Upgraded ram on arch64 to 4GB, but only 3Gb is recognized
I just added a 2Gb stick of ram to my work system and the bios recognizes all 4Gb but Arch only sees 3Gb. I've booted multiple live 64bit cd's and the problem persists accross all of them. I'm clueless as to what may be causing this. ANY help would be appreciated, if I can't get to use all 4 gigs, then a simple explanation would be helpful.

The PC does support 4Gb of ram, although it's the max it supports, it does support it. I have read quite a bit about other people having this issue with other systems and I've gone all through my bios looking for SOME sort of option that I can at least play around with, but there's nothing there. I've also upgraded the bios thinking that "maybe" it could be something with that. The video card I'm using is a Nvidia Quadro NVS 420 512 Mb. I've tried disabling IndirectMemoryAccess in my xorg.conf thinking that might be messing with it somehow, but it did nothing. I just tried removing the video card altogether and running w/ the onboard video and alas! I recovered 512Mb, which I would be pleased with, but when I add the card back, the available ram disappears again. So now my question is this... Why would the kernel be reserving 512Mb of system ram for a card that has 512Mb of ram built in (at the same time not visibly acknowledging the fact that it exists)? Is this maybe a kernel option that I can pass at boot to disable it from reserving the system ram?
I'm sorry about the lack of the bbcode tags btw, I'm a first timer to the forums (however an arch user for some time now).

I want to upgrade from snow leopard to Mavericks, but only Yosemite is available!!
How do I upgrade snow leopard to Mavericks on one of my older macbooks? I note that Mavericks is no longer available via the App store, only Yosemite, and I do not want the latter. My latest macbooks all have Mavericks pre-installed, and I want parity on all.
OS X 10.9 Mavericks is no longer an available, downloadable OS version.
You can choose to decide and download the free OS X 10.10 Yosemite OR pay to download either OS X 10.7 Lion or OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion.
Before embarking on a major OS upgrade, it would be wise, advisable and very prudent if you backup your current system to an external connected and Mac formatted Flash drive OR externally connected USB, Thunderbolt or FireWire 800, Mac formatted hard drive. Then, use either OS X Time Machine app to backup your entire system to the external drive OR purchase, install and use a data cloning app, like CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper, to make an exact and bootable copy (clone) of your entire Mac's internal hard drive. This step is really needed in case something goes wrong with the install of the new OS or you simply do not like the new OS, you have a very easy way/procedure to return your Mac to its former working state.
Then, determine if your Mac meets ALL minimum system install requirements.

If you run any older Mac software from the earlier PowerPC Macs, then none of this software will work with the newer OS X versions (10.7 and onward). OS X Snow Leopard had a magical and invisible PowerPC emulation application, called Rosetta, that worked seamlessly in the background that still allowed older PowerPC coded software to still operate in a Intel CPU Mac.
The use of Rosetta ended with OS X Snow Leopard as the Rosetta application was licensed to Apple, from a software company called Transitive, which got bought out, I believe, by IBM and Appe could no longer secure their rights to continue to use Rosetta in later versions of OS X.
So, you would need to check to see if you have software on your Mac that maybe older than, say, 2006 or older.

If you have any commercial antivirus installed and/or hard drive cleaning apps installed on your Mac, like MacKeeper, CleanMyMac, TuneUpMyMac, MacCleanse, etc. now would be a good time to completely uninstall these apps by doing a Google search to learn how to properly uninstall these types of apps.
These types of apps will only cause your Mac issues later after the install of the new OS X version and you will have to completely uninstall these types of apps later.
Once you have determined all of this, you should be able to find the latest versions of OS X by clicking on the Mac App Store icon in the OS X Dock and then login to the Mac App Store using your Apple ID and password and if you purchased a download code, input that code.
You can then begin the download and installation process of installing the newer versions of OS X from the Mac App Store.

