Upgrade video card for Late 2005 PowerMac G5

I am looking for an upgrade video card for a Late 2005 PowerMac G5, which has the PCI-Express slots. I need at least 256 MB of VRAM.
Since this computer is a discontinued model, there doesn't seem to be too many options for video cards. I've seen some cards like the NVidia 6600 or 6800, or even ATI's X800, but they appear to be difficult to find.
The one card that is readily available still is the ATI X1900, which looks great, but a little on the pricey side ($349).
I did notice the NVidia 7300 GT, which is more moderately priced ($145), but it only mentions being an upgrade card for the Mac Pro. Will this also work with the PowerMac G5 (Late 2005) model? I would hate to buy this video card and then find out that it won't work.

The only available upgrade card for the Late 2005 G5s is the X1900GT (aka G5 Edition). It's basically on par with the nVidia 7800GT that was available as a BTO option.
You can get the 7800GT and QuadroFX 4500 as replacement parts, but they're exorbitantly priced.
The Mac Pro cards won't work (even though they're also PCI-Express) due to the ROM on the card. It's only setup to work with the Mac Pro's EFI boot system and doesn't have the necessary code to work with the PowerMac's Open Firmware boot system.

How can I upgrade my video card on my compaq S6000CL?  I have vista installed (upgrade).  I'd like to download the upgraded video card software and not have to replace the whole video card.
    Thanks!

    Hi pilot3579,
So, in looking at the specifications for your computer (Compaq Presario S6000CL Desktop PC support), it appears you might have to get a video card in order to enhance your graphics. Your computer came with integrated graphics, and though there is one video driver available on your computer, it can only be downloaded with the originally installed Windows XP operating system still in place. I know that's not exactly what you wanted to hear, but that is the situation you are looking at.

    Hi there!
So you got a dual core machine huh?
    Let's narrow down your choices.
The Radeon 2600 and the 3870 are Mac Pro cards. They won't work in the G5.
    Forget the X1300 as well.
The Radeon X1900 is a possible candidate, but it must be the G5 Edition X1900 GT. The one that you linked is for Intel macs (Mac Pro).
In fact, all cards that you linked are not candidates for the G5.
Here are your choices from slower to faster:
    Geforce 6600 256MB
    Geforce 7800GT
    Radeon X1900GT G5 Edition
    Quadro FX 4500
    Geforce 7800 GTX

  • Upgrade Video Card for HP Pavilion a6228x Desktop PC

I'm wanting to upgrade the video card and was wondering if there were any suggestions as to a good card for under $60. I just need something equivalient to  "NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT or ATI Radeon X1950 Pro" or better. I just got Star Wars the Old Republic and my factory istalled graphics card is not powerful enough. I'm a bit confused on what type of graphics card my desktop takes. I did read that it has
PCI Two (One available) PCI Express x16 One (One available) PCI Express x1 One (One available)
Would a PCI Express 2.0 fit in one of these?
One of the cards I am considering is:

Any suggestions would be great. Thank you.

    Hi,
You might want to google Stars Wars Old Republic system requirements and see what others are suggesting.  Game performance is also tied to the game quality settings and monitor resolution that you want to use.
I suggested these upgrades for another user wanting some suggestions.

  • Do I Need To Upgrade Video Card for ACD 20" for the PowerPC G4

    Hello,
I am extremely new to the MAC world so forgive my ignorance. I have a 450Mhz Power PC G4 running a 20gb harddrive. I recently bought the ACD 20" and when I tried to "plug and pray" the display came on for the initial "Apple" screen but when it came time to boot into the OS I got a black screen. I am running OS 10 Tiger and I have AGP graphics. From what I can discern I have a "ATY, Rage 128 Pro".
I read from another posting that the G4s that have the analog and digital video cards need to be upgraded. My question: Is there an upgradable solution for my system and if so what is it? Please say yes!!! LOL
    Thanks

  • Upgrading video card for adobe CS6

I am wondering if this can be upgraded to a more current card the system itself is working great till I installed Adobe CS6.
It still works fine but the redraw tends to stall and give weird artifacting at random times
I have 2 screens 24" EIZO main display for color
15 inc NEC for pallets and extra realestate
Any help on this matter woud be great

  • AirPort Extreme Card for "Late 2005" G5 needed

    Hello!
I am trying to buy and install WiFi in an old G5 which identifies itself as
    PowerMac11,2
    Dual 2,0 GHz
According to Mactracker that makes it a "Late 2005" G5, and this is where trouble begins for me…
I searched for information on that; this is what I think is right at the moment:
All G5s – except for this "Late 2005" Modell – work with AirportExtreme! Cards.
This one needs an AirportExtreme!/Bluetooth card.
This card cannot be purchased from Apple, costs loads of money and is hard to install.
Could anyone help me confirm or invalidate anything of that?
Maybe you even know what I can do to still get WiFi?
All I would like is an affordable solution.
Thank you very much for helping out a recent switcher who thought life would be easier on the other side
    greets,
    Ludwig

