Upgrade to Win 2012 R2 + Exchange 2013

I have server (Windows 2008 R2) work as domain controller and contain exchange 2007 on it .
I need upgrade both windows from 2008 R2 to 2012 R2 and exchange from 2007 to 2013.
which one should I start to upgrade first in same server windows or exchange.

In order to upgrade your domain controller first you will have to perform exchange 2007 to exchange 2013 upgrade on another server which is called as transition.
Check this links
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa996719(v=exchg.150).aspx
After you complete finish the transition tested successfully you will have to remove the exchange 2007 from you domain controller.
Removing Exchange 2007
http://msexchangeguru.com/2013/09/01/e20102007decomposte2013mig/
Once removed then you can start with the In place upgrade of Server 2008 R2 Domain controller.
Note: Usually we dont do an in place upgrade since it can be dangerous. We make an additional domain controller transfer all fsmo from Windows server 2008 r2 to 2012 then remove the active directory from Windows server 2008 r2 then decommission.

One of our clients has running Windows Essential 2012, SQL and exchange 2007 as VM on VMware for 4 years without major issue. However, the physical server is getting old and have some hardware issues recently. They have budgets to buy two Dell servers, EqualLogic

  • Server 2012 and Exchange 2013 Migration from SBS 2011

Server UpgradeI'm migrating an SBS 2011 server to a new machine with Server 2012 R2 and a Hyper-V server running Exchange 2013. I've set up the new machine, all is running well in a test environment. I now want to migrate the old server to new. These are the steps I'm going to take and I wanted advice for any modifications or errors. 1. Demote DC on Server 2012 that I set up to test. 2. Join new Server 2012 to existing SBS 2011 domain. 3. Promote Server 2012 to DC. 4. Join the Hyper-V Server 2012 to the Server 2012 domain.5. Migrate Exchange 2010 on the SBS 2011 Server to Exchange 2013. 6. Transfer FSMO role from SBS 2011 Server to Server 2012 DC. I'll copy shared data files using robocopy. The only things I'm not sure about is the FSMO order, when to do that and the fact that I already have Exchange 2013 installed in the test...

I recently acquired a SuperMicro chassis that has a SAS2 expander backplane. It has SFF-8087 ports on it.http://www.supermicro.com/manuals/other/BPN-SAS2-846EL.pdfI made a post on another forum and someone mentioned that the card couldn't be used with that backplane since it's a SATA controller, however, the backplane is both SAS and SATA device compliant, it's only the RAID controller, as far as I know, that is a "SATA II" controller, and not a SAS controller. So, I couldn't find anything in the official documentation of this controller on whether or not it was able to control SAS devices. The card itself has a 3 SFF-8087 ports though, couldn't this theoretically still be used with a SFF-8087 to SFF-8087 cable(seen below)since the backplane is a SAS/SATA backplane?...

    Hello all,
I hope that you are well!
I have an issue that I can't explain for the moment, maybe someone can help me.
Actually we have SCCM 2012 SP1 and Exchange 2013 Enterprise in our LAN.
Now I did the configuration within SCCM of creating a new Exchange Server Connectors, everything seem's to be okay, no warning, no active alert, the Exchange server connection account and so on..
But I can't see the mobile devices from my user into the All Mobile Devices within SCCM 2012.
Do I miss something into this specific configuration, certificate or something related !

  • Multiple owa sites on a single server 2012 with exchange 2013 (mailbox, cas)

