Upgraded 10.5.7 & no ext. monitor. I have listed what's been done thus far

Laptop-early fall 2008 macbook. (no upgrades)
Monitor (bought in sept 08 and been working great since)- Samsung 24" 2493HM dvi to dvi (mini)
1. Updated to 10.5.7 on May 15 then shutdown and went to bed.
2. Booted up in the morning and no external monitor
3. Bought new cables, dvi-dvi and the adapter as well but to no avail. Also tried every combo of powering up, booting and switching cables.
4. Brought my computer in to a store and tried 4 monitors and nothing worked
5. Tried the PRAM m’jig
6. Tried resetting SMC
7. Tried safe boot
8. Tried SwitchRex (sp?)
8. Reinstalled 10.5.2 still nothing
9. Wiped out HD and reinstalled everything from my ext.HD to 10.5.6…a few days before I upgraded but still nothing.
Odd thing is, is that I can see the resolutions listed and the monitor self test shows no problems there…hence the trial in the store to confirm that it’s not the monitor.
I’ve been on the phone with apple for a few days and the rep has been helpful and very courteous, but I’m still at square one. They sent off some stuff, I understand it was a log of what was happening those wee hours before this happened.
Please, please, please can anyone help me or suggest anything else I may try?!!

I have the early fall unibody macbook, just before the aluminum release. Sorry for the confusion about the display hookup. It's a dvi cable connected to the adapter for the mini-dvi port (I think that's what it's called)
Well, there is still confusion since the unibody and the aluminum MacBook are the same thing. So, you can't have an "early fall unibody MacBook" that was "just before the aluminum release" (since they are the same thing). In any case, I guess you have one of the older white MacBooks and _not_ one of the newer units that use a Mini DisplayPort for the external video connection. If what I surmise is correct, then you really should have posted in the MacBook( black and white) forum:
http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1168
In any case, it probably makes little difference since the problem diagnosis and resolution would be similar regardless of which MacBook you have. I guess what you are using to connect to the display is as follows:
White MacBook + Mini DVI-to-DVI adapter -> DVI cable -> computer display
It's beginning to sound like you _may_ have a defective display port on the MacBook. If you've already done a CLEAN install of 10.5.2 and/or 10.5.6 and have reset the SMC and have zapped the PRAM and have tried a second (and known good) adapter and cable and it still isn't working then the graphics port on the MacBook seems to be the only remaining unknown. This assumes, of course, that you've tried all of the above at the same time and on the same configuration of hardware.
However, if you've done some type of archive and re-install of Mac OS X then you may still have some corrupted caches or preferences. In this case you should reference the thread that pancenter suggested. Do this before you try anything else as I've outlined below.
Frankly, you also seem to be a little confused about exactly what hardware and adapters you are using. Thus, I'd take a careful second look at your adapters and cables and make certain that your setup on the computer and display are correct before you assume failure. Also, just because a previous setup has failed doesn't mean you've eliminated everything in that setup as a point of failure. Case in point, it seems unlikely that you tried a clean install of an earlier version of Mac OS X with those other displays at the store. I'm assuming that you tried those displays with the original install of 10.5.7 immediately after the initial failure.
My suggestion would be:
1.) Since your MacBook is still under warranty get Apple involved. Visit an Apple retail store if possible. This is your probable next step (i.e. ignore the below "otherwise").
-- otherwise --
1.) Do a completely CLEAN install of Mac OS X using your original DVD installer disk and don't update to 10.5.7. This can be done on a second, external drive if you don't want to erase what you currently have on the MacBook's internal drive. Do NOT attempt to use this new Mac OS X installation with the display you have at home (Since it sounds like you've already done these steps on your display at home, if not then you may want to try these steps with the display you have at home. But if you do then go back and do a clean install a second time before you go back to the computer store).
2.) Using this clean install (only) go back to the computer store with both sets of cables and adapters and try each in combination with each other on a display that is different than the one you have at home.
3.) Reset the SMC and zap the PRAM prior to each test with new cables/adapters. Do this reset and zap while you have the external display and adapters disconnected. Throw away the cache files as outlined in the post that pancenter provided. Power down both the MacBook and display, connect the display, turn the display on, turn the MacBook on. See if it works, if NOT then go into the Displays preference panel and click the "Detect Displays" button.
If all of the above fails, then you most likely have a defective graphics port on your MacBook. In that case, it's well past time to contact Apple and see about a warranty repair.

