Upgraded but new itunes can't find library

I just upgraded to the new itunes 7.0.2, but none of my songs or playlists transferred over from the older itunes. Does anyone know how to get 7.0 to find my library of music?

Your playlists reside in the 'iTunes Library' file (more info here).
Is your library empty or does it only contain songs, but not the playlists?
In either case the 'iTunes Library' file might have been damaged, forcing iTunes to create a new one.
You can check this by opening HD/Users/Username/Music/iTunes and looking for a file called 'iTunes Library (damaged)'.
Unfortunately, such a file cannot be repaired and reverting to iTunes 7.0.0 won't help either.
There is a way to go back to the pre-iTunes 7 situation. However, all changes you made during the use of an iTunes 7.0.x version will be lost.
Open the 'Previous iTunes Libraries' folder in HD/Users/Username/Music/iTunes and locate the latest 'iTunes Library yyyy-mm-dd' file.
Create a copy of it and rename it to 'iTunes Library'. Then put it at HD/Users/Username/Music/iTunes, replacing the one that's already there.
When running iTunes, it will recognize the iTunes 6 format and start 'determining gapless playback' again.
After a while you will have your library back (including playlist) at the moment just before upgrading to iTunes 7.
If you want to try iTunes 7.0.0 or 7.0.1, download it here.
Before installing an older version, trash the iTunes application and the 'iTunesX.pkg' file (in HD/Library/Receipts).
Hope this helps.

  • New Itunes can not find library file

After comuper crash and new hard drive, I downloaded current version of Itunes. Error message is can not find itunes Library.itl. Any suggestions?

Did you restore your iTunes folder and all its contents from a backup?  The library.itl file contains all the references itunes needs to where your media files are located, playlists etc.  Without the old copy and without the media files you are basically starting brand new.

  • I installed the upgrade and now itunes can't find my library and doesn't recognize my devices. Using Windows 7. Any help?

Help!!! I installed the 10.5 update and now itunes can't find my library or recognize my devices. Running on Windows 7.

For moving your iTunes library, I recommend this method...
Assuming you use the iTunes default settings where iTunes copied added items to your iTunes folder and organizes your library (meaning - everything is all self contained in the iTunes folder), then all you have to do is drag & drop your iTunes folder (not just the iTunes Music folder you find inside the iTunes folder) to the external drive and copy the entire thing.

If you are just testing, then close iTunes after you verify it works, and restart iTunes again with the same instructions and point it back to your internal drive (original) location.

  • New PC can't find library

I bought a new PC, and iTunes can't find my library on the external drive.  I copied my iTunes folder to the PC, and iTunes still can't find it.  When I open iTunes, it shows only 6 songs.

Hey, diesel vdub, I do thank you for helping me.  I, too, gave up on me for a couple of days, but now I believe my problem is solved.  Before I got the new computer, I transferred all my files to my external drive, so I thought that's where my iTunes library was.  Turns out, it was still on my old computer, so I transferred it to my external, and when I chose a library (and found it now!), it automatically transferred it to my new computer.  Whew!  Anyway, thanks for your help, and I'm sorry to be such a techno-dunce.

  • Unable to Upgrade to new itunes-can't update music on ipods

When I try to upgrade my windows32 to the new 10.6 itunes after it runs through the calculations I receive the following message:
There is a problem with this Windows Installer Package.
A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected.
Contact your support personnel or package vendor.
I have defragged and checked/repaired errors and tried again with the same result.
I am unable to make changes to ipods because it states it needs the upgraded itunes.
    Thank you.

I suspect you missed out a step in the transfer process somewhere that was designed to avoid this situation...
The exclamation mark shows if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout,or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions.
Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes .
Ctrl-click on an empty check box will check them all...

  • Transferred songs but new computer can't find file

I transferred my music library with my mini to a new computer but now the new computer says it cannot find my any of my songs because "the original file cannot be found". And yet it looks like it transferred, the new library has all 609 songs. Any thoughts on how to get this opened up.

    From the link I posted:

  • Installed shuffle software on new computer - can't find library

I installed my shuffle software on my new computer at my new workplace. My library is blank and somehow I've managed to delete the songs from the shuffle. Do I need to get my files transferred from my old work in order to see my library and reload my shuffle?

A shuffle can only be associated with one library at a time. You will need to get your files from your old computer transferred over to the new computer.

