Upgraded and now get Kernel Panic
Upgraded tonight and immediately got Kernel Panic's and now cannot boot from disk or in safe mode. Please please help. This is why I didn't want to upgrade.
I've been running SL for over a year on my 24" iMac. SL isn't the issue; most likely, bad RAM.

Will any body outthere heppe me get out this freezes up panic kernel Darwin 9.2.1.
Thanks YouLooks like a RAM failure or maybe another hardware failure.
Can you take out the battery and with the charger connected start up? Same failure?
Have you tried the SMC reset and PRAM reset? do both twice. -
Freezing in sleep mode, and now constant "kernel panic"?
My Mac Pro (with Leopard) has been working fine, but then all of a sudden when I came home today I went to wake it up from sleep mode and I found it was frozen. I restarted it, and before I had a chance to do anything a screen that said "You need to restart your computer" came on, which I hear is called the kernel panic. I did that, even waited several minutes, but as soon as I turn it on it comes right back. I'm not able to do anything to fix the problem because it is within a minute of booting up that the screen comes back on. I added nothing new in the last day, updated last week and everything was working fine.
What can I do to fix this problem, if I have under a minute to actually use the computer to fix it...thank you!If necessary, you could try getting files off the MacPro using Firewire Target Disk Mode if it works...
although it sounds like the drive is gone.
If you have two Macs that are FireWire-equipped, you can connect them so that one of them appears as an external hard disk on the other. This is sometimes called Target Disk Mode.
To transfer files using FireWire:
Shut down the computer to be used as a disk. Leave the other computer on.
Connect the two computers with a FireWire cable.
Start up the computer to be used as a disk, then open System Preferences, click Startup Disk, and click Target Disk Mode. (Or, start it up while holding down the T key.)
A disk icon appears on the desktop of the other computer.
Transfer files by dragging them to and from the disk.
Eject the disk by dragging its icon to the Trash. (While you drag, the Trash icon changes to an Eject icon.)
On the computer you used as a disk, push the power button to shut it down, and then disconnect the FireWire cable.

Updated to Tiger and get kernel panics
Hi,
I updated my desktop G4 (quicksilver) to Tiger last week, and have suddenly started getting kernel panics. I am not sure what to do about it, other than trying to reinstall Tiger. It didn't happen the first few days of Tiger, so I am not sure it's the OS. Do I need to be worried about my drive? could i lose information with this?
I do have one bad hard drive inside the machine which crashed in November; I haven't removed it yet. Would removing that bad drive correct the issue? There is a 2nd drive in the machine that is fine and an external firewire drive that is now my main book drive.
Or could the panic be the result of peripherals, such as sound cards, MIDI gear, printer? or something like software? I use a lot of 3rd party software and have updated quite a few of them in the past week, since updating to Tiger. I did call Apple Care and they suggested removing all external devices and apps...way too much if I don't need to do it.
Help?
Thanks
Kat
G4 powermac Mac OS X (10.4.8) also have macbook intel - 10.4.8Wow -
What an incredible answer. I am posting the panic log here, but I remembered that I recently just plugged in my MIDI yamaha clavinova to my sound card, and that's when the panics began. Could be a coincidence, but I unplugged it to see if they stop.
I will also remove the bad drive. It crashed in November. Disk first aid was unable to repair it and the genius at the apple store told me that something physically broke inside the drive, so there is no salvation for it. I was able to recover most data before it all disappeared, luckily. I just haven't gotten around to removing it and reinstalling the original apple drive.

G4 powermac Mac OS X (10.2.x) -
I'm getting kernel panics each day as I shut down, the message of restarting by holding down the power button appears on the screen - it began about a month ago and. Do you have any ideas of how to solve the problem? I've copied the logs that I found for each kernel panic that still have the message logged. Please help if you can, I have read some of the other comments and perhaps it has something to do with my anti-virus software being on at start up. I have copied the log here. Any advice will be welcome.

Two experiments you can try.
1. Boot in safe mode and see if you can shut down normally. All thise additions won't be running in safe mode so this test would indicate it is one of them causing the problem.
2. Uninstall all the intego VirusBarrier stuff. That's my first guess and the troublemaker. -

If you use ZoneAlarm Extreme Security then disable Virtualization and reinstall Firefox.