Upgrading RAM from 2GB to 4GB on newer iMac - No Dice..?
Hello, I have an aluminum 2.4 Core Duo iMac (7,1), with 2GBs of RAM and want to upgrade it to 4GBs. Bought (2) 2GB sticks from Apple and they popped in fine. Then, I got a black screen when I restarted, would not boot. So I swapped out one of the new 2GB sticks with one of the older 1GB sticks, worked perfect, 3GBs registered. Then I shut down and tried it with the other new 2GB stick, and that also worked fine, registering 3GBs of RAM.
I reset the PRAM under both configurations and the iMac still will not recognize the 4GBs of RAM, as it will not boot up.
Any suggestions?

Very strange as the iMac 7,1 can actually support up to 6GB of RAM.

You wrote that you have a Core Duo, but the 7,1 is a Core 2 Duo (big difference).
I suspect that one or both of the new SODIMMs is/are bad.
1. Check to make sure that each 2GB stick is the correct speed. The label will either say: 5300DDR or 667MHz. Any other speed will not work.
2. You bought the memory from Apple, so march into your nearest Apple Store and get them to make it work.
3. Return the SODIMMs to Apple and get your money back and buy 6GB from OWC (see link above) for $40 less than you paid for 4GB from Apple.

Upgraded RAM MBP 2010 Boot good but won't wake up!
I orderd 8 gig's of RAM from Apple. Installed it per the instructions. Now, the MBP with Lion boots up and runs fine from off, the activity monitor aknowledges the 8 gig's. Runs well.
When I close it and then open it back up, the screen stays black and the sleep light goes out. Also, sometimes it won't boot, the light blinks and it makes a beeping noise over and over until I do a hard shutdown. Also, a couple of times, I was using it and the graphics went totally screwy and were blinking and whatnot until I did a hard shut down.
Any idea's? Can I return the memory (a shame because it is better with it when it works).

17-inch, Mid 2010I experienced the same issue once on my late 08 Macbook Uni when I upgraded to 8GB. What I did might not apply to you but it's worth a try.
When I heard a lot of beeps on boot with nothing showing on the screen, I shut it down and opened the back and took the RAM that I installed off and slowly put it back in and made sure it was seated right.
After I've done that, everything worked fine for me.

It says 8.00 GB (2.99GB usable).
Please tell me this laptop can handle more than 3 GB of RAM. I thought paperwork said it would handle 8 GB... does the Win 7 32 bit OS matter in this situation?

every since i've updated my itunes to the current version i can only fit about 260 songs on my ipod mini when previously i could fit 1000. could someone please help me?! has this happened to anyone else?
Bear in mind that Apple quotes the number of songs you are able to store on any iPod by using the AAC format at a bitrate setting of 128kbps and for a 4 minute song.

Look in iTunes under edit/preferences/advanced/importing. What does it say in settings and import using? You may have the import settings and bitrate set wrong. You need to compress your music using either mp3 or aac. If you see AIFF, WAV or Apple Lossless then those formats are going to take way more space than mp3 or aac, especially the first 2 which are raw uncompressed formats.

On the RAM issue, I fully agree with what Etresoft has written. I have just visited various sites, including OWC, Mactracker and iFixit and your Mac seems to have the Penryn processor. It will address 6GB of RAM which is more than enough for your use.
Where I differ from him, is Lion. The last big cat which I liked was probably Snow Leopard, and thereafter now Yosemite. There has been a lot of successes with your generation migrating to Yosemite, but with 6GB of RAM. Admittedly there were also problems for some, but I have observed even more successes even after initial problems. Mostly these problems were caused by adware or crapware installations. (Thank you Etresoft for a wonderful utility!)
Your iMac also has a SATA interface for a 3GB SSD, which is good enough. We have a Mac here with the same interface, still with a normal conventional stock HD running Yosemite, but only 4GB of RAM and it is running fine.
Of course the newer technology processors, faster RAM, PCI SSD, greater bandwidth on the newer Macs perform much better. But as I am on the older side, (ha ha), some of the 'vintage' Macs are still my favourites to use for certain tasks. Like using 9.09 for doing certain things and then converting the results afterwards for completion!
But, once again, it is your decision and only you can decide as you yourself knows your own circumstances better. Weigh up the options, considering what Etresoft has pointed out vs what Yosemite offers ito continuous support, security and features. There are a lot of your type of iMacs out there, and some of the users spoke about feeling like having a new Mac. There were others, who were wailing though. You could of course, also follow the advice of a test installation on an external and testdrive it, or wait for the release of 10.10.2 which I read somewhere is eminently close?

