level techno-geek. I spent 1 more hour on the phone with Apple, and we tried everything. We went through Adobe’s knowledgebase and tried every suggested solution (see Adobe’s KB406452). It was with him that we found a temporary fix of removing the Preferences file, but the solution was short lived. He finally thought the problem was with Adobe as the printer is able to print from all applications EXCEPT Adobe Photoshop.
We called Adobe for the second time...and after waiting on hold from 1 entire hour, we got an Indian technician, that bless his heart, had a very thick accent and had no expertise, in my opinion. He was good at collecting data and he even made me share my computer screen so that he could troubleshoot the problem. After being constantly put on hold by him (because he had to consult with someone else), he passed the buck and said that it was Apple’s problem. I just told him that it was not as likely because all programs print EXCEPT Photoshop. After trying what I would consider a “hail Mary” of DELETING all the printers from my Library folder, and not replacing them, he recorded a case number for another Adobe technician to call us in a few days.
Because the above technician completely blew the Library, I just erased and reinstalled the OS. This time, I did not allow the OS to be updated - from 10.6.2 (that comes in the box), to 10.6.3. We tried printing using the 10.6.2 and had the same problem. :-(
Conclusion: I think it is a problem of Adobe CS4 not getting along with Apple’s new operating system. The Epson printer is doing fine, because it has been a product that has been in the market for almost 3 years. What is disappointing is that none of the companies wants to man up and say that it is a problem and that they are willing to work on it. Instead they pass the buck to the next company.
I can’t believe I am the only person experiencing this. Has anyone had this problem, and have you found a solution or workaround for it?

Dear Doyle, John and Gator Soup,
Thank you for your kind replies to my problem.
PS is assigned 70% RAM. In fact, I have never had so much RAM in my life. Files open at lightning fast speed! :-)  We have never considered a RIP as we do not have an intense workload. In fact all the files we have tried to print print well on our old G4 with Tiger and Photoshop 7, which at the moment has saved our butt. However it would be nice to get the new faster machine with Photoshop CS4 to talk to the Epson 11880.
Yes, we are printing directly to the printer. We have hooked up the computer via a 6 ft USB cable to the unit.
The specs and pixel dimensions of a typical file we print are:
Type of file: tif  (in this case it is an RGB file) // However, we avoid any color management from the computer or the printer when printing it at this time.
    File size: 60 MB
    Pixel size: 6796 x 3100
    Print size: 34" x 16" @ 200 dpi
I have not tried saving it as a pdf yet. Will try that next.
I did go to the Console on the Mac though, and recorded its activity between 5:14 pm - 5:19 pm when I tried to print a file.
Remember, the symptoms are:  We send a file to the printer...The file goes to the printer queue, and it lingers there for 6 seconds. The file then disappears.
Although there is a cryptic message of "invalid colorspace" in the log, I don't believe that the file is corrupt. First because we have tried several files, second because smaller versions of these can be printed in another Epson 2200 printer, and third because the large format images can still be printed using our old G4 machine with Tiger and Photoshop 7.
This might provide me with extra ammunition for when I call both Adobe and Apple on Monday. Apple has been quite good on customer support - particularly when they upgrade you to higher level geeks. ;-)   Do you have any idea I what time I should call Adobe so that I can get people on the western hemisphere to answer the phone? It seems that after a certain time they start speaking with an Indian accent over there.

  • "Can't install OSX 10.4.2 on this computer"

"Can't install OSX 10.4.2 on this computer" error when trying to move up to "Tiger."

    Hi,
I just purchased and received Tiger from Amazon.com via a seller that is a legit make repair biz. The disk they sent me says: Mac OS X Tiger "CPU drop in DVD" also states that the software is part of a hardware bundle. I can not install from this disk it shows up in my startup prefs as "Mac OS X upgrade DVD". Was I sold a bogus DVD? Do I have to buy another version of the install?

  • Extremely Sluggish Performance

After initially having MUCH trouble actually upgrading to Leopard, including the disabling of application enhancement software, I had to re-install using Archive and Install - I've worked with Windows and OSX for years and Leopard has been the most ill-prepared, poor quality upgrade procedure I've ever used.
Not only that, but the performance is awful on my 1.67Ghz PowerBook G4. Instead of being a step up, I've stepped down: It's much slower than Tiger, CPU usage bursting through the roof, meaning my laptop runs MUCH hotter, and much more sluggishly. Repairing permissions takes 20 minutes! What a joke!
Unless Apple can provide a solution, I'm wiping my drive and heading back to Tiger... unbelievable, it really is.