I just did the recent upgrade and now I keep getting an error message when I try to open a book on my Kindle app, I have deregistered the app and reloaded and the same thing happens, does anyone know how to fix?
You are seeing the message because the new AirPort Extreme has some specific System Requirements:
http://www.apple.com/airport-extreme/specs/
Setup and Administration
iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 5 or later and AirPort Utility 1.3
Mac with OS X Lion v10.7.5 or later and AirPort Utility 6.3
AirPort Utility 5.6.1 in Snow Leopard may or may not work correctly with the new Extreme for all functions. As long as things are working OK for now, you can probably leave them "as is" and wait for another Mavericks update to fix some issues before you "upgrade".
If you have an iPhone or iPad, you could use that to administer any settings changes on the new Extreme. -

I did an upgrade and now i can't get the bookmarks back in Safari like they used to be. How can I get contacts back in the bookmarks. Also, why does Apple always change everything? Very frustrating.
Unforunately, not that I know of.

I'm sick and tired of Kernel Panics!
I can't deal with this machine anymore. I realize that I have a four year old macbook that isn't the world's fastest machine, but after four years, this thing should still be able to hang. Unfortunately, it can't. I'm getting kernel panics at the silliest of times, lately the offense seems to be that my screen saver DARES to turn on (and no, it's not a third party screensaver - it's a native MAC screensaver). My fan is ALWAYS running, it seems, and I'm getting CPU spikes all over the place. If it's not crashing when the screen saver is active, it's crashing because flash pushes the CPU usage too high. If it's not freaking out then, it's freaking out when the CPU decides to spike when running Ableton live 8.01 into a presonus firebox; the CPU spikes, the audio freezes up, the firebox loses its connection to the computer, and everything hangs for a minute or so.
I'm not running any insane 3rd party software or hacks, everything is up to date, I run cron jobs all the time to keep things fresh, I run Onyx and repair permissions all the time, my disk is in fine order, I'm running 10.5.8, and yet, this machine is turning into a freaking brick. I'm not an idiot, I know more than I need to know about computers to know that this thing should be a lot more stable than it is. It's never been dropped, never had water damage, never been mistreated.
I've been in and out of the genius bar bringing this issue up multiple times, having run memory tests and other barrages of tests both on my own at the apple store to test for issues, and no, nothing's been found, but this machine just seems to get worse and worse. Of course, now my applecare has run out, so I'm SOL anyway if anything hardware related really is wrong with this machine, which I still believe it is.
This machine started with 10.4 installed on it, and I updated to 10.5. There were no issues in the update.
The only thing that I can think of doing is reinstalling OS X, but I REALLY don't want to do that right now. I have too many projects I'm working on, I can't take the full day it'll take to reinstall EVERY single piece of software that I have. I know that I'll have to do a full clean reinstall, because doing an archive and reinstall will only carry over software problems, if there are any.
I realize the good things that come with a clean install, but like I say, I really, really don't have time for it right now, and I can't say when I will, being that this machine is how I make my living. So what am I supposed to do?

com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily 2.6I'm not running any insane 3rd party software or hacks, everything
is up to date, I run cron jobs all the time to keep things fresh, I run
Onyx and repair permissions all the time, my disk is in fine order,
I'm running 10.5.8, and yet, this machine is turning into a freaking
brick. I'm not an idiot, I know more than I need to know about
computers to know that this thing should be a lot more stable than
it is. It's never been dropped, never had water damage, never been
mistreated.
HP printer drivers (current crash). I guess that is not insane, but
then again, I always found the HP drivers to be annoying
But your March 3rd crash seems to be 'ScreenSaverEngin'.
Years and years ago, I know I had issues with Screen Savers.
So these days I run about as basic a screen saver as I can
("Computer Name"). I also got tired of the fancy stuff,
so the "Computer Name" screen saver is fine with me.
If the process/driver that crashes is always different, then Memory
is the most common cause, especially if there is 3rd party memory
installed (I have nothing against 3rd party memory, as I use it all
the time; it has just been a factor in may crash situations). And
Apple memory is not always innocent, but less frequently guilty
of failing.
Now if there have been zero memory changes in the 4 years, then
I would be less likely to single out any memory, and now I would
lump it in equally with the Motherboard failing.
System tests might not detect anything if the problem is environmentally
triggered, such as the unit becoming warm. When you take it to
an Apple Store, it will most likely have cooled down, and may take a
while to get to the warm failing state.
Oh yea. Do you plug in USB devices? I ask, because historically, the
second most common cause of repeated system crashes have been
caused by a failing USB device. Then again, that also tends to
include the USB driver in the list of kernel components at the time
of the crash.
The only thing that I can think of doing is reinstalling OS X, but I
REALLY don't want to do that right now. I have too many projects
I'm working on, I can't take the full day it'll take to reinstall EVERY
single piece of software that I have. I know that I'll have to do a
full clean reinstall, because doing an archive and reinstall will only
carry over software problems, if there are any.
I realize the good things that come with a clean install, but like I
say, I really, really don't have time for it right now, and I can't say
when I will, being that this machine is how I make my living. So
what am I supposed to do?
Since you are running Leopard, you can do an "Archive & Install"
which will leave your personal stuff alone, and just replace the
Operating System. -
I have received multiple kernel panics in the last few days on MBP (Mid-2009, Lion 10.7.4-fully updated). I have had some kernel panic problems before, but generally they either went away, or reinstalling Mac OSX fixed it (NOT an erase and install). I had one every time I tried to boot up last night, and out of the about seven times I tried to boot up my computer once I was able to log in before a kernel panic, I tried logging into recovery HD, that failed, tried safe boot, that failed, yeah. Here are the logs just for today...I finally managed to get in and it hasn't had a panic...yet. Any help is appreciated!!!

