Upgraded itunes now XP SP3 computer continually reboots even in safe mode

I don't understand how a software program can be written by a leading-edge professional company and cause a computer's operating system to crash. I have Windows XP, 32-bit, SP3. I plugged my iPhone 4S into my computer for the first time to upload some songs from itunes. iTunes stated that I must update iTunes to work with the iPhone. Since I have had trouble every single time I have updated iTunes, I considered not updating, but I figured having songs in my iPhone was something that was worth having to possibly recreate my iTunes library for once again, since the library had been corrupted by every previous iTunes upgrade. So I chose to upgrade iTunes. Well, the last thing I saw my computer display was that iTunes upgrade was complete and now I would have to reboot my computer. The first reboot presented me with the "something occurred the last time windows started" screen where I could choose to start windows normally, which is odd because there had been no problem with the last reboot. I selected "start windows normally". Very quickly I was presented with some kind of blue error screen that quickly disappeared and the computer automatically restarted itself. I selected "use last known good configuration" the second time around. Same thing, very quick blue error screen that there is not enough time to read one sentence followed by automatic restart. Same thing when I selected start in safe mode. I have a suspicion that this is some kind of purposeful programming on Apple's part to make me as a Windows user think Windows is unstable and a poor product so I will go out and buy a Mac. Well, no, unless anyone has any suggestions for me to recover by Apple's poorly written iTunes software, I will just reload Windows, reload the latest version of iTunes for the final time. The next time iTunes requires me to update to use one of their new products, I will return the new product to the store and find another product to take its place. I would appreciate any suggestions any other users have. I am pretty disgusted right now.

I'm having a similar issue. I can play my videos in quicktime 7.74 but not in iTunes version 11.1.3.8

Just in case we're dealing with file/disk damage here, try running a disk check over your C drive.

Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or use chkdsk /r (depending on which way you decide to go about doing this). You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup. The scan should take quite a while ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, can you delete the SCInfo folder now?

TS1717 I just installed the newest version of iTunes and it will not open, not even in safe mode. Anyone have any ideas?

My dad just got a new laptop that should be beyond capable of running iTunes. He installed it, tried to run it and it wouldn't open. I uninstalled it, re-downloaded it and tried to run it and it's a no go for me as well. Tried to run a repair and nothing. Tried to open it in safe mode and nothing. Does anyone have any ideas what might be gumming it up? His computer has a 1.5 gig Quad core, 4 Gig of Ram, is running on 64bit Windows 7 that is fully updated as of this morning and iTunes is doing jack squat Please help!

You can try to disable the Java Quick starter and the Java Console extension in the Control Panel > Java.
Control Panel > Java > Advanced tab > Miscellaneous >Java Quick Starter (disable)
You can also disable the Java plugin in Firefox: Tools > Add-ons > Plugins

Just updated to Itunes 11.0.2 (recent one) in Windows 8 and now it will not launch (not even in safe Mode)

I see in the task manager several itunes process are running but that is about it. Anyone else having this provlem?

You need to reinstall as the App is missing key support frameworks.
To re-install iPhoto
1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5: Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows: In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
/var/db/receipts/
2c: on 10.7 they're at
/private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store or have a Recent Mac you can find it in your Purchases List.

I changed Java settings and now Firefox crashes as it opens, even in safe mode; how can I fix this?

I was trying to change settings to access the comments section of Slate.com. Right or wrong, I changed a Java setting from -1 to 2. The setting was in about:config and I believe it involved some sort of max. As I cannot open anything, I am not sure.
When I made the change, firefox crashed immediately, Every time I have tried to reopen, even in safe mode, it immediately crashes again and will not reopen.

Sorry you are having problems.
For future reference. Those of us that mess directly with about:config soon learn how to recover from mistakes and what it is sensible to backup. Occasionally backing up your entire profile for instance can be useful and would have probably given you a quick solution of copying over the file from that backup.

Ok on to the subject of trying to get Firefox back as it was:
Find your profile and the file ''prefs.js'' and rename that. (The renamed file is a potentially useful backup.) Firefox is then forced to regenerate the file and will reset your preferences to the default. You can then re open and use Firefox. Next try to get it back to normal.
Trying to manually edit the file ''prefs.js'' is normally a bad idea. However if it is a single pref change it may be possible to directly edit the prefs.js file (whilst Firefox is closed) to get everything back to how it was before . You have the renamed file to work with. Probably best to test all this out in a new additional profile then you only break additional test profiles not working profiles essential to Firefox.

In updating FF, message says to restart to complete previous upgrade. I reboot, with same message. Attempted to uninstall. Same message, even in Safe Mode.

