Upgraded to 10.4 - now my external hard drive sounds like a blender.

Hi -
I'm hoping someone can help me with this. I have a new LaCie external drive that I keep all my important files on. One of the reasons I bought this drive was because it's extremely quiet and shuts itself down after a few minutes not in use. I just upgraded to 10.4 last night and when I came in this morning, the hard drive now sounds like a kitchen disposal with a spoon stuck in it -- an obnoxious loud clanking comes from it at all times whether it computer is accessing it or not. Anyone know how to fix this or even hear of ths issue? It's extremely annoying.

Actually, it seems to have stopped now completely and is working fine. Weird. I was exagerrating about bit with the blender remark, but it's a new drive so I can't imagine it would fail that suddenly, especially with the change of OS.

  • I downloaded some videos to Premier Elements 13 from external hard drive but now the external hard drive is damaged. I tried to open the videos on the organizer which it shows the video but with a yellow ? and says missing file. Is there anyway I can open

I downloaded some videos to Premier Elements 13 from an external hard drive but now the external hard drive is damaged. While setting up my new MAC the external hard drive was dropped and I have been told by an outside source they could not retrieve the files.  It had 4 years of photos and videos on it. I remembered that I had downloaded some of the videos from the external hard drive (before it was broke) to Adobe Organizer 13 when I installed the Adobe 13 on my MACOS X 10.9.5.  I tried to open the videos on the organizer which it shows the video but with a yellow ? and says missing file. Is there anyway I can open these videos?
Any input is greatly appreciated!! I am sick over losing the videos and had a little hope on Adobe Organizer until I was unable to open them.  I am thinking it is due to my external hard drive not being plugged in. I thought when I transferred from the external hard drive to Adobe 13 that it would be there without the external hard drive needing to be attached but maybe I did something wrong.
    Thanks again for any help!!!!

It had 4 years of photos and videos on it.
To what did your camera record those photos and videos - camera's internal memory, inserted memory card, other?
Any remote chance that the latter may still exist for you to use to download the camera files to your new external hard drive?

I have recently updated my OS from Leopard to Snow Leopard but now my external hard drive and even my iPhone are not recognized by my Macbook Pro!  Anyone have a suggestion??

Zap the PRAM and Reset the SMC, then try again. If the problem remains, update to 10.6.8 and repeat.

  • I recently updated my Mid 2007 iMac with the latest OS 10.8.5 now my external hard drives will not show up. They show up when I boot them up on a machine running and earlier OS. Is there a fix for this?

I recently updated my 20-inch, Mid 2007 iMac with the latest OS 10.8.5 now my external hard drives will not show up. They show up when I boot them up on a machine running and earlier OS. Is there a fix for this?

Can you see them in Disk Utility?
If so, can you select and Mount them?
If not, disconnect them, reset the iMac's SMC and then reconnect them.
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Unplug the computer's power cord.
    3. Wait fifteen seconds.
    4. Attach the computer's power cord.
    5. Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
If you still can not see them, connect them back up to the iMac running the older OS, open Disk Utility and look to see how they are partitioned and formatted.

  • Hard drive sounds like it's about to take flight...won't boot at all.

Got one for ya. I just updated my G4 to 10.4.7 and now when I boot:
    1) Button lights up
    2) Hard drive sounds like a teen driving a Ferrari to prom in first gear.
    - that's it. No screen, mouse, keyboard, start-up noise ( I so miss that wonderful "BONG!" noise, now. ) Nothing.
I am old-school PC newB by MAC so be patient w/me.
PS. how do you open the optical drive with no power to the keyboard?

  • Snow Leopard upgrade - now iomega external hard drive cant be seen

I've been using an Iomega External Hard Drive (RPHD-C) to run Time Machine as my back-up. Upgraded to Snow Leopard yesterday and - no external Hard Drive. Doesnt show in Disk Utility. Any ideas?

Disconnect the disk and power it down for a few minutes, then reconnect, see if Disk Utility recognizes it.
If no help, disconnect again, and Restart your Mac, then reconnect the drive.
If it's connected via USB, try FireWire; or vice-versa.
If still no help, try different ports, cables, and combinations of the two (sometimes a plug that works fine in one port won't make good contact in a different one).