    hi,
    I'm trying to
set up an exchange server 2013 on windows 2012 with all roles installed for 2 owa virtual directory, one for integrated windows authentication and the other for forms-based authentication.
    I followed a tutorial for exchange 2010.
    http://technicaljeditrials.info/2011/02/28/exchange-2010-multiple-owaecp-directories-part-1/
    Step 1: IP Address
Obtain a second IP address and add it to the NIC of your server.
    Step 2: DNS
Add a DNS entry for That secondary IP address for the name we will want to use in the new FBA OWA Web site.
    I have chosen "testwebmail."
Be sure there is a valid SSL certificate (recommended to have UC or SAN
SSL certs) on the server Which has the new name "testwebmail" that will be used in the certificate.
    Step 3: New Web Site
Create a new web site in IIS on the Client Access Server and bind it to the new IP address used in step 1.
Step 4: Adding Exchange Virtual Directories
The web site has been created and bound to the secondary IP address of our server.
Also the DNS record That will be used to access the OWA FBA new page was added to DNS.
The next step is to go into EMS and begin adding our virtual directories for OWA and ECP.
Login to the Exchange server and open the Exchange Management Shell.
Then run Get-Get-OWAVirtualDirectory and ECPVirtualDirectory to see the default OWA and ECP directories.
    New-OWAVirtualDirectory -WebSiteName FBA -InternalUrl https://testwebmail.mylab.ad/owa
    New-ECPVirtualDirectory -WebSiteName FBA -InternalUrl https://testwebmail.mylab.ad/ecp
Step 5: Configure the Virtual Directories
To configure the virtual directories we will disable FBA on the Default Web Site OWA and ECP virtual directories
Set-OWAVirtualDirectory -Identity "OWA (Default Web Site)" -WindowsAuthentication
    $true -BasicAuthentication $false  -FormsBasedAuthentication $false
Set-ECPVirtualDirectory -Identity "ECP (Default Web Site)"
    -WindowsAuthentication $true -BasicAuthentication $false  -FormsBasedAuthentication
    $false
    Step 6: iisreset
now if I access the default site I log in with
windows integrated authentication, but when I try to access the second site with forms authentication tells me username or password incorrect
Tell me you know where I'm wrong?
    thanks
    Greetings
    Daniele

    Hello,
    Something like this:
    New-OWAVirtualDirectory -WebSiteName "FBA"
Enable the Basic authentication via running the following command:
    Set-OWAVirtualDirectory -Identity "yourservername\owa (FBA)" -BasicAuthentication $true
Restart the IIS admin service in services.msc
    Thanks,

    To use
right policy templates with OWA, Outlook and Moblie Phone ,a CAL is required
    or not ?

AFAIK, You just need a standard Windows CALs to use ADRMS.

  • Migrate to Windows 2012 R2 and Exchange 2013 SP1 using database portability

Hi, I'm planning to migrate from Exchange 2013 SP1 running on Windows 2012 to Exchange 2013 SP1 on Windows 2012 R2.
Is it possible to use database portability to move the databases from the exchange installation on win 2012 to the new installation on Win 2012 R2? This would save a great deal of time not doing the mailbox moves.
I've searched similar cases but couldn't find any, all speak about disaster recovery and database portability but I've found no articles that uses the migration scenario.
Would it be possible to do and if so, what would the steps be? Do I need to delete the database from the source server, move the database files to the new server and mount them and relocate the mailboxes? Or should I dismount the database on the source server,
move them to the new server and mount them and relocate the mailboxes?
    Frank.

    Hi,
According to your description, I recommend you consider using DAG to achieve your requirement.
The following steps for your reference:
1.Prepare a new server which installed windows 2012 R2 for Exchange 2013 mailbox server.
2.After you deploy Exchange 2013 Mailbox servers, you can create a DAG, add Mailbox servers to the DAG, and then replicate mailbox databases between the DAG members.
3.After replication, you can mount all the databases on the new server.
    Hope this helps!
    Thanks.

This no way a resolution. This won't work at all as Both OS will be different and you can't form the Cluster.
    Please Unmark it!

  • Exchange 2013 Windows Server 2012 NLB and DAG on the same server

Hi all, I am installing Exchange 2013 infrastructure with two servers.
Both servers have the CAS and Mailbox roles.
For mounting on High Availability, will create a DAG.
Client Access I have no external Network Load Balancer.
I thought about installing the NLB servers in the DAG members, this could not be done before.
I do not know if in Windows Server 2012 and Exchange 2013
Can I install NLB on members of a DAG?
    regards
Microsoft Certified IT Professional Server Administrator

    Hi,
I’m afraid that WNLB and DAG cannot coexist in the same server. Because WNLB is incompatible with Windows failover clustering. If we're using an Exchange 2010 DAG and we want to use WNLB, we need to have the Client Access server role and the Mailbox server
    role running on separate servers.

