Upgraded to latest iTunes & lost my library

Since upgrading to the latest iTunes, it has lost all my library settings.
All songs are still on disk, and other users on the same XP SP3 machine have not experienced this problem.
- When I log into XP as my user, then bring up iTunes, the entire music and apps list is now blank. The music lists are still there however (but also blank).
- When my kids log into the same XP as their user, their iTunes are up to date
I need all my ratings and play counts back (years worth of work). Getting the songs in is easy and not the problem.
What's the fix?

I had not, but thank you very much, that worked (yes, it took me this long to get to it, )
I never would have thought to google for the terms in the link you provided and my searches were not bearing fruit. Since it had been a while, I had to google for it again to find this thread, and only got here when I added my username and the site.
I upgraded to version 10, the latest, per instructions, and it seems happy.
Looks like a reasonably common issue as I've pointed several coworkers at this thread.
Thanks again!

  • Upgrade to latest Itunes created havoc with my library!

Has anyone else experienced this problem? I upgraded to latest Itunes and about 800 of my songs lost their association from the computer to the library and the songs wouldn't play. With more investigation, many are purchases saved on the cloud or CDs I imported but they must be stored on the cloud because there are no files on my computer so I had to reload a ton of music. Also had to delete purchased songs from my library to allow me to re-download them, another time consuming activity that I didn't plan to spend my time on today. Wondering if others are also having this problem and how to communicate it to Apple so they are aware?  Happy holidays.

  • Upgraded to latest Itunes - won't recognize songs in my external drive?

I recently upgraded to the latest Itunes. I store all my music on an external hard drive. Now I can't seem to get the Itunes library to pull songs from the hard drive - getting the message "The song __ could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" I didn't have this problem before. I tried importing the songs from the hard drive but now my library has doubled and I'm still having problems launching music. Anyone have any input? Thanks in advance.

No, my problem is when I open iTunes, none of my tunes are there because the new iTunes 8.1 looks into my hard drive iTunes for the library and it's blank. when I use preferences/advanced and choose "change" and attempt to select the library from my external drive, it's greyed out . . . not accessible.

  • I need to remove ALL trace of iPod & iTunes to upgrade to latest iTunes?

Attempting to upgrade to the latest iTunes, from the one I've been running that I hadn't upgraded for some years.
The message comes back that an auto update isn't possible and that I must remove the old version in it's entirety prior to trying again.
So I followed the instructions on the website here and have removed everything from my c/programs directory.
However there is still an iPod for Windows 2005, an iPod software updater and iTunes itself showing in the Add/Remove programs area of the Control Panel, and when I try to remove these nothing happens. These entries don't even have any info associated with them in terms of file size, but I can't get rid of them.
    I have also removed Quicktime.
At my wits end, it seems this stuff is embedded in my PC somewhere and now I have no iTunes and can't download the latest version.
Please help if you have any input, it would really be appreciated.
    Thanks, DJ.

This depends on how you have the ipod set to update. You can change the way it updates by going to edit>preferences>iPOd tab
By default the ipod is set to "Auto update ALL". If you goto the ipod tab and check "Only update checked songs" Only songs with a check mark beside them will be updated to the iPod. If you uncheck a song, the next time you update the ipod the song is removed.
You can also goto the iPod tab and set it to "AUto update SELECT" with this option only songs in the playlist you pick are updated. this is very helpful for people with a nano or a library thats larger than there ipod can hold.
"Manual update" is where you manually add songs and delete them off the ipod. This option is usually helpful to people who want to control everything on there ipod or frequently connect there ipod to more than one PC.
You can also go there the sub tabs on the iPod tab and set each to different things, Like leave the ipod to "Auto update ALL" but goto the podcast tab and set it to manual update or the video tab...just whatever you want or need to do

  • HT201210 Cant upgrade to iso 7, says I need an upgrade to latest itunes but it is the latest

    Any help in upgrading availible?

The latest iTunes is 11.1. For some people, iTunes is incorrectly reporting 11.0.5 is the latest. Download 11.1 at http://apple.com/itunes/download/.

  • Upgraded to latest iTunes & now cant buy albums!

I can purchase single tracks but cant buy albums. I forces me to billing info saying 'account has changed' go in there, update switch card with CCV numbers click OK but no download starts. So select buy again and the billing screen comes up again.
Annoying or what, cash ready, 2 albums to buy, DOESN'T WORK.

This ties into another post about the 'authorisation loop' looks like MANY people are getting this after update to latest Itunes.
I guess Apple will loose sales, as people get fed up with the constant loop and will give up....like me.

  • HELP!!  Upgraded to latest Itunes, now cannot import CDs!!!

Was doing fine, enjoying my new Ipod, building music library for first time. Then I upgraded and now I can no longer import music.
I ran diagnostics as suggested in other thread on problems burning CD, which shows that the computer is not recognizing my CD drive anymore. And in My Computer...it does not show that there is an audio cd in the drive.
What is going on that Itunes is causing the computer not to recognize the drive? I read that there is a work around for the immediate problem of beginning the import in windows media player---but is there a way of backing out of this version of Itunes that is clearly problematic? I really regret upgrading.
Itunes diagnostic is below which shows drive is "empty" when there is a CD in it.
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 1 (Build 2600)

If you have multiple drives on the same IDE or SCSI bus, these drives may interfere with each other.
Some computers need an update to the ATA or IDE bus driver, or Intel chipset. If iTunes has problems recognizing CDs or hanging or crashing while importing or burning CDs, check the support site for the manufacturer of your computer or motherboard.

