"Upgrade to USB 2.0" Help Please

I'm somewhat of a new mac user (almost fully converted) and I'm having trouble with my USB ports. I've learned that mine are 1.1 but my external drive requires 2.0. I read a few forum and learned that I could use a USB 2.0 notebook card. I ordered one and the card shows up in the bar at the top near the clock, but I still can't see my external drive. Am I doing something wrong? I should mention that the external drive I'm hoping to get to work with the Powerbook is one that is powered by the USB (no external power). To troubleshoot, I connected an old external with it's own power source and still got nothing through the new PC card...however, plugging it into one of the original USB ports worked fine.
That last part is what makes me think I'm not doing something correctly. Perhaps a mac setting that I'm not aware of. It is a Dynex DX-UC202 notebook card. I've read that people have it working with their macs so I'm not sure what to do.
Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
ps. Just thought I'd throw this out there for anyone still reading this. My ultimate goal is to have an external drive that I can share between a PC laptop and my Powerbook, one in which I can share an iTunes library. If anyone has better suggestions that what I'm trying to get to work, I'm all ears. Thanks again.

Hello bingston,
If the PowerBook that you are referring to is the 15" 1.5GHz Aluminum that you have listed, then it has 2 USB 2 ports, not USB 1.1
You should be able to power up your external drive directly from these USB ports.
The USB ports on Aluminum PowerBooks have a reduced power output, so you may need to use a double connection (most likely sent with the external hard drive enclosure if it is USB powered).
Hook it up to both USB ports directly and see if it doesn't startup your external and show it on your desktop.
I have an external USB hard drive that will startup with a single USB connection on the older Pismo & Titanium PowerBooks with 1.1, but needs a double connection to work on my Aluminum 1.25GHz with USB 2 ports because of this reduced power output.
By the way, all of the external enclosures that I have seen are actually backward compatible with USB 1.1 anyway.
As far as I know the connection with your PC Card should work automatically. Did it come with a driver installation disc? The reason that it is not working may be because your PowerBook lacks the proper drivers for it.

Now I just got a new laptop and decided to backup my iphone and also upgrade to 7.1.2.  Issue is - while the update was in progress I disconnected the cable since I was getting late for an appointment. Now when I got finally upgraded to 7.1.2, I dont see my apps and music anymore. They all seem to disappear. I cant even back up to the older date. All I see is the option to back up to the 7.1.2 version only. The only solace is I still have photos intact. Rest all data seems to be gone. Please help!!! urgent!!!

  • Lost iTunes Library after upgrading to iTunes 7.7 HELP PLEASE

I have two issues on hand : after upgrading to iTunes 7.7 I opened iTunes and all of my music was gone except for about 1,000+ songs (3.2 GB) when I originally had about 20GB worth of songs. How can I recover my full library into iTunes ?
Second issue: when importing new CDs into iTunes 7.7 it only plays a fraction of each song before moving on to another song, whereas iTunes shows that I have the full song imported.
I really appreciate someone's help here, and does the latest version of iTunes have a bug ??

Further to my last post, I find that the purchased songs have been retained in the iTunes Library of my Mac Book - is there any way iI can restore them to the iMac?

10.6 is a paid update via installation disc.  Getting there requires you look at these steps:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2455
Once you get 10.6, you can update to 10.6.8 for the latest iTunes compatibility.
This will not give you full iCloud compatibility:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2551
However, you should be careful as far as updating to 10.7 or later, because of this:

  • Verizon USB 720 - router help please!

Hope this isn't a repeat - I searched & couldn't find anything on my Modem.
I live in a rural area and use the Verizon USB 720 modem for my home PC.  I just got a Dell laptop and want to connect it to the internet via my Verizon service.  I heard I can do this with a Linksys router.  Which one do I need, and what else is required?  I don't want to pay $$$ & then find out it can't be done. Also, how far can I go with my laptop and still have an internet connection?  Any help would be appreciated.

Yes. It is possible. Technically it is an access point you'll need. But you can use a router as well. Routers are usually cheaper but more limited then the versatile Linksys WAP... devices. If you want to use a router you should check this thread.
The other alternative could be to get a wireless adapter for your desktop and create an ad-hoc wireless connection between the desktop and the laptop. Basically, your desktop would then play access point. I cannot tell how good this works. I think it should work without problems but I have never tried it myself. Moreover, you may be limited to a single wireless connection, i.e. a single ad-hoc wireless connection from the desktop at each time (in case you want to get a second laptop in the future). But I am not sure on this either.

    Hello Isabellap,
It sounds like your iPhone 4S is not charging when plugged in.  I found an article with some steps that might help with this.  I recommend reviewing the steps in the sections titled "Battery does not charge from the USB power adapter" and "Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off" in the following article:

  • X6 USB Connection failure HELP PLEASE :(

Hi all i'm new here, i've just bought a Nokia X6 16GB, and upon plugging it into the pc via usb, the device has no response, I have tried all settings on the device, e.g. pc suite, and mass storage, and ask upon connection, but when plugging the cable into the phone it doesn't respond, e.g it does not show you usb menu, to select which way to connect to the pc.
And the pc doesn't respond either, only recognizing the phone, as an unknown device, I have tried all of nokia's software, inc the pc suite setup, I have tried uninstalling all the software, and reinstalling, with no luck, my pc is one I have built myself running win xp 64bit pro. I have tried 2 other pc's running win vista 32bit, and they won't even show the phone in device manager, like my pc.
So i'm basically wanting to know what is wrong with my phone?? Is it a problem with the handset, or usb cable, or the 3 computers I have tried?
I have only just recived the handset from orange, so I can return it if it is a problem with the handset..
    Many thanks in advance, Ben.

