Upgraded thumbnails, now all photos gone

When opening iPhoto, I got a prompt asking if I wanted to upgrade the photo thumbnails. Sounded ok, so I hit yes... now all of the photos are gone (thousands). Does anyone know what happened and if I can recover them?
Thanks to anyone who can help out!!!!

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Try rebuilding the library with iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be untouched for further attempts at fixing or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Archive and reinstall - now all photos gone

I needed to reinstall a new OS on my eMac and so did an archive and reinstall. I did not select keep user settings and now have lost all my photos.
Is there anything I can do about this?

    confused.1:
The answer is probably obvious, but I'll ask anyway. Did you make sure you had an up-to-date backup? Hopefully we can help you find and recover the lost music, however, a good up-to-date backup is the most important way to secure your valuable data. If you don't already have one get an external Firewire Hard Disk Drive and clone your entire volume using SuperDuper and keep it updated. (Post back for more info on all this).
Now to your music files. An Archive and Install should preserve your data whether or not you chose to preserve user settings. So follow roam's advice and check the Previous Systems folder and let us know what you find there.
    Good luck.

  • Plugged i phone 4s into different computer now all photos gone!

I have tried to find the answer to this in another thread but no luck.
I have an i phone 4s, I recently plugged the phone into the family computer (not my itunes on this comp) to print off a photo.
However once I had finished I realised all of the photos from my camera roll on my phone had disappeared. I later found these on my computer in a file.
My question is, how do I get these photos back onto my phone from my computer without wiping the ones I have since taken?
    Thank you

import the new ones to your computer http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083
if your pics are included in your backup you can restore to that http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766

  • Update thumbnails - all photos gone, please help

I was prompted to update my thumbnails in my iPhoto library. I chose yes and now all my photos are gone.
I tried already the alt key and I am being asked to create a new library or to choose an existing one. If I choose again the existing one it opens empty. I tried as well the iPhotolibrary Manager but it recovers only my photos, no events, dates and the library is then a bit messy.
Anyone experiencing the same problem? I am using iPhoto '08 7.1.5.

This won't help you know but in the future if you have similar issues the tip at the end of my signature below can help you quickly recover.
*HOWEVER, I think I've found a way you can get that Library6.iPhoto file out of TM:*
1 - while *in the Finder* open the Backups.backupdb folder on your Time Machine drive.
2 - drill down to the Pictures folder in your user account for the date just before the problem occurred.
3 - Control+click on the iPhoto library package and select Show Package contents from the drop down menu.
4 - locate and drag the Library6.iPhoto file to your desktop.
5 - replace the damaged file with the one from TM.
I think that will do it.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. • All photos gone with upgrade to iPhoto 9.6 ???

    Hi!
I updated my Mac to OS X 10.10. Since opening iPhoto required an update to iPhoto 9.6, I made this upgrade as well.
When starting the new iPhoto, I accepted to upgrade the library to the new format. There a mistake was found and a repair was necessary. When the repair was done, all photos were gone. Still the library file had a size of 500 GB, what gave me comfort to see, that the photos must still be there.
Then I opened iPhoto in the repair mode and prompted the repair myself. After a little while it asked whether all found 212,000 photos shall be imported into iPhoto and I accepted. Then it stopped saying that the disk space will not be sufficient and I cancelled the process.
Now looking at the iPhoto library, its size is only 2.69 GB and there are no photos in the masters folder.
There is a new folder "iPhoto Recovered Photos" which includes 121,000 photos (243 GB) - without folder hierarchy, all in this one folder.
It has to be noted, that iPhoto regularly complained about inconsistencies before, which have been repaired.
Unfortunately, we made no backup of our photos ...
Current storage: 466GB free out of 999 GB, 128 GB photos
What can I do to get my photos back?

    1. Make a back up. Make a back up. Make a back up.
Using a computer without a back up is like driving without a seatbelt. You can drive for years with no problem, but the day you do  have a problem the mess will be a lot bigger. Upgrading anything OS, Apps, whatever without first making a back up is drunk driving with a blindfold on and no seatbelt.
    2. I'm not sure what you've got right now. Is the 500 GB library still intact? If not, then really you're next job is to start over from scratch. Make a new Library and start importing all those photos again.
    3. If you do still have that 500 gb library intact, then try Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    4.
It has to be noted, that iPhoto regularly complained about inconsistencies before, which have been repaired.
If that happens once then it's not a problem, but when you get a message like that "regularly" then there is an underlying damage that's not being fixed.

  • HT4528 How do I restore all my photos? After upgrading my iPhone all photos were gone.

How do I restore all my photos? After upgrading my iPhone, all my photos were gone.

    What photos?
Photos taken with the iphone should be imported to your computer regularly as with any digital camera, most especially before any update or restore.  If you failed to do this, then they are likely gone.  You can try restoring from backup.
Photos synced from your computer should still be on your computer an in you regular backup copy of your computer.

  • Lightroom Crashed and ALL photos GONE!

Lightroom 4 crashed when I was importing photos from an external drive - I do not remember the error message.  When I restrted the program a message said the catalogue could not be found and I had the option to select the Default Catalogue.  I did so and now all of my photos are gone and when I use Finder (Mac OS 10.8.5) to access Photos/Lightroom, the file is empty.
How can I recover my photos?

