Upgrade Windows Hyper-v 2012 R1 core to windows Hyper-v 2012 R2 Core

Hi all,
is it possible to upgrade stand alone hyper-v 2012 R1 core server to hyper-v 2012 R2 core server?could anyone guide me the process of upgrading? I really appreciate your help. Thank u so much in advance.

Hi D.sree charan,
"A clean upgrade is safer, if you do not mind exporting and re-importing the VMs, or moving them all to another host, before the upgrade. On the other hand, with the upgrade cycle now faster than before, in-place upgrade makes sense as
a way of keeping pace with little pain."

  • Upgrading Windows Server 2012 Essential Eval to Windows Server 2012 R2 Retail

I need to upgrade from Windows Server 2012 Essential Eval version to Windows Server 2012 R2 Retail.  What would be the easiest way to upgrade if license $$ is not an issue? The Server is a DC.  Would the following works:
    1. Upgrade from Windows Server 2012 Essential Eval to Windows Server 2012 Essential Retail
    2. Do a conversion from Windows Server 2012 Essential Retail to Windows Server 2012 Standard Retail (I suppose this just require several command line to enable the 2012 Standard)
    3. Do an in-place upgrade from Windows Server 2012 Standard to Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard (there is no need to do migration, am I right?)
    Thanks.

I just did a simulation using Hyper V.  It seems that I'm able to do the upgrade sequence as described but I'm not sure whether there are any side effect that not yet surface out.  Here is the details steps that I took:
    1. Under Windows Server 2012 Essential Eval
convert the Windows Server Essential 2012 Eval to Windows Server Standard 2012 using the following command in an elevated command prompot
    dism /online /set-edition:ServerStandard /productkey:xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx /accepteula
press "y" and return to restart as prompted
the productkey could be retail key or the KMS client keys (just for installation not for activiation)
    2. After reboot, the system become Windows Server 2012 Standard
    using admin account to login
add admin account to the Enterprise Admins group and Schema Admins group if not already done so, logout and login again
mount the Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard disk in, say, drive d:
in an elevated command prompt, go the following:
    cd d:\support\adprep
    .\adprep.exe /forestprep
    .\adprep.exe /domainprep
double click on d: in explore to run the Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard setup
follow the instruction to complete the in-place upgrade from Windos Server 2012 to Windows Server 2012 R2
    3. After reboot into Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard, go to the charms bar, select setting -> server info, it will mention the server is not activated, click on Activate Windows and key in the Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard retail key

  • How to Install Hyper-V on a Virtual Machine in Hyper-V on windows 2erver 2012 R2 ?

    Hi ,
anybody know  How to Install Hyper-V on a Virtual Machine in Hyper-V on windows 2erver 2012 R2 ?
I want to create lab but i couldn't  I follow this article but the new VM is off
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/gbanin/archive/2013/06/26/how-to-install-hyper-v-on-a-virtual-machine-in-hyper-v.aspx
one of hyper-v component is not running
    thanks

Previously it has been blocked to install Windows Server in the VM and then add the Hyper-V Role.
However, it has always been possible to install Hyper-V Server inside a VM. (the free Hyper-V Server SKU)
The Hyper-V Server VM is fully manageable, but it cannot start any VMs.

  • Migrate from server core 2008 r2 hyper-v with failover cluster volumes to server core 2012 r2 hyper-v with failover cluster volumes on new san hardware

We are getting ready to migrate from server core 2008 r2 hyper-v with failover cluster volumes on an iscsi san to server core 2012 r2 hyper-v with failover cluster volumes on a new iscsi san.
I've been searching for a "best practices" article for this but have been coming up short.  The information I have found either pertains to migrating from 2008 r2 to 2012 r2 with failover cluster volumes on the same hardware, or migrating
to different hardware without failover cluster volumes.
If there is anyone out there that has completed a similar migration, it would be great to hear any feedback you may have on your experiences.
Currently, my approach is as follows:
    1. Configure new hyper-v with failover cluster volumes on new SAN with new 2012 r2 hostnodes and 2012 r2 management server
    2. Turn off the virtual machines on old 2008 r2 hyper-v hostnodes
    3. Stop the VMMS service on the 2008 r2 hostnodes
    4. copy the virtual machine files and folders over to the new failover cluster volumes
    5. Import vm's into server 2012 r2 hyper-v.
Any feedback on the opertain I have in mind would be helpful.
    Thank you,
    Rob

    Hi Rob,
Yes , I agree with that "file copy " can achieve migration.
Also you can try "copy cluster wizard " :

  • Having trouble switching from Core to GUI with Server 2012...

