Upgraded to Lion. Error turning off Legacy File Vault

I want to use the new file vault so homefolder files are encrypted in my time machine backup. When I was prompted in System Preferences, I chose to "turn off legacy file vault." After the passwords, etc., the system works for a while and has just returned an error message, something to the effect "an error has occured. Legacy File Vault will not be turned off." How do I get Legacy File Vault turned off (e.g, unencrypt the drive?)
Thanks.

- open the account (so that the Home is decrypted)
- make a copy of Home folder
- set a new temporary account (Admin)
- restart with this new temporary account
- remove the original Home folder, then remove the original account (via System Preferences - Users & Groups)
- rename the copy with the original name
- add a new account with the same original name via Users & Groups), that is recreated the deleted account
The system ask you if you want to use the existent Folder with the same - OK
At voila you have the account decrypted

  • How can I turn off legacy file vault when it needs additional 170 GB free on a HD that is only 250 GB?

I am trying to migrate to a new Macbook Pro (OSX 10.8.3) and I cannot migrate files over from my prior Macbook Pro (OSX 10.7.5) because of legacy file vault being on. When I try to turn off Legacy Filevault on old computer, it says I need to free up 170 GB of HD space. I only have a 250 GB HD to begin with! I don't see how I can possibly free up that much space. I need help!

Use a external storage drive and copy all your users files there, then Trash > Empty Trash the originals, then reboot and try Filevault again.
    Most commonly used backup methods
Note that any +4GB sized files will not transfer to a FAT32/MSDOS external drive many are formatted too.
You first need to change the format of the drive and in doing so, will erase all data on it.
    Drives, partitions, formatting w/Mac's + PC's

  • Can't turn off Legacy Filevault

I have an iMac with 2 "legacy" filevault accounts from Snow Leopard.
I turned off legacy filevault on one of the two accounts, but the second account, which is a portable home directory, always generates an error during the decryption process. I have tried repairing disk permissions, rebooting etc, nothing works.
Any and all suggestions are welcome!

Your Quicken files should already be in the correct format.  Can't remember details because I converted some time ago and no longer have my old files.
Can't understand your comment about being left "high and dry."  It's been common knowledge for six months that Lion won't support PPC applications and it's been common knowledge for several years that Intuit is abandoning the Mac.
I will warn you that, even if you are able to convert now, the conversion does produce errors.

is there a way to stop it in the middle so it does not go through the whole process

It's called, "FileVault." If there is no option to stop the process, then the best bet would be to wait until decrypting is finished. Otherwise you run the risk of borking the whole thing. It's hard to imagine how you can accidentally turn off FileVault.

Legacy is an encrypted disk image of your Home folder, FileVault2 is whole disk encryption

  • Problem turning off legacy filevault.

    Hey everyone,
I began the process of switching over to the new filevault, but have encountered a problem turning off the legacy vault. Everything seemed to be goin well, at first. It took about 30 minutes for copying to complete during decryption. However, it has been hung up at "copying is complete..." for nearly 12 hours now and is showing no signs of moving on. I have received no errors. What can I do to maybe kick start the process again or should I just do a forced shutdown. Any help here would be greatly appreciated because at this point I honestly don't know if I have any other option than a forced shutdown.
    Thanks

Ok, so I'm answering my own question here but it worked. I ended up doing a forced shutdown (holding down the power button until shut down initializes) from the screen indicating that "copying is complete..." When I restarted (manual restart using the power button again) the legacy vault was off and the new file vault was on and working properly. No data or settings were lost and everything was working properly.
Thank you to all of you who took the time to look at my initial question even if you didn't have an answer for it.

  • Safe to disable legacy file vault in Mountain Lion?

Have an iMac with Mountain Lion installed and everytime it's logged off or rebooted it hangs at a File Vault backup screen.  I did some research and found File Vault will only backup home folder when logged off or while rebooting.  Since the home folder is huge it's probably just taking its time.
When I went into security preferences an alert popped up saying it was using Legacy FileVault.  Is it OK to disable this?
Also, is the home folder not being backed up by TimeMachine during normal backups since it's FileVault?
Any suggestions or guidance would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

Thanks a lot for your suggestion to report with Apple. In fact, this would be so easy to enable or disable it globaky from the system preferences, and or make it available from within the application preferences. In that way, each of us would be able to manage witch app is doing what.
If this is it, maybe we could ask Apple to give us some more room to manage our files.
    Thank again.
    Regards.

  • By upgrading to lion will it delete your files from snow leopard

I want to upgrade to lion, but i still have my files on snow leaoprd. If i upgrade, will i lose my personal files?

No. Lion does not erase your files. It will upgrade your Snow Leopard system files. You should do the following prior to installing Lion:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Create a bootable clone: Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means an external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.