  • Upgraded Iphone now everything is gone

I upgraded from an Iphone 4 to a Iphone 5c. When i got it in the mail i plugged it in and followed all the instructions now all my contacts, settings, everything is gone. The apps are still there but i have to reinstall all of them.

    jckinnick wrote:
Yeah i think so it would automatically update when i plug it into my computer.
I am guessing "it" means the iPhone 4.  No, it does not automatically update iOS.  You would have to click "Check for Updates" on the iPhone's summary page to have done that.
Since you did what xice recommended above and did not find a backup of the iPhone 4 in iTunes, the only other slight possibility is that you had set up iCloud backups and did one there.  You can check that on your iPhone 4 in Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > iCloud Backup ... if you ever did set up an iCloud account.  I suspect it's more likely that you would win a lottery than have an iCloud backup, but that is your last hope of retrieving iPhone 4 data.

  • All photos gone!!!!

Yesterday I was downloading off an SD card when iphoto decided to wipe everything, all photos are gone. Running iphoto 7.1.5 on OS 10.6.8 on older black macbook. I tried to restore using the time capsule but it says the disk is full. How do I fix?

Well if you have 100k photos that'll be a lot larger than 24 gigs.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)

  • Album artwork used to appear, but now all is gone!

I updated my iPod with new artwork at one point, but the artwork did not appear on my iPod. So, I naturally reconnected it and checked, and it was there in iTunes. I looked online and followed the usual recommendation of artwork problems by unchecking and rechecking the "Show Artwork on iPod" box and applying the changes. Now ALL of my artwork is gone from my iPod!
The artwork still shows up in iTunes when I play individual songs, but not when I see the Info for a group of songs on the same album. I try to re-add the artwork in the box, but it won't rewrite the ID3 tags, save the change or anything. So, I have no artwork on my iPod, but it still appears on my songs when I view them in iTunes. How can I solve this?

iPhoto has dissappeared off my laptop. Says it is installed, but cant find it. All photos gone

Do a Spotlight for "iPhoto.app" and see what yo get. If that fails download and run Find Any File to search for a file with "iPhoto.app" in the file name.
FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages. If the application is hiding somewhere on your hard drive FAF will find it.

  • Upgraded to iPhoto '11 and all photos gone!

Upgraded to iPhoto '11 this evening from iPhoto '09 and all my photos were showing up as blanks. All my events were there and the photo outlines with the correct meta data were all there. But the photos themselves were all blank with a triangle with exclamation point in them.
The Photo Library still showed 44GB in size so I knew it was all there somewhere but nothing was rendering. Tried holding down option/command and rebuilding but that didn't help.
I finally opened up Terminal and went into the photo library and found something that was definitely not right. First the Originals directory now seemed to be a symlink to a new Masters directory and that directory was empty! I also saw a bunch of new "Old ..." directories in there for example "Old Masters". And guess what, inside the Old Masters directory were all my photos!
So I moved all those directories inside Old Masters into Masters and started iPhoto again. All my photos are still blank but if I actually double click on a picture to look at it, it shows up this time instead of the triangle with ! point in it.
I've now restarted iPhoto with option/command and am waiting for the thumbnails to rebuild. It's now taking much longer to rebuild (compared to the first time I tried the trick) and it still has not finished the rebuild process. I'm hoping once this is complete that I'll be back in business.
Looks like Apple was doing some cleaning as part of the upgrade and for some reason, it did not finish it properly. We'll see if I'm back after this rebuild.

Note, here's the sequence of events in my case:
    1. Bought new iMac from Apple store
    2. Copied iphoto library onto external HFS+ sata disk (~44GB in size) from my old mac's internal disk
    3. Copied iphoto library from external HFS+ sata disk onto iMac internal disk
    4. Ran iPhoto on iMac and it did some upgrading, etc and then came up just fine
    5. Read up on the features for iPhoto '11 on Apple's website and discovered I didn't have some of the new features
    6. Discovered in About iPhoto menu that I was actually running iPhoto '09 which was the default installed on my brand new iMac
    7. Found that iPhoto '11 was on a DVD that came with my iMac but not pre-installed
    8. Used the DVD to upgrade to iLife '11 (iPhoto '11)
    9. Launched iPhoto but it did not launch saying I must run an upgrade first using Software Update
    10. Launched Software Update and it found iPhoto v9.1.
    11. Upgraded to it.
    12. Re-launched iPhoto.
    13. Started upgrading my photo library
    14. Took a long time but finally finished
    15. Library came up but with blank thumbnails and blank pictures with a ! triangle in them if you open the photo; but all meta data is correct
    16. Ran Get Info on iPhoto Library and saw that it was still the right size (~44GB)
    17. Used Terminal to go into the iPhoto Library and saw there was an Old Masters directory which contained all my photos still (hopefully)
At this point tried reading all sorts of forum posts and blogs and found nothing that worked. All pointed to upgrading to 9.0.1 and unfortunately I'm already on 9.1 as part of the software update above. Tried rebuilding, repairing, everything. Nothing works. Eventually copied out the Old Masters into my home directory and created a brand new iPhoto Library and imported everything back in. Just hoping I did not lose any of my photos but I definitely lost all the events and books (obviously).
I have some backups but they are a few months old unfortunately. And I did not even think to back up before upgrading to iPhoto '11 since I have never had an issue with an Apple iPhoto upgrade in the past. Sigh
