Upgraded to ATI 4870 on Mac Pro and cant enter Boot Camp

Hi!
I have just received the ATI Radeon 4870 for my Mac Pro (Early 2008)and have upgraded my Leopard to 10.5.7 and works fine on the Mac side. When I reboot and hold the command key I can see my MAC and my BOOT CAMP 2 options as always before. When I click on boot camp I get a white screen with a black frome around it and there is NO hard disk activity and nothing happens no matter how long I leave the computer alone. Before I had no problem booting into my boot camp loaded with vista 64 bit. I have another partition with parallels and that is fine but not this boot camp partition.
Any suggestions?
Thanks for all your time!

I guess you can't boot Safe Mode.
I would have uninstalled the graphics drivers first, as part of preparing to swap cards. Assume you had.... before this and the proper ATI (or Nvidia) drivers. Put back in the original card.... or are you trying to use both? Again, not clear from your comments.
You can't use ATI and Nvidia in Windows concurrently, don't know why but seems to be rule that they won't be compatible.
You have another - physical - native Windows partition? or a Parallels VM that is not using a native (Boot Camp) partition, which works.

  • My mac pro does not support boot camp (somehow)?

So for some reason every time I try and open the boot camp assistant I get this message "Boot camp assistant can not be used, This Mac does not support Boot Camp". I find this vary confusing as it should be able to (or so I assume as boot camp came pre installed). I don't Have a RAID set or even a RAID card for that matter. All the HD's are formatted to Mac OS Extended (Journaled). I'm not sure what else Im missing. I would consider using Parallels like on my macbook only that I'm trying to test out some rather graphic intensive games to see wether or not I want to build a gaming rig in the future, and virtual machines have this nasty habit of cutting my power in half.

  • Can't find Leopard Installer Disc for Mac Pro and Need to Boot from Disc.

Any chance I can create a bootable DVD for my Mac Pro without having the original to duplicate?

This has to do with the mouse lag/freeze problem people have been having, by the way. Just about any 10 consecutive seconds that I use my mouse, it freezes then jumps a little ways away - which is seriously hampering my ability to finish this editing project.
It's been suggested this is a directory problem, which is why I'm looking for the boot disc. If anyone has any other advice on this, I'm all ears.
I've already changed out the hardware and run disk permissions, etc., to no avail.

  • If I have a bootable copy of a disk running 10.4.11, is there any reason I can't swap out the internal drive of a newly purchased Mac Pro and have it boot from the tiger disk? Thanks very much for any insight.

or is there some sort of built in protection against this.

In addition, if you are talking about an older machine like a G4 or earlier with PATA drives, the Mac Pro uses SATA drives, so this is not a simple swap out, but if there's room an adapter like this might work in that situation:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Sonnet%20Technology/TPASA/
so that you could use the drive in the new computer to copy the data files, not for booting the OS.
If you need to transfer files from one machine to the other, you could do this over a network, or use FW target drive mode, or get a universal bare drive cable adapter.

  • Mac Pro Dual Monitors in Boot Camp Windows 8.1 Pro

I just set up my 2013 Mac Pro with Bootcamp using Windows 8.1 Pro x64 and so far everything works great (albeit the initial setup was a struggle) except that Windows won't use my 2nd monitor.  In device manager I see both displays but one has the exclamation on it saying there was a problem and it won't be enabled (yes, that generic too, gotta love Microsoft).  I really want to be able to use both displays when I am in boot camp, is there anything I can do to fix this?  I have made sure both Windows and Mac are fully updated and still no love.

Thank you for the link but it wasn't helpful as it only really said compatibility.  What did finally resolve the issue was going directly to AMD and finding that they updated the BootCamp specific drivers.  For other that stumble upon this, you cannot use the normal drivers from AMD but you must search for the bootcamp specific drivers (which also includes an updated Catalyst utility and a couple extra things not included in Apples release of the drivers).

  • Mountain lion on Mac Pro...after boot camp can't get back into OS x!!!!

