Upgraded from 512 MB (unified) RAM to 2 1GB sticks... numerous issues.

Hello - I've had my Macbook Pro for about a year and I finally decided to upgrade my RAM. I bought 2 1GB sticks of this RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820146126
and since installation I have had numerous problems with several applications, from World of Warcraft to Camino.
Applications have quit unexpectedly, and several times I have received a message that "you need to restart your computer," which is only removable with a hard reset.
I believe my computer's issues may have something to do with the fact that one of my memory bays has been vacant for quite a while, because I tried installing only 1 1GB stick in the bottom bay, and have had no serious issues since.
Any help? I would like to be able to fully utilize both memory slots.
Thanks.
-Andrew

Hi Unifin,
Welcome to macbook forum.
try to repair permission

Try to reset PMU.

Also try to put one memory at a time on each bay and make sure it properly seated, from there you might find out which module that "defect" and you can ask for replacement.
Good Luck.

  • Using IMovie, will it matter if I upgrade from 512 megs of Ram to 1 gig?

I've upgraded one G3, and am thinking of increasing the Ram on this second computer. Will that significantly increase performance? It'd cost about $60 for the upgrade from 512 to 1 gig of RAM. Thanks. David

    David,
Generally speaking, more memory is helpful with OSX, especially if using heavy duty apps. If you would like to check how your 512MB is doing, restart your Pismo to clear out the swap files and memory. Now open Activity Monitor in Utilities, select System Memory at the bottom, then start using your 'book. If free memory is used up pretty quickly plus you start seeing 'Page outs' (hits to virtual memory) start climbing into the thousands, more memory is warranted.
I have 2GB in my MBP and just using Safari, Mail, and a few games, I can watch my free memory slowly decline over several days, mostly due to Safari I believe. At the moment, I have 500MB free using just the aforementioned apps.

  • Upgrading from 512 to 1.5 GB RAM?

Currently I have a Macbook Pro with just 512 MB of RAM. I was planning on buying this RAM from newegg:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/CustratingReview.asp?Item=N82E16820231066
Is it ok to have both a 1 GB and a 512 MB RAM stick in the computer at once, or should I have two of the same size RAM?

For best RAM performance (Dual channel mode) it's ideal to have two sticks of the same size; 2x512MB or 2x1GB and then you get about 6% benefit.
However, the performance gain is small compared to having more RAM available so, 1.5GB is better than 1GB for things like Aperture or if using Rosetta.

  • Upgrading from 12gb to 24gb ram. Is it worth it?

    Hey all,
I've got After Effects CS5 (The whole Production Premium actually) along with a i7 930, 12gb ram, GTS 250 1gb, 3 WD Black HDs, and things just seem bogged down in AE as well as switching to Premiere then obviously using Dynamic link. I've got 3 processors at work with 2gb each in the MP settings and the rest of the ram / processors for other applications. I'm trying not to starve the system or used cores of ram as suggested. I've also setup my HDs the way Adobe has suggested with program on 1 HD, cache/scratch on another, and output on another.
Of course each person uses AE differently. But my work is 720p max or less usually working with 3D space, particle effects, and so on. Clips are 30 seconds or so max.
With all that background out of the way, would I see a nice performance boost by doubling my ram to 24gb? I would want to leave say 8gb ram for other apps, and then have 2-3gb per core for After Effects (whereever that leaves me). Would this be worth it? Again, things seem very slow. I feel like my ram preview should be faster and switching from AE to Premiere just lags big time. And yes, I've decreased ram previews res, size, framerate, but I hopefully don't have to have as much sacrifice in these areas if I have more ram.
This is the ram BTW I was thinking of getting:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231357
Any thoughts or experiences after upgrading to 24gb would be greatly appreciated.

    > Is there any noticable difference with memory that has a faster clock
speeds or less latency values, or is it all pretty much the same for
    After Effects?
I haven't done a lot of comparative tests.
There is no one generalization that applies to speed with After Effects. There are too many variables to give simple answers.
At the risk of stating the obvious, faster things are better; slower things are worse.
If the speed of getting data to and from RAM is the bottleneck, then faster RAM will be better.

  • Satellite L670D won't upgrade from 6gb to 8gb RAM

When I first got my L670 I upgraded the RAM to 6gb by adding a 4gb module to the supplied 2gb. Everything has worked well for a year., but now I want to upgrade to the maximum 8gb. I bought another 4gb module to replace the 2gb.
However, the machine will not even address the BIOS unless the 2gb module is in the first bay. It will work as a 6gb machine with either 4gb module, and as a 2gb machine, but will not accept either of the 4 gb modules in the first bay or both 4gb modules together.
Anyone got any ideas about this?

According notebook specification you can use 4GB DDR3-1066 with part number PA3677U-1M4G.

We do need to know the precise model number as different dv7s max at 8 or 16 gigs. Generally, most people have no need to add memory beyond 8 gigs. What makes you think you need to do this? You might want to consider a solid state drive instead. Your laptop holds 2 hard drives and you can move the original into the second slot and use an SSD for booting Windows.