  • Upgrade to IOs8 and not all photo's have come across? I don't remember seeing a migrate photo option - help

Hi - can you retrospectively see the option to migrate photos from iphoto to photo's? If not how do i get my photos from iphoto to show in photos after upgrading? Any help appreciated

because IOS8 now doesn't allow iphoto to open anymore even though it's still there.
Have you tried it?  When I launch iPhoto on my iPad or iPhone with iOS 8 , it brings up the question if I want to migrate.  You just can do anything else but migrating.
. I plugged my phone into itunes and under photos even checked all the boxes for my photos and it appears some have come across but not all.
Do you have enough storage on your iPhone to accommodate all photos you selected?

  • No video output to ext monitor in rehearsal mode

(My whole presentation is made up of video and stills)
Hi, when I'm in rehearsal mode (Keynote 6.5.2) i cannot get full screen video output to my ext monitor.  It is only a black screen. In 'play mode' the presentation plays fine and it will give me full screen video but then i have no control of the presentation as it just plays out to the length of the clips used in each slide. I managed to save as a Powerpoint presentation which allowed me to use the play function and control it manually but i could not see the current slide playing in the presenter display. It also wiped all my trimming settings of the videos i am using.
Is there a way to run my presentation in rehearsal mode and have full screen video outputed to an external monitor and see my current slide playing on my presenter display.
My whole presentation is video and stills.
    I am using an iMac, 2.9GHz i5, 8GB Ram, OS X Yosemite 10.10.1.
    Thanks in advance
    Jason

if i use an iPad to control it gives me full control to advance on click
Please clarify;   you use the iPad remote control feature to advance manually a presentation on your Mac, or you are playing the presentation on your iPad.
Did you create the presentation on the Mac yourself and what version of Keynote did you use?
    Try this test:
create a new blank presentation then drag and drop (do not copy and paste) four slides on to the navigator panel in the blank presentation
the Navigator panel is the view of slides in a column on the left hand side of the canvas.
check the settings are set for manual play as I described before:
Inspector  > Document > Document > Presentation Type:     change to Normal
select all the slides in the navigator then;    Inspector > Animate > Start Transition:     change to On Click
click the video on the slide then;     Inspector > Animate > Build In > build order button > change drop down menu to:  on click
if the presentation plays manually, drag and drop the remaining slides over.

  • Sleep problem with ext monitor

When the ext monitor is connected closing the lid causes does not put the computer to sleep, but into some kind of an unconscious mode (no pulsing light or fan), from which it won't wake. I have to push the PB for several secs and then wait a few more to push the PB again to reboot - usually successful. Any suggestions?

If you disconnect the external monitor, does the MacBook Pro act normally when it wakes from sleep?
Hook up the external monitor and try booting into the Safe Mode.  Shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • Upgrading to Leopard while using mirrored monitor

I am using a TV as my monitor for my macbook since the screen is cracked. I needed to upgrade to snow leopard... and while doing so the tv was no longer mirroring my laptop but rather an additional screen. I tried command f1 and all the other functions but nothing is working. How can i get it to mirror again? cause the software is still downloading and i cant see what i have to do next.

Only upgrade if your not in the middle of a project. Sometimes things don't go as smooth as they should. Also, backup your main drive and settings to another drive before upgrading, so if you need to, you can downgrade to where you were, (just a word of caution, learned from experience.)
Personally, I have not upgraded yet, due to some third party software that doesn't play nice with Leopard yet and that I depend on daily. As far as I can see Leopard works quit well with it's own Apple software products.
You will also loose OS 9 classic mode under Leopard, it isn't supported in Leopard.
If your wondering, I did upgrade and then almost immediately downgraded after my third party software stop working.

  • Will MBP 17 play in portrait mode on my ext monitor?

    Hi All,
Am wondering if my MacBookPro 17" (about 2 yrs old) will "play" in portrait mode on my ext monitor? Is it built in, or do I have to DL a utility, or what? I am a writer and it wld be nice to see a wholel page at a time, vs. wide, wide, wide.
    Thx.
    Duncan J.