Could be. Bring your X6 in and let them take a look.

I have a new MacBook Pro 15" and need to purchase the easiest, cost-effective USB for backup.  I have never done a backup and don't know what to buy.  Thanks much from an obvious novice.

Look at these two links to OWC products.  Note that one is for enclosures only so an appropriate HDD would have to be added.  This at least should give you an idea of what is available.

  • Hello, I have a Sony GV D300E mini DV editing deck.MY imac latest I7 model does not see it when I plug it in via firewire to usb, any help please.

My iMAC i7 will not see the device, it is from firewire to usb.
    Any help please.

The connection on the player is firewire
    You need the following:
    Apple Thunderbolt - Firewire adapter
4-pin to 9-pin Firewire cable like this one
    No software drivers are needed.
No icon will appear on your Mac desktop when the deck is connected.  You need to use video capture software such as iMovie, Final Cut, etc. in order to "see" and use your Firewire deck. (I believe QuickTime Player will also "see" your deck and allow playback.)   You will probably have to use the manual controls on the deck to control actual playback start & stop.
I have recently bought a cable, firewire one end and USB on the other
Hard to believe there is such a cable.  If there is such a cable, it's a scam.  Firewire and USB are totally different, electrically and protocol-wise.  Even if there is such a cable, it will not work for connecting your miniDV player to a Mac.   miniDV (video) has always been a Firewire-based connection. Sony calls Firewire "i.Link"

  • Can't Upgrade to USB 2.0. Help Please!

I have an K7T266 Pro Version 1.0 motherboard. Have been trying for hours to upgrade the USB port to 2.0. Have followed all instructions from the MSI website.
Even upgrqaded my BIOS to 1.9 and still can't get it to work. When I try to install the USB 2.0 driver, I get a message that says "Driver Can't Start". I have up-to-date windows XP Professional Version with Service Pack 1. According to MSI, I should be able to upgrade but it just doesn't happen.
I remember being able to upgrade to USB 2.0 when the same system was under Win 98 Second Edition but just has not worked with Win XP. This is very important as I bought an external hard drive to use for making backups under Norton Ghost.
Can anyone please help me with this? I am sure some other users out there have had the same problem.
    Thank You in advance...

I have the same problems with this.   THE KT6-Delta cd that came with my motherboard does not have the USB 2.0 drivers.  It directs you to microsoft's website to install service pack one for XP or Win 2000.  Then you can download an update from Microsoft for the USB 2.0.  Is there any way to get around installing SP1?  I currently only have access to dial up and that would take forever.  Can someone give a link to some place that would have the drivers for USB 2.0?

  • HT4623 error 4013 and 21 on my ipad 2 after the new software upgrade. ipad is not usable anymore. please help!!!

    Hello There,
please help, I have been trying to get my ipad to work again for hours without luck.
After running the new software update on my ipad 2, I started having issues; device turned off by itself, apps couldn't be downloaded, etc (however it was at least working).
Being frustrated with the newly born issues, I decided to restore the ipad, hoping that would solve the issue, however I ended up with the black screen telling me to connect to iTunes and when I connect and go for restore, I get error message 4013 and 21. I tried re-installing iTunes, upgrading my opp system, but nothing,
    Please help!!! Very annoying!!!
    Thx

You say "USB can't be the issue...".  I disagree.  There are thresholds, etc.  Maybe the iPhone passes some threshold, but the iPad does not.
You might reboot all devices.  If that does not cure it, then check the TS3694 article I attached above.

  • Broken Bonjour with Canon MF4350d after 10.6 upgrade - Help Please.

I have been using a Canon 4350d with no problems with 10.5.8 - including Printer Sharing (Bonjour). Now, after updating to 10.6 (now 10.6.2) I can still print fine, but I have lost all Printer Sharing. All settings appear to be right, and my other macs appear to be printing through the one connected via USB to the printer, but it never goes through. HELP Please. Thank you.

According to the UFR2 User Guide on page 2-8, the driver can be removed from the Mac by trashing the following folders. Note that you should delete the print queue first, by opening Print & Fax, selecting the MF model in the Printers list and pressing the minus button.
    System Volume > Library > Printers > Canon > UFR2
    System Volume > Library > Launch Agents > jp.co.canon.UFR2.BG.plist
    System Volume > Library > Printers > PPDs > Contents > Resources > en.lproj > CNTD**Z*2.ppd.gz
(where * indicates the printer model and 2 indicates the language of driver used)
With these files removed you can then empty the trash, although you may have to open Activity Monitor and stop the 'UFR II Backgrounder' service before you are able to remove all the files from the trash.
With the v2.10 driver removed you are ready to add another driver. However you need to be aware that the v1.80 driver cannot be used on 10.6. If you were using it previously then it would suggest that the 10.6 Mac was an upgrade from 10.5 rather than a clean 10.6 install. On a clean 10.6 Mac, then v1.80 driver will not operate correctly.
What you may be able to do is have the v1.80 driver installed on a Mac running Leopard and shared. You may then be able to use the v2.10 driver on the Snow Leopard Mac's to print to the Leopard share using the v1.80 driver. Note that I haven't tried this so I cannot say if this will work for you. Personally I always ensure I get a printer with Ethernet or wireless support so that I can avoid printer sharing...