Thank you for your encouraging answer, Silent One.
Now, I don't want to rebuff you, but I think Apple wrote this for a reason:
+"This AirPort Extreme Card is not compatible with the Mac Pro or the Power Mac G5 Dual and Power Mac G5 Quad computers introduced in October 2005. To add an AirPort Extreme card to one of these systems, please contact an Apple Retail Store or other Authorized Apple Service Provider. "+ (http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=85A 8FBC1&nplm=M8881LL/A)
I am quite sure that I need to find a different solution.
Thanks for your help, though, and please correct me if I'm just talking nonsense here,

  • What is the best video card for late 2003 PM G4 MDD'?

I, currently, use an ATI 9600 PC/Mac edition 256 MB card in this Mac.
It's performance is okay for most things except for 720p video.
I know it will never be possible for this old workhouse to view and play 1080p video, but I am on the hunt
For a better card that may get me better streaming and playback of 720p video as well as better/faster capatibilty on
    OS X 10.5.8.

Does this particular card need additonal power from the power supply?
    Yes.
If so, where does this plug into?
Pull it from a hard drive power connector or use a Molex splitter if all are in use.
Is the MDD power supply able to handle extra powering of a video card?
    Yes.
the instructions mention using this card with a PCI slot cooler?
Optional, but due to the MDD being a hot beast not a bad idea.
Are these cheap and where can I purchase, easily either from electronics chain or internet?
    Cheap and easy.
    http://www.xoxide.com/thermaltake-cyclo-blue-slotcooler.html
Can this card be used without it or the temps inside the MDD be too high.
YMMV. Depends on how hot the MDD runs and how far overclocked the X3 is.
My experience with video cards is , usually, plug and play made for Mac cards.
This ain't a Mac card. It's a hacked for Mac card. Things are different on the dark side, and usually a lot faster.....
Can the slot cooler be placed in any open PCI slot?
    Yes.
Does it have to be near the video card?
Doesn't matter. It's there to help with the MDD heat issues.
Where does this plug in to get power to the fan?
Same as the graphics card with the same answer regarding PSU ability, etc., etc.
Will I have to move PCI cards around to install the slot cooler?
Dunno. Ain't seen inside your machine.
Will this fan make my MDD even more noisier than it is now.
    Add two fans, likely.
The linked PCI cooler isn't loud, and the X3 is only loud running full tilt.
The MDD's  regular fans never power down.
Doe you use CHUD and Nap mode? If not, your wrong.....

Need some help from all of you and maybe some procedures and pics of an actual installation.

Hi I had the same problem. With my older 2.0 G5 so I bought a ATI 9600XT 128MB DDR ram from a place that had them for $100 it was a nice card I just until I bought a new in the Box Apple Nvida GeForce 6800GT DDL 256-MB's DDR3 Ram (way faster then DDR) I looked at the ATI X800XT it is in my eyes not as good as a Apple Nvida GeForce 6800 Ultra or GT. The 6800's have shader 3.0 (Only AGP Mac cards to have it) EBay has new 6800 Ultra & GT's for $350 with Apple warranty. Plus then your not buying 3Ed party. Just know to get my Quad to run duel 30's with out more cards it cost me $1,399. The Apple Nvida 6800's kill my friends ATI 850XT (faster then the X800XT) In FC5, Games & Aperture only true draw back is you lose 1 PCI or PCI X slot I run with the other two full it's fine. So why buy a ATI X800XT when you may want the extra power to run two 30-inch displays? Look before you buy you will see.

  • Best Video Card for the G5?

What's the best Video Card I can put in my G5?
    Currently I've got a:
Mac Dual 2.7 GHz PowerPC G5, w/4GB DDR SDRAM, and 256 MB total of VRAM. The existing graphics card is the: NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT DDL
    Thanks!

    Hi,
If you haven't noticed, there are only two choices available from Apple. The nvidia 6600 (slower than yours) and the ATI X800 (similar to yours).
There is a place that flashes Nvidia 7800's from PC to Mac, I installed one the other day and it works perfect in a Quad.
In addition, there was a contract signed last month between XFX and Apple for upgrade video cards for Mac G4's and G5's. It was reported that this merchandise may be available by Summer (nothing definite).