  • 49 Service Error - Turn Off then On - LaserJet Pro 200 M276nw

I was adding to another post for a different printer but didn't want anyone with MY printer to MISS this problem.
***UPDATE*** (at least for my LaserJet Pro 200 M276nw)
I have found the root cause but will need further assistance from someone at HP to "solve" this one....
My new M276nw keeps throwing a 49 Service Error, chat support yielded alot of power off, power on, wait, try again blah blah blah, fuser problems blah blah. 10 minutes of forum searching put me onto possible wireless networking issues with other printers and SSID's. Anyway after returning one printer to Staples and having the problem come up again on a another brand new one....Tried Forum searching & Tada! at least I got to find a root cause.
I have a D-Link DIR-825 wireless router. It has dual band (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz).
Normally I have both enabled for the myriad of devices that people have these days in my home.
I updated the firmware to the latest update (20121026) then restarted.
Received the 49 Service Error shortly after restart.
Then I disabled both bands to test each wireless band independently.
The printer acted normally so I decided to enable each band seperately.
When I enable the 2.4 GHz band in the router, the printer immediately throws a 49 Service Error.
I tested this several times (5 to be exact) and each time during the router reboot the printer indicated the error.
So I left the 2.4 GHz band disabled and went on to the 5 GHz band.
I enabled the 5 GHz band 3 times and disabled it and found no effect on the printer (at least within a 5 minute window).
So now I'm left with only a single band wireless router or a printer that likes to restart itself every 20 minutes or so.
There is probably a setting (or 2) that can be tweaked in either the router or the printer that can prevent this (I hope).
I just need to find the right HP person............
    This question was solved.

I really wish I could help but I am afraid this is a bit beyond my level of comprehension.  What I took from this was, you have to turn off the duel band feature to get the printer to work without that error message, correct?  The User Guide may help you but when I tried to read it my mind was blown away by just how many settings could be adjusted to fit your needs.  No need to do anything troulbeshooting-wise just yet.  All I need for you to do is look at page 137 on how to set sleep delay and auto power down functions and page 132 for link and duplex settings and let me know if you think it could be something to do with these.
As far as a setting within the router, I do not know.  I did find another user guide with very technical information in it. The Software Technical Reference hinted to bi-directional printing which basically turns off or on the print spooler if the printer was so big it was using up network resources but I am not sure of that at all (see Page 59 for an example). Page 89 and on is a brief introduction to the embedded web server but really these are just definitions, nothing new to report there.
This website hints that it may be a firmware error. Lastly, the only other thing I can offer as you have probably seen it yourself is another HP forum thread regarding your exact error.  I know I won't be of much assistance but some hopefully is better than none. I'm just glad it works partially.  Let me know if I can answer any questions for you but this is just a step out of my league. Good luck!
Don't forgot to say thanks by giving "Kudos" if I helped solve your problem.

  • Need additional space to turn off legacy FileVault?

I have a 320GB HD but the finder says I have almost 500GB of data which is impossible.  The about this mac tells me that I have 2GB free. I moved 100GB of items to the trash then emptied the trash and it still tells me I have 2GB free.  I recently upgraded to lion and when I go to deactivate legacy filevault as I am guessing that is the issue it tells me I need additional space? How can I use an external HD to fix this issue?  Can I just delete the sparsebundle that is 200GB?

Okay, I was under the impression that you had to deactivate any legacy/previous version of Filevault before you installed Lion. I don't believe that the two versions are in anyway compatible.
Do you have a backup of your prior SL volume?

  • How to turn off "Copy Files on Import"

I'm new to Photoshop Elements 9 and the Organizer.  I'm trying to import my pictures into the organizer but I don't want to copy the file from the network drive to my local Macbook hard drive.  Unfortunately I can't figure out how to turn off the "Copy Files on Import" checkbox.
From within the Organizer I am selecting:
File -> Get Photos and Videos -> From Files and Folder
This opens a Finder window and I can navigate to the network drive, select the source folder, and select the files I want to import.  I just can't seem to figure out how to disable the "Copy Files on Import" option.  Is there something in Prefences that I need to change to allow me the option?
    Thanks,
    Vince

    From the PSE9 help :
    Add files from specific folders
In the Elements Organizer, from the Display menu, select Folder Location. The folder hierarchy panel opens on the left side of the Media Browser.
In the folder hierarchy panel, browse to the folder containing the files you want to import.
Right-click/Control-click the folder, and choose Import To Organizer. The Getting Photos dialog box will report whether files were imported.
    Click OK.
If files were imported, the folder’s icon changes from an Unmanaged Folder icon to a Managed Folder icon .
