Upgraded hard drive, but Home folder didn't get bigger.

I upgraded to a 500gb hard drive. I imaged the old drive directly to the new one, so it's a carbon copy. Everything is working great, but I realized that my home folder is still only 60gb. I have file vault turned on, and I can't turn it off because it needs 60gb of free space in the home folder to be able to do so, and my 60gb of space in my home folder is completely full.
Is there a way to expand my home folder to utilize the full 500gb of space without turning File Vault off? or another way of turning it off that I don't know about?

this is most bizarre. it should not be doing this. regardless, it IS doing this so we need to deal with it somehow. I suggest trying to resize the sparse image from terminal without turning filevault off.
make a new admin account. log out of your current account and log into the new admin account. open Terminal and enter the following command (copy and paste please)
sudo hdiutil resize -size 400GB /users/Chris/Chris.sparseimage
you'll have to enter your admin password (which you won't see) that's normal. after that you'll have to enter the password for your main account (the one with the filevault on). if the command returns no errors log back into your main account and see what maximal size it reports for the home directory. it should be 400GB.

  • How do I Rename Mac Hard Drive with Home Folder Only?

    Hello,
I have a Macbook Pro with an SSD which has OSX Snow Leopard and my Applications, and the other hard drive has my Home Folder. I replaced the optical drive with the SSD.
The other hard drive has the standard name of 'Macintosh HD'. I need to change it to something without spaces in order to get some developer software to work (i.e., it can't have spaces in the workspace name, and now that my Home folder is on a drive that doesn't have OSX, it refers to it as '/Volumes/Macintosh HD/.../...'
I ran into a disaster by simply changing the 'Macintosh HD' name to 'MacintoshHD' - It prevented me from logging in and I had to use the OSX Install disk to use the command line to rename the hard drive back to 'Macintosh HD'. My guess is because my account was referencing a home folder location that no longer existed.
My question is how can I rename my hard drive with my Home Folder? Can I change the hard drive name, and then immediately change my Account to reference the new hard drive name (and thus the new location of my home folder), and then reboot? Will this work if I do this in this order? Or is there another way to handle this entirely?
I'm very hesitant to try this again as I don't want to have to go back and use the OSX install disk - my SSD took the place of the optical drive and I have to go and take it out, put it back in...etc.
    Any help is appreciated.

I don't have a setup to test this, but you might try the following:
Create a second "normal" admin account with its home folder on the boot drive, then log out of your regular account and log into the new one. From there you could rename the large hard drive, then go to System Preferences>Accounts, select the first account, then right-click>Advanced options to change its home directory path to match the new HD name. That way you're not changing the home folder path "in mid-air."
It's probably a good idea to keep a tiny "self-contained" admin account on the boot drive anyway, so you don't get locked out in the event of future trouble accessing the large disk.

  • Upgrading Hard drive but cant find DVD's

I need to upgrade my hard drive to something larger, but I can not find my original dvd's that came with my imac. Is there something I can do? I did just upgrade to snow leopard and have that dvd but I was not sure if I can do a clean install with a new hard drive.
    Thanks

You can do a new install on a blank hard drive with the Snow Leopard disk. Or you can temporarily mount the new hard drive in an external case or use an adapter such as the NewerTech adapter, clone your current drive to the new unit using Carbon Copy Cloner, Super Duper or a similar utility, then mount the new drive in your iMac. Note that Mac cloning utilities may not work on a Windows partition; you'll probably have to clone that separately.

  • I used a Disk Warrior to rebuild my G4. When loading the program it wouldn't SU with the repair disc so I selected the Disc Warrior as my SU disk and repaired my hard drive but now I can't get the G4 to SU with anything but the repair disc. What do I do?

I used a Disc Warrior repair disc to rebuild by G4 Power Mac hard drive. It wouldn't
startup using the disc and the C key so I selected the Warrior as my startup disc, started up, repaired the disc and now I can't get the computer to startup on it's hard drive. It will only startup on the repair disc.  What do I do to get back to normal?

Press the Option key at startup and select the hard disk.

  • New Hard Drive Different Root Folder Names BUT Rest is the Same

I moved all my files to a new hard drive but preserved folder structure and filenames.  Please tell me how to remap all 60,000 pictures in the catalog.  I did this manually in PSE 3 using access but they know use SQlite.

There has been another change than changing to sqlite : the drive is now identified not only with the letter drive, but with the drive serial number. So you must first find a sqlite utility to update the database. I am using Sqlite Manager, an add-on to Firefox. Photodrawken has recommended another one, I am confident he will guide you.
Once you have that utility, you'll have to find the new drive serial number.
From the DOS command line, type:
    Vol X:
X being the new drive letter
You get the serial in hex mode.
Then from the sqlite utility, you have to edit the volume_table table,
and replace the old letter and serial number by the new ones.
(You'll have to type the serial number in decimal, not hex.)
    Safety note:
I would first work on a catalog copy.
Just copy the whole folder containing the catalog to a new location, and use it in 'custom location'.
You can find the catalog database location with the menu help/system info.
    It's something like catalog.pse10db.

