Upgrade to USB 2.0?

Is it possible to add an internal or external USB 2.0 port? I wouldn't imagine there's room internally for adding the necessary hardware given the compact domed shape of the iMac G4 flat-panel, but would there be a way to have it external, perhaps through a fire-wire port?
iMac G4 700 MHz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   15" LCD screen, 512MB SDRAM, 80 GB internal HD, 250 GB external HD, internal CD-RW, external CD/DVD-RW

Jamei,Welcome to Apple Discussions.
I regret that this is not available at this time. I have seen one USB-FW convertor but it only came with Windows drivers and was designed purely for video use.
There probably aren't enough users out there who need USB2 on their iMacs to make this a feasible product. (On a PC/PowerMac/Powerbook there are expansion cards available.)

  • Upgrade to USB 2.0 possible?

I've got an MBP 15" with two USB 1.1 ports. Is there any way to upgrade to USB 2.0?
    Thanks.

Hi Stedman and Niel and thank you both for your responses.
Maybe what is confusing me is the ports themselves. The USB ports on my MBP both are USB Type A connectors. I have two external drives that I connect using Firewire but both of which have ports labeled USB 2.0, both using USB Type B connectors. I assumed that USB 2.0 required Type B connectors. Is that wrong? Are there USB cables that have Type A and Type B on opposite ends?
This is all prompted by the USB 2.0 requirement stated for the iPhone. I'd like to get the 3G iPhone but need to be sure that my MBP will meet the phone's hardware requirements.
    Cheers,
    Michael

  • Can't Upgrade to USB 2.0. Help Please!

I have an K7T266 Pro Version 1.0 motherboard. Have been trying for hours to upgrade the USB port to 2.0. Have followed all instructions from the MSI website.
Even upgrqaded my BIOS to 1.9 and still can't get it to work. When I try to install the USB 2.0 driver, I get a message that says "Driver Can't Start". I have up-to-date windows XP Professional Version with Service Pack 1. According to MSI, I should be able to upgrade but it just doesn't happen.
I remember being able to upgrade to USB 2.0 when the same system was under Win 98 Second Edition but just has not worked with Win XP. This is very important as I bought an external hard drive to use for making backups under Norton Ghost.
Can anyone please help me with this? I am sure some other users out there have had the same problem.
    Thank You in advance...

I have the same problems with this.   THE KT6-Delta cd that came with my motherboard does not have the USB 2.0 drivers.  It directs you to microsoft's website to install service pack one for XP or Win 2000.  Then you can download an update from Microsoft for the USB 2.0.  Is there any way to get around installing SP1?  I currently only have access to dial up and that would take forever.  Can someone give a link to some place that would have the drivers for USB 2.0?

  • Can I upgrade my USB ports from 2.0 to 3.0 in my macbook pro(Late 2011)?

Im thinking about doing some upgrades and i wanted to know if it was possible to upgrade these usb ports

The only upgrades you can do are increasing the RAM and installing larger and/or faster HDD/SSD.

  • BDX2300 firmware upgrade fail (USB)

I have had mulltiple screen freezes on most Bluray discs I have tried. I see there is a firmware upgrade 1.15 to stabalize, but...
I have followed the instructions for copying the files for firmware upgrade to USB drive in Directory UPG_ALL. When I plug the USB drive into the player, I see the USB icon loading, but the player does not try to load the firmware as the instruction states:
    3)
“Insert the USB Thumb Drive with the firmware” copied to the drive into the USP port located on the front. (Note: Some models may have the USB port located behind a protective cover or on the rear of the unit)
    4)
After a few seconds the update screen will appear. The unit will automatically update the firmware in sequence as shown in Figure 1a through 1d.
If I go to Setting, system, and try to upgrade from USB, I get a messsage that the file is not found. I have verified the files are in the directory as requested.
What are the correct instructions that will allow me to update my firmware via USB?

