Upgraded 16gb ram. Only using 4gb

Hi,
I have an iMac 27" Mac OS X 10.6.8. I upgraded the memory from 4gb to 16gb. After working on it I have noticed that the memory that is using within the activity monitor, it only uses 4gb. I'm usually using Pro Tools 8 LE for it, I have a lot of troubles with memory.
Any Ideas to start using the 16gb ram?
Thanks in advance

Install Sophos: https://discussions.apple.com/message/18316360#18316360
That is pure sarcasm by the way. Don't install Sophos.
What you are seeing is completely normal. Your iMac uses what it needs, and your usage indicates that it needs less than 25% of its available memory. If it needs more it will take more. 16 GB is enormous.
Enjoy your Mac.

Please tell me....i got MacBook Pro (15-inch, Early 2011) can i upgrade 16GB ram on it?

I heard somewhere he may be able to upgrade to 32GB of RAM if he wanted to, although Apple wouldn't recommend it, it is possible?

  • AE CS3 only uses 4gb ram

    Hi there,
I am actually using the AE CS3 version on a Windows 7 64 bit PC with 12 Gig of ram. But everytime I use AE, it says that it uses 4 gigabyte of ram only. That's kind of strange, as the OS uses the whole amount of ram.
Is there any solution to it or do I have to upgrade to CS4? Hope not...
    Thank you!

The information in that FAQ entry is still mostly valid for After Effects CS3, especially the important point: After Effects CS3 is a 32-bit application, so each process can only see and use a theoretical maximum of 4GB of RAM. However, with Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously multiprocesing, After Effects spawns additional processes that can each use its own few GB of RAM.
Here's the page in After Effects CS3 Help about the Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously multiprocessing feature:
    http://livedocs.adobe.com/en_US/AfterEffects/8.0/WS2FD05F13-66CB-47c1-9FD2-7CEE7EDF588F.ht ml
Don't be so quick to dismiss information about CS4 as being irrelevant to CS3 (and vice versa). Most things don't change from one version to the next, so information written for one version is usually still good for the next. (If you're ever unsure, you can use this decoder ring page to see what's changed from CS3 to CS4.)

  • 24GB RAM only using 16GB

Hi, I have the 970A-G46 mainboard.  It is running the AMD FX-8350.  I am using Win 7/64-bit.
I have had 8GB (2x4GB) of Crucial Ballistix Sport RAM, DDR3 PC3-12800, as such in the two blue slots:
    XMP-1600: 800 MHz, CAS 9/9/24/37, 1.50V
    It has been running fine.
I have added 16GB (2x8GB) of PNY RAM, same DDR3 PC3-12800, as such in the other two slots:
    XMP-1600: 800Mhz, CAS 9/9/27/40, 1.50V
My operating system says 24576 of RAM is installed, but only 16384 of RAM is available.
Is there a BIOS setting I need to change so that Windows will be able to use all 24GB?  I installed the extra so that I can do video editing.
If there is anything else I need to provide, please let me know!

Thanks for posting this Mizagorn.....this is very timely for me.
I realized I have two sticks of 16gb memory in my 760GM-p21 MOBO......I was considering changing to a motherboard that would support 32gb, but if that also means a windows change for me, I will old off (running Windows Home 64)......
Well, I'm glad you found it useful. I got a Windows 7 Professional upgrade.  I wish I had just bought that at the start, because buying Home Premium and then upgrading was much more expensive.  Doesn't really make sense to me, but that's Microsoft for you.
The mix of memory was not the problem. I've had mixed memory in other systems... the mainboard will just set settings to the least powerful stick.  If memory matches, it's better, but it's not *that* big of a deal.
Good luck on being able to upgrade soon.  More memory really does make a difference if you are video editing, running a whole bunch of programs, have multiple people signed in or something similar.

  • Cannot select photo events with iPhone anymore with new upgrade - can we only use the cloud now?

    Hello,
I used to be able to select events from iPhoto that I wanted to appear in my phone. I cannot use photo stream for various reasons. The last time I synced my iPhone it would not allow me to select any events at all, but only reverted to the recent photo stream ONLY. Which means that none of my old photos can now be found on my iPhone. I hate this - I want some of my old photos. Why can't I select my old events? Please help!