  • Outlook 2010 prompting for password each login to Exchange 2013

We have a new member server w/ Windows Server 2012 and Exchange 2013.  User's mailboxes were migrated from an old Windows Server 2003 server w/ Exchange 2003 by creating new empty mailboxes in Exchange 2013 then we exported/imported
.pst files instead of migrating exchange stores.  Every time any users opens Outlook, they are being prompted to log in with domain credentials.  Obviously I'm clicking on "Remember my password", too. The workstations are all
using Outlook 2010 and on a mix of Windows XP SP3, Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 (terminal server with Outlook 2010 installed for remote users). Some users were using Outlook 2010 prior to the migration to Exchange 2013 and some were on Outlook
2007 but upgraded to Outlook 2010. I'm almost to the point of telling the users it's a new "feature" of Exchange 2013.  I'm confident that it's not stored passwords or credentials on the workstations, I've removed, deleted, created and
recreated those credentials.  I've changed domain passwords and that didn't help either.  Any hints, tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi
These settings can be found under your Outlook profile, "More Settings > Connection > Exchange Proxy Settings."
If you have Outlook Anywhere enabled, then you should force all Outlook clients to use HTTP when connecting.  Ensure you have  "On fast networks, connect using HTTP..."  AND "On slow networks, connect using HTTP...".  If you
don't, anytime you dock, undock, get a new IP address, refresh your IP address, go to sleep, idle, anything that causes your IP stack wants to renegotiate connective will cause a password prompt to appear, EVERYTIME.

  • SBS2008: Move email from Exchange 2007 to new server with Exchange 2013

We have an old server (SBS2008) and plan to buy a new server with (Server 2012). I need to move all the exchange emails, contacts & calendars to the new server. We will no longer use the old server.
Is there a document or migration tool that will help me understand how to move this data form the old exchange server to the new one?
    Old Server:
    SBS2008 running Exchange 2007
    New Server:
    Server 2012
    Exchange 2013
    Any help is appreciated!

    Hi Dave,
It can be done, and as Larry suggested you will consider two Server 2012 installs in order to achieve an environment that looks like your current SBS roles; Exchange 2013 on an Active Directory controller isn't a good long-term solution (SBS did this for
    you in the past).
For your size operation, a virtual server host, with a Windows Server 2012 license, and two virtual machines would probably be a suitable design model.  In this manner, you have Server 2012 license that permits 1 +2 licenses (one host for virtualization,
up to 2 Virtual Machines on same host).
There's no migration tool. That comes with experience and usually trial and error. You earn the skills in this migration path, and for the average SBS support person you should plan on spending 3x (or more) your efforts estimate in hours planning your migration.
You can find a recommended migration path at this link to give you an idea of the steps, but its not exactly point by point going to cover you off for an sbs2008 to server 2012 w/exchange 2013 migration.  But the high points are in here. If it looks
like something you would be comfortable with then you should research more.
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/infratalks/archive/2012/09/07/transition-from-small-business-server-to-standard-windows-server.aspx
Specific around integrating Exchange 2013 into an Exchange 2007 environment, guidance for that can be found here:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj898582(v=exchg.150).aspx
If that looks like something beyond your comfort level, then you might consider building a new 2012 server with Exchange 2013 environment out as new, manually export your exchange 2007 mailbox contents (to PST) and then import them into the new mail server,
and migrate your workstations out of old domain into new domain.  Whether this is more or less work at your workstation count is dependent upon a lot of variables.
If you have more questions about the process, update the thread and we'll try to assist.
Hopefully this info answered your original question.