  • Moved my iTunes library to my new 2TB time capsule, now iTunes can't find the Time Capsule.

Had my iTunes library on my older 1TB Time Capsule. Just bought a 2TB Time Capsule. Moved all the music from the old to the new. But, iTunes tells me now it can't find the server. I've checked the location of the library on the iTunes preferences, to point iTunes to my server. I keep getting an error message that iTunes can't find my server. I've already added the folder on the server to my login preferences, like it was with the older Time Capsule.
I did everything exactly as before but now iTunes can't find my Time Capsule.
Should I have just pointed the login to the server and not the exact folder? I've been working on the solution for an hour now.. Please, can someone here help me?

  • After 11.1.4, iTunes can't find my iPhone

Hey guys, today, after the 11.1.4 iTunes update, I connected my iPhone 5 and the iTunes don't open it. My PC opens up the iPhone, but the iTunes can't find it. What I can do for it? P.S.: I use Windows 8.
    Thanks!

I seem to have sorted it. Looks like it's to do with the updater, not iTunes itself. Uninstall iTunes and everything Apple related (Apple Mobile Device Support, Bonjour, etc). Reboot your machine!.. Go and get a new iTunes package http://apple.com/itunes and install it fresh.
    Worked fine for me.

  • Itunes can't find purchased tv shows

I purchased some comedy central stand up episodes and it was playing fine on itunes and my ipod but now itunes can not find the files. I have not deleted the files and do not know where they are. I have looked in My Music/itunes/itunes music/tv shows/comedy central with no results. I have had this problem before with some music videos and had to purchase them again. Is there anything I can do to retrieve them without having to purchase them again?

Yes, funny, I had to restore my ipod, then it all downloaded. Just a quirk i guess. Thanks.

Don't you just love changes in interfaces?
I found the answer to my question.
When you attach a device (iPhone, iPad) to your Mac, in iTunes 12 in appears as a tiny icon in the second "row" of the iTunes display. Click the icon and the familiar iTunes display for the device appears. From there, on the Summary screen, you can see the dates of the backups of the device (iCloud and backup to the computer). You can also use the button to backup to the computer.

  • Bought new HD and now iTunes can't find my music

I just bought a new FW HD, WD My Passport. I copied all of my music from my old USB 2.0 HD to the new one and now iTunes can't find all the songs. It'll play probably 40 or 50 songs but the rest of them show the "!" next to the song name. Right now the only thing I can do to show iTunes where the songs are without having to rebuild my playlists is to manually point it to each individual song but since but that would mean pointing it to over 14,000 songs......... I DID go in to the preferences and changed the folder location to the new HD and it still won't find the files. But strangely enough, when I have the old HD plugged in, as well as the new one, it'll play everything just fine, checking the preferences shows that iTunes is pointed to the new folder but "Get Info" on individual tracks shows iTunes finding the file in the old HD, unplug old HD and files cannot be found. Why doesn't the **** program look where I want it to and what do I have to do to fix it? I know my description here isn't crystal clear so I'll gladly answer any question to help clear it up a little. ANY help is very much appreciated as I do not want to spend the next 3 weeks teaching iTunes one song at a time. Thank you.

  • Move all my music to another folder but Itunes can't find the files!

I have all my music on my desktop in small folders for each artist.
But now i don't have room anymore, because i have to much music.
So i want to move it all in to a folder called "Music". But when i do that
Itunes can't find the files, and i have to search for each file, to find the new location instead of the desktop. How do i move my music more easily? So i don't have to synchronize it all in again, with the right album covers and that..
    Please, need some help here!

You need to open your preferences file in iTunes and click on advance then select the location of where you put the folder.  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527

  • ITunes can't find any of my songs now that I upgraded to 7.6

Did the upgrade last night and when I opened it today to play music, all my songs are marked with a "!" and iTunes can't find them. I suspect I may need to reimport them but then I'll have duplicates which I'll need to go through and delete. Is there another way? Thanks.

When you create a smart playlist there is a checkbox so you can select only checked songs. So you could make a playlist easily by matching the rules of date added. If you sort your itunes music folder by date then you can see the start and end dates you will need for the playlist.
Once done, check its all alright, and then edit the smartlist (right-click the name in the left bar) and un-check live updating so it won't automatically change itself if you check/un-check more.