I tried to update Firefox and repeatedly get this message: "Your computer must be restarted to complete a previous upgrade of Firefox. Do you want to reboot now? " If I click no, nothing happens. If I click yes, it reboots, and I get the same message all over again. I have tried to uninstall the program and get the same message, even in Safe Mode. I tried to start with a previous system configuration, but the computer would not give me any previous configuration dates. I am using XP, and I deleted Internet Explorer, so I cannot access the Internet on that computer. I have tried to install the update by downloading the upgrade on a different computer and transfer it on a flash drive, but I got the same results. If I go to Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs, it says I have Firefox Version 13.0.1. For approximately 6 months previous to this incident, I have been getting a message when I load Firefox, that says that it could not install an attempted update. If I clicked okay, at least it would still run the old version. Now it won't even do that.

Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.

Uninstall your current Firefox version, if possible, to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.

Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.

It should be installed automatically if you install iTunes, but I guess when you installed iTunes you didn't have Firefox. Just reinstall iTunes and it should work OK (your iTunes library will not be affected)

I downloaded "MFInstall.exe" to view image. Firefox 'restarted' as per instructions - and now f/fox does not open at all - not even in safe mode.

I was on a genealogy site using Firefox. I was asked to download and install " MFInstall.exe " which I did. The final instructions were: Firefox will restart and you will be able to continue.
Firefox closed (two windows), and will not open. I have access on quicklaunch (Vista) which has no response to clicking.
I still have the icon in the start menu - right=clicking at first gave me the option to 'start in safe mode' (with no response). Now clicking the icon there does not show this anymore.
I tried to 'run as admin' with no reponse.
I have found the MFInstall. exe file in my download folder. I will delete it if you think that will help.
I have CC cleaner which doesn't find it when I ask (I guess 'cause it's inside F/Fox?)

G'day. I'm visiting on my Firefox browser - Yay. Thought I'd update this. After I wrote this last night, (with IE browser) the confirmation e-mail's link wouldn't even work.
I deleted the offending program. I used CC Cleaner to run through the computer. Still no go. I went to bed with AVG scanning everything.
I woke to find AVG had done it's work, finding 2 problems and fixed. Still no access to mozilla.
I shut down whole computer (intending to start in safe mode). Got distracted and missed the bootup prompt. Logged on anyway, so I'd have something to tell the 'help' line here.
Woo hoo! I must have done something right, because here I am, via the link in last night's email.
The offending program was via 'Ancestry . com'. I'm off to tell them now.

ITunes does not respond when opening, but works in safe mode

So over the last two days or so, my ITunes (Latest version 11.1.4.) on MacBook Pro opens fine but then as soon as I click whatever, it gets stuck on the spinning wheel. I have now read that you can open it in Safe Mode by shift-option-command and click on iTunes on the desktop, which works fine, but is not the ultimate solution.
Would you please have any suggestions as to what I can do to fix this?

b noir, just to confirm - the "Quartz Composer Visualizer.bundle" is working very well on my Mavericks MBP with 11.1.4. Only the Music Visualizers bundles, that need iTunes to run 32bit mode, will no longer run in iTunes 11.1.4., e.g. the iVisualize bundle and the visualizers "Be Composed", etc.
Perhaps is something in the iTunes Visualizer folder, that uses quartz filters requiring advanced features of the graphics card, and therefore disabled in Safe Mode.

Reset firefox button does not appear in Troubleshooting information. Not even in safe mode. Every time I shut down computer firefox loses my profile.

As stated above, firefox loses my profile every time I restart the computor. I have created new profiles and changed the location and changed it back again to no avail. I now want to just restart firefox in default mode but the default button does not appear, not even in safe mode.

Yes. Sorry, I should have mentioned that there have been several reboots involved during the troubleshooting.
I am running Firefox in an admin level account in this case - so, there shouldn't be any permission issues there.
I have tried shutting down both the desktop firewall software, and the anti-virus, and the problem still persists exactly as described. (Obviously, I disconnected the system when I did that [smile].)
All other software on the system that I have tried, interacts with the file dialog just fine ... so, I don't think it is anything central like some corruption associated with the file dialog itself.
As I said, it is most perplexing.

Some Firefox issues can be resolved by downloading a new Firefox installer from Mozilla.com, then closing Firefox, deleting the Firefox application folder (program files) and reinstalling Firefox. If this does not help, or if you would rather completely remove Firefox and start over instead of completing all the troubleshooting steps, follow these steps:
1. Download the latest official version of Firefox from Mozilla.com.
* You should avoid unofficial download sites that bundle Firefox with other software such as the Google Toolbar.
2. If you wish to retain your current profile, you should make a backup copy of it. See Backing up your information for instructions.

The likely problem is use of certain Oracle etc software, the developer Oracle being aware of the problem and working on a fix. Meanwhile there is a registry hack as a potential workaround, or the simpler workaround of downgrading temporarily to firefox 3.6.23.
