Upgraded to Lion, my iMac early 2009 freeze several times a day
Hi all,
Since my upgrade to Lion (1.6.8 -> 1.7.3 and now 1.7.4), my iMac 2009 freeze several times a day.
the screen (wallpaper and windows) change of color ... i saw some artifacts and ... a moment, my mouse stops to move, my only way is to reboot my iMac.
before my upgrade, my iMac ran a week without a reboot .. :-!
In addition to having adequate RAM did you repair disk permissions after the updates? If not then please run Disk Utility (Applications - Utilities - Disk Utility) and run Repair Disk Permissions, I would recommend doing so 2x. If you see messages, you can normally disregard them per Apple's Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions messages that you can safely ignore advice letter.

IMac Freezing Several Times a Day
My iMac is freezing several times a day. It started out just when I went to wake it from sleep in the morning, but now it is more often. I read about similar issues on the discussion boards and have taken the following actions: I have gone into Disk Utility and run "Verify Disk" and received "The volume Macintosh HD appears to be ok." I also used the Activity Monitor to check CPU activity, RAM availability, Hard Disk availability, etc. and everything seems fine there (57.4 GB open). However, when I checked Console Messages, there have been none since 1/16 at 4:37pm. It has been over a month since the freezing issue has been going on (& becoming more frequent) so I wonder if there is a relation/cause there? Any help welcome -- thanks!

Hello, see how many of these you can answer...
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free Disk space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open console in Applications>Utilities, check the system log for the date/time of the last problem & the Startup right after that for clues.
In the Memory tab of Activity Monitor, are there a lot of Pageouts? -
Firefox freezes several times a day on my Imac so that I have to close it by force quit.
I have used several versions of firefox and each one freezes several times each day on my Imac. The only add on I use is the Ebay sidebar. When Firefox freezes the only answer is to "force Quit".
I do not have this problem with any other search engine (safari, opera,chrome).http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firefox_hangs

My MBP "13 freezes several times a day
My MBP "13 freezes several times a day. Suddenly the spinning ball apears fro 2-3 minutes, then disappear for 30 secs and re-appearing for 2 minutes. There seam to be no pattern in which software is running at the time this occours. I have just installed new RAM and I have 150 gig available on my 500 gig HDD.
Anyone?
G:-)Hey,
My advise would be to open Activity monitor, look at what takes up the most threads while you're working normally. See if there are any background apps causing overloads, also look at how much of the RAM is being addressed in the system memory tab.
Alternatively if you find that very little of the computers CPU is being used and in this case i would advise verifying and repairing your disk permissions through Disk Utility
Finally if this doesn't fix your issue, you may be looking at a software issue. Are you running 10.8? Upgrading may address and fix your issue.
350GB is still a fair amount of information for the computer to process. You can also move your non immediate date onto an external harddrive to save internal space. Things like iphoto library, itunes library, films and
i agree with clintonfrombirmingham it could be signs of a failing harddrive. Make a backup and see Apple. -
My microphone doesn't work after installing lion on iMac early 2009
Hello,
I've just installed LION and everthing seems to be OK except the microphone, it doesn't work on skype, imovie.
I have an Imac early 2009.
Will this bug be fixed in the next 10.7.1?
Please if you can help me,
ThanksIf it suggests that you install iPhoto again, install iPhoto again. In your Macs Box that it came in there should be 2 Discs, one is an Applications CD (You need this one) And another is the Mac OS X.
Insert your Applications CD and hold C while the computer is starting up, then you will be walked through the installation of Applications. -
Why iMac early 2009 beep 3 times?
I want to upgrade the ram of my 24 inch iMac (early 2009. It currently has two PC3 DDR3 1066 2GB running it. I bought a pair of PC3 DDR3 1066 4GB as Apple suggests on its support page. Even though everything is it should, every time I install the new ones and try to start up my computer it makes three beeps. I've read that this is a hardware error but I am sure I have the right spects on new ones, what can I do?
Here is the correct RAM and specs for your early 2009 iMac.

IMac early 2009 freezes and monitor is flickering
Hello,
After being a Macuser for about 25 years, i now have a question.
After a while my old iMac (iMac (24-inch Early 2009), OS X Yosemite (10.10.2), 2,93 Ghz, 8 GB RAM, GeForce GT120) suddenly freezes and the Monitor starts flickering. The upper half is flickering and the lower half is black.
Only way to get back to it, is to do a hard reset by holding the Power button for a while. Then it starts up normal. Sometimes it asks for sending a Crashreport sometimes not.
Does anybody have an idea?
Cheers,
ThomasDifficult to say, run Apple's Hardware Test in extended mode 2-3 times back to back. The reason to run it multiple times is AHT does not always find errors after the 1-2nd pass, however when it does they are correct. If errors are found, take it in for service.

Is there something to do to speed-up the iMac?same issues and not sure how else to speed up my system. Anyone? Please help! It's killing me.

IMac (Early 2009) freezes at Apple Logo
Hi Everyone,
This is my first post, and I'm going to be as detailed as possible here.
_Background Information_
I work in a public school system, and we have a lab of 20-inch Early 2009 iMacs currently running 10.5.8 as well as Windows XP via Bootcamp (running CAD software). Being that these machines are at a high school, we have a firmware password set so that students can't go in and mess around.
Recently, a few of these machines have been freezing at the gray Apple logo during startup. I've been able to fix them by doing the following:
-Boot to install disc
-Remove firmware password and restart
-Reset the PRAM
-Boot to install disc and reset firmware password
This fixes the issue. I recently also ARD'ed a permission repair and disk verify to the whole lab to see if that helps stop the issue from recurring.
_My Current Issue_
I have one machine that is currently doing the same thing: it boots to the gray Apple logo and freezes before it reaches the spinning gear. I was ready to perform the above procedure to fix it, however, I have a second problem: the optical drive is malfunctioning. When I insert any disc, the drive makes a loud clicking sound and attempts to eject the disc (at which point it gets stuck and I have to physically pull on it to get it out).
Because of the firmware password in place, I can't perform a Safe Boot, PRAM reset, verbose or single-user boot, etc. I CAN, however, get to the Startup Manager with an option boot.
*Here is the troubleshooting I have done so far.* And the issue only gets weirder...
-Unplugged everything and booted with a minimal system. Hangs at Apple logo.
-Put an install disc in my Macbook Pro, booted that into Target Disk mode, connected it to the iMac via Firewire, and tried Option-booting the iMac to the install disc that way. Here, it gets to the Apple logo with the spinning gear, and shortly afterward, it freezes (spinning gear still visible but not moving).
-I tried also booting to the internal HD of my Macbook Pro with the above method with the same result. Hangs at frozen spinning gear.
-Option-booting to a DeployStudio flash drive to hopefully at least get to Disk Utility. iMac still freezes at the spinning gear stage.
-Option-booting to the Windows XP side. It freezes during the "Loading Windows" screen.
I am beginning to run out of ideas. I am an Apple Certified Macintosh technician, so it is possible for me to replace the optical drive... but I'm hoping that there is something I haven't thought of yet which can fix it without me having to open the machine. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks!
- MattUPDATE:
Shortly after I posted this, I realized the one thing that I hadn't tried yet. I removed one of the two sticks of RAM, then booted the machine and was able to immediately reset the PRAM. At that point, the machine booted normally. I shut it down, re-added the RAM chip, and booted normally again.
Looks like it's all set for now. -
"pages" freezes repeatedly during the day on my iPad. is tgere a patch, a fix?
Try quitting Pages then reset the iPad.
Double click the Home button to show the screen with running and recently used apps. Each app icon will have a sample page above it. Flick up on the page (not the app icon) and the page will fly away and the app icon will disappear. This quits that app.
Then reset your iPad. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. See if that fixes your problem. -
Gwia abends or freezes several times a day - imap ssl
Hello,
current system - NW6.5 sp8 - 3 node cluster - GW8.0.3 hp3 - gwia running in it's own address space
Our GW install had been stable for long time running 8.0.2 hp3. Then two changes were made to support some new clients that required IMAP and SMTP in a secure way.
On Gwia, IMAP SSL was set to required and SMTP SSL was set to enabled. In gwia.cfg the /forceinboundauth was added. So now, any host sending SMTP to gwia must authenticate.
Things went OK for a while but the number of clients connecting via Imap/SMTP has increased and problems started. Gwia would freeze or abend and had to be restarted. I upgraded to gw8.0.3 hp3 which as far as I know is the latest available version. But the abends and problems continue. Here is an example of an abend -
14/06/2013 17:25:21 : SERVER-5.70-2187 [nmID=D0006]
Removed address space because of memory protection violation
Address Space: GWIA
Reason: Page Fault, Attempt to write to non-present page
Running Thread: GWIMAP-SSL-Handler_5
EIP: 0xF53125BD (LIBC.NLM + 0x945BD)
Access Location
I have been watching the gwia address space from monitor and it grows quite large. When gwia first loads the allocated space is 8MB, after a short while it grow rapidly to 50MB. I have seen it at 200MB+.
Any ideas what I can do?
Regards,
PaulBob,
Finally the our GW (8.0.3) is running on linux (oes11.1). That has fixed it, the gwia keeps running with exactly the same IMAP users/clients/load etc. So far it has been running for 3.5 days. I kept the 'IMAP service' going on NetWare by having a cron job that ran twice a hour, it unloaded and then reloaded the gwia. It would take ages to shut down and unload but would get there eventually. In the last few days before the migration I had to change the cron job to kick gwia three times an hour as it would not last the 30 minutes!
Regards,
Paul

Second, GW 8 on NetWare is, in my experience, not nearly as stable / robust as on Linux. We consolidated from 5 NW servers to a single ( same class ) Linux system and both increased performance and greatly improved stability. As a half step, you can easily run just the GWIA on a Linux VM to "outsource" the abends. And on Linux when an agent dies, you can rig it to auto restart so user's have no idea its happening.

Firefox freezes several times a day
Support page says to just restart Firefox, which I've been doing via Force Quit since there's no other way. But this is happening every 1-2 hours, which is just unacceptable for prolonged work. It doesn't matter what site I'm on or what I'm doing when it happens. First multi-touch scrolling stops working, then I realize I can't click on anything, then I realize I can't change tabs. What causes this and is there a way to fix it? I love FF 4 otherwise so I don't want to go back.
EDIT: I submitted this right after FF had frozen and I restarted. Fifteen minutes later, it did it again.I have used Firefox since it first came out, and always loved it. Firefox 4.0.1 is a different story. This must be one of the worst software upgrades across the board, of any software package I have ever used. I have stuck with it for a few weeks, and I have now finally given up.
Constant crashes, constant freezes, many plugins no longer work, my favorite among them, i.e PDF plugin to see PDF files inside the browser. AppTabs disappear over and over.
I have downgraded back to 3.6.17 and hope things will be better again. -
Mac pro freezes several times a day
My Mac pro is running slowly and get the pinwheel often. It also freezes at least once a day.
First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive may be failing.
If you have more than ten or so files or folders on your Desktop, move them, temporarily at least, somewhere else in your home folder.
If iCloud is enabled, disable it.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard, mouse, and monitor, if applicable. Launch the usual set of applications you use when you notice the problem.
Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
Select the CPU tab.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Step 2
You must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way as above. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Post the 50 or so most recent messages in the log — the text, please, not a screenshot.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out before posting. -
My Macbook pro freezes several times a day, help.
My MacBook Pro freezes way too much. It just randomly freezes, whether it be when I'm surfing the web, or I casually move it, it just freezes, and I have no idea what to do. Should I take it to the apple store?
if it happens often while surfing the web its probably flash that is slowing it down open safari then choose safari extensions and install the click to flash plug in it should fix your problem another reason why that could happen is when your computer gets to warm
open the activity monitor programm and check under the processes once in a while if you see the processs kernel root using up a 400 percent of your cpu right before or during the crash then thats the reason, which means your computer is getting to hot
try preventing that by putting it on two books so air can reach the underside of your macbook -
Mail hangs (freezes) several times each day
I have included the console log in hope that someone can make sense of why this behaviour has begun. I was completely stable in Mail until shortly after about two months of using Mail in Mavericks.

Are you running any #3rd party applications as well?
If a proprietary (Apple) application "locks up"... it should not bring down the whole system; rather, one should be able to force quit the application that only appears to be hanging the entire system (press option, command & esc keys for the "Force Quit" application menu).
After a force quit of a proprietary application, it then should open right back up without a reboot. The system should not hang. For example, if Safari does "hang" w/a spinning beachball & you force quit that & then fire it up again -- as opposed to a machine that completely "locks up" as you say... that term is usually reserved for when absolutely everything is frozen which calls for the radical power-button force shutdown.