I just successfully upgrade my brother's machine thanks to this forum:
Here is what worked for me with upgrade V1.22. after much trial and error: (Your folders will have your version in the name)
Unzip the downloaded zip file. There is a real nice PDF file that tells you exactly how to do it. THROW IT OUT!
On a clean thumb drive (don't worry about  BUDA and System Volume information) create a folder named  UPG_ALL.
When you unzip your file you will find, besides the PDF file you should dispose of, a folder named V1.22. In that folder you will find yet another folder named V1.22.
In that folder you will find some files: I had the following in mine:
    8551_linux_demo_dbg.bin
    8551_linux_demo_dbg_id.bin
    DVD.bin
    dvd_id.bin
    mt8551_bl_linux.bin
Copy those files to the UPG_ALL folder on the Thumb drive.
Now some of you may have gotten this far before, what they didn't tell us was that you can tell the player to look on the USB port.
With thumb drive inserted and the power on select the icon on the tv screen with the gears. Then select SETTINGS and  then select UPDATE.
You should now see a choice  for disk - USB - or network (or something like that)
Select USB and wallah you should have an update occur.
This last part was strictly from memory, because I couldn't interupt the movie my brother  was watching.
    I hope this helps,
    Jerry

  • Do I need to upgrade to USB 2.0?

I bought my daughter an iPod Nano 4 GB and dock for Christmas. She has a Dell PC with Windows XP, and USB 1.1 and Firewire ports. (My son uses the Firewire port for his older iPod 15GB.) The iPod Nano came with a USB 2.0 connector. When we tried connecting the iPod to the USB 1.1 port it failed because the connection was too slow. Do I need to upgrade to USB 2.0 or are there other options for connecting the iPod Nano to her PC?

There are several things that can slow down a deployment.
    1. If you use "cheap" USB 2.0 drives, you will get slow behavior.
    2. If you have a slow network (Fast Ethernet), you will get slowness.
Note that there *are* some technical problems with USB 3.0, since some USB 3.0 host controllers don't have built-in WinPE Driver support, so I typically try to avoid USB 3.0 (yes really), instead I find "fast" 8GB USB 2.0 drives to do the heavy lifting.
If you don't have access do fast USB 2.0 drives, but do have Gigabit Ethernet, I would just put the boot media (extract the contents of the
\\server\deploymentshare$\boot\LitetouchPE_x64.iso to your boot media rather than creating offline media). This method also has the advantage of working with new uEFI machines. :)

  • Is it possible to upgrade to USB 2.0?

    Hi
I've got a couple of external USB devices which would benefit me greatly if I could run them faster via USB 2.0, however I only have USB 1.
Is there any way of adding a USB 2.0 connection, for instance via a Firewire port?
Is there any way of upgrading to USB 2.0?
Forgive my ignorance in the confusing world of USB and Firewire connections!
    Cheers
    Jim

Sorry but no, it isn't. There are no slots in your eMac for adding a USB 2 card, and there are no Firewire to USB converters (such a device, if even technically possible, would undoubtedly be fairly pricey).

  • Upgrading to USB 3

I have a Pavilion a1720n desktop computer that uses Vista home premium OS. It has USB and USB2 ports. I plan to purchase a USB 3 external hard drive, thinking  that my next computer will have USB 3 capability. In the meantime, is my a1720n computer capable of being upgraded to USB 3? And if so, how easy is it to do? Norman

    Hi,
USB 3 is backward compatible with USB 2 so you may use a USB 3 external hard drive on a pc with USB 2. It will work as a USB 2 drive but because the pc doesn't support USB 3, it wouldn't work at the USB 3 speed anyway.
The best way to use USB 3 drives is to buy a USB 3 supported computer. The main thing is that the motherboard has to support it. If not (computers with USB 2 can't achieve USB 3 speed) , the drive will always work as a USB 2 one..
USB 3 connection is supported in the latest Intel Sandy Bridge or AMD A-X Fusion computers..

  • When will TC be upgraded to USB 3.0?

