Upgrade using new SL install disk?

A friend bought a new MacBook Pro, and I am trying to use his install disks to upgrade my computer to Snow Leopard. When I try to install the program, I encounter an error that says "Software cannot be installed on this computer". I have an Intel MacBook Pro with enough memory, so that shouldn't be a problem. Any ideas?

If you're trying to use grey discs to install the software on your computer, these discs are machine-specific and will only work with your friend's Mac.
If you have Leopard on your machine, you can get your own copy of Snow Leopard for $29.

  • Can we use new Leopard Install Disk on an old Macbook?

I recently purchased a new Macbook which came with pre-installed Leopard. I also have an old Macbook which has Tiger running on it. I tried to upgrade my old machine to the new Leopard using the new disks that came with the new system. But it gives an error "Mac OS X cannot be installed on this computer". Does apple prevent such installation or is there something I need to do to avoid this error?

The Leopard which shipped with a MacBook Pro can only install on a MacBook Pro of the same age.
The Tiger that shipped with a MacBook Pro can only be installed on a MacBook Pro of the same age.
The retail Leopard which looks like * will only install on a MacBook Pro older than the release of Leopard labeled on the disk (i.e. if the MacBook Pro shipped before 10.5.1 was released and 10.5.1 is on the label of a disk of that label imaged above, then it will work).
The retail release of Tiger which looks like will not install on ANY MacBook Pro.
If you lost your original installation discs which came with a Tiger pre-installed MacBook Pro call Applecare for replacement discs as they are critical for repairing the MacBook Pro if it should need repair. AppleCare's number is here:
    http://www.apple.com/contact/phone_contacts.html
If you are in that scenario having purchased from a non-authorized seller, ask the seller for the disc or to call AppleCare for the discs if they lost them as they must be always sold with the MacBook Pro they shipped with.

  • Neither software upgrade or Snow Leopard install disk will upgrade

Neither software upgrade or Snow Leopard install disk will upgrade
I run 10.5.5 and have tried to update my OSX using software upgrade and when I click install it greys out then a few seconds later it turns blue again and nothing happens.
So I purchased Snow Leopard hoping that would fix the problem. Well I insert the DVD and click install Snow Leopard, same thing, I click the blue install button, turns grey then a few seconds later turns blue again and nothing happens so I CANNOT UPGRADE!!
Anyone have some advice where to start?

    Hi eastwooddesign;
Upgrading to fix problems usually doesn't succeed and generally make them worst.
Exactly what Snow Leopard disk do you have?
Did you boot from that DVD?

My 2011 MBP has begun running slow with frequent 'spinning beach ball' events. I'm running Yosemite and wondered if I should of use the original install disk for a maintenance reinstall. I presume I'd have to download Yosemite again, though I'd be happy just using Snow Leopard again too.
    Thanks for the help.

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

  • HT3986 can bootcamp be used with Windows install disk on an external drive (internal is broken) ?

can bootcamp be used with Windows install disk on an external drive (internal is broken) ?

With Boot Camp, you must install Windows onto in internal HDD (or SSD).  If you are referring that your internal Optical drive is broken, you might be able to install Windows from an external drive, but you might not.  I have heard varying levels of success with that.  I'm not sure what the official stance is, but I do know that if youe machine shipped with an internal optical drive, then you must use that to install Windows using Boot Camp and not swap it out for a "data doubler" and try to install from an external optical drive.

  • Can I use my MacMini install disks to reinstall on my iMac?

I'm trying to use Boot Camp so I can create a 60GB partition on my iMac and install Win 7. However, I'm getting the infamous error about not being able to move files. So, it appears my only remedy is to wipe the internal drive on the iMac and reinstall from my Time Machine backup.
Unfortunately, my Snow Leopard install disks (family pack) is at my parent's house. However, I have a new MacMini that has Snow Leopard install disks. Before I go and mess up my iMac, can I use those install disks from the MacMini to reinstall from my TimeMachine backup?
I'm guessing it's either going to fail right away or not. If it doesn't fail, even if the install disks don't have the iMac drivers, the drivers should be in my backup... I think???
While I'm thinking about it too, if I am able to get to a point where I can use Boot Camp to install Win 7, I'll still need SL install disks. Will the MacMini disks work here too? Suppose I should post that under the Boot Camp category too.
    Thanks!

I also tried my SL upgrade disk I got for my MBP. When it's loaded while OS X is running on the iMac, it throws and error that it can't work on a machine that does not have 10.5 or higher installed (which is odd because 10.6.2 is installed). However, when I restart with the c key down, the install starts off fine... I didn't let it continue far since I was just experimenting here.
I'm hoping, though, the SL upgrade disk will be sufficient for loading the Boot Camp drivers... trying that next. If not, I think I can get away with the older 10.5 install disk which'll load older drivers, but I'm thinking I can get the latest drivers through Apple SW Update.
    Thanks

  • Can I use macbook pro install Disk with macbook?

    Hi everyone,
I have a macbook and macbook pro, I had to reinstall system after harddrive went on the macbook. I can't find my macbook restore disks/installation disks. Would I be able to use the macbook pro install disks with macbook?
    Much appreciate your help.
    Mo

It might work but it's risky. The MBP installation disks may well not contain the right drivers for the MacBook. It would be better, if at all possible, if you contacted Apple tech support and asked for a new set of disks for your MacBook. They'll send you a set for a reasonable fee. If you can't wait, perhaps there's an Apple Store or other Apple dealer near you that would have a set you could borrow in-store to do the reinstallation.