    Hello,
I am currently in the early stages of studying for the MCSA - Windows Server 2012 R2 and I'm playing around with an Eval copy of Windows Server 2012 R2 DataCenter.  I have two separate installs where one is the Full - GUI install and the other is Server
Core.  I've learned in my studies that it is possible to switch back and forth between Core and GUI through Powershell cmdlets.
Right now I'm trying to switch from Server Core to GUI and I'm using the following Powershell command:
           Install-WindowsFeature Server-Gui-Mgmt-Infra, Server-Gui-Shell
It starts off like it's going to work but then after about 68% of the way through, I get this:
Install-WindowsFeature : The request to add or remove features on the specified server failed.
Installation of one or more roles, role services, or features failed.

Any ideas?  I installed this Server Core image on a Hyper-V Virtual Machine (using Generation 2), allocating 4GB RAM and 65GB HDD space.  I haven't done anything with .Net Framework and I haven't configured the network at all.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi SLONER,
You need use the -source option on a non-Internet connected machine.
    PLease try the script below:
    Install-WindowsFeature Server-Gui-Mgmt-Infra,Server-Gui-Shell –Restart –Source c:\mountdir\windows\winsxs
    And follow this thread:
PowerShell to Add GUI to Server Core (ServerCore-FullServer)

I see that you are saying all versions of Windows 8 are failing on your system, but are you including 32-bit and 64-bit flavors?  I understand why 32-bit versions might give you grief (too much RAM for a 32-bit system to handle).  A 64-bit system might still have device driver issues.  Microsoft does not auto-magically have all the device drivers in the world that are necessary to make any system usable.  The original device manufacturers must provide Microsoft with drivers before the Windows Update servers would be able to communicate said drivers to the computers in question.
In regards to Apple devices, Apple has not yet released the device drivers needed to run the hardware with Windows 8.  Apple has released the drivers for previous versions of Windows (XP SP2 and higher, Vista RTM and higher, 7 RTM and higher) to their userbase, but not to Microsoft for distribution through Windows Update (unless I am mistaken).  Until Apple releases a version of Boot Camp updated for use with Windows 8, they have not yet released any form of the full collection of necessary device drivers for normal device function with Windows 8.  Running compatibility mode on the Windows 7 device driver bundle via boot camp is not a fully palatable solution because compatibility mode generally is meant for application programs, not device driver services.  Therefore, partial compatibility might be gained by using the Windows 7 device drivers for Windows 8 with the compatibility mode enabled prior to install.  Unfortunately, much unanticipated incompatibility is equally likely with such a decision.
Some parting words on the subject may be necessary for clarification: prior to the RTM versions of Windows 8, the trial versions of Windows 8 were distributed with a much wider array of device drivers than the RTMs.  This was for Microsoft's testing purposes.  Furthermore, some of the architecture used during the trial period likely used Windows 7 engines more than Windows 8 engines.  This means the Windows 7 drivers pack would have had more likelihood of working during the Beta and Release Candidate periods than during the final Golden Master period we have now entered.  Regardless, it is not recommended by Apple (our hardware manufacturer) to use another method of installing Windows on a Mac than to utilize Boot Camp.
As Mende1 suggested, you would be wise to reinstall a previous version of Windows you may have been running.  Also, given your previous post, you will want to repair your OS X installation back to full functionality prior to the Windows reinstall.  For a reasonable timeline estimate, consider that it took 89 days from the original release of Windows 7 by Microsoft until Apple originally released device drivers via an updated Boot Camp.  That puts a reasonable ETA for the necessary Boot Camp update at January 22nd/23rd.  Even though this does not seem to apply to your situation, the discounted download for the Windows 8 Pro Upgrade will end after January 31st.
    Cheers!