Please don't flame me for this, but I've noticed that bar one, everyone on this thread are mostly using G4's? Tiger was built on PPC architecture so it was optimised for that system. I seem to remember that the G4 powerbooks just before the went Intel had buss speeds of just 167MHz? The newer Core Duo 2 processors are now at speeds of 667MHz- quite a significant hike. So it's hardly surprising that you folks are having performance problems.
The crux of it, is that Apple want (and have) to sell computers (fair game), and I suppose also that they want you to upgrade to their faster chipsets too (and why not?- they really move!). Yes of course a PPC version of Leopard has been made available that will just work with older PPC based Macs so I suppose you can't really blame Apple for optimising Leopard for Intel chips can you?
I upgraded from a G4 500 Ti which for a good 5 or so years was a great computer with OS 9.2.2 running well and had a 'decent', if a little slow at times performance with OS X 10.3.9- but the speed was beginning to show when Tiger appeared and I had to throw away the Dashboard altogether because I then had to wait several minutes to get Dashboard working at all.
My recommendation is just to go back to Tiger for now until you can afford to upgrade to the Intel architecture. But the Intel Mac comes really recommended. These machines really do 'fly'. The screens are also so much better and brighter than those old G4 machines. Everything just works so much better.

  • Why can't I boot from the OS X DVD on my Intel iMac?

I'm trying to boot from the Mac OS X Tiger CPU Drop in DVD that came from the Apple Refurb Store with my Intel iMac.
I have tried holding down the C key on start up and it doesn't work. It boots like normal to the hard drive
I have tried using the Start up Manager, but all it can see to boot from is my installed OS X system on the hard drive and my Windows Boot Camp partition.
The CPU Drop in DVD is all that shipped with my machine. Can one even boot with it?
My problem is Photoshop Elements refuses to start up, giving me EXCBADACCESS and KERNINVALIDADDRESS alerts. It crashes every time about half way through starting up. Trashing it's preference folder doesn't fix the problem. In fact, my Preference folder keeps filling up with folders labeled with jibberish names.
I found a discussion thread that I should boot from the original disk that came with the machine and use Disk Utilities, but I can't even boot from the DVD drive.
    What step am I missing?
    TIA
    Kathryn

    Hi knittsings!
It's only possible to boot an Intel-based iMac from a grey-labeled DVD, so if you received a black-labeled DVD, someone made a mistake packaging your refurb. The correct DVDs should have been in the smaller box with the User Guide and other small, square documents, along with the mouse and remote. If you find the grey-labeled DVDs in there, just keep the drop-in DVD, they won't need it back since they make them:)
If you don't find them in there, call Apple, or log into your account on the Store page and find your order's link for customer follow-up/issues.

  • Optical drive problems after upgrade to Tiger 10.4.10

I've just had my machine updated to Tiger 10.4.10 after having two new hard drives installed after a hard drive failure. I'm now having issues with burning data for backup purposes.
I can't burn anything with Mac OS Disc Burner utility, it doesn't seem to recognize blank disc's DVD's or CD's. It keeps telling me to load a disc when one is already in the drive.
System profiler recognizes CD-R's & DVD-R's when they are in the optical drive
I can burn with Toast Titanium ver 6.0.3 DVD's & CD's. The burned CD's will mount. The burned DVD's will not mount.
I have checked the burned DVD's in the optical drive of my iBook G4 Mac OS 10.3.9 and they mount on it fine.
Movie DVD's will mount & play. Software DVD's will mount and load applications.
I have cleaned the drive with a cleaning disc.
The Optical Drive was working fine before the upgrade, so what is the problem?
I can only assume two problems now!
1.) the optical drive has a physical malfunction
2.) there is a software issue between Tiger 10.4.10 & this optical drive (this is my favorite at the moment)
The upgrade was done by an Apple Authorised Service Provider they say there are no issues with Tiger & the optical drive.
So any ideas or help would be much appreciated.

I'm having a similar problem. I bought my G5 with Panther OS on it a few years ago. The DVD drive functioned perfectly back then. Then I upgraded to Tiger this past year which caused the DVD drive to open later..that is, I'd have to hold down the eject button for a good 2 or 3 seconds before it would open or close. Previously it responded instantly. Now what happens more and more is it can't read DVD-ROM disks that it has burned. My imac G4 with Jaguar has no trouble reading the disks but Tiger 10.4.9 and 10.4.10 simply refuse to mount DVD ROM disks that it burned.
I'm trying to make a duplicate DVD of the offending disk on my single-processor G4 and then put THAT disk into the G5 so it can read the info. Hopefully that will be my work-around.
It's got to be a software issue and I keep hoping the Apple wiz kids will put out an update to remedy this. Something's fishy with the DVD drive programming.

