Upgrade to Windows Server 2008 R2

Our SAP systems are currently running Windows Server 2003 R2 with SQL server 2005. Microsoft currently has a newer version of Windows Server 2008 R2 and SQL 2008 in release. Seeing that Windows has a newer OS out for release, would it be recommended that we upgrade our servers to the newer OS and SQL versions?

This is a matter of installing the new software and "upgrading" the database, easy. You can check the upgrade guides at
http://service.sap.com/instguides
--> Database upgrades
Make sure you have the the necessary support package in the system to run SQL Server 2008. I would even go for SQL 2008 R2 which has a better compression, so you'll save space on your harddisk and fewer reads --> faster.

    Hi,
Generally such kind of issues are caused by third party programs such as CD burning programs, device driver etc.
First please refer to this article to see if there is anything helpful:
Guide for Upgrading to Windows Server 2008 R2
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff972408(v=ws.10).aspx
Meanwhile from the description, it mentioned a file under  C:\Windows\winsxs. Check the permission of the folder amd64_microsoft-windows-servicingstack_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6002.18005_none_676975d87cc9b6e6 and the file wcp.dll to see if the permission
and ownership are correct compare with the other folders.
Also as it provided 2 minidump files, you will need to use WinDBG to read the minidump files and see if there is any further information.

  • Upgrade to Windows Server 2008 installation fails (reports Services to uninstall but they are not installed)

    I am upgrading a Windows Server 2003 to 2008.
When I run the install it completes the Compability check and reports that Sharepoint Services and WSUS are installed. They are not installed and are not running Services either. I have attempted to remove Registry keys for these but this does not resolve
    my issue.
Control Panel, Add/Remove does not report these as installed either.
How do I get the 2008 install to continue and ignore these OR how do I "truly" get these "uninstalled" if there is nothing I can do to find out what is reporting that they are installed?

SBS 2003 does contain these feature by default. Is this a small business server OS?  If so I'd try them over here.

    Hi Arvind,
Since I'm not a license expert, for the OEM license issue, I would like to recommend you can connect the vendor.
In addition, I found a similar discussion of upgrading with OEM licnese for your reference:

  • Post upgrade from Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 to Windows Server 2012 R2

Hi, I'm not sure if I've done something wrong or if i lack some steps.
We have an existing server having Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 as OS, DC, and DNS. I had to upgrade it based on global standards so I upgraded it into Windows Server 2012 R2.
What I did was an online upgrade, insert the DVD installation disc and it asked for a adprep for forest and domain.
I did both forest and domain adprep and installation continued. After reboot, it showed up errors on my local server. Please see image below:
and when i clicked each roles under Manageability, it shows me
Is there something I need to do to fix these red marks?
    Regards,
    Jeff

These are the logs i've seen inside Custom Views>Server Roles>AD DS, DNS Server, and Administrative Events respectively.

  • Upgrade from Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 to Windows Server 2012 R2

Hi, I was trying to setup a new DC for our company, originally it's DC is Windows Server 2003 SP2, we decided not tomigrate it and instead build a new one from scratch which is Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1. I was able to set it up, perform windows updates,
added roles, perform Domains and Trusts, etc
When suddenly our global standards shifted to Windows Server 2012 R2, so instead of creating another server from scratch, this is the time to upgrade from 2k8 to 2K12 R2, besides the MAPtool which I've downloaded to check for prerequisites, etc, are there
other things I need to be aware of? backups? etc.
    Regards,
    Jeff

  • Upgrade for Windows Server 2008 R2 to Windows Server 2012 R2

    Hi Guys,
I am having an issue with upgrading one of our Servers. When I try to upgrade the Server it starts the process perfectly fine without any issues, it reboots and displays the Windows Server 2012 R2 Logo and then I get a black screen and it hangs. I waited
around 5 hours today before rebooting the Server and letting it rollback the changes that setup had made.
    Original Server Setup
    OS: Windows Server 2008 R2
Other Applications: MS SQL Server 2012 with SP2
    Removed Applications: Symantec Backup Agen
    Hardware: Virtual Server ESXi 5.0
I have upgraded other servers without any issues but they haven't had SQL Server installed on them, so I am guessing that this is the issue but SQL Server 2012 sp2 is Supported by Windows Server 2012 R2. Does anyone have any suggestions?
    Kind Regards,
    Thomas

    Hi All,
Yes we are running ESXi 5 U 2 I am looking at how much of a pain this will be to build a new VM for this database server, as it contains our Citrix database which we have had issues with in the past. I might end up just leaving this server for the moment
and move onto another server and hopefully not have any more issues.
Thank you all for your suggestions to resolving this issue.
    Kind Regards,

  • Hard drive upgrade on Windows Server 2008

I have 2 servers with similar issues.  One is an HP Proliant DL380 G7 with 4 72GB hard drives running RAID5.  I replaced each drive, one at a time, with 146 GB hard drive.  I ran HP's Array Configuration Utility which showed the correct
new volume size after the array was rebuilt and parity re-initialized.  When looking at the drive in Computer, it shows the old size.  How can I get Windows Server 2008 to recognize the new size for the logical drive?  I have a similar issue
with another DL380 G7.  This one has 2 mirrored 72GB drives that I replaced one at a time with 300 GB drives.  The HP Array Configuration Utility sees the new size but, Windows does not.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    This one may help.