Hello folks, I wonder if anyone can help me, this is driving me up the wall.
I've recently upgraded my database from 11.2.0.1 to 11.2.0.2 on a test database on Linux, using the DBUA.
I then tested the rollback by running the $ORACLE_SID_restore.sh script created during the initial upgrade process.
This seemed to go ok. Then I started noticing that when I logged in as sysdba it would tell me I was connected to an idle instance:

Hello Sybrand - thanks for the reply.
I think I may have solved the problem. After seeing the 'connected to an idle instance' message, I tried startup (something I should have done sooner!).
This gave me an ORA-01102 Cannot mount database in Exclusive mode error. Looking into it, I found this thread:
    http://www.orafaq.com/forum/t/40030/0/
after which, I discovered that there were two lk[$ORACLE_SID] files, one in each of the ORACLE_HOME/dbs directories (pre and post upgrade folders).
    So, I:
    1. removed the lk[ORACLE_SID] file from the 11.2.0.2 folder (i.e. the version of Oracle I was downgrading).
    2. Did a ps -ef | grep smon, and found 2 instances of the same db running.
    3. Killed all db processes: kill -9 <pid>.
    4. Restarted the database.
So far this seems to have worked. I'll close this thread tomorrow if the issue doesn't reappear, as this error took a little while to manifest itself.
    Thanks,
    Ray

  • Upgrading from OS 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard

Hello, I've heard mixed reviews from people at the Apple store to people on the street whether it's possible to upgrade directly from 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard. Below are my specs, and I'd love to hear a second opinion from someone!
    Model Name: Mac Pro
    Model Identifier: MacPro1,1
    Processor Name: Dual-Core Intel Xeon
    Processor Speed: 3 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 2
    Total Number Of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per processor): 4 MB
    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 1.33 GHz
    Boot ROM Version: MP11.005C.B08
    SMC Version: 1.7f10

You should be able to upgrade the OS X to Snow Leopard with the less costly upgrade DVD
from Apple; that won't give you the newer iLife, or iWorks, but it would be a full install disc.
The computer should see an upgrade in RAM, too; 2GB probably is minimal, and this can be
a concern if you also have a jam-packed hard disk drive and no working free space for the
system or applications to use the OS X's automatic Virtual Memory, based on available space.
An upgrade from Tiger 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard will invite issues and problems from third-party
applications not written to run in the later OS X version; you may have to buy/upgrade them, too.

Anyway, the upgrade by itself on a new or 'secure erased' HDD may work just fine.
The hardware upgrade suggested (RAM, larger hard disk drive) would help. Also,
if there are any pending Firmware updates available, be sure to install them, too.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Can not upgrade from Panther 10.3.9 to Tiger 10.4

I have a PMG4 AGP 1.4 ghz (upgrade from OWC) 2 GB ram and three SCSI hard drives 147/147/40 (upgrades from OWC).
I upgraded to Tiger 10.4 from Panther about six months ago. And the upgrade never worked. After the upgrade for Tiger, the screen would look gray with the Apple logo and the spinning icon, then it would remain gray but the Apple logo will change to a circle with a diagonal line across it and it will stay that way forever.
So I been stuck with Panther ever since. (My iMac-G4 Video Special Edition did take the upgrade very well). I called OWC and they said that their drives were tested for Tiger and didn‘t have any problems. (how about the processor upgrade?)
I also took the computer to Apple store for advise, and one of their techs told me that the hard drive could be the problem.
So last night I decided to try it again but on the other drive (the one I‘m using as a starup disk with panther 10.3.9). Same thing.
By doing the same thing it tells me that the hard drives are the problem.
Please help because I really don‘t know what to do of this.
    Thanks,
    Oscar

You might try removing third party hard ware. Specifically, the SCSI drives. Get the systme back to original configuration with only keyboard and mouse and give it a go.

I have recently upgraded from XP to Vista on my Qosmio F20 and have issues. It appears I have lost the ability to change screen resolutions, adjust the volume , brightness etc. Basically I have lost the functions of the laptop. I have also tried updating the BIOS but get the following error message "BiOS updated is not supported OS - Unsupported OS or service pack installed.
This is also making the machine very slow.

Do you have some questions now, or you wrote just a report about your Vista experience on Qosmio F20?
The fact is that Toshiba does not support Vista on this notebook model and because of that you will never have full operating Vista (including Toshiba tools and utilities). For supported notebooks Toshiba has offered special Vista supporting BIOS but for your notebook such BIOS update does not exist.
    Sorry! :(

  • Upgraded to 1.25 Gigs RAM from 512 MB-- notice some HEAT

Hi folks. I just upgraded my 12" G4 PowerBook (1.33 GHz) from 512 MB to 1.25 GB of RAM by adding a 1 Gig card. The first card I bought was a 3rd party brand and it was faulty, but the company was good and sent out a replacement.. the Samsung (same as used by Apple) arrived quickly.
My question is this: Does it make any sense that I would notice a bit more heat production with the 1 Gig card in there? It's possible that it's only happening because I'm using Lightroom, more of a memory hog than other programs I've used previously. Or maybe it always gets warm like this but I don't always notice it as much when I haven't changed anything.
Wanting to run Lightroom was initially the main reason I wanted more RAM, BTW.
    Thanks for your input.
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.6)   1.33 GHz, 1.25 GB RAM

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Some heat may be possible just because the components are more dense. I would note the following:
    1. Heat of laptops is normal to a point:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=30612
    2. You can use the hardware test disk that came with your machine to run an extended test and see if it detects anything wrong. Does not mean the RAM is good or bad if it detects nothing. But if it does detect something wrong, then it is.
    3. I've seen Blue and White G3 RAM go bad, and overheat so that it is too hot to touch. So any RAM can go bad at anytime, and even high quality RAM can too. Try replacing the RAM if you are seeing behavior with the machine that would not be considered normal under an erase and install (backup your data first), and it seems to happen when the heat gets more. Make sure when you get RAM, it is too spec:
    http://www.info.apple.com/support/applespec.html
And lifetime warranty RAM at that straight from the manufacturer.
    4. The 15" Powerbooks of the 1.25 Ghz generation have been known to have issues with one RAM slot. I know Apple started servicing newer 15" models due to RAM issues:
    http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n303173
Not sure if the same issue has been seen on the 1.33 Ghz 12".
    Good luck!