Did you check System Preferences > Displays (with the external display attached and mirroring off, look at the preference pane _on the external display_.
See this linked image (although it's from Tiger, the preference should be there).

P.S, i dont remember the process that the adobe support walked me through when i installed it on my laptop, something to do w/ selecting "trial version", then something else, i cant remember.

  • FCP has stopped updating ext. monitor

    Hi--
Suddenly FCP has stopped showing color correction, etc. on my ext. monitor.
I've tried restarting FCP, and resetting the A/V prefs, to no avail.
    This is version 5.0.4.
    All My Best,
    Jeffrey

    One more stupid answer...
Let's make sure you are actually sliding the sliders on the clip that is active on the canvas!!!
    hahaha
If you were smart enough to check those other things... well -- Can't tell you HOW many times that has happened to me.
But yes, I didn't actually read your post... I read the title and scanned. You said no longer updating CC. This happens to me too.
Not sure why. I usually trash my preferences and restart etc. Generally fixes it. Not sure if it's a ram thing or what.

  • Problems waking MBP screen when connected to ext. monitor

Whenever the screen is closed and it goes to sleep (still connected to ext monitor) then its woken by opening the lid everything will default over to the ext. monitor and the MBP screen will be blank. Unpluging and repluging gets it back but then have to move the documents around again. Is there just a setting I'm missing for this? I've looked through all the system pref. No usb/BT keyboards, just a BT mouse and it gets disconnected on sleep.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

A Bluetooth device disconnect will often cause a separate and unwanted wake-up event. I'm guessing that might be happening here. After the lid goes down and the Mac sleeps, shortly after that the BT disconnect causes the Mac to wake again and, with the lid down, only the external screen is activated and hence all the windows jump to the external screen. Next time you wake by lifting the lid, you see all the windows have moved to the external display.
What I recommend trying is powering off the BT mouse prior to putting the Mac to sleep. You should get a message that the BT mouse has disconnected. Then close the lid on the MBP. See if that fixes the issue.

  • I upgraded to Mavericks and my iMac monitor goes black randomly, but my attached cinema monitor stays active. I can fix it by putting it to sleep and waking it up again. But often it happens immediately after.

I have a 30in cinema display attached to my iMac and the iMac screen randomly goes black while the cinema stays active. I can put it to sleep and log back in which fixes it, but often it happens again immediately after. Sometimes it happens so quickly I can't even finishing logging in! I'd like to know if this is a Mavericks issue and I will roll my machine back. Thank you!

Wanted to update you on my situation with this.
So far 8 hours have gone by and I have not had a screen blackout.
FIRST I did the Hardware Test. TWICE on the extended test, the instructions on the KB Article explain. It took almost 3 hours, but while the test was running, both times, my computer screen did not go black.
I did get an error message, both times. Different each time. I looked up both of the error messages on discussion boards. Lots of conflicting info
One good thread said my first error was that my hard drive was bad and would probably fail.
The next error message I researched said that a fan was bad or needed replacement.
(information comes from other folks on discussion boards, not from Apple or technician)
Not sure what exactly those 2 error messages indicate but I followed a thread where someone found a solution by doing the following. So far it's worked.
After Hardware Test I did a shutdown and an SMC resest. Unplugged computer power source from wall and computer for about 10 minutes.
Finally after a restart  I downloaded "SMC Fan Control" (CNET Downloads has a nice safe copy you can download)
There is a temperature monitor and from what I've read so far, keeping the CPU temperature under 50˚C is ideal. Making sure your fans and computer is in a well ventilated area/room too of course.
The SMC Fan Control helps you set your own speeds on the fans and so far everything has been going normal.

  • MBP not restoring screen after disconn. ext. monitor.

