Lightroom 4 - Far too slow!!
I have just spent 4 hours using Lightroom 4 to adjust 600 images for one of my clients. If I had used Lightroom 3 it would have taken half the time. Sorry to say that in it's present form the software is far too slow to be considered for professional use. I hope that Adobe fix this before the software is officially launched.
Agreed... LR4b is not as speedy as LR3. In my own use, thus far, I haven't noticed too many enormous speed deficiencies... but I concur that it is slower overall.
My only point was that, given the assumption that the final release of LR4 will be refined to be mostly comparable in speed to LR3, there's no other wildcards that would affect LR's performance as high-volume post-processing software. Thus, there's no reason to fear that LR4 would be any less equipped for high-volume work than LR3. The workflow is still essentially the same... the only variable is the software's processing performance. If you "personally think that Adobe will fix the speed issue", then there's nothing to be worried about and no necessity to put the beta version through the paces with high-volume processing.
The whole point of the beta is to allow us to sample the new enhancements and provide feedback, not to put what is arguably "prototype" software into a rigorous production scenario. It's not refined for that scale of use yet. If the fundamental workflow of LR4 represented a massive diversion from that of LR3, it would be a different story... but the two versions are fundamentally the same and there's no reason that our workflow would take significantly longer with the final release of LR4.
As far as wanting a "well sorted base software" and foregoing geo-tagging video and what not, I'm not really sure what you mean. Forego geo-tagging for what? I don't get it. But if your only hang-up with LR4b is the performance of the beta version (which is certain to improve by the final release), then it would seem that you like LR4, right? -

XML Parsing far too slow. (How can I speed it up)
Hey everyone,
I am converting a site from ASP to JSP and there are a bunch of pages that parse an XML document display certain information from it. One problem is that the JSP implementation I have is far too slow. It takes ~6 seconds to load the page as we wait for it to process. I am using <x:parse> and <x:forEach> to process it using an XPath statement with the appropriate predicate ($dom/foo/bar/Route[ID > 999] for example)
One problems I think is the size of the XML document. All the data for different pages is pushed to the same XML file and we use maybe 5-10% of the data in any one parse. I have looked at XML filters a little bit but can't seem to find a good example or a clear explanation as to whether or not this will even solve my problem.
The root node has 5 children and the biggest one which takes up probably 3/4 of the document isn't even used by us.
My boss wants it to be as fast as the ASP implementation which was really fast. It is 100% custom and manually probes the XML document and can skip any children which it knows won't contain any leaf's we want (mainly that big one) and is nearly instant.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks,
JohnHey guys, thanks for the responses and sorry it took so long to get back - I have been busy with school an all.
Well, first off let me say that everything in general seems far slower than what I would expect. I have eliminated different parts and everything I do eliminate seems to make is significantly faster. Does JSP seems relatively slow to you guys? I am serving it from a slower machine too but it just seems quite a bit slower than I would have expected and I don't feel I'll ever be able to match the speed of the ASP implementation.
However, I think there is light at the end of the tunnel. I believe I found the slowest part. Surprisingly, it is not the importing or even the parsing of the file. They seem like they could take at the very most 1/2 second and the whole file takes ~5 seconds to run. The part that is causing the most delay is the five x:set tags.
<x:set var="attrID" select="string($r/ID)"/>is one of them. If I replace them with a piece of servlet code to assign dummy values instead, it cuts the execution by 80-90%.
Any ideas why these may be so slow?
Also, do you think switching to a servlet implementation would be better? I actually use some servlet code that I mean to convert over to tags once I get it working. Shouldn't the tags be about the same speed and are considered the "better" way to do things if possible?
Thanks again,
John -
Can I uninstall Maverick. Too slow
I have a new iMac which had Mountain Lion installed. Since updating to Maverick, its so slow. Can I uninstall Maverick back to Mountain Lion, and how please would I do this - step by step - appreciate your help.
You need a full TimeMachine backup:
See: OS X Mavericks: Revert to a previous OS X version
But it would probably better to find out what is causing the slowness.
Only, you would need to tell us more about your installition and what is not working properly. -
After I upgraded from Mountian Lion to Maverick (OS10.9) accessing files and directories on external drives slowed down by at least 10 - 15 %. I get the color wheel and a long wait almost 25% of the time. Is there a solution other than downgrading to 10>8?
Fixing a Mavericks Installation Problem
How to manage a failed OS X Mavericks installation | MacFixIt - CNET Reviews.
Try these in order:
1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and
after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.
Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless. -
Mavericks is too slow, I've checked other posts, please help.
I am trying to finish editing a movie in FCPX this weekend for a film festival that has asked for it.
But everything is Pentium 90 slow. I don't care about all the other apps that have hiccups and pause to think when they were quite happy, I'll live with those (I'm sure Apple will eventually fix it, even Microsoft eventually released Windows 8.1).
But I am handcuffed by how debilitatingly slow fcpx has become. Plenty of free disk space, App Nap turned off for fcpx and compressor. These are not rendering delays (all files transcoded).
Please do not give me a lot of homework to do. The only change (says the retired CTO who's heard that from users for 20 years) was Mavericks.
Either somebody has a theory about how to help me or they don't.
If you don't, I can't fault you, I don't know either.
If you do, I would love to hear from you. This documentary is about a man dying from cancer and we'd like him to see it at his home town film festival before he passes (seriously).
Thanks, y'all.