  • Can I use an iMac install disk on another iMac?

My wife just bought a 2010 iMac (3.06 GHz Intel Core i3), and it's identical to mine, but it didn't come with the 10.6 install disk.
    Can she use mine?
I can't seem to find a solid answer.
    Thank you

No.  System DVDs are machine specific.  Your wife needs to get the system DVDs from the place she purchased the comp from.  Older Macs are not to be sold w/o them per Apple's license agreement.
You can get replacement System Install & Restore CD/DVDs from Apple's Customer Support - in the US, (800) 767-2775 - for a nominal S&H fee. You'll need to have the model and/or serial number of your Mac available.
If you're not in the US, you may need to go through the regional Apple Store that serves your location to find the contact number. Here's a list of links to all of those - http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/intlstoreroutingpage.html Another resource:  International Support Phone #s.

  • HT6114 LaCie Quadra 2 1 TB not working since Upgrade to mavericks. Used new cables, run disk utility...nothing shown!

I've seen many related topics but they do not fix my problem.

Delete any drive software that may be on the drive, itself. Disconnect the drive, delete any LaCie software that maybe installed on your Mac, restart your Mac, then try reconnecting the drive.

  • Trade in / upgrade 10.4 server install disks?

I purchased a 10 user copy of 10.4 server for use at home. I would like to retire my old G4 server due to some hardware issues and install 10.4 server on a new Intel Mac. However, I believe my disks are PPC only. Is there a way to get universal 10.4 installer CDs either by calling someone at Apple, or paying a small fee and supplying my serial number to Apple?
    Thanks
    Steve Fuller

    Hi
If your copy of 10.4 Server is less than 10.4.7 you will have to buy the full version. There is no upgrade path from any version of 10.4 Server (prior to the release of the Intel Macs) regardless of license to 10.4 Server Univeral Binary.

  • Libraries won't upgrade after new iPhoto install

Yesterday, with help from a tip, we got our new iPhoto to intall on iBook. Opened one library and upgraded it. However, I have four other libraries (some stored on external drive), that show the albums, but no photos inside (thumbnails).
    Any suggestions?

    Hi Carol,
Glad you got iPhoto 5 installed!
    Some questions:
Were you able to open these libraries on the external drive with the older version of iPhoto?
When you navigate the library/libraries in the Finder do you see all your images in the dated folders?
This is a view of how the iPhoto Library looks in the Finder.
It is organized by Year folders. Inside the Year folders are Month folders. Inside the Month folders are the days of the Month. Inside the day folders are the photos you took on that day. If you imported video clips and RAW files on that day they will be in an Originals folder. If you have edited any photo imported on that day, the original will be in that folder also.

  • Used the wrong install disk and now it wont eject the disk

Alright I know that I'm an idiot but I made a boo boo.
I have a G4 powerbook (newer one with the superdrive) that needed a new hard drive. I changed the harddrive no problem but heres my problem:
I went to install the OS and I have a new MacBook, and I accidently put the disk for the MacBook in the PowerBook and now the Powerbook wont give it back! It doesnt have the little spot to stick a paperclip in and it gives you the cd back.
Obviously the computer cannot boot from the MacBook disk and I've tried EVERYTHING to get the disk to come out. But since the disk is mounted and is what the utilities are running off of it wont eject it.
I would open up my powerbook again and try to pry out the disk but i dont want to run the computer or the disk.
    Any suggestion?
    Thanks in advance.

"I can try this my only concern is that the disk utility is running from the boot disk and i have a feeling it wont eject the disk if the utility is running off the disk."
You may have a point there. That's why I recommended the Firewire, Target Disk Mode. I know it works. At least, that's the way I've always gotten out stuck disks. And in my case, most of the time, it's been when I've reformatted a drive and it has no startup volume or OS to startup from.
So, if you have a disc in there, it will not spit it out. (Not saying that other's suggestions won't work to do so).
Starting up in Target Disk Mode bypasses that function, booting up, so while it's connected to another Mac, it doesn't need the disc nor will it access it while on.
You might be able to do your own suggestion. But the external CD-ROM drive will have to be connected via FireWire in order for the Mac to recognize your installation disc as a startup volume. (Also, make sure installation disc is not a DVD as opposed to a CD... most installation discs in the latter G4 era were DVDs, if I'm correct-- especially Tiger).
In that case, when you startup, hold down the OPTION key so that you can choose which install disc to startup/boot from. Just make sure you choose the one that's in your external optical drive.
P.S. Did you HOLD DOWN the mouse button when starting up? You can't just click on it. Once you turn the Mac on, hold down the mouse button until the disc comes out, and don't let go.

  • Using Windows Install Disk

This is probably a stupid question, but I have not used a PC in a while.. Can I use the same install disk as the one my wife used on her PC? Or not because of the serial encryption...any help would be appreciated. I just don't want to shell out $200 for an OS.

Below the wrong reply I was composing, before I learned the news (thanks Red Dwarf)
and after I recovered from syncope...
    Sorry for the confusion.
    Hi jgraphix,
Windows and Mac OS are completely different operating systems, that cannot be installed on the same machines.
There is no way you could achieve such installation.
I don't understand why you would do that?
If you need to reinstall Mac OS X, which is a better OS anyway, just use the install DVD that came with your computer?