  • Upgrade from Windows Server 2003 to 2008

    Hi Experts,
We are currently running SAP BPC v 7.0 for Microsoft in a Windows Server 2003 environment. This is not a production application right now as we are doing discovery work in SAP BPC 7.0. For another project, we need to upgrade to windows server 2008.
We are trying to figure out if the SAP BPC will still work after the upgrade. I know SAP BPC is compatible with Server 2008, but do we need to start of a fresh installation or the upgrade will work. We are trying to figure out if we should plan some time to reinstall SAP BPC and re-do the work we have done in BPC once it has been upgraded.
    Thanks a lot!
    Martin

At this point, BPC 7.0 for Microsoft is not certified for Windows 2008.  So, if you prepare and execute the upgrade to the server OS, support may not assist if you find any issues.  We plan to be certified on Windows 2008 with the next release of 7.5 for BPC.
    Hope this helps.

  • Is this a bug in Windows Server 2008's SetJob function?

This shows an apparent error in the implementation of SetJob on Windows Server 2008.
This is the source code for a simple NT RPC Service that can change the owner of its print jobs, from any account, on all Windows NT Operating Systems, EXCEPT Windows Server 2008.
On Windows Server 2008 the SetJob call only changes the Owner of the Print Job, if the service is run from the SYSTEM account.  SetJob does NOT return an error indicating that it was unable to change the Owner of the Print Job, it just doesn't change the Owner.
There doesn't appear to be a published work around to enable changing the Owner of the Service's Print Jobs, on Windows Server 2008, for Services that are NOT running under the SYSTEM account.
It appears that a Hot Fix was released for the same (or related) problem for Terminal Services and changing the Owner of a Print Job from Services on Windows 2008 (KB 958741).  This Hot Fix did not correct this SetJob Owner problem.
This is a link to my home HTTP Server...

I've been asking about this, on the MSDN and TechNet forums for over a month.  And in every case the replies have always been, ask in this other forum...  When I respond that I have already asked in the other forum, I never receive another response...
In the big scheme, we aren't a big company, we have been selling this product since 1995.  We have several thousand installations, a few of them have tens of thousands of users.  Most all of our larger sites are holding off on upgrading to Windows Server 2008, until we find a solution to this problem, that doesn't involve having to retrain their users.  Needless to say, we are getting more than a little heat about this...

Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 (Beta) contains the fix for changing the ownership of a print job from a service that isn't running from the System account.  I don't see it listed in the Excel Spreadsheet that lists the individual issues addressed.
This does not do anything to help 32 bit Windows Server 2008 users. But it does get rid of the problem for 64 bit Windows Server 2008 R2 users.
And only 17 months after I initially reported it...

If you deploy a VM from a VHD, the same customization assumptions are not at play.  Which is why it succeeds.  (there is no template in this case, there is also no requirement that the OS in the VHD be sysprep'd).
SCVMM has rules.  And lots of things don't make sense until you begin to understand them and play within them. (I am not saying that the SCVMM rules are a good thing, just saying they exist)

  • Do we need CALS for windows server 2008 R2 and 2012 R2 if 2008 R2 is just a stepping stone?

We currently have a server on Windows Server 2008 RC SP2 64-bit with approximately 20 clients.
We want to upgrade to Windows server 2012 R2 but first need to upgrade to Windows 2008 R2 to allow us to do a straight upgrade.
Is it possible to upgrade to Windows Server 2008 R2 with the 5 CAL's included and then upgradeto 2012 R2 and install 20 new CAL's and keep all users accounts and domain PC's the same?

Ok sorry for using the wrong terminology... I was under the impression for each client (Computer) connecting to the server we will need a CAL (Client Activation License) in order for the computer to be a domain PC on the server. Do I need 20 CALS's
for Windows Server 2008 R2 and then another for Windows Server 2012 R2 if we are only upgrading to 2008 R2 to be able to upgrade to 2012 R2 without having to do a clean install.
For WindowsServer (Standard edition or Enterprise edition or DataCenter edition), a Client Access License (CAL) is required for each device (if you're using the per-Device CAL licensing method), or, is required for each user (if you're using the per-User
    CAL licensing method).
(whether you use per-Device, or per-User, is up to you, it comes down to cost).
CALs are version-specific (to a point) - i.e. if you purchased WS2008 CALs for your 20 devices, for use with your WS2008 server, and you are now upgrading that server to WS2012, you need to upgrade your CALs.
If you are adding a second server which is WS2012, and you are keeping your WS2008 server, you need to upgrade your CALs (because you only purchased WS2008 CALs which don't grant you the rights to connect to the newer server).
If you were to install your second server as WS2008, you wouldn't need to purchase additional CALs, because as long as the version is the same, a single CAL grant you access to unlimited server (of the same version).
CALs can be tricky to correctly license.
    Here's some introductory reading:
    http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/about-licensing/client-access-license.aspx#tab=1
And, none of this relates to the technical aspects of product installation/configuration at all (e.g. clean install vs. upgrade).
Windows Server CALs are not license keys/tokens/files which you install/load/download - Windows Server CALs are quite literally paper-based (just like a drivers license or car registration). You are required to have them, to be correctly licensed, but, you
don't physically do anything with them to own/drive a car.