  • Upgraded to Yosemite, now need to upgrade iPhoto.  Should I leave external hard drive plugged in during update so that software is "compatible"?

I upgraded to Yosemite after having not updated my software since purchasing my iMac about 5 years ago.  (I know, bad...)  I have an external hard drive that has 20,000 pics on it and I need to know if I should leave it plugged in during the update.  I'm afraid if I do, something will happen to my pics.  But at the same time, I'm wondering if I unplug it, will the new iPhoto recognize the "old" software and be able to open up the pics on my external hard drive?  I know this can be a problem because I tried opening my EHD on my neighbors computer and our iPhoto versions were different and it wouldn't open on hers.  Thank you in advance for you help!

When I go to the EHD and try to open it that way, it says the iPhoto library must be updated.  Should I just let it update that as well?  People have told me to copy  my pics to the EHD and store in a safe place, but will I have to get it out and update it everytime I do an update so that the software will be compatible?
Before you let iPhoto update the iPhoto library make a backup copy of your iPhoto Library. Updating a large library can take a long time, and if something should interrupt this update, the library may be left in a inconsistent state. It is much safer to have a backup you can revert to, just in case.
But at the same time, I'm wondering if I unplug it, will the new iPhoto recognize the "old" software and be able to open up the pics on my external hard drive?
Are the "Pics" on your external drive your iPhoto Library? Or simply folders with image files?
If your iPhoto library is on that drive, what is the filesystem of this external drive?

  • I transferred data from my external hard drive to my restored Mac Book Pro via migration assistant and now my external hard drive in time capsule has red minus signs. How do I get rid of that without getting rid of any of my data?

I used Migration Assistant to transfer my data from my external hard drive via Time Capsule to my restored Mac Book Pro. When I now go into Time Capsule I there are red minus signs in the corner of all the folders that are contained in my back up. How do I get rid of this and access my previous back-ups?

Select the drive and Finder > Get info and at the bottom "ignore permissions on this volume"
You can copy the files, but the ownership on the files still belongs to the other user account, once your done copying, then perform a #6 Reset Users Permissions and that will set all the ownership to that account.
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
Another method is to copy the entire folder, then change it's permissions.

  • Updated to 10.6 and now my external hard drive is corrupted

I am running Windows 7 64 bit with a WD external hard drive which contains all my music. I updated today to iTunes 10.6 and after restarting the computer could not access my external drive. The only message it is asking me is do I want to format the drive - obviously not!!
The external drive was working absolutely fine immediately prior to the update; I have read that this update has caused all sorts of problems with crashes etc. I'm now wondering if anyone else had this problem and if there is another solution other than recovering everything from the drive and starting again.

Updating iTunes has no affect on the functionality of the iPhone.
So let's start over... what is the REAL issue?

  • Almost got it..now need external hard drive

Well it just goes to show that persistence pays off, at least so far.
I now have FCP6.0.6 installed on my 2012 15" Macbook Pro running Lion.
The laptop was given to me with Mavericks.  Shane had the helpful response to get back to
Lion.  I researched and found out that this computer originally came with Lion, so I used the recovery
disk to do a factory reset.  I erased the hard drive and then did the factory reset over the internet.
Then to get FCP 6.0.6 on Lion.  I did it, but I am not exactly sure what did the trick.  I installed Rosetta
from Snow Leopard, but also did the command line recommended my Shane.  Not sure which one worked,
but it loaded FCP without a hitch.
Now I am up and running.   Phewwwww
So now I need an external hard drive.   No heavy lifting for this go around (HDV) but I may want something
a bit faster in the future.
I thought that a Thunderbolt drive might work out as I will be logging video from the camera with firewire to the
    external drive.
Wondering if there would be any problems with this drive.
Thanks again for all your suggestions

If Kirk reports any, I'm sure you can help walk him through uninstalling Rosetta. Now that he no longer needs it to run FCP 6...just install it.
WOW: Two statements - wrong twice!
Kirk specifically indicated he needed to install FCP6 on his new MacBook so that he could edit footage using FCP6 (while on his boat, if I remember correctly).
And no, I NEVER advise anyone to install Rosetta on a Lion, Mt. Lion and/or Mavericks Mac.  And to the contrary, when I see such advice (which is stale-dated advice from 2011, but is infrequently repeated more recently) I attempt to warn the OP not to follow such advice.
Since you have been on one or more of those threads, you have read my posts warning not to install Rosetta, but you continue to ignore them and proceed to give such advice based upon your one client's experience.
And hoping for advice on how to remove Rosetta after he reports crashes, panic attacks, etc. is like closing the barn door after you lose the cow!
So, no, I will not be giving Kirk, or anyone else for that matter, advice on how to remove Rosetta; only advice to NOT install it in the first place.
Something about an ounce of prevention being worth a pound of cure!
    Good luck, Kirk!