Simple fix, reminds me of Windows for Workgroups.
My humble I-don't-have-time-or-energy-to-investigate-it guess is that it may be related to a faulty garbage collection. Why do I say that? See above. -
Lightroom CC is far too slow. What to do other than go back to LR 5
I've read quite a bit on the net and in these forums. Having un-ticked the CPU acceleration, I still think LR CC is slow and gluggy. Anyone have any suggestions to speed it up?
I will go back to LR5 until it's better

I see no point in keeping any backup older than a month.
If my "working" catalog went bust in Jan 2013, would I want to open a backup of - say - May 2012? What would that help me?
BTW: The catalog backups done via Lr are not incremental, each backup contains the full catalog, not only recent changes.
Reminder: you don't have to fall back to the older catalog for *all* things/photos. You can judiciously import from older catalog if need be.
Put another way: backups are full, but restoral can be "selective".
Also, don't forget the role of xmp for augmenting a catalog backup - one can get some stuff from an old backup, then overlay recent xmp to restore recent edits. Not only that, but it's also possible to selectively restore some things from xmp, whilst leaving other things - granted it takes a text editor (if sidecar) or exiftool (if embedded) and some know-how.
No question: you burn less bridges by keeping old catalog backups too, regardless of who you are or what you like. How important that is to you (or whether it's important at all) is a personal thing.

Hi there,
I'm finding that Numbers is really (really!) bogging down because I have a large number of smaller tables (approx. 20) that I'm trying to link to a main spreadsheet. I've read online that Numbers will slow down because it recalculates all of the data every time you change a cell value. I really need to be able to use the system I've spent tons of time setting up, and the last step is to extract info from the individual data tables and have it display in the main spreadsheet. Can anybody help me figure out how to make this work?! Right now, there's no way I can complete the linking, as there's at least a 3-5 second lag/pause every time I try to enter a new cell value (and often, it's much longer!).
Thanks so much!Barry wrote:
One very efficient brake of numbers is the use of multiple footer rows. You may be able to obtain a noticeable speed-up with a redesign of your document to eliminate as many footer rows as possible.
Given my experience, the most efficient brakes are column headers, the infamous columns A, B, C, D and E when they are defined as headers.
An efficient way to fasten a document is to move tables doing only calculations in a sheet different than the one in which we insert datas.
Using this tip with scripts, when it may apply, often divide the task duration by ten (yes, by ten).