  • Upgrading G3 350 B&W and  G4733 Quicksilver from OS 9.2.1 to 10.4 Tiger

Hello again evryone...quick question.....Is there software that will install 10.4 Tiger on the two above mentioned computers (while running OS 9.2.1), or do they have to already running OS 10.3 or a version of X in order to do the install? I have a 10.4 (gray) install/restore DVD that opens on an external DVD drive very nicely, but when I click on the (install) button, I get the following messages: "The document 'install mac os X' could not be opened because the application program that created it could not be found". (could not find translation extension with appropriate translators.) When trying to boot the G4 from the G4 install/restore disk, I get an error message "startup disk was unable to select the install CD as the startup disk" -2 (invalid queue element)
I just updated the firmware for both the G3 and the G4, and both run flawlessly on OS 9.2.1????? Can anyone please shed some light on this? I've seen a couple of comments that I have to be running 10.3 first.....will a "full install" version of 10.4 boot from OS 9?.....many thanks in advance.........

One thing you should think about is the RAM requirements for 10.4 are much more than for OS 9. You may need about 512MB RAM for a minimal system, and more is better. You can find out how much each machine has using the Apple System Profiler, or from About this Mac... more info, under the apple menu bar item.
The 350MHz G3 may be pretty sluggish in 10.4, it will run, but won't be as responsive as in OS 9 with the limited CPU, RAM, and VRAM of the original machine. The Quicksilver G4 should be able to run 10.4 fairly well with enough RAM, go for 1GB or more if you can, is the max 1.5 or 2GB in those machines?
Check out the historical articles on www.lowendmac.com for those particular machines specs and for other useful reference information and possible hardware upgrades.
When making a major OS upgrade from OS 9 to 10.4 all your peripherals (printers, etc) will require new drivers, which may or may not be available. Check the vendor support pages for the 10.4 drivers, (if the company is still in business). You may discover that upgrading the OS will render older third-party hardware you have been using inoperable on top of making the whole computer feel really underpowered. So be prepared for upgrading the hardware, and external devices, and other third-party apps that you have depended on for newer versions as well. With 10.4 some OS 9 apps will still run in the Classic emulation environment, but some will require booting into OS 9.
You can install OS 10.4 right on top of OS 9 and continue to dual-boot the machines into either. But the disc space requirements for OS X will be greater than OS 9, what size drive do you have and how much free space do you have? Those older drives were fairly slow, and since you have limited RAM capabilities the hard drive will be in continual use for virtual memory when you launch several apps and switch back and forth causing some slow downs.
If you lack the hard drive space you could possibly install 10.4 on an external FW drive and boot from that, or install an additional internal hard drive.

  • Upgrading to tiger from panther--please help me out!!!

I have a 17" imac, running on Mac OS X 10.3.9. I bought the new ipod nano, which needs Tiger at least. I went to the Apple Store, and they told me to buy Tiger online, since the Apple store doesn't carry it anymore.
So I searched ebay and Amazon and was dismayed that it was still so expensive. The Apple store customer service guy told me it would be cheap. Well, I kept my eyes peeled for a while, and finally found it available from allmac.com through Amazon for $75. It listed the system requirements, which I met.
I got it in the mail yesterday, and was shocked to see "CPU Drop in DVD" and "not to be sold separately" on the DVD. I put it in the disc drive, and it immediately was spit out. This happened repeatedly. I checked on discussion boards about this problem and found that perhaps my superdrive needed to be updated. I tried this, and it didn't need it after all.
So, today I tried inserting the disc again. Magically my computer recognized the disc. Then I opened the disc from Finder and clicked the "install" icon. A screen popped up telling me to restart my computer, which I did. The restart took a lot longer than normal, and I noticed that there was a completely gray screen that lingered for around a minute or two. Then the "finder" icon popped up in the middle of the screen, and it continued to restart as normal. No installation procedure ever appeared.
Then I thought perhaps I was doing something wrong, so I went to my Apple Store and talked to one of their technical support guys, and he told me that the DVD I bought should not have been sold, but it should still upgrade my computer just fine.
Well, I went home, tried it countless more times, all with the same result.
I'm getting really frustrated. I don't want to be out $75, and I'd really like to start using my iPod. I run long distances, and it's the only thing that keeps me going sometimes. My old iPod no longer holds charge for more than 20 minutes (even with a 10 hr battery expansion pack I purchased), which is what got me into this mess to begin with.
IF ANYONE CAN HELP ME IN ANY WAY, I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE IT!!!!!!!