    Hey all,
Not sure what is going on?!?!? I sucessfully set up windows on bay 3 of my mac pro following the Apple documentaion....success!  However, when I go and try to boot back into OS X, I can't. All I get is the chime, then a white screen and pause. If I let go of any of the key combos (see below), it boots right back into windows.
List of things I can't do on boot are :
    - hold shift and go into safe mode
    - hold Command + R and go into recovery mode
    - hold alt and look for boot drived
The only thing that I have succesfully done is gone into target disk mode and checked the drives on my macbook pro. They seem fine in disk utility.
Please help! I don't want to be doomed to life with only windows 7 on my mac pro.
    Much thanks
    D

As an ammendment, on my macbook pro, I have succesfully mounted my MAC PRO boot drive (mac pro is in target disk mode). Everything looks fine. So summary is...
-Can't use any of the options to force a log in to my mac pro.
-I can mount my mac pro boot drive to my macbook pro and boot it there
    -allways defaults to windows.
Any knowledge (even obvious) is much appreciated.

  • Mac Pro with XP in boot camp - wireless speed fluctuates

I'm running XP on my Mac Pro, i installed all the latest drivers (from the leopard DVD and also from windows update) but i'm noticing very heavy fluctuations regarding my wireless network speed.
When i look at "Wireless Network Connection Status", the connection/strength is always very good, but the speed fluctuates from anything between 54Mbps to just 1Mbps.
I've searched the forum and i've found some people with similar, but not the same problem, and their solutions (mainly windows patches) did not work for me.
Just to be clear, under Leopard the wireless connection works just fine, and on my work laptop (hp, XP Pro) it works as expected. So it doesnt seem to be a router problem to me.

  • Early 2008 Mac Pro - Can't load Boot Camp drivers for Win 7 64

Trying to install Win 7 64 bit on my early 2008 Mac Pro.  I downloaded the Boot Camp drivers 4.0.4033 and installed them on a USB drive but, for some reason, when I try the install them during the process, I get a message that my hardware is not recognized.  Skipping the driver loading process, I am able to install Win 7 but when the system trys to restart to continue the install, I get a message "disk error, press any key to restart".  Pressing any key does not get me anywhere.  I went through the Win 7 repair process and again tried to load the drivers with no luck.
    Any thoughts would be appreciated.
    Thank you,

That article was also my starting point and I have followed those steps again and again and again. I haven't slept, I haven't done anything other then try to make it work for more hours than I can count. I came here for help because that solution is not working for me.
The region and keyboard type settings simply don't have the Apple keyboard layout listed. As I said, someone on the Fusion forum tried to follow the article's instructions too and he managed to get it working because he COULD run setup.exe (Boot Camp Drivers) on his machine, and I CAN'T. Yes, it is all explained in that article... but the drivers WON'T INSTALL, I get an error message saying "This version of Boot Camp is not intended for this computer model".
First you said it wasn't physically possible for me to install the drivers, then you said I should just follow the article. Well, the article clearly says "Install the Boot Camp Windows device drivers in the virtual machine" which you just said couldn't be done! I want to cry. I should have just bought a second laptop, this is too painful.

  • Mac, Windows, and Fedora on Boot Camp?

I currently have Windows XP and of course Mac installed on my MacBook, but I was wanting to get a little experience with Linux again and I was going to install Fedora or openSUSE, but I installed a ISO DVD/CD and it says I have to practically reformat it as a Journaled drive or whatever. Is there anyway to avoid this because doing so would reformat my drive and I don't feel like making backups for all my information every time I want to add an OS. Is there any way around this?
I had to do this before to reinstall Windows.
Also, could anyone tell me what kind of ISO image I should download for a MacBook? On my old HP laptop I thought the ISO-[i386]-DVD was the right one. Or does Mac's need a x86? Or does it really not matter? I just noticed that whatever I downloaded was usually a i386 on the HP. I don't really know the difference.
I plan on getting Parallels again and just doing it like that. Or VMware if that's better? Again, something I could use an opinion on. I had Parallels before and eventually it started causing issues. But that could have been my fault, I was still fairly new to the Mac system.
    -Thanks

    Hi The Gift,
    have a look here for a tri-boot Mac http://blog.christophersmart.com/2009/12/02/how-to-triple-boot-mac-pro-with-os-x -fedora-windows/
And yes, you have to revert back to a single OSX harddisk in order to tri-boot.
Although for initial testing/experiencing I would propose to use VirtualBox http://www.virtualbox.org/ and put Fedora in a VM.
The i386 package should work just fine on your MacBook. Or you can use the 64-bit Fedora variant which is then called x86_64

I upgraded to Lion on my Mac mini and I'm wondering if I have to pay 29.99 to upgrade it on my Macbook pro also. Or since both computers are registered under the same account, is there a way to share the program?

You can download it from the mac app store again on the other computer free of charge. Just go to purchases in the mac app store on the other computer and log in with the same account you used to purchase lion. Then you should see lion listed as a purchase along with a gray box that says INSTALL.

