Upgraded to Mavericks 10.9, running very slow all the time
I know this has been asked many times, and I've read through many threads, but I have never seen a definitive answer or anything approaching an official response from Apple.
I upgraded my Macbook Pro from 10.6.8 to 10.9 several weeks after it was released. I immediately noticed that response times for pretty much everything got really bad. I started getting the "beach balls" popping up frequently, and it became painful to use my computer. I am upgraded now to 10.9.2 and no improvement. In fact, it might be even worse. It's inconsistent - sometimes it's just a little slow, and sometimes it's so painfully bad that it's too frustrating to use my expensive laptop.
Don't tell me anything about Spotlight building an index or checking Activity Monitor. My upgrade was done months ago - the index is done. And I checked Activity Monitor, and saw nothing unusual. It claimed I had in the neighborhood of 93% available CPU and half my memory available.

Thanks, Eric - I had read many of those links before, but they mainly talk about things like memory usage, CPU usage or hard disk problems. My CPU and memory usage aren't an issue, and this problem only began after the upgrade to Mavericks, so I doubt that disk problems are the cause.

0 B Page-outs1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to gather information about the state of your computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it on this page. However, you should be cautious about running a program at the instance of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them.
Here's a summary of what you need to do: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait about a minute. Then paste some other text, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in your browser, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign ($) or a percent sign (%). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for your password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator rights.
The test may take up to a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. There is no indication of progress until it's done. Wait for the line "[Process completed]" to appear in the Terminal window. If you don't see that line within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report your results. No harm will be done.
When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." That's because the forum software falsely identifies something in the post as a violation of the terms of use. If that happens, please post the results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

My Mac book Pro is running very slow and the rainbow ball is appearing all the time. Any suggestions for clean up?? I have the OS X Lion system.

- do you need more RAM? (run Activity Monitor and see how much free RAM - green - is available)
- do you Restart fairly regularly, e.g. at least once a week, to clear out any swap or temporary files?
- do you need to do maintenance, e.g. clearing out caches and unused logs, etc? -
HP xw8600 workstation fans run at max all the time after upgrading CPUs and memory
Hello, This is my 1st post on the forums here so I would like to thank everyone for the help ahead of time. I have an HP xw8600 workstation on which I have upgraded the CPUs and RAM recently - after the upgrade the fans seem to spin at full speed all the time (not just under load). Before the upgrading the fans were barely heard but afterwords the workstation has become very loud. This seems odd that the fans always run fast now and seems like this is not "normal" - what needs to be done to allow the fans to again be modulated by load/temp settings as designed? I looked in the temp and fan RPM settings in the BIOS and it looks like all sensors are working (including ambient temp sensor - was stating around 20 deg. C). Hardware changes:Before - CPU: 2x Intel Xeon X5460/ 3.16 GHz, 12MB L2, 1333 MHz, FSB,120WRAM: HP 32GB (16x2GB) DDR2-667 ECC FBD RAM - using RAM riser After -CPU: 2x Intel Xeon X5492/ 3.40 GHz, 12MB L2, 1600 MHz, FSB,150WRAM: HP 32GB (8x4GB) DDR2-800 ECC FBD RAM - using RAM riser NOTE: From the HP spec sheet it says that 32GB(8x4GB) is not supported by 5492... Acoustics waiver required. Other than the constantly loud fans the workstation works perfectly with the new setup. Please let me know if anyone has run into this issue with the fast fans and whether there is a fix for this (maybe flashing BIOS?). Any advice is greatly appreciated! [I originally posted this under Desktops section - http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Hardware/HP-xw8600-workstation-fans-run-at-max-all-the-time-after/td-p/3929746]The xw8600 has a motherboard firmware setting that if it detects high powered processors in place it wants to see the "double tall" performance heatsink/double fans per heatsink in place. I have posted about that and how I rewired a double tall to use side by side in my xw8400 next to a single tall heatsink/fan to see how cooling was affected in that workstation. The xw8400 did not ever come with double tall performance heatsinks, to my knowledge, so its motherboard's firmware is different. In those posts I also explained how to do a simple jumper wire modification on a single tall heatsink to spoof the xw8600 into thinking it had a double tall/two fans in place over each processor. Simple and quick. So, you might want to get a couple of double talls off eBay, or try the jumper wire trick. I'd personally advise to get the double tall heatsinks given that you're running 150W max TDP processors. If I remember correctly HP wanted you to use the double talls for 120W max TDP and above. I'd feel comfortable using that trick on a set of 120 watt processors if I was not hammering them frequently, but it sounds like you're a high level power user. The all-fans-on-high can be due to a failed thermisitor in the front power cable reading ambient air temps too high, but you can check that in BIOS to see the temp and it sounds like yours is not elevated incorrectly. You can search for my experience with that in a xw6600, and it is an easy $8.00-$12.00 fix with a new cable off eBay. You'd want the longer version for the xw8600, versus the shorter one for the xw6600. Finally, maybe you've just gone too high in your total wattage use? Those risers can run hot and draw lots of power. Could you live with less ram and get rid of the risers using 4GB sticks? Sometimes those prior prohibitions regarding what is and is not supported go away with later BIOS updates. Is your BIOS the latest? My macbook pro started running very slow in the past few days
Don't know if freezes or run very slow, it always happen when i open the mac (i always leave it on sleep mode) it doesn't respond to anything and the cursor turns into the rainbow loading icon.
It takes like ten to twenty minutes to respond if i've clicked on safari or any aplication to open.
The solution i found to that was keep pressing the power button til the mac turn off , restarting seemed to solve the problem but now it took like 30 minutes to restart, when always was like 5 minutes.
What can i do?If you get your machine running, you should immediatly copy off any personal data to a Storage Drive (no TimeMachine!) because your boot drive is failing.