    Awoz,
Not sure what kind of iPod you have, but what about trying to fix the battery instead of going through all this? Some third-party services are able to put in a fresh battery for probably less than the $75 you paid for Tiger.
You could return the Nano if you're still in the return period, or sell it on eBay, or keep it just in case. Amazon will probably let you return the DVD once you explain they weren't allowed to sell it. I've returned CD and DVD disks before, so it is possible.
Tiger is great, but you don't know what other problems you may run into once you have it installed. May be easier in the long run to fix your old iPod and keep what you have, since it appears you're happy with it and it does what you need.
    Just a thought. Good luck...

  • Upgrading to Tiger Installer problems

Ok, thanks in advance for giving a glance, and, Happiest of Holidays.
I did search and still doesn't fit my situation...
Upgrading to Tiger-retail box from OWC. I use an external partinioned 200g firewire drive as a B/U and bootable OS/software tester before installing on the Pismo. The drive has 10G space available on the bootable OS partion.
Start the Tiger DVD installer it begins and after installing Base System part 1 and moving to Running Installer Script the process stalls; doesn't crash - just stops: The FW drive stops blinking and the DVD stops spinning....
OK maybe i overlooked something etc... Have to erase the OS partition; clone 10.3.9 from the pismo to it and start again. This time do all the checks: Run disk utility, Tiger cache cleaner etc... all works well, even boot and work on the drive for a few days. Start the upgrade process again, stalls at the exact same place. I want to run Tiger on the FW drive prior to the Pismo to check it out and i don't relish the thought of having to start from scratch if problems occur installing on the Pismo....
This time i printed the log file which i include below.
I called OWC tech dept. - they said i probably don't have enough disk space for the process... the process told me it only required 3.5G. They didn't offer any further knowledge.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!
    Peace

  • No output to HDMI (but ok to VGA...) after CPU upgrade

    Hi there,
I have a very strange problem... hope you can help!
I wanted to upgrade my Mac Mini to use it as an HTPC, so I passed from 1.83Ghz CoreDuo/512Mb to 2.00Ghz Core2Duo/2Gb.
The CPU and RAM upgrade process went OK, so I tried to connect the Mini to my HDTV (TOSHIBA 37A3030D) via a DVI->HDMI cable, but the screen was blank.
I thought I had somehow damaged the digital video out of the Mini during the upgrade, so I tried to plug a 17" monitor with a VGA-VGA cable and a DVI-VGA adapter: no problem there.
Then I thought about a cable issue, but the very same cable works perfectly when I try it with my MacBook Pro, and in the same TV.
So I played a little with SwitchResX and finally resolved: after few tries and some reboots everything worked.
But then I noticed that CPU temperature was a little too high, so I decided to re-open my Mini and put a better thermal compound.
All went well, or so it seemed: in fact since this last intervention the CPU temperature went ok but I couldn't get HDMI output from my Mini any more!!
Output to VGA still works, tried with the monitor I mentioned before and with my TV's VGA input ... too bad I can't reach 1080i via VGA!.
    I tried almost everything:
    - Playing around with SwitchResX, with no luck this time...
    - Resetting PRAM and NVRAM with various methods (the little button on the motherboard, CMD-OPT-P-RE during the boot, etc... )
    - Resetting SMC
    - Resetting firmware (keeping the power button pressed when turning on the machine 'till it beeps)
    - Reinstalling Leopard
    ...no results.
The weird thing is that if I VNC to the mini I notice that the TV is correctly recognized (screenshot: http://www.matteo.ge.it/vnc_mini.jpg), and EDID data seems ok (link: http://www.matteo.ge.it/TOSHIBA-TV_macmini.txt)
Do you guys have any idea?
Thank you so much, I'm getting desperate

I tried to connect the mini to the TV just after the upgrade. After some tweaking with SwitchResX it worked. The problems began when i decided to re-open the mini to put some better termal compound over the CPU.
I agree with you, I have probably screwed up something during this operation, but I really can't say what!!! I tried both TechToolPro and the hardware tests from Tiger DVD, and all of the tests were ok...
I phoned to the Apple tech support here in italy, but they proposed me to change the entire logic board, which would cost me almost the price of a brand new machine!!
The ultimate test I want to do is to hook up my Mini to a DVI monitor with a DVI-D cable.
If it doesn't work, It is almost certain that I have damaged digital video out (even if I would like to know how I could did that!!)