  • Exchange 2013 Mail Receiving Issues

    Hi everybody,
Yesterday I configured a new DC and Exchange on Hyper-V (Server 2012 and Exchange 2013)
All functions and rolls are configured and installed but i am having issues receiving external e-mails.
Almost all of the external mails are being deliverd a half hour to a hour after being sent.
To start of on the first level.
I got a Siemens Fiber modem with an external address connected to the WAN of my Draytek 2995 router.
Alle the needed ports are forwarded to the Draytek (80,443,25,1723).
The Draytek DHCP function is set to off.
    192.168.168.2  (DC) -> 80 (HTTP IIS)
    192.168.168.2 (DC) -> 1723 (RRAS)
    192.168.168.3 (Exchange) -> 25 (SMTP)
    192.168.168.3 (Exchange) -> 443 (SSL)
My Draytek router is connected through LAN1 to a HP switch (unmanaged).
The physical server has 3 NIC's, all of these are connected to the HP Switch
I Disabled Hyper-V Queuing on the NIC's because this causes an issue with slow network connections.
The network has been configured as following.
I configured the Server 2012 R2 on the hardware(physical server) with only the Hyper-V roll.
NIC1is setup for the physical server,
    IP Address: 192.168.168.1
    Subnet: 255.255.255.0
    Gateway: 192.168.168.254 (Draytek address)
    DNS: 192.168.168.254 (Draytek address)
The Server software firewall has been set to a private network through the local security policy.
    I have setup 2 VM's through the Hyper-V roll.
The first VM is the Server 2012 R2 Domain controller.
For this VM I created a virtual switch connected to my second NIC(2).
I unchecked the box where my host can communicate with the NIC(2).
The DC has been configured as following:
    Hostname: SERVER
    IP Address: 192.168.168.2
    Subnet: 255.255.255.0
    Gateway: 192.168.168.254
    DNS: 127.0.0.1
I can ping to all the adresses from this server (internal and external).
The server has been promoted to domain controller with the following rolls.
ActiveDirectory, Certificate Autohority, DHCP, DNS, RRAS, RDP.
Alle these rolls have been set and working. (all have been tested)
DHCP has all options configured (scope, router-192.168.168.254, dns-192.168.168.2)
A DNS simple and recursive test work fine.
I did no configuration on the DNS after the DC PROMO.
So i created users in the AD.
After that I created a second VM, this one is used for the Exchange.
I setup a second virtual switch connected to NIC3 and installed Server 2012 R2 with the following config.
    Hostname: SERVER
    IP Address: 192.168.168.3
    Subnet: 255.255.255.0
    Gateway: 192.168.168.254
DNS: 192.168.168.2 (pointing to the DC)
I joined this server to the domain, everything is working fine.
Both servers have internet and network.
Running portscans on 1723 and 80 all work like a charm.
No its time to install Exchange.
I ran all the prerequisits and PowerShell commands (IAcceptLicense. etc.)
Installed de needed API and filters.
Installed Frameworks 3.5 on both servers.
And the Exchange installation was succesfull.
    CU3 is also installed.
I configured the send connector, accepted domains etc.
Created all needed certificates (self signed)
Did a portscan on 433 and 25 and they work.
All the hosting records are set mail.domain.nl etc. and MX records.
I created inboxes for the users and was able to connect them to the users in the Active Directory on the DC without any problems.
Connecting through the internet to OWA works perfect and i can login with users.
Sending e-mail internally works perfect, the messages are being deliverd in an instant.
Sending e-mail externally also works perfect, i receive mails in a few seconds on a person email address.
But when i reply or send e-mail to my new Exchange it can take up to hours to receive the mails!
I did online SMTP checks and e-mail checks, the all come out like it should.
One message from MX TOOLBOX on the SMTP:
    SMTP Transaction Time
8.408 seconds - Not good! on Transaction Time
I have nog other receive connectors setup, just the standard connectors.
So i got into the Exchange ECP and under "server" i setup the DNS to listen to 192.168.168.2 (DC).
I've read that when this is set to all ip addresses it can cause mail delay, but no luck.
I ran the best practices analyzer and get about 23 errors and 20 warnings.
A lot of services are unhealt like the "ExchangeTransport).
I have no idea what is causing the issues and read almost every forum.
Does anyone have a clue what is going on?
Did i miss something, is there a misconfiguration?
    Best regards,
    Tim

The mailserver did not receive any e-mails in this timespan, it was not an issue with the connector to the user mailboxes.
The internal e-mail also works flawless.
The entire Exchange server just not received this mail in time.
I sent an e-mail from my personal accout with the option in my outlook to receive a delivery-reply.
I got the reply as soon as the mail was deliverd, this took about a half hour to a hour.
After you asked me about the firewall, i got a hunch..
It had to be on the incomming connection, so i checked every single firewall on the network and disabled them.
    Still the same problem...
But there was still one ethernet device that could have a firewall, the internet modem!
This ATM modem receives multiple external IP's from the ISP, so I figured there was no firewall on this device. (Just like all the cable modems that are deliverd in our area by Ziggo(ISP).
But I was wrong, there was a firewall enabled on the modem!
All the ports in the modem had been forwarded but somehow the modem-firewall filtered the traffic,
creating the issue on the incomming e-mail.
I disabled the firewall and all the external e-mails are being received in an instant!
Re-enabled all the software firewalls on the servers and re-enabled the malware filter through powershell, after these steps I did another test, and everything still works like a charm!
Many thanks for your help Kjartan!