    "+itunes frequently renders CD/DVD burners useless...+"
"Frequently"?! Do you know why (and what can be done about it)?
I'd love to have itunes on my PC and throw 'em $$ for downloads, but I haven't had any luck so far. And, frankly, I'd rather have my drive and burner working and be itunes-less than the other way around...
EDIT: I asked in an already existing thread with no luck:

  • Upgrading to latest itunes and ipod software kills ipod

Today my son has upgraded his itunes (on XP laptop) and ipod software to the latest versions. He has a 120 GB iPod classic and we've all been using ipods/itunes for many years. Since installing the updates he has been unable to synch his ipod. When we plug the ipod into the laptop it comes back with the error message "The ipod 'name' cannot be synched. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable". I have then tried to follow all of the trouble-shooting advice on the Apple website including the 5 Rs. The first 4 didn't fix the problem and when I got to no 5 (RESTORE) this wouldn't work either. The restore software downloaded from the site but after looking like it was going to proceed, iTunes returned another error message "<sons name> iPod cannot be restored because it contains files that are in use by another application". I checked that it wasn't trying to synch at the same time as restoring and could see no obvious reason why the restore wouldn't work. I am now at a complete loss as to what to do next. Can anyone help? I am surprised that there is nowhere on the Apple support site where you can find a list of all error messages and what you should do in response. Well not one that I could find anyway! Hope someone out there can shed some light.

Try putting the iPod in disk mode before connecting it.
    1. Reset the iPod by pressing and holding the Menu and Select buttons simultaneously until it reboots.
    2. Press and hold the Select and Play/Pause buttons simultaneously for several seconds until the display changes. I believe it will say something like "Okay to disconnect." Then connect the iPod to your computer.

  • Updated to latest iTunes version now library is gone

    Help
I updated my iTunes this morning to the latest version 7.1.0.59
Now ALL the songs in my library are gone. Why did this happen and is there NO way to get the songs on my iPOD back to the iTunes library????

Well, it's possible that it's in a different location on your computer than "My Music".
You might want to try searching your computer for "iTunes" (a lot of results might come up, but just look for a folder called "iTunes", not all of the installation files).
If that doesn't seem to turn up anything, then the best idea would be to transfer the content from your iPod to your computer.
First, you'll need to prevent iTunes from automatically syncing with your iPod and deleting everything off of it.
To do that, follow these steps:
    1 - Open iTunes.
2 - Connect your iPod to your computer.
3 - Basically as soon as your iPod begins to display "Do Not Disconnect", begin to press and hold the Shift and Ctrl keys on your keyboard together simultaneously.
Continue to hold these keys for about 20 seconds after your iPod is showing up in the Source List in iTunes.
After you've done this, click on your iPod's name in the Source List, and under the "Summary" tab, tick the "Manually manage" option for your iPod. Click the “Apply” button in the bottom-right corner to save your changes.
    Now onto the transferring.
There are a few different ways to copy your iPod's songs to your computer, but probably the most straightforward method is to download a third-party program that can copy the songs from your iPod to your computer.
I would suggest that you try YamiPod. It's free, and I've heard it recommended a lot.

  • ITunes "lost" music library, playlists...

...Did an add folder to library and it appears that everything shows up in iTunes (can never be sure), but lost all playlists, album titles for audio books that were added after downloaded, and any information I manually added to music/audiobooks after they were downloaded... Why would iTunes drop an entire library. Nothing changed in terms of location of library (on ext HD), configuration of pc (winxp)
Big question - any way to reestablish playlists without having to manually recreate?

I have a similar issue. But my "my music" folder was moved from my docs to "c" - because my office server was backing up my library. I can always reload the music (by adding the folder to the library). The music all re-appears in I-Tunes, but all of my playlists are gone. This happens to me at least every two weeks, particularly if I am working away from the office.
Would love to be able to re-establish my playlists w/o manually re-creating as well (which I must have done at least 5 times already)...

  • HELP! Just upgraded to latest iTunes and some Preferences are missing???

    Hi folks. First post here.
I have a Dell Desktop that's provided by my company as my own office computer.
I don;t have access to updating or downloading programs, as all of that is handled by the corporation from a remote loctaion.
The other day I requested they upgrade me to the latest version of iTunes, as mine was a couple of years old.
They did so, and I am now getting used to the new version.
Here's my problem: some of the functions I had grown acustomed to seem to be missing. If they are included in my version, I sure can't find them nor can figure out where they're hiding!
Specifically, I cannot find anyway to manually select what format I'd like to import music files into, nor can I choose the parameters on how I'd liek to convert existingt files.
For instance, I have some large MP3 files (192 KPS), that I need to convert to 128 KPS versions for the purpose of e-mailing them at a smaller size. I cannot change the parameters on this.
If I hit "Convert to MP3" while on a selected file, it automatically does it at 160 KPS, which I assume is the default.
In the older version of iTunes, I'd just go to Preferences, tab down to Advanced, and there I'd be offered a chance to select all sorts of options (WAV, AIFF, various compression rates of MP3, etc...).
Now, although iTunes Help tells me that's still where I'd find those controls, when I go to Preferences and select "Advanced", I get only the most basic functions, none opf which mention Importing or Converting whatsoever.
They're not visible, but grayed out - they're not even there!
    What am I missing?
How can I locat these controls?
I need to have the option of changing the manner in which I import or convert files regularly to fit different needs, and I can't fathom that I'd be able to get much use out of iTunes without that ability.
If ANYONE out there can help me with this, or has experienced a similar problem, please let me knwo. This is driving me crazy...
    Best,
    Peter
