Upgraded to iTunes 9.2 - lost entire library from iTunes

I upgraded to iTunes 9.2 today and it seemed to work fine. I synced my iPhone and played some music etc. Turned my computer off later and back on - reopened itunes to fine my entire library missing including all my playlists etc.
It looks like a blank install, even though in preferences it is still pointed at the folder where all my iTunes content is.
How do I fix this without starting from scratch?

Are you running Windows as your computer information line suggests? If so I'll asked to be moved from the Mac iTunes forum to Windows iTunes.
Are your files missing, or is it just they don't show in iTunes? On a Mac you can hold down the option key (no idea what this would be on a PC) while starting iTunes to tell iTunes to let you guide it to a library.

How do I share just one movie (not my entire library) from my itunes library with an authorized computer using home sharing?

    many thanks.
    That should be possible.
From his library connect to your library via Home Sharing.
Select the name of the shared library in the source pane of your itunes, and click on the wee disclosure triangle to the left of the name of the library. Does "Films" appear beneath the name of the library?
    Here's a screenshot of what I mean.
Select "Films". In the right-hand pane you should see the item you want to transfer. Just select that item, and click "Import".
Use the same basic technique to get one or a few songs from your library transferred to his library. (The only difference is that you would have "Music" selected instead of "Films".
If you don't want him to have access to other items in your library, you could just switch Home Sharing off on his library after you've done the transfers.

  • I want to transfer my entire library from a Mac to a Dell

I tried to use the backup function to save all my music to DVDs. The music is copied to the DVD, but when I try to import it to my Dell, it copies a few songs, locks up, and spits the DVD out asking for the next disk. It seems to only transfer songs that I purchased; not my entire library. Is there a way to get the entire library from one computer to the next? My Mac is old and I want to put all my music to the new computer.

assuming all your media files are in the default location, copy the entire iTunes folder (not just the iTunes music or media) folder to the exact same location on the new machine.
you can use an external HD or your local network.

  • Transfer entire library from one CPU to another?

How do I transfer my entire library (purchased from iTunes and copied from CD's) to another computer. I tried copying it as a XLM file to a external HD but I received an error message telling me that not all of the files were located (none of them were).
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

Probably the most straightforward way to get iTunes onto your second computer is to network it with the first one and copy your iTunes folder across. Start by consolidating your library. When you consolidate, any songs in the iTunes Library that are not in the iTunes Music Folder are copied to the Music Folder and the Library is updated to point to those new files. Files already in the iTunes Music Folder have no changes made to them: Copying all your iTunes files to one location - Windows
Copying the whole folder brings with it the iTunes Music folder and also the iTunes Library (iTunes Library.itl in Windows) database file which holds all the information about your songs (Playlists, Ratings, Play Counts, Last Played, Date Added, etc). You'll get more information including the Folder/File structure in this article: What are the iTunes library files?
When you copy the iTunes folder make sure you put it into the default location on the new computer. On a PC this is \Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents\My Music\ (or C:\Username\Music\ in Vista). You should also use the same version of iTunes on both computers.
You can also use this method with an external hard drive, you drag the folder from the first computer to the external drive and then from the drive to the second computer.
If you have and iPod, some iPods can be used as an external drive and you can use them to move your iTunes (this option isn't available with the iPod Touch): How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer
If you have any iTunes purchases in your library don't forget that you'll need to authorise your new computer to play them. Also if you are disposing of the old one remember to deauthorise it so you don't use up one of your allowances: About iTunes Music Store Authorisation and Deauthorisation

  • How to batch convert entire library from raw to jpeg

I would like to know if it is possible to convert my entire iphoto library from mostly raw to jpeg and save as different library. The reason for this is ATV2 will only stream  8gigs at a time and it is annoying and inconvienent to go upstairs to change the selected album settings in itunes when viewing a different group of albums (my library is mostly raw files and tops out at about 300gigs. If entire library is selected ATV2 diisplays the library titles no problem but if attempting to view one it displays the loading gear wheel forever on the screen. I'm sure if I can convert the whole thing to jpeg and preserve the directory structure this will solve the problem as it will be  a much smaller file.
Thanks is advance for any thoughts on this.

I would like to know if it is possible to convert my entire iphoto library from mostly raw to jpeg and save as different library.
File -> Export and select Jpeg as the format. Apps like iPhoto2Disk or PhotoShare will help you export to a Folder tree matching your Events. You can then import that to an iPhoto Library.

  • Is there any way to transfer an entire library from an ipod to a new laptop (not just the purchases)?

My laptop was stolen that had my itunes installed and was synced with my ipod classic. I now have a new laptop. • How do I transfer my entire library from an old version of aperture (1.5)?

I need to transfer my entire aperture library from an old version of aperture (1.5) on my old imac (G5) to my new imac with Aperture (3.0).
I have got a backup in the form of a vault, but aperture 3.0 doesn't seem to be accepting that to create a full new library in 3.0.
Any ideas on how to transfer my library? cheers

    Incomplete information:
When i go to File>Vault> Restore Library, it does not recognise the vault as it was from a previous version of aperture and suggests that i 'import' the vault instead.
Fair enough. But when i try and import the vault, it shows the vault in that light grey colour, which means that i can see it, but it won't allow me to select..