  • Exchange 2013, multiple IIS OWA sites with different authentication

    Hi
I have an exchange 2013 server with Client Access and Mailbox server installed. The server has an second ip address which I have bound an additional IIS site to. The additional IIS site is named ExchangeExternalFBA.
The default web site is configured for basic and windows authentication with:
Set-EcpVirtualDirectory -identity "ecp (default web site)" -FormsAuthentication:$false
    Set-owavirtualdirectory -identity "owa (Default Web Site)" -FormsAuthentication:$false -WindowsAuthentication:$true -BasicAuthentication:$true
Then a new ECP and OWA are configured with:
    New-ecpVirtualDirectory -WebSiteName "ExchangeExternalFBA"
    New-OwaVirtualDirectory -WebSiteName "ExchangeExternalFBA"
    Set-owavirtualdirectory -identity "owa (ExchangeExternalFBA)" -LogonFormat FullDomain -FormsAuthentication:$true -WindowsAuthentication:$false -BasicAuthentication:$true
    Set-EcpVirtualDirectory -identity "ecp (ExchangeExternalFBA)" -FormsAuthentication:$true
    Then I perform an iisreset.
My problem is that then when I try to access the ECP or OWA on the default website, it loads forms authentication! The ECP or OWA on the ExchangeExternalFBA web site works correctly and also loads forms authentication.
    If I run...
    get-owavirtualdirectory "owa (ExchangeExternalFBA)"
    then it returns:
    InternalAuthenticationMethods                       : {Basic, Ntlm,
                                                          WindowsIntegrated}
    BasicAuthentication                                 : True
    WindowsAuthentication                               : True
    DigestAuthentication                                : False
    FormsAuthentication                                 : False
    LiveIdAuthentication                                : False
    AdfsAuthentication                                  : False
    OAuthAuthentication                                 : False
    If I then run
Set-EcpVirtualDirectory -identity "ecp (default web site)" -FormsAuthentication:$false
    Set-owavirtualdirectory -identity "owa (Default Web Site)" -FormsAuthentication:$false -WindowsAuthentication:$true -BasicAuthentication:$true
and perform another iisreset then when I try to access the ECP or OWA on the default website it loads correctly. But then the forms based authentication on the ExchangeExternalFBA website can no longer log in, it does not accept the user name and password.
If I then disable and enable FBA on the ExchangeExternalFBA website then it works but forms based authentication takes over the default web site again!
Whether I perform the above from the gui or from powershell it does not make a difference, the same behaviour is observed. Changing the logontype on the FBA does not make a difference.
This has been tested on exchange 2013 cu1 and cu2.
Similar(if not identical until they get sidetracked) issue reported in http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/exchange/en-US/9fcd360f-6658-4940-add7-2f13265cf86b/multiple-owa-sites-on-a-single-server-2012-with-exchange-2013-mailbox-cas.
This worked fine in outlook 2007 and 2010, why now do my virtual directories break each other?
I can reproduce the issue on a test exchange 2013 I built in dev.
Is this a bug or are you no longer meant to host different forms of authentication on a single cas?
I'm mostly interested to see if this works for other people and why it no longer seems to work in 2013, so please no questions; 'why do you want 2 different forms of authentication'.
    Much appreciated, Thanks!