It appears the 15" 2.2 ghz isn't worth spending $400 more for, but you get the 1GB Radeon 6750M that has four times the VRAM than the 15" 2.0Ghz model and about 167% more performance. High settings on all current games with over 50 fps.
If your not into 3D gaming or just light weight, then the 2.0 Ghz (last years performance) will suffice on low-medium settings at about 30 fps.
The 13" is rather poor as it has integrated graphics. 30 fps on only some games.
The high res screen is a excellent choice and the anti-glare is great for viewing just about anywhere.
No messy films to replace at $30-$40 a pop.
A lot of people bring the glossy screens back once they hear about the anti-glare.
    http://www.pcpro.co.uk/blogs/2011/05/23/glossy-vs-matte-screens-why-the-pc-indus trys-out-of-touch/
    Here's my 17"
In my opinion the extra $400 for another 2-3 years of use out of the computer is worth it.
Quad cores are more than enough for most uses for most people for many years, it's just a slow card is going to make the machine feel slow in rendering graphics in the future.

  • Dual Monitor video cards for HP Pro 3400

I am looking to add a 2nd monitor to my HP Pro 3400 MT and want to make sure I get a video card that will not have any compatibility issues.  I'm not doing any gaming so I don't think I need anything super fancy and I would prefer not to have to upgrade the power supply.
    So my questions are:
Is the HP Pro 3400 MT compatible witha PCI Express 3.0 card?  2.1 ?
How much power draw from the video card would require me to upgrade the power supply (my PC is stock, no added peripherals).  Is there a way for me to determine how much is being currently (no pun intended) drawn?
Are there any drawbacks to usnig the built-in video card for 1 monitor and a new, single-ouput card for the other (vs a dual-output card) ?
Anything else I need to consider when deciding on a new video card?

  • Which video card for Aperture and dual monitors?

I have a G5 dual 2.0 with a GeForce FX 5200 video card that is driving one 23" Cinema display. I need to upgrade my card per the specs to run Aperture. I have also been thinking of getting a second 23" display. Can someone recommend the best video card for me. I know very little about video cards and have been reading a lot this morning. Thanks,
    Dave

    Hi Dave;
No. PCIx and PCIe or PCI Express are not the same thing.
PCIx is an extended or slight sped up version of PCI. While PCIe is a switched bus structure instead.
Hence they are not the same. That is what all of the big news is about Apple has made the leap over to PCI Express.

  • Can I replace an ATI RADEON 9800 PRO-(256MB)-MAC EDITION with Mac ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb Video Card For G4/G5

    Hi,
I am trying to help a friend whose graphics card has bust.
The old one was an ATI RADEON 9800 PRO-(256MB)-MAC EDITION.
I've been looking on ebay and it seems a lot cheaper to get a Mac ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb Video Card For G4/G5.
Can I just swap them over?  The connectors are not identical according to the photographs.
    Thanks.

I'd like to thank everyone for all the really useful information in this thread. It helped me solve a similar problem, which I'll describe here briefly in case it helps someone else.
I have a 2004/5 dual 2 Ghz PowerPC G5 and an Apple Cinema HD display linked, as I later found out, with the now defunct ADC connector. The display suddenly started to look like that scene in The Matrix, when code falls like rain down the screen, and I worked out I needed to replace my Radeon 9800 pro video card (I discovered the board was blue when I removed a thick layer of dust).
I took japamac's excellent advice and bought a Geforce 6800 Ultra from the linked eBay seller in Hong Kong, who delivered it extremely quickly, along with the cables to plug it into the DVD drive power source and a CD with installation instructions. It was only then that I realised the card had two DVI connectors and my display needed ADC (I hadn't understood the difference).
eBay came to the rescue again with a seller who had a secondhand DVI to ADC adapter, which Apple produced  when it phased out ADC about six years ago but no longer sells. It has its own power supply and looks like a large version of the Mac laptop power cables - and has added signifcantly to the pile of spaghetti under my desk.
Installing the Geforce 6800 Ultra is fiddly, and a bit scary if you're not used to delving into the insides of a Mac, but the instructions were clear and illustrated with useful photos. The video cable has four connectors. Two fit into the end of the card, the other two (linked in a Y shape) form a bridge between the DVD/superdrive and its power cable. You have to remove the DVD drive, unplug it, and then plug one of the two Y video card connectors into the DVD power cable and the other into the DVD drive itself. Then you replace the DVD drive, plug the two remaining cable connectors to the video card and ease it into the old card's AGP slot.
Finally, with the G5 reassembled, plug the adapter's DVI connection into the back of the card, plug the Cinema Display ADC cable into the adapter block, plug the adapter's USB cable into the G5 (this enables the the USB ports on the back of the display to work), and power up.
At the time of writing, the display has been up and running for a couple of hours and all seems fine.
Thanks again everyone for all your help and advice. If it wasn't for communities like this, it would be virtually impossible to solve problems with old but still serviceable Macs.
