Upgraded to 10.9 and OS X Server 3.0.1, users cannot connect to home shares

Hello.  I recenlty upgraded from Lion Server to Mavericks and Server OS X and users are now unable to access their home shares.  When one attempts to afp to the server after connecting to my uni's VPN, the login box simply shakes and no connection is made.
Running Mac Mini with 10.9 and OS X Server 3.0.1 with home shares located on a Pegasus RAID array that worked fine under Lion Server.  The upgrade seemed to go smoothly, as all accounts were intact and the settings were identical to the functional Lion Server settings.  I have combed these forums trying to find a response that actually works for me, but was unable to locate a match that resulted in a working solution.
Here is a sample log when attempting to login:

When I first upgraded, I was able to connect via PC but not Mac (10.9) clients, so I tried creating a new account to attempt to ferret out the problem.  When I created a new account in the Server.app connecting to an existing home share, I was still unable to connect to it remotely--Server.app threw the "Cannot authenticate connection..." error and closed.  I then attempted to create a new user and new home share directory in Workgroup Manager and received an error stating the home directory could not be created (I forgot the actual verbiage, but I will replicate and post if needed).  I tried simply adding the folder to the home shares folder, but I was still unable to connect via afp or smb.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated, as I need to resolve this issue ASAP.  Please let me know if any other information would be useful to diagnosing this issue.
Thanks!

I have the same problem although I upgraded from Lion Server to Mountain Lion Server. The error appears to go hand in hand with this error.

I've read a number of things to try. A lot of people point to DNS being a problem, but I'm confident this is correct in my environment.

I suspect the problem is to do with Kerberos and in relation to this server being an OD Replica.
I would really appreciate anyone's insight into this.

I have tried from so many forms. This is so frustrating. Thank for everyone/anyone who wants to help. So this is what happened: I had to uninstall my previous sqlserver 2012(which worked great) for some reason, and I uninstalled everything from that download.
Then I installed the trial edition of sql server 2012 (64 Bit) and It wouldn't connect to the database. (Error mentioned above.) My local DB is COWBOYS. (COWBOYS is also my computer name.) After this, I have tried downloading sqlexpress and sqlserver 64bit
many times and cannot connect to my local DB.
How do I connect to my Local DB?
Also, I think this might help: (When I run sqlserve.exe, which I was able to find in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\110\LocalDB\Binn, I get an error: Your SQL server installation is either corrupt or has been tampered with(Error getting
instance ID from name). Please uninstall then re-run setup to correct this problem.
I would happily re install it, if it wasn't my 20th time.
I don't have any remote connections, I don't use username/password, only window authentication. I work mostly on visual studio, but without able to store /retrieve data, I don't know how to survive.
May be the solution is very simple, but I am too frustrated.
Some of the things I have tried:
From a command prompt, enter one of the following commands:
net start "SQL Server Agent (MSSQLSERVER)" OR
net start "SQL Server Agent(instancename)"(for instance)
on my sql configuration, I cannot start anything because there is nothing there to start. I can post more details, if that would help. Also, some more details about the error:

Any one that can help me, I will be greatful. Thank you so much. p.s. please ask me anything if you have any questions.

It sounds like there are a couple things going on here.  First check if you have a successful install of SQL Server, then we'll figure out the connection issues.
Can you launch SQL Server Configuration Manager and check for SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) if default instance or SQL Server (other name) if you've configured your instance as a named instance.  Once you find this, make sure the service is started.
If not started, try to start it and see if it throws an error.  If you get an error, post the error message your hitting.  If the service starts, you can then launch SSMS and try to connect.  If you have a default instance, you can use the machine
name in the connection dialog.  Ex:  "COWBOYS" where Cowboys is the machine name.  However, if you named the SQL Server instance during install, you'll need to connect using the machine\instance format.  Ex:  COWBOYS\Romo (where Romo
is the instance name you set during install).
You can also look at the summary.txt file in the SQL Server setup error logs to see what happened on the most recent install.  Past install history is archived in the log folder if you need to dig those up to help troubleshoot, but the most
recent one may help get to the bottom of it if there is an issue with setup detecting a prior instance that needs to be repaired.

    How Can i solve this?

    1. Make sure SQL Server Service is running
    2. If a named instance, make sure SQL Server browser service is running
    3. Make sure SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections
    4. Examine the SQL Server error log for messages confirming that SQL is listening on the expected network interfaces and ports
    5. Test server connectivity with PING from the client machine
    6. Test port connectivity using TELNET or PowerShell to the server and port (from step 4) from the client machine.  For example
    a. TELNET <server-name> 1433
    b. PowerShell: 1433 | % { echo ((new-object Net.Sockets.TcpClient).Connect("YourServerName",$_)) "server listening on TCP port $_" }
    7. Check firewall settings if step 5 or 6 connectivity test fails

  • Sharing only users cannot connect to Lion Server

    Dear all,
I stumbled across a funny problem, that I tried to resolve all day. I just wanted to add a sharing only user for my girlfriends new MacBook that she could use to connect to a shared Time Machine Volume.
If I add a new standard user, this user can connect to my server via finder (connect as...) and see the shared drives. If the same user tries to connect to the Time Machine Backup Volume via the settings dialog, it receives an error message (OSStatus-error 5).
If I add a sharing only user, this user cannot connect via finder or Time Machine (same error). The clients console states the following error message:
/System/Library/CoreServices/NetAuthAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/NetAuthAgent[2471]      AFP error -5018 mapped to EIO
    Does anybody have an Idea?