Based off of your feedback I have run the following:
    Remove-OwaVirtualDirectory "owa (ExchangeExternalFBA)"
    Remove-EcpVirtualDirectory "ecp (ExchangeExternalFBA)"
    iisreset
Set-EcpVirtualDirectory -identity "ecp (default web site)" -FormsAuthentication:$false
    Set-owavirtualdirectory -identity "owa (Default Web Site)" -FormsAuthentication:$false -WindowsAuthentication:$true -BasicAuthentication:$true
    New-ecpVirtualDirectory -WebSiteName "ExchangeExternalFBA" -Role ClientAccess
    New-OwaVirtualDirectory -WebSiteName "ExchangeExternalFBA" -Role ClientAccess
    Set-owavirtualdirectory -identity "owa (ExchangeExternalFBA)" -LogonFormat FullDomain -FormsAuthentication:$true -WindowsAuthentication:$false -BasicAuthentication:$true
    Set-EcpVirtualDirectory -identity "ecp (ExchangeExternalFBA)" -FormsAuthentication:$true
    iisreset
After this there has been no change in behaviour. After the iisreset, forms have again hijacked the default web site and re-setting the authentication on the default web site removes the forms but breaks the ability to sign in to the forms based page on the
    ExchangeExternalFBA web site again.
Note. '-Role Frontend' did not work. It showed the error:
Cannot process argument transformation on parameter 'Role'. Cannot convertvalue "frontend" to type
    "Microsoft.Exchange.Management.SystemConfigurationTasks.VirtualDirectoryRole".
Error: "Unable to match the identifier name frontend to a valid enumerator name.  Specify one of the following enumerator names and try again:
    ClientAccess, Mailbox"
        + CategoryInfo          : InvalidData: (:) [New-OwaVirtualDirectory], ParameterBindin...mationException
        + FullyQualifiedErrorId : ParameterArgumentTransformationError,New-OwaVirtualDirectory
Running get-help New-OwaVirtualDirectory -detailed shows the correct usage would be '-Role ClientAccess'?
        -Role <ClientAccess | Mailbox>
The Role parameter specifies the configuration that should be used
when the virtual directory is created. The following are the values
that can be used with this parameter:
            * FrontEnd Configures the virtual directory for use on a Client Access
              server.
            * BackEnd Configures the virtual directory for use on a Mailbox server.

  • Exchange 2013 MBX in DAG along with Hyper-V and Failover Cluster

Hi Guys! I've tried to find out an answer of my question or some kind of solution, but with no luck that's why I am writing here. The case is as follows. I have two powerful server boxes and iSCSI storage and I have to design high availability
solution, which includes SCOM 2012, SC DPM 2012 and exchange 2013 (two CAS+HUB servers and two MBX servers).
Let me tell you how I plan to do that and you will correct me if proposed solution is wrong.
    1. On both hosts - add Hyper-V role.
    2. On both hosts - add failover clustering role.
    3. Create 2 VMs through failover cluster manager, VMs will be stored on a iSCSI LUN, the first one VM for SCOM 2012 and the second one for SCDPM 2012. Both VMs will be added as failover resource.
    4. Create 4 VMs - 2 for CAS+HUB role and 2 for MBX role, VMs will be stored on a iSCSI LUN as well.
    5. Create a DAG within the two MBX servers.
In general, that's all. What I wonder is whether I can use failover clustering to acheive High Availability for 2 VMs and at the same time to create DAG between MBX-servers and NLB between CAS-servers?
Excuse me for this question, but I am not proficient in this matter.

    Hi,
As far as I know, it’s supported to create DAG for mailbox server installed in hyper-v server.
And since load balance has been changed for CAS 2013, it is more worth with DNS round robin instead of NLB. However, you can use NLB in Exchange 2013.
For more information, you can refer to the following article:

  • Applying CU4 for Exchange 2013 SP1 in a mixed 2010 / 2013 Environment

We're planning to apply Exchange 2013 SP1 CU in our mixed 2010 / 2013 environment. We'd also like to apply Exchange 2010 SP3 Rollup 5 as well. Are there any gotchas or best practices on what update to apply first?
    Orange County District Attorney

We are planning to update our 2013 from CU5 to CU8
    and 2010 SP3 to Rollup 9
I cant find any official documentation from MS concerning the upgrade path. Example.
Exchange 2013 first, then 2010. Like the above post outline.
I see 2010 being upgraded first thus bring version numbers closer together, reducing incompatibilities.
Do you still feel this is the appropriate install procedure?
    Have you done this?