Why Mail on Mavericks keeps Writing changes to disc all the time?
I have updated my MacBook Pro (early 2011) to Mavericks and now my IMAP Gmail account on Mail is having a huge endless "Writing changes to disc" on +/- sometimes with up to 50.000 messages, almost freezing my computer all the time! My Inbox, only has aprox 50 messages, I always move mesages to other folders!
Everything just worked fine on Mountain Lion and now my Mac is very slow because of this. Only if I close Mail than I have my Mac back... but I need to work with Mail open, so thats not an option.I have the same problem. Since installing Mavericks I have a major issue with Apple Mail drastically slowing my whole system down. As others have mentioned, basically Mail takes over the computer and I find myself looking at spinning beach balls for minutes at a time.
From watching the Mail "Activity Window" (accessible from the "Window" menu item), I have discovered that several times a day it starts "Writing changes to disk" (see screenshot) for no apparent reason (it's not as if I have shifted any mailboxes); and that's the time when everything comes to a shuddering halt. It takes a long time, about half an hour or so, to rewrite 27,000 messages (or some other ginormous number, it varies) to disk, and during that time I'm held up. This problem never arose with Mountain Lion.
Basically it seems to me that Mail has been messed up in Mavericks, and Apple needs to fix it.
It was suggested to me by the Apple "Support Advisor" that the fault may lie with Gmail, due to some changes Google have made. But that sounds like it's a cop-out and anyway it's no excuse. Here are two of the biggest companies in the world who are constantly talking with each other about many things. If it's true (unlikely) Apple should be able to communicate with Gmail and get it sorted. -
Macbook Pro running very slow all of a sudden
Hello, my mac has suddenly started running extremely slow. It sits on the grey screen on start up for about 10 mins and i get the spinning wheel constantly when using through the day. it is also running extremely hot when in use and the fans are almost always on full power. ive cleaned some room on it and checked the fans for lint and dust. programs sometimes just shut down also. i read in other posts to run a etresoft report as that can help identify problems so here are my results. any help would be excellent thanks.