  • Need to replace failing hard drive but I don't have RnR discs

The hard drive has started to fail on my brand new T500 with WIn7 Pro pre-installed. I have not had time to create RnR discs. Lenovo support says they are ready to ship a new hard drive but there is a problem getting the RnR discs put together with the drive for me. When the drive first started to fail, I tried to create the RnR DVDs but it seemed to be going nowhere.  I got 1 DVD created that I was told to label "Final SP". What is that?  There is next to no information available describing the process, but I'd like to take another crack at it in case there is a major delay in Lenovo replacing my drive and providing RnR discs.  Any idea how long it should take and how many DVDs? Any suggestions??
    Thanks.
    Solved!

OK. I took another look and I think I found what I need to create the Rescue discs... don't know how I missed it the first time around.  I will give it a shot.

If you subscribed to iTunes match the songs are kept in icloud. If you didn't but you did save the actual iTunes library folder which should include the music, video, etc.  you should be able to just drag this file back to your machine in the same place and when you open iTunes it will give you a chance to identify the iTunes library folder.
You can test this to find out if you saved the media files or not and don't need to attach your nano to do it.
You are correct that once you connect the nano it will clear the existing files from it and sync it with the new iTunes library.
If you don't have the media files i'm not sure if/how to get them back on a windows ipod.  I have everything backed up regularly because of the horror stories I have seen & heard.

  • Song on my hard drive but not in iTunes music folder

    Actually, I have two questions.
First - there is a song that I can do a search and find on my hard drive but it is not listed in iTunes. How do I get it into iTunes?
Secondly, I moved my library to an external hard drive then moved it back to C drive. (Didn't like the hard drive I took it back and got a different brand.) However, all my music had an exclamation mark beside it. So I manually clicked on the exclamation mark located the song and clicked OK. The stupid thing I did was click on any exclamation mark and OK'ed moving a song that was not the one with the exclamation mark. Now I have lots of songs, for instance, in Purchased that were from a CD etc. A lot of my music in not where it was originally. Stupid I know, but is there a way to put the songs back where they were??
    Thanks for your help.

Take a "missing" file and *Get Info.* When iTunes asks to locate the file click cancel. One the Summary tab will be a line that says Location: file://<some path>. Now compare that path with the current location of the file. If you are lucky it should be obvious what you need to do to put that file, and all the others, back at their original paths, e.g. rename or move a particular folder.

    Did you update to 10.9.3?
If you did then update to iTunes 11.2.1.
That is the fix for that problem.

  • How can I import my library that is saved on a  external hard drive but it's not saved on the iTunes media folder?

I need to restore my computer to it's factory settings but I don't want to loose my playlists and my library (windows). I can copy any file from the computer because it's in good working order. All my music it's on a external hard drive, but there's lots of media files that I don't want to sync but need to keep! Any way to do that!?
    Best Regards

I think that I didn't explain my self correctly, My iTunes media it's not consolidated. May I consolidate the media on a external drive (X:\). ?
Yes. But consolidate to X:\iTunes\iTunes Media.
The why I'm asking is because the music library (176gb) is way more than the computer drive (C:\). Remember that all the media is on a external hard drive (J:\)
The steps I gave earlier will work to copy the whole library onto the new drive, in the correct layout for future ease of use.

    Which iBook do you have?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1772?viewlocale=en_US
Which version of the OS is installed, and which version are you trying to install?
You could try starting up with Startup Manager and see if it will allow you to select the OS X install disc as the startup disk. If so, maybe you can proceed from there. I would recommend repairing the hard drive first since you are evidently having a bit of a problem with it.

Hi, Michelle. Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
Have you tried resetting the SMC? The SMC (System Management Controller) has control over the charging function, so resetting it may help.

  • LR 5 my external hard drive no longer appears as a hard drive but as a folder under "Volumes"

I am running LR 5 on a MacBook pro and my external hard drive no longer appears as a hard drive but as a folder under "Volumes". will this affect my ability to search and store in this external hard drive?  How can I get it back to normal?

I just started having the same problem, oddly enough with a LaCie 500GB D2 Quadra external. Had it connected via FW800 then suddenly it won't appear in the Finder.
It shows up as an "Unknown Device" in the System Profiler under the FireWire Bus.
I do need the data on it so which solution is easier?
Replace the housing? Or am I better off calling LaCie and using the warrenty?
    Thanks,