  • Now, USB External Hard Drive Not Recognized after 10.6.8 Update

My external Hard Drive is not recognized on start up.  I have to unplug it and plug it back in for it to be recognized.
All this since 10.6.8 updated today.
I'm a fool for updating the same day.
This has happened before and I always forget the bugs in the software when it first comes out.

Alright, I'm gonna go ahead and close this thread. I found out the solution to my issue. Turns out it was a problem with a system file I changed right before installing. The error only occurred on a restart... the required 10.6.1 reboot was the first reboot since the change, so thus it looked like the culprit.
If you want a more thorough explanation of my problem (highly HIGHLY doubt it's gonna help you guys out), check this thread --> http://forums.appleinsider.com/showpost.php?p=1480362&postcount=8
    Sorry for the trouble!

  • Odd La Cie External Hard Drive Sound

    Hi everyone.
I got a load of Apple stuff ranging from 1985-1996 yesterday and included was an external LaCie hard drive.
I plugged her in and noticed a really, really odd sound. I've never heard of HDD make a sound like this before, and couldn't find a similar sound on all of the "hard drive failure sounds" websites.
The hard drive itself is an IBM DORS-32160 from 1996. Below is a link to a youtube video with the hard drive producing the odd sound. I believe it repeats 3 times before I stop recording.
    youtube.com/watch?v=Plbo5SJl5Go
You will need to turn your speakers up.
I assume its means the HDD is toast, but does anyone have any idea what this means? Like, what the problem is or if you have heard it before?
    Thanks a bunch.

DiskWarrior will only repair HFS and HFS+ file systems. You need a utility that repairs the FAT file system. You might try hooking the drive up to a Windows box then try to repair it with a Windows disk utility.

  • My imac takes about eight minutes to be fully functional after a cold start or from the sleep mode. The hard drive sounds like it has to go through a number of gyrations before being fully loaded. When I first bought the imac start up was much faster

My Imac takes about 8 minutes to be fully functional after a restart or awakened from the sleep mode. I can hear the hard drive making a number of gyrations before it's ready to let me do stuff. This is a 5 year old machine and was much faster in the beginning. Any suggestions?

Impossible to say however it may need more RAM, or if you have been turning it off every day it isn't given the opportunity to run it's daily, weekly and monthly maintenance. This is all done in the background in the middle of the night. I would recommend following the steps in 25 Ways to Speed Up Your Mac until you find the cause of your slowdown.

  • After upgrade to Leopard OS thinks my External Hard Drive Needs Repairs

After I upgraded to Leopard on my POWERBOOK G4, on startup with my Seagate External HD 400GB (ST3400601-CBRK)hooked up with Firewire, The OS displays a message DISK REPAIR and locks the Seagate giving me "limited fucntionality," basically I can't use it.
If I run Disk Utility, I don't get the repair option, only verify. When I hit "verify" it tells me it can't do anything because the disk needs repairs.
On the Seagate already is an eDrive Partition with TechTool Platinum It shows everything is fine The Disk in 100% good shape - no fragments, The Files and Finder index are all fine.
Does anyone have an idea what's wrong?

Zap the PRAM and Reset the SMC, then try again. If the problem remains, update to 10.6.8 and repeat.

  • Help?  Can not find external hard drive after upgrading to 10.6.3

I upgraded my iMac to Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and now my external hard drive does not appear.  Not sure what to do.

It is powered (the light is on).  I was uploading photos from the drive yesterday, so it worked perfectly fine before the upgrade to 10.6.8 (which I did during the night).  Is there anything else to try before I move it to another computer to see if it works?  Again, thanks.