I factory reset my Mac Book Pro and when entering the Upgrade SN of LR5 it says it's Invalid. Any suggestions? Thanks.

It will be necessary for you to install Lightroom from an upgrade installer. An upgrade requires the original serial number from the version that you first purchased, as well as the serial number for the upgrade. The upgrade serial number, by itself, will not work.

  • Please take a look here: a lot of picture's from the Mac Pro and Upgrades.

Just like any other Mac Pro owner, i'am really happy with it!
Please take a look at my site: http://mac.powerbras.nl
This is the first site i have ever made (on a Mac) so i hope you will like it!
Before i had my Mac Pro i would really like too see a little more from the inside. But there where just a few site's with some small pictures. Now i made this site with some high resolution pictures so everyone can see the inside off the Mac Pro and how perfect it is!
Also you can find the Xbench results from my configuration and all the Apple System Profiler specifications
Please take a look, you will like it. Especially when you have no Mac Pro!

    Anne,
    Great job on the site.
There are a number of third party templates available for iWeb that, with some creativity, can yield a site that looks nothing like the template-based norm. An example of one such site, "The Camera Obscura", a site created in iWeb and hosted on .Mac, demonstrates very well the limitless capabilities of iWeb. Some post-publishing html editing has been done on Obscura, but is easily accomplished with the right tools.
Additional iWeb templates and other tools that support this great application can be found in The iWeb Tool Chest.
Keep up the great work on your site!

  • ATI R9 290x - Mac Pro 2009 4,1

Hey all. I just wanted to share my experience with video card upgrading. I have searched tireless on all forums to find solid answers and figure out what the **** I can put in my computer.
I ended up buying an ATI Sapphire R9 290x off eBay for like $225. The real reason is for playing games in bootcamp running Windows 8.1. Otherwise, I really didn't need to buy a new card running in Apple's OS X for work.
My biggest concerns were 1) will the video card even work and 2) do I need another power supply for it.
I don't care about EFI flashing, I really don't see a need for it. I have my old ATI 4870 if there were a reason I need to use that. The selection for non EFI cards are far better and far cheaper.
Back on point. Initially I had issues with the 290x, nothing working with my current setup. I also purchased a 6pin to 8pin PCIe cable for the card's power.
I use the system for Protools HD. Besides the video card I have an AVID Native HD PCIe card and a 4-port USB3.0 PCIe card. I also use each hard drive bay. Mac OS, Windows 8.1, an separate spare drive, and one for Time Machine backups.
After several attempts, I took out the PCIe cards and all the hard drives, except for the Windows drive, and it booted up.
To make a long story short, I had to install OS X 10.10 on my main OS X drive for the card to boot up with everything else connected. I did a clean install because of some conflicts between a generic USB3 kext and OS X 10.10.
So everything was cool. Running Protools in OS X 10.10, no problems. Running Battlefield 4 in Windows 8.1 seemed to be going fine at first, but I had a couple of shut downs after about 30-60 minutes of play. I added a separate power supply (650w) and that seemed to take care of the sudden shutdowns. Likely the Mac Pro power supply is just a hair short of power when it starts to stress out on more intense stuff. Also for those who don't know, to run the power supply separate, you have to do the power clip trick (google it). It might that if I wasn't running the other two cards and other hard drives, I might not need another power supply, so I would try without it first if that's the case for anyone upgrading.
***** because I have to keep the case open for now until I find a better solution to the power cable, but at the end of the day, running Battlefield 4 with Ultra settings, is worth the hassle this was.
    Hopes this helps anyone else.

Thank you for daring to bravely forge ahead into the unknown compatibility mire of graphics card land.  I was hesitant to think beyond the different that Apple intended for the Mac Pro and try out the 290, but finding your post and another on Barefeats has assuaged my doubts.  We will soon be replacing our non-approved 6870 1GB with the non-approved power hungry beast that is the 4GB 290.
If you're interested in testing your soldering skills, I found a site that generously provided details on how to solder a relay between one of the SATA power plugs in the drive bay to the green and black wires on the motherboard connection of the external power supply.  This way the second power supply turns on and off with the Mac's power supply, so there is no need to switch it off and on manually.
Soon our aging 4.1 will get its much needed pacemaker and not have to wheeze through increasingly graphics hungry games like Star Citizen and Elite Dangerous.
    Keep MacIn'