Thank you so much for your answer! Yes, this is my 1st time to the community too, again thank you! Okay, here's the sequence that 'may' help explain; 1st- My son got an Iphone 4 & wanted to buy songs, etc., so I added his phone to my Itunes acct..--he consequently signs on under my email address (my Apple ID) & my PW. No problem then, it had/has listed ex. Mom's Iphone & Son's Iphone (mine is a 4s, don't think that makes a difference- except in telling u that Siri doesn't work properly now either & refers to my son's name now instead of mine!) As far as I can tell, the real problems began with the ICloud settings on our Iphones--meaning the settings on 'where' to back our phone's- ICloud or to the Laptop (both phones back up to the same laptop.) It's so complicated I can hardly explain it, so sorry if I'm bouncing around! I did not mean to or rather it was not an intentional decision to use the same ICloud, however since we share the same comp. and Itunes account, and basically passwords--it somehow happened. I don't know how to undo this mess! Last night I went to ICloud.com & was able to sign on with my son's @me.com user ID & our Itunes PW (aka-Apple ID.) It really didn't do anything except show me Iphone features, ex. Contacts, Ibook, etc.. I did 'not' see a place where I could change any settings, like to possibly change his Apple ID, or pw...that's all I can think of to change? And even with that I'm not sure how to do that...he's 14, a minor--so he has to be under my settings to a degree. Don't mind at all having seperate ID's, but we do share "some" music and app's for example. Is any of this making sense or even partially explaining my problems? Thank you in advance!

  • Export Results-Not Enough Memory (1).  I need HELP with this please.  Using Windows 7 32-bit.  Intel i5 4690K CPU 16GB RAM 120 SSD and 1 TB harddrive.

Everytime I go to export a photo, I get an error.

    Using Windows 7 32-bit.  Intel i5 4690K CPU 16GB RAM 120 SSD and 1 TB harddrive.

Even though you have 16gb of ram installed, 32 bit Windows can only use 4gb of it so 12gb is wasted.  This is the reason you are getting not enough memory errors and is a known problem with Lightroom an 32 bit Windows during export.   You need to change to 64 bit Windows.

  • 16GB RAM

Just bought the new 27" Quad Core iMac with 2TB HD and 16 GB of RAM. I am definitely seeing a speed improvement over my 4 year old Mac Book Pro, but I'm not sure if it is using all of the RAM available.
A lot of the time I am rendering or exporting with Final Cut Pro, compressing files using Compressor and encoding Flash files with On2 Flix Pro, all at the same time. This was a chore for my old laptop and now things seem to be moving faster with the iMac, but how can I be sure that it is using all the RAM I purchased?
I know that FCP can only use 4GB as it is still 32 bit, but I was told that the other apps would be able to use the leftover RAM. Is Compressor considered part of FCP Studio and therefore sharing part of the 4GB?
Is the best way to check on the RAM use by opening the Activity Monitor and what exactly am I looking for in the Activity Monitor?
Thanks in advance for answering all my questions,
    Jeff

well, I don't know those apps, but normally if they are different apps they have a different "ram pool" so to speak, so they can use 4GB each.
but according to what activity monitor says, you are not even close to 16GB, so it shouldn't really matter.
you say it always says 3.63GB? Reboot your computer and see what it says right after the start and see how it evolves as you use your computer, I'm pretty sure it won't always say 3.63GB, but maybe that's just where your current usage maxes out?
but if the page outs are 0, you are fine, that means that the computer never needed to move RAM content to the hard drive

  • Can i use 4gb of ram after 10.6 upgrade on MA589LL?