Applications loading and running in background all the time
Lately my Macbook Pro seems to be running apps in the background and installing. It makes the working noises the Macbook makes when the processors are working. Quite often when I shut it down it asks me if I want to abort installation. I keep having to manually remove 'com.wondershare.mobilegodaemon' from the Console, but it comes right back when I reboot. Mobile go is the phone android app to connect your phone to the laptop. I also recently purchased Adobe software on the cloud.
Is there anyway to prevent apps from updating or working in the background while I work? It is annoying when I am working on a project, the laptop begins to howl and will not stop.
Can I remove all the files from the Launch Daemon and Launch Folders in the Library folder?
Do I have some kind of virus or infection?

As for where the remaining files that didn't get removed are located, I have no idea. The fact that you are able to temporarily disable it with launchctl says at least one of them will be in one of the LaunchAgents or LaunchDaemons folders on your computer, either in the root-level Library folder or the invisible one in your user folder (hold down option and choose Library from the Go menu in the Finder to open that one). However, for all I know there may be other files related to Wondershare located elsewhere as well.
Rather than randomly hunting around for these files, I'd recommend looking for the official Wondershare uninstaller and trying that. You may need to reinstall it in order to remove it at this point, since you only have a partial install left.
I have run Adwaremedic and I have run Mackeeper to no avail.
AdwareMedic will not remove Wondershare, because that's not adware. AdwareMedic only removes adware.

Slow BB in Evenings, now slow all the time.
Hi All
Having an issue with the speed of my BB. The story so far...
Had the line installed end of October, and once activated was getting between 6 and 7 MBPS without issue. Happy days.
7 days ago, I fitted an extention to the line in the house so I could plug in the Sky box. All still working great.
2 days after having the sly box plugged in, at 6PM or so in the evening the connection dropped to between 0.2 and 0.6 MBPS. This would last all evening. Next morning and during the day, back up to 6 to 7 MBPS.
Phoned BT and they tested the line etc, and escallated it to the engineer bods. Got a call the next day to say that something had been cleared on the line and all should be well now. But it was not, it was exactly the same.
So, phoned them again, and this time the chap on the phone said that the issue was the sky box that was plugged in.. This made sense in a way, as only started having the issue since I plugged the box in. So, unplugged the box. And just to be sure, plugged the router into the test socket to eliminate any issues I may have caused with my extention wiring etc.
That was yesterday, and today I have had slow connection all day....
What could be the issue? Has my IP profile dropped for some reason and it will take a few days to come back up?
How does one plug in a Sky box, as you are supposed to, without it killing your BB in the evenings?
Details are as follows.
Master socket with the horizontal line. Hub plugged into the test socket yesterday evening though the microfilter.
Home Hub is the 3 b type
Did the Quite line test 20 minutes ago - and all was Quiet.

Imac g5 fan seems to run on high all the time now

To remove an application entirely, I use AppZapper, and generally do a follow up in Spotlight, although I have found that is has usually removed any trace of the deleted app.

Mozilla seems to have done a recent "upgrade" and it has slowed my computer down, created viruses and I continue to get pop ups that last a mile long. I am not sure what has been done, but, I am ready to leave Mozilla.
Do a malware check with some malware scan programs. You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of the database before doing a scan.

Macbook Running Very Slow All of a Sudden
In the last couple of days, my macbook has started loading things very slowly. This is not an issue with the internet, but opening applications and sometimes it seems as if the computer can't even keep up with my typing. I have searched older posts on this topic thoroughly and I haven't been able to solve the problem yet. I have run Leopard Cache Cleaner and Onyx to no avail. My activity monitor says that something called Agent Daemon is taking up 9.10% of my CPU. What is that? Help Please!

Checked free disk space lately? Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop, then click: Get Info. In the Get Info window, click the discovery triangle so it's facing down. You will see; Capacity and Available Make sure you have 10% available disk space, 15% is better. Not enough available drive space can cause issues like you are experiencing.
Boot from your install disk and run Disk Utility.
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