com.apple.iokit.IOACPIFamily 1.4I have a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010) exhibiting the same behavior. With a vanilla 10.7.4 image (and a new Recovery partition), it is fine for two to three days, and then the kernel panics start, and then increase in frequency. In each panic, /var/log/kernel.log reports: kernel (0): Previous Shutdown Cause: 3.
Running MRI (we are an authorized Apple shop) returns no hardware errors. Running Apple Service Diagnostic for 24 hours returns no hardware errors, leading us to think it was an underlying software error. Re-tested using a vanilla 10.6.8 image and got the same result.
Reading a Topher Kessler article on c|net suggests the problems may be either the battery or power adapter. Looking to corroborate that now . . .
Cheers,
Andy -
My new iMac 27" keeps getting Kernel Panics
I bought an iMac 27" with 32GB of RAM and the 500GB flash drive, is updated to date.
I installed Logic Pro X and some libraries, including some that uses a reFX eLicenser USB. I also use a small LPK25 AKAI keyboard.
I keep getting kernel panics, about 5 since two days ago, this is the last one:

Chat support suggested to uninstall Logic to see if the problem persists, but it isn't a viable solution because I need Logic for my work, and I already know almost for sure it's the source of the problem -
Quicksilver G4 wont finish startup - gets kernel panic - how to fix?
Recently acquired a G4 quicksilver - dual core 867Mhz (mirror door) - we managed to get it working for half an hour after we gave it some RAM and a hard drive (it came with none) before it froze. When we tried a restart we got the grey screen and a message which contained lots of Chinese symbols instructing you to power down the computer. Now we only get kernel panics. I've attached a pic of the panic in case any of you can decipher it. What's the next step?
Boot off your Apple Hardware Test Disc , then run the extended Apple Hardware Test. Your model would have a separate AHT CD.
Here's the list and downloads for AHT for some G4 models if you don't find yours, some G4s only have it on the Original Install Disc...

com.apple.driver.AppleBluetoothMultitouch 66.3The Kernal Panics had become so frequent that my iMac was becoming unusable. I do have a 2006 macBook that seemed to be behaving fine. I has all the same software except for the virus protection (the iMac has Intego VirusBarrier and the MacBook uses Symantec Antivirus). As has been noted in this discussion, I was beginning to suspect VirusBarrier might be the problem. But as indicated in my crash log (and noted here by several others) the Cisco VPN was being called out. Researched the VPN configuration that I was accessing and discovered that a new feature of the Anyconnect VPN software was a "web security" option that was not used on the VPN I was accessing. Before I switched virus protection, I uninstalled the VPN software and re-installed without the web security feature. It has been a week without kernal panics. I have had one crash that appeared to be related to Lotus Notes, but no kernal panics. For those of you wrestling with the same issue, may want to try this solution...

updated iTunes and now get an error message that the file iTunes Library.itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes. ??
hello!
i have a similiar problem:
i upgraded my mac from 10.6.8 to 10.7.something recently, but i did NOT update itunes, still running version 10.4.1. now i wanted to open itunes but it tells me, that my iTunes Library.itl was created by a newer version of iTunes - which i never used!
its annoying since i dont want to be forced to download a 720MB pckage of itunes every month - even more so, if the system start "lying" to me.
or is it another problem? anyone got the same? any solution? maybe an erratic prompt?
thanks, florian