In SL. I was able to disconnect my external monitor from my MBP and it would automatically restore to it's default.
Meaning, the MBP's screen would be the main screen again. In Lion this isn't the case (atleast not for me).
In Lion even after disconnecting the MBP, it remains to be in secondary state which means I can't do a thing.
In order to work without the external monitor, I have to restart my MBP.
Is there any work around to solve this rather annoying glitch?
I find it to be annoying enough to consider reinstalling SL and loosing the iCloud capabilities.
PS. I'm making use of the hdmi port.

yes, of course, what I was trying to have you do is sort of reset it so it remembers how it should be when you don't have an external monitor plugged in. So In theory, I was trying to trick it to remember that if there are no displays connected externally that, it would revert back to the setting where you have just one display and it also has your dock, so on.
did you try the smc reset?? You are right, this isn't how Lion should work, and isn't how it works for me, so something isn't right with how it switches displays at the momment.
can you try doing this for us?
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
Note: Portable computers that have a battery you should not remove on your own include MacBook Pro (Early 2009) and later, all models of MacBook Air, and MacBook (Late 2009).
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

  • Can you WIRELESSLY connect a macbook pro to a monitor to have extra work space on a separate screen from your macbook? (not mirror, extra monitor/workspace)

Can you WIRELESSLY connect a macbook pro to a monitor to have extra work space on a separate screen from your macbook? (not mirror, extra monitor/workspace)
    It needs to be wireless.
I am not asking about mirroring, but as a second screen.
Apple tv communties said the Apple tv cannot do this, but maybe another type device can?

My thunderbolt port stopped working on my late 2011 MacBook Pro rendering my external monitor useless--or so I thought.
Mac Genius suggested using the Apple TV via AirPlay Display as a $100 solution. Took me all of 6 minutes to figure this out as there are no directions in the Apple TV box supporting this. But, it does work and I am now back in business.
PS. Don't set up with bluetooth--seems logical but you want to use AirPlay Display under Settings > Displays.
Also, I originally thought my external monitor stopped working because I upgraded the OS. This time, it was definitely a hardware issue and not software. It also fixed a known sound issue my monitor had with Macs. First time in my 15 years I've ever had a ViewSonic have issues with an Apple product, too. Thanfully, it is now fixed.
    Hope this helps.

My computer is asking me to close itunes when installing the upgrade. I think I already have. What do I need to do to close itunes after closing it?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
First, open Activity Monitor (it's in /Applications/Utilities) and kill "iTunes" and "iTunes Helper". Then, run the installer. If it doesn't work, restart your computer and install the update again, and if nothing works, start your computer in safe mode (holding the Shift key while your computer is starting) and install the update

  • Just added a 30 inch monitor and have a 23 inch flat screen. slow?

Just added a 30 inch monitor and have a 23 inch flat screen. I have 6 gigs of D RAM, and run Parallels which I give 2 gig's to. Since adding the 30 inch Apple monitor and upgraded video card the Mac is running slow. Anyone know why? Should I add 2 gigs more of memory?
    Thanks in advance!
    Mark

He's asking what are those things you are using, i.e., ...
What video card are you using?
What version of OSX are you using?
What model of mac pro are you using (e.g., 2010 Mac Pro is 5,1).
    And also,
    Try smc and pram reset.
And see if the monitor lites up if you boot in safe mode.
It is possible your monitor simply failed -- its power supply or something else.

1:  I accidentally ran iPhoto Library Upgrader on my Picture folder and now I have to right click on it to "show contents" instead of double clicking on it and looking at it in Finder.  I cannot figure out how to fix my Pictures Folder so that I can click on it and view it in Finder, when I double click on it Terminal opens up with this message  "Pictures - Bash 80x24"  and

It will not let me replace or delete the folder...  I got to my files and backed them up, but trying to avoid reinstalling my OS.
2:  When I try to Upgrade my Library.iPhoto file so I can open it in iPhoto it says I need to finish by opening in iPhoto, but then when I do, it tells me it first needs to be upgraded in the iPhoto Library Upgrader... Vicious circle.  Please, help!  Just trying to recover about 3 years worth of photos...

    Hi!  Thanks for responding!
I have iPhoto 9.5.1, I am on OS X Version 10.9.5 on a MacBook Pro with 2.66 GHz
My current "iPhoto Library" file is OK (I can open it with iPhoto), however I cannot access the old one from iPhoto 6 titled Library.iPhoto
I tried right clicking and choosing the application, it did not work.
"exactly how did you "I got to my files and backed them up"" - I showed the contents of my Pictures folder, and it opened up the folders in Finder and I copied them to an external hard drive.  In my Picture folder I have several folders of Photos plus the iPhoto Library files (old & current)
I do have old back ups, but they are from April, and I recently imported 5 months of photos from my iPhone, so the iPhoto Library I copied after showing contents is the one I need.