I have a MS-7253 with 4gb ram recently installed on it but in bios memory check state it only shows 312something KB (3.2GB) and BIOS is the latest one.
According to MSI's site, this motherboard is supporting upto 4gb. I've turned off the on board vga as well and my vga card is an nvidia geforce 8400GM.
the funny part is windows 7 recognize the whole 4gb but it says I only can use 2.8gb of it.

I have Toshiba satellite C55-A-19N with Windows 7 32-bit. It has 4 GB of installed memory, but only 2,39 is usable.
Bios is the last.
I can not find anywhere in the system the ability to change it.
My desktop with core i5-2500K can see 3.29Gb from 4Gb RAM, why toshiba cant see it?The shared part depends on the RAM amount which is installed.
The notebook description and the NVIDIA GeForce 710M details says this:
Video card: up next to 3787 MB with 4 GB system memory installed
and up to 4,095 MB with 6 GB of system memory (64-bit Windows operating system only).
So the shared part seems to be bigger than 300MB.

open msconfig using search
in msconfig click on boot
next inside boot click on advanced options
In boot advanced options click on maximum memory and increase the value
then click OK. Next click apply in msconfig and then restart your pc -
Satellite Pro A200 - Shows only 3GB instead 4GB RAM

2 years ago I got a Satellite Pro A200 as a business notebook and it runs with XP SP2, later with SP3. With 2 GB it shows 2 GB of memory in Windows - and I know it has a Radeon 7500 with 256MB of individual graphic memory, and it has no shared memory.
I upgraded it to 4 GB, but Windows shows exactly 3 GB. BIOS shows 4 GB and the ATI system monitor shows 4 GB. I know that 4 GB is not possible in XP 32 bit, only on Windows 2003 R2 32 bit or Vista - but on desktop systems I have seen values between 3.3 and 3.7 GB.
So where is the memory? It looks like a bug - the memory chips have both 2 GB I have verified this. Because it is a company notebook I can't just upgrade to XP 64 bit :-(
In the BIOS are no options - first I thought it's the graphic card, but mine has independant graphics with own memory so the computer comes up with 2048 MB or 4096 after the upgrade.

First of all 32bit OS (no matter if its XP, Win 2003 R2, Vista or Win 7) will not recognize 4GB RAM but only 3.2GB (and not 3.7GB)
I have no idea where you looked for available RAM but you should run DXDIAG in RUN.
Then you should get some details and also the available RAM.
Secondly the graphic card supports Local cache (256MB) and HyperMemory.
HyperMemory of the graphic card depends on the available main RAM memory.
For example the unit supports 1024MB RAM (1GB) then the hyper memory would be 256MB this part of RAM would be shared with graphic card!
This is the reason why the only 3GB are shown...

It doesn't matter which slot you put it in. If you put it in the bottom slot, you won't have to remove it first if you decide to add a second one later. But why on earth would you choose not to use both slots now, when you have modules to put in both? 5GB of RAM is better than 4GB. -
Upgrading RAM on TouchSmart 610 beyond 4GB

Just tried to upgrade my HP TS 610 beyond 4GB.
It has 2 sodimms installed, 2GB each, PC10666.
I tried putting 2 extra PC10666 sodimms (DDR3 obviously)
It booted up - but windows only showed 4GB.
I ran CPU-Z, and interestingly, it shows all 4 slots occuped - and 8GB total RAM. So the chipset sees it, but seems like the bios is limiting it somewhat.
Went back to HP Bios, under system info - shows only 4GB, with only 2 out of the 4 slots filled - in single channel mode.
I played with all combintation of the memory, and can get it only to 4GB, dual channel. It can't see the full 8GB for some odd reason.
The memory inserted is 100% working, have tested it on other systems, they are also identical in pairs.
Couldn't make it see 6GB either.
Any ideas?Hi,

Click Start ,
Type msconfig in the Search programs and files box, and then click msconfig in the Programs list.
In the System Configuration window, click Advanced options on the Boot tab.
Click to clear the Maximum memory check box, and then click OK.
Restart the computer.
