Upgrade trouble: iPhoto 4 - iPhoto 5; now is very slow

I have about 6000 photos in my iPhoto library. When I bought iLife to get iPhoto4, the response was much faster. I just upgraded to an iMac G5 with iLife (iPhoto 5.0.4), and now the startup and shut-down is extremely slow. I've seen other notes on the web that this has to do with combining what used to be .attr files into a single Library.iPhoto file, which can get bloated with images from my model of camera (Minolta). There's a script (exifcleaner.pl) that can be used to strip the offending data from new photos, but I'd like to be able to use my 6,000 pictures without having to lose comments, captions, etc.
Is there a fix for this, or should I go back to iPhoto 4? Can iPhoto 4 run on a G4 under Tiger?
iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Hi alan,
Do you have the iLife 4 CD/DVD?
Do you have an iPhoto 4 backup library?
If so, then yes, you can go back to 4.
To go back to an older version of iPhoto, you must have a backed up Library from that version. An older version of iPhoto will not open newer versions libraries.
If you have newly imported photos in your 5 library that are not in your backed up library you will need to share/export them now. Export the Original to the desktop. These can be imported once you are back in the older version of iPhoto.
Navigate to /Applications and drag iPhoto to the trash
Navigate to /Library/Receipts and drag all of the iPhoto receipts to the trash
Navigate to ~/Library/Preferences and drag com.apple.iPhoto.plist to the trash
Navigate to ~/Pictures and drag your iPhoto 5 Library folder to the desktop. You can keep it on your hard drive in another folder, or you can rename it and keep it in the Pictures folder, or you can move it to an external for safe keeping or you can burn the entire iPhoto Library folder for safekeeping.
Insert your older iLife CD/DVD and choose to do a custom install.
Install iPhoto
Run Software Update and update iPhoto to the latest version. that means if you installed 4 there should be some updated version of 4
Put your backed up iPhoto Library in the Pictures folder. If it is named iPhoto Library then it should open when iPhoto is launched.
If you renamed it, then launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and have it open the library you navigate to.
If you don't have a backed up version of the iPhoto Library of the version you want to install then you have a lot more steps to do.
If done this way, all albums, keywords, comments, folders will have to be redone because you are starting from scratch with a new library and importing these photos into the new library.
So the main question is, do you have a version 4 library backup because this is the only way you will still have all the metadata you added such as keywords, comments, etc.

My 2011 mac mini now runs very slow.  I have to wait on it to do basic things.  I only have 2 GB of ram.  It came with this amount and it fan fine for several years.  But I upgraded to the most recent Os system and now it runs slow.  What do I need?  More RAM?

That's one way to justify a new Mac. :-)  Adding more RAM to the 2009 model is cheaper, though (but I'm guessing not as much fun).

  • After upgrading to mountain lion my mac is very slow?

    Hello
After upgrading to mountain lion my mac is very slow
It was starting in 10 seconds and shuting dow in 5 seconds and now it's taking more than one minute to start it or shut down it and everything is slow
    why????????/
    Thanks

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
Take these steps when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 2
You must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way as above. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Post the 50 or so most recent messages in the log — the text, please, not a screenshot.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into a message.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out before posting.

  • IPhone 3GS updated to 5.0.1 now running very slow?

I updated my iphone 3GS to the new system 5.0.1 and now it is very slow and sometimes I have to tap an app several times to get it to respond?  Do I need to go back to the old version and can you?

I'll go backwards with my response.
Having restored my phone and reset all settings, operated phone as a new phone, didn't sync anything back onto it, etc., I installed only Tune in radion and it didn't play. I wiggled the dock cable about -the volume indicator kept changing and for a brief moment sound played. But, not for long.
I am thinking that there's something wrong with the dock connector.
    Previously I had:
Checked all settings, plus switched off Bluetooth - didn't work.
cleaned headphone socket and switch on side which mutes sound - didn't work.
Restored the phone, without restoring any of my backed up data. Tested phone as a new phone - didn't work. Tried:
voice memo - this was fine
changing ring tones - this was fine
playing a song from iTunes store - not ok.
As a New Phone, installed one App - Tune In Radio - no sound. Get speaker icon at bottom, but no indication of its setting. When I click on sound mute on/off switch at side of phone, above volume controls, I see volume level, but can't control it.
Reset all settings, so had to switch of bluetooth again and re-enter WIFI. No affect on sound.
I've tried the above with and without headphones.
So, after much time wasting, my Music App and Tune in radio apps don't work, but ringtones and voice memo works.