    Hey guys,
I've been thinking about a TC purchase ever since it came out, but never got around to buying one. Since I have a ***** router and two aging usb 2.0 external harddrives, I wanna go for it. Question is, if TC will be upgraded to USB 3.0 anytime soon, since the recent mb air and mb pro ugrades now come with 3.0? And second of all, does a TC make for a good router?
I look forward to your opinions / thoughts

    HI,
I have a HP LaserJet M5025 MFP with "Inflate Failure - Download file now - send rfu upgrade on usb dev port" error. I have tried to solve this problem.  I send the firmware using the run dialog " cmd /k copy /b C:\tmpfrm\your_firmware_filename.rfu \\your_pc_name\HPLaserJ. After that, the MFP screen appears  "unsupported file type - Code CRC error". I tried to download several different firmwares but always get the same result. Help me please to solve this problem.

This seems to be a commercial product. For the best chance at finding a solution I would suggest posting in the forum for HP Business Support!

  • Upgrading from USB 1.0 to USB 2.0 on a PC with XP

Using Presario 5420US with XP, for some dedicated purposes, with USB devices. Keep getting the message that downloads wou;ld be faster with USB 2.0 -- evidently the PC has 1.0 only.   Does upgrading to 2.0 involve a change in hardware? are host controllers hardware devices (chips on motherboard) or software drivers? Or both?  I have been trying to research this, and have read dozens of items on many websites -- and still have not come up with the answer.... Can that XP computer be upgraded (by me)?
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi:
You posted in the notebook forum.  The model number indicates you have a desktop PC, correct?
If so, you need a PCI card with USB 2.0 ports. According to the PC specs for your machine, you have one free PCI slot with which to install such a card.
Below is a link to a website that sells these adapters.  You can read the feedback and get the model that most suits your needs.
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100006519&IsNodeId=1&Description=PCI%20t...
The card should come with drivers. If it doesn't that means it should automatically be detected and installed.
Make sure you get one that states it works with XP.

  • Upgrading to USB 2.0

I bought a 1.4Mhz Mac Mini last Christmas without realizing that it only has USB 1.25 ports. I received an Video iPod for X-Mas and would enjoy a USB 2.0 port or 6.
There is an physical Apple Store in Richmond, VA, about an hour's drive from me. Can I or they upgrade my ports, or are they married to the systemboard like most modern PCs?

Thanks. The problem must be that my Belkin KVM must be the hang point then. I have a USB 2.0 hub hooked to the mini through it, and am only getting 12 Mb speeds.

  • Upgrading to USB 2

I've got a Mac G-4 PC, 450 MHZ and upgraded the software to the latest Tiger 10.4.
I purchased an ADS USB Turbo 2.0 PCI which is Mac compatible. I installed the the card in the slot, loaded the software but the card's not working. Do I need to update the firmware in a hardware update from Apple? Also, the CD for the USB 2.0 has a number of folders with drivers for many operating systems which is also confusing.
    Please help.

Does Apple System Profiler detect the card? Sometimes with new hardware it helps to reset the PMU, and I assume you've restarted the computer.

Does the CD have Apple drivers? I've installed two or three USB cards in various computers but only one came with any of its own software and even then I'm not sure it was essential.

  • Upgraded to USB 2.0 with pci card...works 1 out of 10 times????

    Hi,
Anyone having this problem? I installed a pci card with usb 2.0
The high-speed bus is recognized in my "about this mac". However, if I hook up my ipod or any device for that matter, it doesn't recognize it. Do I just need to wait longer? When I first installed the car I did have it connect a few times. But it's very inconsistent. I'm running 10.3.9 and I'm about to upgrade to 10.4. Might this help?
    Thanks in advance

What brand/model card did you install. Not all USB 2.0 PCI cards work in a Mac. Your best bet is any card with a NEC PD720100 or PD720101 chipset (xlr8yourmac results recommend the same). Read this for more feedback: http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/firewire/fwusb_card_deepsleep.html
Stick with the NEC chip, and try NOT to use drivers, OS X doesn't need the drivers.
