Upgraded KDE, Now Doesn't Start

I have just done a pacman --sync kde and upgraded KDE to current. Now it won't start! When I kick off KDE via the startkde command, I get a small popup window that says
Could not start KDEINIT - check your installation
Has anyone run into this before and know a way around it? My KDE is fully current with what is in the Arch archives (yes, I did do a "pacman --sync --refresh" before updating KDE).
For now, I am stuck! Any and all suggestions welcome!

Been there, done that, no joy. Same result. I am guessing some unhandled dependency is biting me. I am going to start backtracking through KDEINIT itself and see if I can figure out where it is dying.
It is sad that we have to do stuff like this to get things to work. This sort of thing will continue to limit the reach of Linux until we get it sorted out. Possibly this is why one of my least favorite Linux distrox, Ubuntu, is becoming so popular that Dell is starting to sell it... it is fairly well contained and for the most part, just works.
Of course, as you may have seen from some of my other posts, Ubuntu behaves positively Microsoft-like in terms of its ability to "play nice" with other OS' on the same machine. I installed Ubuntu as an alternate boot on the same machine as my Arch, just to see what all the fuss was about. One of the Ubuntu updates I applied wandered on to my Arch partition and "updated" a few things there as well, totally trashing my X server and then my XFCE4 (discovered that when I finally - thanks to some kind folks here on these forums - got X working again). Hence, I really don't like Ubuntu anymore!
I've tried a lot of distros, but Arch continues to shine as the best of the bunch. Now, if I could just get KDE going again... :-)

Latest upgrade of itunes doesn't start up more than once per boot.

Since the latest upgrade (can't tell what version without rebooting my laptop), iTunes will only start up once per uptime session. If I plug in my iPod Touch, it will start up automatically just once, or if I start by selecting the Start Menu item to run iTunes, it will only start up once. After iTunes is closed, I must reboot the PC if I want to use iTunes. This is with Win7, but it takes me back to the early days of Win95 or ME - ahhh what memories! I'm glad that I can look at that as being in the past, but when it happens right now, I'm not particularly glad.
I can see that the iTunes Helper is running, and even iTunes.exe is running, but there's no program window visible, no icon in the tray... it's not running as far as I can see, and it's not very useful in that state. I can't see any way other than this of letting Apple know that they've trashed the new version of iTunes as far as my computer is concerned. It's just rather unhandy to have to reboot each time after I've finished using iTUnes. As a friend of mine used to say, there's nothing so unhandy as a handy thing that doesn't work...

And that's true for the latest version as well - no change. The process never goes away after I close iTunes - it just hangs around slowly getting bigger and bigger memory-wise. Plug in my iPod Touch, and nothing happens - no synch, nothing. If I kill off the process, then plug in the iPod, iTunes does start up, but it just hangs there, and never becomes truly running and useful. So, I don't know what "fix" broke my iTunes, but it's still requiring a reboot to get it working after it's been used once and closed. At least Win 7 boots pretty quickly on my laptop...

[SOLVED]Compiz Fusion doesn't start!

Hello,
After an upgrade Compiz Fusion doesn't start. Normally I start Compiz Fusion with the command:
fusion-icon
But now it gives on a terminal the following output:

* Error: glxinfo not installed!
I searched with Yaourt on "glxinfo", but there is no package called "glxinfo".
Could someone help?

Xfce doesn't start, gnome too

I've recently bougth an Athlon 64 3000+ and I want to use a 64bit distro to run calculus programs as Octave (never used calculus programs under linux, but I presume that they are faster than other appz on win/linux 32bit)
I've installed base system through CD, and with Pacman I downloaded nvidia drivers and configured X11 by XF86Config file, i think that there are no errors here.
I read italian/english tutorials for install xfce4-svn, and with pacman I do all... but when I type startx... It seems to start but few second later:

Try this from MacFixIt as well:
In the case of drive directory damage or problems with permissions, the solution is usually to use Apple's Disk Utility to repair the disk. Of course, you won't be able to perform this operation normally (simply launching the Disk Utility application, located in Applications/Utilities, and initiating a disk repair) if your system will not startup. So two options exist:
* Insert your Mac OS X 10.4.x (Tiger) media (DVD or CD) and restart the computer while holding down the "C" key. Once the computer has booted from the installation disc, select "Utilities" from the menubar and open Disk Utility. Repair the disk, then quit Disk Utility and restart your system.
* Alternatively, you can repair the disk while booted in single user mode if you do not have access to a retail Mac OS X 10.4.x (Tiger) DVD/CD. To startup in single user mode, hold down the "Command" and "S" keys simultaneously at startup. Once properly booted, type the command fsck at the prompt. Repeat these process until no errors appear.

I tried to reinstall dependencies of xorg-server and mesa. And then I even went through with the whole system update which I postponed for a few weeks because of the KDE changes. Sadly even the whole system update didn't help.
Is it possible that any old config files can cause this?
EDIT:
I tried kernel parameter "nouveau.modeset=0" but it didn't help.

