Upgraded softeware now the phone no longer works

I upgraded my iphone to the new operqating software and now the phone will no longer work. The computer does not recognize it and all I get on the phone is a itunes symbol and a picture of a usb cord. I have tried reseting the phone and I continualy get the same thing.
Any Ideas??????

Did you perhaps try to upgrade while airplane mode was on? If you did, disconnect your iPhone from your computer, then slide the emergency call switch and follow the prompt to disable airplane mode. Press the home button, connect your iPhone back to your computer and allow activation to take place.

I have no idea what may have caused your MacBook to stop working, but from your description it kind of sounds like it may have started before you ran Software Update and installed the new Apps. Just the general slow feeling and bugginess is what tips me off. You said that you weren't sure if you had closed all open windows, that doesn't matter if the computer restarts itself. It automatically closes all other open applications when restarting.
As to your data being retrievable, if when you take it in they do a fresh install of the OS, then no, it will not be unless you want to pay several thousand dollars to a software retrieval company.
I am glad to hear that you have taken into the Apple Store to get it fixed, and that you have all of your purchased music backed up to your iPod. You should be able to just transfer it all back to iTunes once you get your computer back should it be necessary.
As a side note, the proper place for this topic would probably in the MacBook forums, not iTunes since there is no evidence that iTunes started the issue.

One complication is that I have renamed my user since the last time I backed up.

I was trying to sync and update my phone with ITunes, about 5 minutes into the process everything stopped. Now the phone does not work, it will not turn on or off, the screen of the phone shows the Apple Logo and a straight line. ITunes seems to not "see" the phone. Suggestions??

I encrypted my backup, however the password no longer works. I know for sure that i have the right password as i wrote it down. I also checked my Keychain and it had the same password. Is there anyway i can unlock my backup?

I tried to update my iTunes software on my iPhone today and plugged it into my laptop. Before the process was complete, I received an error message saying I had to "restore" my iPhone before it would work with iTunes. Even more importantly, and troublesome, is the fact that now my phone won't even work at all. I can't turn the iPhone on, and all the screen shows is the iTunes icon with a picture of the white power cord. Can someone advise if there is a way to update the software without restoring my iPhone, which will cause me to lose everything on the phone (much of which I have not backed up yet)? Last, is my stuff already backed up by iCloud? I believe I have sellected that option on my phone, but honestly, have never really understood what iCloud is or does. Well, you have your answer perhaps as to why the phone was being sold in the first place - rather than being a registered developer, the previous owner probably downloaded and installed an illegal copy of iOS 7 beta on the phone and it has now bricked the phone. Some people did this and of course they could not wait to get their hands on iOS 7, but now it has been released officially, everybody moans.
The only thing you can do is try resetting the phone again. Connect it to iTunes and install iOS 7.0.2 and restore it as new and see if that works. This might help the phone but will not preserve data.
If it still won't work, then I suggest that you confront the previous owner of the phone and return it for a full refund and start again, but this time buy the phone from a legitimate source.

I tried to update the newer version of IOS on my Iphone 4S. After the update an Itunes icon and the adapter appeared on my screen.
I tried restoring the phone but it erased all of my data and now I can only take calls. I can no longer make calls and or send or receive text.
Any suggestions, or should I just take it to an Apple Store?

That picture is trying to tell you that there is a problem and you must connect it to your computer and restore with iTunes to fix it.

My iphone4 is 2 and 1/2 yrs old, works fine other then the volume buttons just stopped working all of sudden. This function not working means I cannot hear people very well when they call because I cannot turn the volume up and when watching footage i.e. music video or film, I cannot turn volume up or down. This has meant I cannot use my phone like I used to, therefore not fit for purpose. Questions is - Is Apple, under the Sale of Goods Act 1979 obliged to repair/replace my phone for free?
When I went into my Bromley store today I was told because the phone is not under the 12 month warranty Apple could not help me or I could pay in excess of £100 to get phone repaired, is this right?

Pretty much. Except that Apple will replace it for a fixed fee that is far less than the cost of a new phone. In the US the replacement cost for an iPhone 4 is $149. It is comparable in the UK. Unless you can prove that the fault was present at the time of purchase. A switch wearing out would probably be considered normal wear and tear, not a "fault".

Why would you not be syncing to your computer regularly?
If there is no backup, then you will likely lose everything.
The iphone is designed to be synced regularly.

Charge the battery for several hours. Then reset by holding the on/off and home buttons together for about 10 seconds till the Apple logo appears.
If you then see the USB cable and an iTunes display, follow the direction and plug your iPhone into iTunes.

Your phone has entered recovery mode. You will need to connect it to a computer with iTunes and restore it to factory settings. Hopefully you have a backup (either iTunes or iCloud) to restore from.