Hello, I am new to Mac.
I have a late 2006 iMac (MA589LL) that I have upgraded to 3GB of RAM. It has 10.4.11 on it but i have 10.6 in the mail. The specs say that it is limited to 3GB of Ram but it also says that the hardware will support 2 x 2GB sticks but the OS will only use 3GB. I am assuming that this is due to 32 Bit OS. If I upgrade to 10.6 or even 10.7 will that give me the 64 Bit OS and allow me to utilize the full 4GB?
Thank for any help and suggestions to a new Mac user,

Here are the complete specs for your model:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/stats/imac-core-2-duo-2.16-20-inch-sp ecs.html
Upgrading to 10.6. or 10.7 will not change the fact that it will only address 3 GB; personally, I'd stay with 10.6 because Lion is somewhat of a memory hog and 3 GB will be stretching it - you will not be happy with the performance. From what I've read, yours can read 3.1 or 3.2 GB if you install 4 - I used to have the same (but 24") model and stayed with 3 GB. And that will not change by installing Lion.

I don't see any DDR3L on the page for the RAM that would fit your model -> http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Apple_MacBook_MacBook_Pro/Upgrade/DDR3_133 3MHz_SDRAM.
But the answer is that it doesn't really matter - just make certain to get 1333MHz.

You can leave the existing RAM in their current slots and add compatible modules in the empty slots. For best performance, add two of teh same size. Our 2010 iMac 21" shipped with 4GB RAM---two 2GB modules in two of the four slots. I added two 2GB modules to the empty slots and now have 8 GB RAM.
Be sure to order RAM from a trusted Mac-savvy RAM vendor. Some vendors thing a Mac is a hamburger. For over a decade I've bought all our Mac RAM (and we have 18 Macs in teh family!) from one vendor:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/iMac/2011/DDR3_21.5_27
The link is to the proper RAM for your Mac.
Crucial.com is also a trusted vendor.

  • Memory upgrade on the NB550D-11D - 4GB RAM are possible

To anyone who's thinking about a memory upgrade on the NB550D:
The NB550D supports up to 4GB of memory, not only 2GB as mentioned by Toshiba in their specifications.
A memory upgrade to 2GB is _only limited_ by the pre-installed Windows 7 Starter OS, not by the netbook itself.
I'm using Linux Mint 11 Katya, 64bit and my system is running perfectly well with a 4GB ram module. If you want to use full 4 GB ram support, get rid of the Win 7 Starter OS.
The specification for higher volume ram is DDR3 1333MHz PC3-10600 SO-Dimm. I've chosen one 4GB module by Corsair, due to the 30 years warranty Corsair offers.
It took me quite a while to find this out, hope this is going to be a help to everybody who's just as unsecure as I was how to upgrade the NB550D memory. Good luck. ;o)

    > A memory upgrade to 2GB is only limited by the pre-installed Windows 7 Starter OS, not by the netbook itself.
I can confirm this. Two days ago Ive installed own Win7 32bit Home Premium and upgraded my NB520 with 4GB RAM. 3GB are in usage now and notebook runs perfectly.
With original Win7 Starter version I have noticed annoying display behaviour while watching action movies. When the scene in the movie was without movement everything was ok but by action scenes some strange lines were shown on the screen.
Now after own OS installation everything works perfectly and Im so happy with my NB520.
I can just recommend it for everyday usage.
    By the way: I use 4GB SO-DIMM DDR3-1333Mhz PC3-10600

  • Can I upgrade my Macbook Pro to 16GB RAM

I am a Graphic Designer and use some very heavy bound software for rendering and running multiple memory munching applications everyday.
Lately my macbook pro has been increadibly slow. I have seen allot video on youtube of people upgrading their rams to 16GB. I was wondering of my mac can operate that too.
The upgrades I will be doing are:

    2x 8GB RAM
    - My only concern is the RAM size compatibilty. Please let me know if its viable. Also if theres any other upgrades I can do feel free to share. Thank you.

    16 GB*
    Details:
4 GB of RAM is installed as two 2 GB modules, no slots free. *Apple officially supports a maximum of 8 GB of RAM, but third-parties have determined that this model actually is capable of using up to 16 GB of RAM with two 8 GB memory modules. In the US (and many other countries), site sponsor Other World Computing sells memory -- as well as other upgrades -- for this MacBook Pro.

The link you posted is compatible RAM and from a reputable company. I bought my 2 X 8 GB modules from crucial when I upgraded my MBP RAM to 16 GB.
    Go with that kit.
Note that DDR3 1600 MHz RAM is the only type of RAM your machine takes.