Ok, I guess I solved it by reinstalling xf86-video-nouveau.
Funny business! Why did the upgrade to xorg-server 1.17.1 force me to remove it when it is still needed??
And why does that lead to mysterious error messages and segfault??
I discovered it accidentally when I stumbled upon the fact that the package was still installed on my newer x86-64 Arch installation despite being on xorg-server 1.17.1.

Mac OS X 10.4.8 doesn't start after upgrade to 10.4.10

I've upgraded my Mac OS X 10.4.8 to 10.4.10 and after restart it doesn't start anymore I also have BootCamp installed and Windows boots now even if I choose to start Mac OS. I've tried boot it in safe and verbose mode but computer boots Windows instead (
How could I run Mac OS? Maybe it's possible to return to the "before update" state?

To return to the before state you need to boot from your Tiger installer disk. Run Disk Utilities and Repair Disk. Then choose to do an Archive & Install.

Try restarting Firefox, the one time page(s) after starting a new release should disappear. Actually this last time with 8.0 they did not come up for me.
If that doesn't work then bring up '''about:config''' and place the url of the page into the filter. Right-click on anything that comes up and use "Reset".

MySQL doesn't start after upgrade to 10.6.8

After installing the 10.6.8 upgrade on my Mac Mini Server (first using Software Update, then again after manually downloading and running the update), MySQL doesn't start. Well, it seems it starts alright, but then immediately quits. From the mysql log:

but it should contain at least 481 error messages.
Check that the above file is the right version for this program!

Since I need MySQL to run my Apache server, Apache doesn't start either. Which means all of my sites on that box are now down.
Suggestions for fixing on the MySQL site suggest reinstalling MySQL 5.0.92. But I'm hesitant to do so.
Other suggestions are reinstalling 10.6.X from scratch, upgrading until 10.6.7 and then restore from Time Machine from the last backup before the upgrade. Not looking forward to that either.
Does anybody have some other suggestions?

The usual trigger is a skewed version between the files here, though that would be unexpected. (Similar errors have cropped up on rare occasions with previous Mac OS X Server releases; something went off the rails here.)
First, make a backup of the file or (better) boot the DVD and make a backup of the whole disk. That's your path back if something goes wrong here.
Try re-downloading and re-loading the 10.6.8 combo update (the combo update, and not the delta update), as a potential brute-force fix.
Failing that, I'd then look to fetch a copy of the same-version kit from the MySQL server (as what is running on 10.6.8 server), and extract this specific file from the MySQL kit, and try replacing (just) that file.

Jdeveloper doesn't start after Weblogic upgrade.

I had Jdeveloper Studio 11.1.1.3 and Weblogic 10.3.3 and everything was working fine. I upgraded WLS to 10.3.4. Now, Jdeveloper doesn't start. jdeveloper.exe doesn't give any error. When using JDeveloper, the integrated WLS and ADF version are tied to the JDeveloper version - you cannot upgrade individual bits and bobs like that. There is no problem, by the way, having multiple versions of JDeveloper installed at the same time. I currently have 11.1.1.3 and 11.1.1.4 installed (different directories, of course) with no issues. In fact, I used to have many, many more releases installed, but I decided to clean up ;)

KDE 4.1: after a normal upgrade, kde doesn't work anymore

I been using KDE 4.1 for some couple weeks and everything was fine since yesterday when as I usual do, I upgraded the system. That seems the main reason because now kdm still working, I selected KDE session to start kde but then nothing else happens! My screen is full of some squares black & white lines pixels. No taskbar, no icons... no desktop at all.
My first reaction was ok, let's just delete all the old config .kde and .kde4 and start a fresh KDE but no luck . Then I decided to reinstall pacman -S kde and delete again all the config, reboot... nothing. Here is the list of packets since this problem appears:

Did a pacman -Syu. After the updates, I rebooted.
I don't use KDM - just type startx at the command line.
KDE appears to start with appearing icons showing progress but
then ends with the KDE Crash Handler.
A Fatal Error Occurred.
" The application Plasma Workspace (plasma) crashed and caused the signal 11
(SIGSEVG)
I then end up with a blank screen with mouse cursor. The screen is not frozen - can move mouse.
I do CTRL+ALT+Backspace to get back to the CLI.

Have you tried a reset ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider if it appears), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot. A possible cause is security software (firewall,anti-virus) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

I've been having the same issue, but have just discovered something on my own that hasn't been pointed out in any of the forums I've visited. In what I thought would be a vain attempt to help myself, I went to System Preferences, Users & Groups, and then clicked on Login Items. I discovered that one of the Items that was listed to open automatically upon login was iTunes Helper and that there was an exclamation point beside it indicating that it was incompatible. I simply deleted that item and now I don't have the situation you described and my wireless is connected. Hope this helps!