  • T420 hyper-v does not install after windows 8.1 RTM

I am a developer and I had to upgrade my system to windows 8.1 RTM.
My machine was orginally windows 7, I upgraded to windows 8 and after a few patches and updates all was well. I ran hyper-v vms on my machine the last 1 1/2 year successfully. After the upgrade to 8.1 it would not install the hyper-v feature.
I verified after the install that my BIOS still had both virtualizaiton settings enabled.  i saw other posts that the issue could be attributed the network card, or video card, or USB 3 being enabled. I am suspecting network driver as I used to run CISCO VPN client 5.x on my windows 8. However, on windows 8 Cisco vpn client did not work if I used the wireless adapter. I got around that issue by using ShrewSoft VPN when I needed to use my wireless network adapter for VPN. Both completely stop working, and once uninstalled could NOT be installed again on windows 8.1 system.
I also saw that Lenovo may not release 8.1 drives until october, but I really need them now as I can't restore back to windows 8.0 because I need the 8.1 kernel for my work, but then I also need hyper-v to work as well. Any help or sugguestions are welcome.
A quick point about the message: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Windows-8/Hyper-V-on-Windows-8-not-working/m-p/844685/highlight/true#M51...
vmware does not work if he didn't have virtualization BIOS settings set.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

When I tried to do a clean install of windows 8.1, I found out that I had a bad iso image.  I downloaded it again and then did a clean install and everything works fine now.

  • RemoteFX Display problems with Windows 8.1 VM but not with Windows 7 VM running on Hyper-V VDI Server 2012R2

Has anyone seen anything like this?
After many, many, hours of wading through and eliminating potential variables the issue has been narrowed down to being present with a Windows 8.1 VM and not on Windows 7 VM.
The problem is with glitchy display issues (Random Pixellation, Fuzzy Screen areas, Entire Screen filled with random shapes/colors etc.).
This is a Server 2012 R2 environment it is running Hyper-V Remote Desktop Virtualization Host.
An Nvidia Quadro K2200 adapter has been enabled for RemoteFX and passed through.
Also have tried Nvidia Grid K2 adapter. Both adapters use same driver set and multiple driver versions have been tested.
Two Generation 1 VM's have been created.  One for WIndows 8.1, One for Windows 7.  All updates installed.
Each VM uses the same set of Hyper-V resources, Virtual Switch etc.  (The settings for each VM are the same).
With RemoteFX disabled on each VM the issue is not present on either VM.
With RemoteFX enabled on each VM the issue is present on the Windows 8.1 VM and not the Windows 7 VM.
There is no difference if only one VM at a time is enabled and running.  (Not GPU load related)

    Hi,
Generation 2 virtual machines have a simplified virtual hardware model, and supports Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) firmware instead of BIOS-based firmware. The majority of legacy devices have also been removed from generation 2 virtual machines.

  • Upgrading hyper-v server 2008r2 free version to hyper-v server 2012r2 free version

    Hello,
I have a question, can I upgrade the software of hyper-v server 2008r2 free version to hyper-v server 2012r2 free version.
I want to upgrade a exciting server so a in place upgrade, if yes do I have to worry about something? like shutting down vm's?
    thx in advance

    Hi,
it's not possible to perform an inplace upgrade from Hyper-V server 2008R2 to Hyper-V server 2012
You can find some more info
    here.
You can export your Hyper-V guests, reinstall the machine with a fresh install and import them again.
    Hope this helps.

  • Would it be possible to redirect an incoming RDP request to a Hyper-V hypervisor running on a Windows 8 machine?

    Hello,
I'm currently a Computer Systems Networks student in my Final Year, and I'm doing some research into a project I'm working on.
What I'm currently looking at is the feasibility of using existing Microsoft tech to redirect an RDP request (received by a server) to a separate cluster of physical machines on the same network running Windows 8/Windows 8.1, which themselves would be running
a Hyper-V hypervisor. I am aware that Windows Server 2008 R2 (and thus, I'm also assuming 2012) has an option to redirect an RDP request to a virtual machine which is in a pool, but to my knowledge (although I may be mistaken), the pool can only hold virtual
machines which are running on the same server.
In addition, my project will involve the establishment (and destruction of) virtual machines as the need arises, with user-specified resource availability.
I'd be grateful to anyone offering answers/advice. Similarly, if you need additional information to understand the project, please let me know and I'll try to elaborate.
    Many thanks,
    Chris Hill

Not sure how that would work.. The Connection Broker redirects the user to the server in the collection that's most preferable based on a number of criteria.. Current session, load, etc. So if your vms are all part of the same collection I'd say no.
Nothing is stopping you from creating a new collection for every VM though. That way a user can always connect to the same vm / collection through the broker.
I posted some step-by-step guides on 2012 R2 Remote Desktop setups on my personal blog (link in my profile since I'm not sure if I'm allowed to promote a personal blog here), perhaps those posts can help you in the right direction.

    How to fix this error?

For anyone else, you may need to reset any failed jobs statusid back to 3 after you run the script from
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn299381.aspx (first
    issue)
and after that run your jobs in correct order.
I had to reset the statusid for DWMaintenence and common.load.