  • HP Deskjet 3520 e-All in one printer trouble with scanning network, connection and very slow print

    Dear all
I bought two days ago HP Deskjet 3520 e-All-in one printer serie, but i have some really bad issues with the scanner! I have searched on the internet and i couldn’t find anything to solve the problem.
I have installed the printer according to the book of the printer, so everything did go well(i think), except that i can’t connect the scan to my computer, a Mac OS X (i am connected with the printer). I get directed to the website where i can connect the scanner, but every time i try to connect it with wi-fi, i get two notification, one from my computer (from HP Itility (Dutch) program) that the connection is off and second from the website that i have to make sure that i’m connected with internet (which i am) and to check the IP address if it is the same with my computer (which is the same).
Obesely something did go wrong, but i can’t find the problem.
Beside when its copy or prints a document (no matter how many pages) it’s very slow. It takes 10 -15 minutes till the printer starts. Has it something to do with the problem i’ve got with the scanner or is the printer always so slow? Because the very first time, when i installed the printer, it printed very fast.
By the way i also print the test-results to check if there is a problem, but according to test-results there are no problems at all.
I hope that someone recognize this problem and can help me to solve it.
    Regards,
    Esra

  • Importing photos from iPhone to iPhoto on my MacBook Pro very slow

It's taking the best part of thirty minutes to import the photos from my iPhone 5 (iOS 6.1.4) into iPhoto (version 9.4.3) using my MacBook Pro (10.8.2). I've tried rebuilding the iPhoto databse which didn't have any positive effect to the process. I've got 8000 photos in iPhoto and 1700 on the iPhone. I'm doing the import everyday so there's usually not more than 20-30 photos to import, any idea why it is taking so long and what I can do to speed it up?

How full is your system drive? Can it be that you are running out of disk space?
Has it always been this slow to import from your iPhone, or only recently?
If it is a recent problem, what has changed lately? Have you installed, uninstalled, or updated any software?

  • IPhoto 6.4 is running very slow

iPhoto takes several minutes to do anything. Beachball spinning while I wait.
I iPhoto library is about 45gigs, I have 200gigs of free space on HD, 8 mg of ram on a MacBook Pro running OS 10.7.5.
I have tried removing the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file, I have repaired permissions, I have created a new library an imported 20 pics and iPhoto works just fine.
I have updated to the latest iPhoto.
This happened before [1 month ago] and I did a clean install on a NEW HD and iPhoto was working fine. As far as I can tell all other software is working fine.
    Any ideas?

What version of iPhoto do you have? There is no iPhoto 6.4. My answer ig based on the guess that you mean 9.4
Given that a new Library works just fine that poins the finger at the older one.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    Regards

  • I updated to 10.7.1 and lion now is very slow! Any ideas?

Especially mission control is very choppy and the graphics on the login are slow?

I am using iPhone 4S.  Under iOS 7.04 everything was working fine.  Now that I have updated to new 7.1 version, I am finding that the overall phone speed as been degregated.
Some times when answering the phone, you select to answer or swipe, it seems to hang up the phone.  I end up missing the call.
Some times when I try to hang up the phone, it does not hang up right away.  The phone appears to get stuck, you hear voices on the other end, but the call has not dropped.  It takes a while for the call to drop and free up the phone.
Typing is slow.  As you type, it does not show right away, only after 2 to 4 words have been typed then it will show all those characters.
    Internet browsing is slow.
I mostly use the phone for 3 things - Making/Receiving calls, Texting, and Internet browsing.  I don't play apps.
This is NOT a jailbrake phone, it's as original as it can get.  I am hoping a fix is put into place.  I have really lost faith in Apple's way of iOS upgrades.  This is my 2nd regret in upgrading to new iOS.

  • After upgrading to ios8, my iphone 5 is very slow.

After Upgrading to IO8, my iphone 5 is hanging on calls and while opening applications.

Try a reset: Simultaneously hold down the Home and On buttons until the device shuts down. Ignore the off slider if it appears. Once shut down is complete, if it doesn't restart on it own, turn the device back on using the On button. In some cases it also helps to double click the Home button and close all apps BEFORE doing the reset.