  • Upgrading to 7.5 Completely Removed My Library From ITunes

I wanted to buy a new albumn last night on Itunes and was prompted by the Itunes store saying I was required to upgrade to 7.5 in order to order this albumn (apparently it wouldn't play otherwise?). Thinking I was safe, I said ok and did so.
I have 2 Ipods on this computer, each linked to its own separate windows account on my computer, and have never had issues in the past having 2 versions of iTunes with separate libraries, etc.
Now, after performing this upgrade, only 1 of my Ipods appear to have a library when I open up that window account's iTunes. So 1 Ipod/iTunes library is ok - the other not so much. While iTunes opens up for the 2nd one, it shows a completely blank library, no playlists, etc. I've had this iPod, playlists, etc, for years now, and if I've lost them and have to create new ones and/or add all my songs (3000+) back onto this iPod, I'm going to flip - this is absolutely ridiculous -i'm told I have to update my software to buy new music and now i've lost years worth of music and playlist management all because of this 'required' update.

iTunes uses 2 different library files: iTunes Library.itl is the actual database file that stores where the songs are on your computer and playlist/playcount info. There is also a file called iTunes Music Library.xml which has a lot of the same info, including song location and playlist info; you may be able to restore from this .xml file since the .itl file obviously got messed up in the upgrade.
I'm not sure this will work because whenever you close iTunes it saves the library, so this file may already be overwritten. In iTunes, go to File>Import; when the window opens, you should be in the My Music>iTunes folder; select the 'iTunes Music Library' file - this is the .xml file, not the 'iTunes Library.itl' file. Importing this way does take a really long time, but I have successfully restored my library including playlists this way.
Another option is searching for any .itl files on your computer - there might be an older .itl file you could restore to. You can either try searching your computer or open My Music>iTunes>Previous iTunes Libraries and see if there's an old library in there. Will probably be named 'iTunes Library 2007-11-07' or something similar - it will be dated whenever the last time you updated before this was.
You have 2 choices to open this file - the first is more permanent and faster in my opinion.
    1. Quit iTunes and then copy the old library file from the 'Previous iTunes Libraries' folder back into the iTunes folder in your My Music folder. Then rename this file 'iTunes Library.itl' - you want to replace the current 'iTunes Library' file which is blank. Then try opening iTunes again.
    2. Quit iTunes. Hold down the shift key and restart iTunes from the Start menu - not from the desktop icon - and keep holding the shift key down while it opens. When iTunes opens you should see a little window that asks if you want to create a new library or choose a new library - select choose library and you should be able to navigate to where this old library is and open it from there.
You can apparently keep 2 different libraries on one user - see http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iTunesWin/7.4/en/15502.html
    Hope this helps!

  • Lost Entire Library

My computer had a virus and I lost everything in my library-- I followed the instructions for re-installing the library but I still only have half of the songs I used to. I own an iPod Touch (second generation, I think). Is there any way I can plug it in without syncing it to my library to see if I can get my songs off of it? My iPod wants to sync every time I plug it in. All of my missing content is still on the iPod, so if I could somehow rip the songs from it and add them back to my library, it would help a lot. Thanks! (If you reply, could you give me instructions to getting the content off of my iPod, too?)

did not think that we were allowed to do back-ups of the music,
Certainly you're allowed. iTunes even encourages it; you get a message popping up when you purchase (at least for the first time).
anyway I've lost everyhting that I've bought. Is there a way with my history to get a second copy of my purchases, that I will make sure to back-up this time? Thank you
Sorry, but officially Apple does not allow redownloads of purchased items other than iPhone/iPod touch applications. It's your responsibility to make backup copies (as iTunes itself advises) in case something goes wrong with your system, as unfortunately it apparently did in your case, and you lose all the information on your hard drive. The official statement of their policy can be found here, among other places. If your hard drive was erased and you don't have a backup of your purchased items, and don't have them on an iPod, you're probably out of luck and will need to repurchase your tracks.
You can try contacting iTunes Store Customer Service (select the "Music Purchases" or "Video Purchases" category, as appropriate, then "Lost or Missing Items". Then you'll see a button that says "Email Us") and explaining what happened. Reportedly in some cases Apple has allowed redownloading on a one-time basis. But don't count on it; they're not obligated to do so.
    Good luck.
BTW, for future posts, it's better to ask a question as a new topic rather than tagging onto another poster's thread. It's rather impolite to clutter up someone else's thread with your issues, especially since the original poster might be subscribed to the thread and getting emails when someone replies. Regards.

  • OmG! Lost entire library, playlists, ratings - last action taken was downloading album from Amazon, using Amazon mp3 downloader...  I have a backup drive, but I don't know what to do.  Please help!

I used the Amazon downloader for the first time last night.  Today, my entire itunes library vanished:  ITunes opened as if it were a brand new installation, with no content at all.  I had a very large library.  I had 50 playlists. I had many purchased songs from iTunes.  None of it is in iTunes right now.
    I have two problems.
First, I want to know how and why this happened.
Second, I want to know how to restore my iTunes library and iTunes data (ratings, playlists, etc) into iTunes.
I have an HP Simple Save drive that is hooked up to the computer, and presumably backed up the iTunes data.  I don't know how to restore it though, and I don't know why this happened.
Please, dear iTunes Gurus, help me fix this!

    beckijc wrote:
now do I have to do that everytime i open it? or should i change it somehow?
No, you should not have to do it everytinme.
However, as part of your regular backup plan (you do have one, yes?) make sure to backup the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder.

  • Lost Entire Library w/o Back-up

I had some issues with my computer and it had to be restored. I had never backed up any of my iTunes and I don't have an iPod and I don't have an MP3 player. Is there anyway I can get my library back? In addition when I try to download iTunes again it won't let me. It looks like it completely downloads and then it takes me back to the download screen. When I try to get in I can't. I'm not sure what other information you need: I'm using Windows XP and I have close to 600 songs in my library. I know the chances of me getting back my library are slim but I'm hoping you might have a suggestion for me. Thank you so much.

Maybe a well constructed email plea to the iTMS explaining your situation and promising that you have learned the value of backups and will do so from now on, may get you a second chance at a download:
