Upgraded to Mac Pro- What should I change in FCP to use all 8 cores?

Hi
I went from a G5 to a new Mac Pro. What settings should I change to make sure I can take advantage of the speed from the 8 cores and 6 gigs of Ram and new Nvidia graphics card?
Thanks

There's little to do on that front. FCP will use what it can all by itself. Might look into a virtual cluster though for Compressor. Use the QMaster control panel to set this up... read on it here: http://www.macworld.com/article/49047/2006/01/marcchreateside.html

  • Please help to upgrade my Mac Pro

I am a graphic designer. I start doing freelance job at home. I do a lot of photoshop work. I read on this and other forums to learn how to upgrade my Mac Pro. I am not a tech person at all. Please give me advise.
    1) I need to have a backup system. I am thinking of OWC Mercury Elite-AL Pro. But how can I connect this to the airport extreme and my Mac Pro as a backup and storage drive for both computers? My Mac Pro has no airport card, and the extreme has only one USB port which was connect to the printer.
    2) I need more memory. I only has 2 GB now. They are 4x512 MB located at Riser A. I am thinking to buy the memory from OWC together with the external hard drive.
    3) After I do my back up on my Mac Pro. I will upgrade the OS to Snow Leopard. Should I also add another internal hard drive? I only have 250 GB on my Mac Pro
    Thank you.

Your Mac is 4 yrs old. Sure you want to invest in it? for someone beginning to do a lot of work in CS4 etc.

i have a problem with my Macbook Pro. When i tried to open it, something appeared : "enter your system lock PIN code to unlock this Mac". What should i do?

Question is did you lock your Mac from Find my iPhone using iCloud or is the Macbook really yours?
If you have in fact locked your Mac using Find my iPhone on iCloud then you will need to enter the PIN you have set when you locked the Mac.
*If you have not iniate the remote Lock then someone else has used your Apple ID and Password to lock your mac.

  • Why can´t I upgrade my Mac Pro to OS Mountain Lion?

Being a person with great interest in photography, video and moviemaking I made a big personal investment a couple of years ago in buying what I thought was the best available computer on the market for multimedia projects for the time being, that is a well equiped Mac Pro (Processor 2x3 Ghz Quad-Core Intel Xeon with Memory 8 GB 667 Mhz DDR2 FB-DIMM). After that I also upgraded my Mac Pro with a better graphic card (ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB) and extra HDD´s Up till now there has been no problem to upgrade my computer to every new realesed OS software  (latest OS X Lion 10.7.04) from Apple, but when recently trying to download the latest version of OSX, that is Mountain Lion, this posibility seems to have come to an endpoint! When I try to upgrade to Mountain Lion, I get the message that this is not possible with my Mac Pro (in which I for sure totally up til now have invested at least 70-80 000 swedish kronor (10 - 12 000 dollars).
Is this really so, and if so, why has Apple in this way seemingly abandoned all those earlier loyal customers over the world who by investing their money in Apple´s Pro line of products like Mac Pro´s, have contributed so much in building the good reputation and economic ground for the development of Apple in becoming such a sucessful company? Even if Mac Pro still is a strong and competive computer for the time being, this discontinuation of softwaresupport for the big stock of sold Mac Pro computers world wide, remarks a crossroad from where in the long run, Mac pro´s will become useless and therefore also worthless in such an extent that heir owners once more have to make investments in new hardware from Apple, taking for granted that they find it still being a value in being trustful to the Apple line of computer products.
While a company as a rule always willl find ways to make investments in new hardware of great quality if this is calculated to increase the income of the company, the sitaution is totally different for all independent and creative people over the world who have a much lower budget for their projects and as a rule get no profit from their work but their personal joy and emotional satisfaction.
Do I really have to through my Mac Pro away (it will probably be impossible to sell it to a worthy price after Apple now has discontinued supporting the development of  it´s OS ) or do I have to buy a new Mac Book Pro with Retina Display and Thunderbolt Interface of latest version in order to feel safe in continuing using Apple´s Pro applications for multimedia projects foor the future with reliable continued support from Apple (and in that case for how long I ask myself), or is there any possibility to upgrade the hardware of my Mac Pro in order to upgrade to latest OS software and still feel being a member of the sanctioned Apple club?
Alternatively, maybe Apple can help all Mac Pro owners to make it possible to upgrade to needed Apple hardware and software line of their Pro applications, and thus continue to support Apple in using and inspire developing their products and Pro market shares as well as continue to spread their good reputation in this area, in supporting these reliable customers in some way, as an example by giving a discount to all Mac Pro owners upgrading to a new computer from Apple.
Maybe this in fact is the first step from Apple in a plan to soon stop selling the model Mac Pro because the latest compact Mac Book Pro´s already has exceeded the old clumpsy Mac Pro´s in function, versatility and potential for future development. If so this Apple´s decision is logic and understandable, but please don´t abondon all customers of Mac Pro´s all over the world  who have been utterly fidele to Apple in helping the Company to spread the good reputation of Apples computers to ordinary people through the years and thus to a great extent have contributed in buildning the necessary market expectations that have made it possible for Apple to develop and sell new products to a continuing growing market by fulfilling and helping ordinary peoples daily needs. I believe that without these earlier pioneers and supporters of Apple´s ever innovative productline, its not taken for sure the Apple Company should have reached this all time incredible height of success we all can witness today...
    Sincerely
    Stefanis
PS/ Me and my family are true Apple customers and supporters in having all together 4 iPhones, 4 iPods, 1 iPad, 1 MacBook, 2 MacBook Pro´s, 1 Mac Pro, 1 Apple TV 2nd gen, 1 Apple TV 3rd gen and a lot of general and Pro Application (among them all iWork programs, Aperture, Final Cut Studio, Final Cut Pro X and Logic Pro).

what a long post....Apple, btw, does not read this stuff, so ranting, raving, and complaining here might make you feel good, but it does no good at all. That being said, I, too have a Mac Pro Quad Core Xeon with 6 gigs of ram and an nVidia 8800 GT graphics card (not as good as yours, alas) and I've had no problems at all with it. Yes, it doesn't have Thunderbolt, but maybe we Mac pro owners will get lucky and someone will come out with an adapter (probably not). No, you probably don't have to throw away your Mac Pro, but if you do, I'll take it, for a small "recycling" fee >:-) That was a joke.  Yes, the Mac Pro's future isn't quite clear, YET. Hopefully that will improve very soon. As for not being able to upgrade to Mountain Lion. Don't worry about that too much, Nobody is forcing you to do that.  Your Mac Pro won't quit working if it isn't installed. From what  I've heard, you should give the new OS a chance, and wait to get it, in case there might be some bugs, or stuff not working with the new OS, which has been known to happen. Yes, we Mac Pro owners don't like being treated like mushrooms-kept in the dark, and being fed......... but Apple is Apple and it will do what it does, and there is nothing you or me can really do to change that. All I can say is....trust, have faith, be patient, go for a walk, do something else to take your mind off of this problem. IF apple decides to drop the Mac Pro for good, and that's a big "IF", I think they will anger a whole bunch of people
which isn't good. However, that hasn't happened...YET. Let us hope that it doesn't

  • I cannot change song order on playlist with highlight and drag. I have turned off shuffle and highlighted the far left column( up/down arrow) of playlist. My mac pro is running 10.5.8  and am using itunes 10.4.

I cannot change song order on playlists (old or new) with highlight and drag. I have turned off shuffle and highlighted the far left column (up/down arrow) of playlist. My mac pro is running 10.5.8  and am using itunes 10.4. I can't drag and drop "music" to "playlist" but can right click and get the option to "add to playlist." No such option for moving song within playlist, only the up and down arrow which moves song from top to bottom list, so if it is #4 from top it will move to #4 from bottom. Stupid I know. I spent over an hour with Apple support, reinstalled itunes, restarted and rebooted computer. Networked with my laptop which is running 10.6.8 and itunes 10.4 and it can drag and drop. The final Apple support solution was to reinstall my operating system. I would prefer not to. Any other ideas?

After looking at other people's posts, I think it's official: there is a bug. Itunes support said I should not have lost the drag/drop tool and I haven't on the laptop that is running itunes 10.4 and operating system 10.6.8. I chatted with someboby who lost both his drag/drop and side scroll and what we have in common is a wacom tablet for a mouse. My laptop is a wireless mouse. I reinstalled whatever updated driver that wacom has out there, shut the system down for night, hoping for magic, but alas none to be had. So if I want to change song order, I network the laptop and desktop, share the screen on the laptop, drag and drop to my heart's content and curse Apple for making me work this hard to find the tool that was once at my fingertips. Apple also let me know that if I want to share songs in household that the hundreds on songs that were purchased for .99 need to be repurchased for another .30. Maybe Apple is holding my drag/drop tool captive til I pay up the money or Maybe the next update will fix the problem, I for one give up for now.

  • Memory Upgrade for Mac Pro 1,1

    Hello,
I have what I believe is a first generation Mac Pro. The system profiler says it's version 1,1.
When I bought it, I had an additional 2 GB of ram installed by the dealer for a total of 3GB.
Today I am trying to install a pair of 2GB DIMMS for a total of 7GB.
I bought the memory at my local mac dealer (Mac Enthusiasts in West LA). He asked what version of Mac I had and I said I thought it was first generation. He asked for the serial number, but I didn't know I needed one. I did however bring the manual and told him the date was 2006.
He assured me he had the right memory for my machine, despite my offering to get the serial number from home.
The point of all this is when I opened up my mac to install the memory, I was surprised to see that the original factory memory had HUGE BLACK HEAT SINKS on it. The second, dealer-installed memory had SLIM SILVER HEAT SINKS, and now finally the memory I bought today has NO HEAT SINKS WHATSOEVER.
Is it possible that memory technology has improved and newer DIMMS run cooler and don't need heat sinks? Or do I have the wrong memory? Is there any online guide or utility I can use to determine if I can use these modules?
Finally, here is the text on the sticker of the modules:
    2GB PC2-5300 (667Mhz) DDR2 DIMM
The chips themselves appear to say "Lynnix" KOR
    Please help.
    Thanks,
    P-FO

You indeed have the first generation Mac Pro. It can use up to 8 - 240-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 ECC fully-buffered DIMM (FB-DIMM) in (matched pairs.) The modules should have an Apple certified or similar heat sink. Do not use DIMMs without heat sinks as they will not last and may be subject to frequent errors. The DIMMs must be fully buffered (FB) and must be error correcting (ECC) and installed in matching pairs.
Whatever your local dealer sold you if there's no heat sink, they aren't FB and ECC modules, then don't use them.
For proper installation see the following:
About RAM installation in the Mac Pro
    Mac Pro memory arrangement photos
    Mac Pro Memory Configuration
    Memory Tests- "2008" Mac Pro
Ram should be installed minimally in matched pairs and optimally in matched quads. This means the memory modules are the same size and specifications. They should also be equipped with the Apple-certified style of heat sink.

  • How can I upgrade my Mac Pro

    Hello,
I have a Mac Pro. Here are the specs :
    Mac OS X 10.5.8
    MacPro1,1
    NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT
When OS 10.6 came out, I found out that I couldn't upgrade to it because of my graphic card. In the technical specifications it is mentioned that :
    OpenCL
requires one of the following graphics cards or graphics processors:
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M, GeForce 9600M GT, GeForce 8600M GT, GeForce GT 120, GeForce GT 130, GeForce GTX 285, GeForce 8800 GT, GeForce 8800 GS, Quadro FX 4800, Quadro FX5600
    ATI Radeon 4850, Radeon 4870
Now, OS 10.5.8 is becoming more and more outdated. I would like to know how can I upgrade my Mac Pro ? What kind of graphic card can I put in ?
Thank you for any help and/or information !

It's been a while since I've used it but I installed Snow Leopard on my old Mac Pro 1,1 with the 7300GT and it worked. OpenCL may not have but the rest of it did. I don't think what you've quoted says you can't upgrade but only that an upgrade won't deliver all of the features in Snow Leopard. Indeed, I was able to move the HD in the 1,1 Mac Pro into the 5,1 Mac Pro, boot from it (10.6.4 is the minimum the 2010 Mac Pro will boot with), clone it and then updated it.

  • How far is it possible to upgrade a Mac Pro mid-2010 to the maximum extract.

    Hello
How far is it possible to upgrade a Mac Pro mid-2010 to the maximum performance. I would be interested how far one could come close to the performance of the new Mac Pro 2013, or is it hopeless.
    My computer
    Mac Pro
    mid-2010
    Processor 2 x 2.4 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Memory 14 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 ECC
Graphics Card ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB
    Software OS X 10.9.1 (13B42)
Please excuse my english is not the best because.

    For what apps?
Okay, you have the slower 2.4GHz processors, most have found that MHz still rule and matter, meaning a 6-core 3.4GHz for some applications (most) was the best and the sweet spot.
So you could upgrade to a pair of 3.2GHz 4-core (cheapest) rather than splurge on two 6-core 3.34GHz (more expensive and more cores).
First thing to do, put the system on a 256GB Samsung 840 SSD.
For photoshop and graphics, invest in some more SSD ($US300 for 500GB) and put those on a PCIe SSD controller ($300 Sonnet Tempo Pro) and put Aperture/Lightroom on one, and use the 2nd SSD for scratch.
RAM: 24-32GB would probably help all but the more casusalist of user.

There is nothing to do, unless you buy a new computer.
Mac OS 10.5.8 or later is required.

Hello, Edward and thank you for your note.
I read through the thread you mentioned and it seems that people are having a lot of problems with the iCloud clients, so we're not alone, but the unique issue in my case is the failing email address vs. the working perfectly email address.
After reading your message tonight, I tried my setup again with the preferred Apple ID (the one without the "." between the names), and for the first time ever, IT WORKS. Mail app configured the servers both send and receive as p01-smtp.mail.me.com and p01-imap.mail.me.com. For the first time, I'm able to send and receive into the Mail app, create mailboxes, move messages into and out of mailboxes, keep Sent messages, etc.
I had a 50-minute support chat with MobileMe support via ExpressLane on Monday afternoon. They couldn't resolve my issue but passed me on to escalation. I was told to expect to get an email from advanced support by this afternoon, but none has arrived. However, so far tonight -- and I will check again tomorrow several times before declaring victory -- it looks like something has been fixed on the Apple end to make things work.
I will report back after I do some additional testing tomorrow to make sure the fix is real and is solid...and before I let my friend, the new Mac user, know the good news.
    Regards,
    Mike

  • Upgrade to Mac Pro

Next week I'm getting my new Mac Pro and will need to copy programs and settings from my iMAC 24" to the new MP. Should I use the transfer option when the MP first boots up or make an image of my iMAC with SuperDuper and then restore that to the MP? Thanks...
    --Rocky

The easiest way would be to connect the two via Firewire cable and use Migration Assistant to transfer from the iMac to the MP. Because both are Intel Macs and the iMac is running 10.4.9 this should not present any problems.
The first thing you should do is repair the hard drive and permissions on the iMac:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Next, you should startup the MP and update it to 10.4.9. After you setup the Mac Pro you can open Software Update to download and install any necessary updates. Obviously you will need an internet connection for this. After updating the Mac Pro you should shut it off.
Connect a Firewire cable between the two computers. If you have a FW800 cable then use the FW800 ports, otherwise use the FW400 ports. Read the following:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25773
    http://www.macdevcenter.com/pub/a/mac/2005/05/17/tiger.html
Because you are migrating to the Mac Pro you should first boot the Mac Pro into Target Disk Mode and then boot the iMac normally. To boot the Mac Pro into TDM restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the "T" key until the TDM screen appears. Then boot the iMac normally. After the iMac starts up you should see the Mac Pro's disk drive on the iMac's Desktop.
You can use Migration Assistant to make mass transfers of Applications, user accounts, etc. You can also simply transfer the contents of selected folders:
<font "size=+1">Folders You Can Move to Your new Mac
From the Home folder copy the contents of Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites.
    In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
    /Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist (* This is a very important file which contains all email account settings and general mail preferences.)
/Home/Library/Preferences/ copy any preferences needed for third-party applications
/Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
    If you want cookies:
    /Home/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist
    /Home/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist
    For Entourage users:
Entourage is in /Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data
    Also in /Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft
Credit goes to another forum user for this information.
You will find the results will be best if you use the same account shortname and password on the Mac Pro that you currently use on the iMac.

When I restart my Mac, the grey screen appears like usual. But it takes more than 40 minutes (or more) for it to load to finish restarting the Mac. What should I do to fix it?!

Disconnect all devices from your computer if you have not already done so.  Restart again.  If the problem has been resolved, you had a peripheral conflict.  You will then have to reconnect the devices one at time, restart,  to locate the culprit.
Login Items is another culprit.  Check your login items.
    System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items
Delete/disable all you do not need or want.

  • Upgraded to Mac Pro, and now none of my previous projects open

As the title says, I recently upgraded to a Mac Pro from an iMac.  I have been using CC for a lot of projects and did a transfer from a Time Machine backup, so everything LOOKS the same.  However, when I try to open any previously made projects (which were created and stored on an external drive, anyway) Premiere says that "This project contains a sequence that could not be opened.  No sequence preview preset file or codec could be associated with this sequence type."  and won't let me do anything.  I"m sure this is not a unique problem, but does anyone have a solution?  Thanks!