That is my point.  Yes, Apple still lets you add users via users and groups in system preferences but that is not how you should be adding users.  I've seen nothing but trouble when that option is used to add users and I believe that the Lion server docs say to not use that.  If you are using lion server why not use it the way it was meant to be.  Just create a account in OD and only give her access to the Time Machine Service and none of the others.

If home sharing isn't enabled on the Apple TV, you will need the aluminium remote that came with it to do so.

check the lower right corner of the iTunes window
if you don't see this while the homeshared library is loaded, home sharing hasn't been set up properly.

  • Server 10.5 - Windows users cannot logon to domain

    Greetings,
We are running Leopard Server 10.5.4 as an Open Directory Master and running the SMB service as a PDC for a few Windows clients. The Windows machines have joined the domain and users have been logging in and accessing their home folders and shared folders with no problems.
All of a sudden, users get an error message when logging on saying that "the domain controller is down or otherwise inaccessible." When I log onto the machine locally as an administrator I can take the computer off of the domain, restart the computer, and then rejoin the domain with no problem, but users continue to get the error.
I am puzzled as to why it can see the domain to join it, but then losses that ability when users attempt to login.
Any help is appreciated and let me know if I have left information out that could be of use.

My bet's on an incorrect home folder location.
First things first. Make sure that the Sharepoint for the home folders is set up correctly.
You can double check this as follows:
In server admin: Select the server name right below where it says "Available servers"
Click the file sharing tab at the top.
Click the SharePoints button and the Browse button
Click on your desired home folder location in the file browser.
Below the file browser, click on the share point tab.
Make sure "Enable Automount" is checked.
    Click the edit button.
Make sure the directory is /LDAPv3/127.0.0.1
Make sure the protocol is AFP
Make sure that Use for "User home folders" is selected.
Click okay and save your changes.
    Now to workgroup manager.
Select your user and click the "Home" button
Make sure that there's a home folder location selected. (ie the line is highlighted)
Click the edit button. (it looks like a pencil)
It's get a bit tricky here...
Mac OS X Server/Share Point URL:
It should look like this: afp://server.example.com/Users (assuming you're using the users folder)
    Path to Home Folder:
You should ONLY have the shortname of your user here.
    Full path:
It has to look like this: /Network/Servers/server.example.com/Users/shortname
Note that I've put server.example.com where you should have the domain name of your server, and shortname where you should have the actual shortname for your user.
    Clear as mud?
    Hope it helps.

  • Windows SMB users cannot connect to 10.5.4 server

    Hi all,
Have a server running 10.5.4 bound to AD and running an OD to provide management of the Macs. Pretty standard setup and haven't had any problems elsewhere with the same deployment. However we're having a problem with XP users connecting to SMB shares. Mac users can connect over AFP or SMB fine, XP users are getting a "Network path could not be found" error. What's more the errors in the SMB log on the server aren't too descriptive. We're getting a few broken pipe errors, but no indication of what's causing that. XP machines don't appear to be getting to the authentication stage.
Server is an Xserve with a Promise RAID, shares are on a 4TB partition, bound to AD (OD not running Kerberos). SMB setup seems to be correctly aware of the AD.
    Anyone any ideas?
    Thanks

Is your SMB a Standalone or Domain Member?
I have a similar problem and noticed that if I change SMB from "Domain Member" to Standalone Windows users can connect. Now every so often Leopard Server will change SMB back to a Domain Member (automatically).
I have the Server bound to AD. AFP works for the Macs no matter what. Mac Users authenticate to AD and mount the share. However if they try to use SMB, it fails for the Macs as well if SMB is a Domain Member.
I would like to stop Leopard from not reverting back or fix the "domain member" problem.
The fact that I can connect while it's a Standalone suggests, to me, that it's not a permissions problem. As well the failure carries to the Mac side means it's not a Windows issue.

  • Users cannot connect to Open Directory Leopard server

Just testing Leopard server and running into all sorts of problems...
Clean install of Leopard Server running DNS, AFP and Open Directory.
Set up DNS first and checked both forward and reverse look-up was correct.
Promoted to Open Directory master from Standalone.
Created two test user accounts (without Home directories) and gave them access to a specific sharepoint.
Setup LDAP on the client machine (Leopard client) and could see the user accounts in the Directory app.
Try to log in.....'username or password incorrect'.
Check the OD logs and cannot find any reference to the attempted log-in.
I understand that it appears that user accounts require a Home Directory in Leopard, regardless of whether you actually want one (I don't). I tried creating a home directory using Workgroup Manager but as noted in other threads, the 'create home directory' button doesn't work.
I then created a home directory via the command line for one of the user accounts but am still unable to log-in.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

This may be a stupid question but have you run sudo chown on the user's home directory after creating it?
I had the same problem and my solution is posted here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1290158&tstart=0
Let me know if that works. If not, we'll work on it together.