Lenovo g505s wifi far too slow
I was wondering if i could get some help as i'm going out of my mind with this laptop. Ever since i bought it (over a year ago) i have been struggling with wifi. The inbuilt wifi is about as useful as a wet paper bag, it will disconnect periodically and barely get above 1mb download (i have a 100mb package). I figured i would try it with a USB dongle, but even with that i barely get above 4mb, i can load sites faster on my phone than i can on my laptop. Normally I would take it back and never touch a lenovo again, unfortunatley my waranty period has expired after being unable to use the laptop for nearly a year due to family troubles. With the release of Windows 10 and updates to the wifi I thought i'd give it another chance. Installed Win10 and all new drivers, and once again 1mb with laptop wifi, 4mb with usb dongle. So can anyone please help me with this god awful wifi before i tear my hear out and throw the laptop in the bin? Thanks. Frustrated Robeus.
No one? I'd sell the laptop but dont know who'd buy it with such a terrible internet. Would really like some help, dont want to have wasted £300.

I'm running the latest OS 10.9.1 Mavericks (late 2009 iMac). 8 gigs of RAM. 150 gigs free space on computer. Since upgrading to Mavericks, apps are slow to open, with frequent "spinning ball" interruptions. Repaired Disk Permissions - no help. Repaired disk - no problems indicated. Did notice in going to Utilities/Console that there are 4000 messages over a 3 day period. Any suggesstions how to correct this sudden slow down, other than psychiatric help?
Yes. Many messages show up when I try to use Office for Mac 08. Here's a sample (and one that repeats over and over again):
2/11/14 1:01:16.577 PM Microsoft Word[1912]: OTAtomicAdd32 is deprecated and will be removed soon. Please stop using it.
Also getting many msgs when I use Chrome. -
Oi vay! a mac thats too slow to use DVDs, quicktime, imovi,
OI VAY!!I believe I was sold a mac, by a mac expert nonetheless, that is far too slow and lacking in memory to watch videos in any form, dvd, file, with quicktime, etc.
And it seems too old for the updates available.
its a iBook G4
version 10.4.11
processor: 800 mhz (slow!)
memory: 640 mhz (low!)
Can anyone pls confirm or tell me otherwise please!?
thank u all or any replies most appreciated!
m in berlinThe computer should be able to play DVDs, if it has the correct Combo optical drive,
(and not a CD-RW basic drive) and the RAM can be increased to 1.12GB by adding
a chip under the keyboard in the upgrade slot there.
All in that series should have been able to play DVD media and record/play CD media.
You can find more specifications about portable Mac and others by getting the
Mactracker download from http://mactracker.ca and note the iBook (G4) info.
According to this ^ database (free download) the RAM max is over 1024MB.
Early iBook G4 tech specs: http://support.apple.com/kb/SP89
The software updates for Tiger 10.4.11 should appear when you run Software Update
from the menu which appears when you click on the Blue Apple in left side menubar.
You could also get the items which appear in there, direct as stand-alone installers
from Apple Support downloads online (good for later re-installs, if necessary, if saved.)
Not sure what the problem really is, in regard to the computer. There is a DVD Player
which should launch automatically on insertion of DVD media; in System Preferences
you can choose how media discs are handled in the appropriate Preference panel.
Note, you may have to buy an iLife version suitable for the computer you have, and
due to technical differences in the older 800MHz iBook G4 vs some latest models,
the iLife 09 may have specifications unsupported in the hardware of that computer.
iLife 06 is better suited for older G4 Macs, and that is a retail installer disc. You may
be able to get one in the second-hand market. Tiger 10.4 retail disc itself does not
contain an iLife version, as that was a separate disc. Computers that shipped with
Tiger 10.4.x included extra software and they had an iLife version, plus AppleWorks.
You can see a DVD without iLife installed, DVD Player should be in Applications folder.
iLife '09 Support: http://www.apple.com/support/ilife/
So, perhaps the alleged expert may have omitted something or the other in discussion
of the computer; ideally, the best iBook G4 would be the last edition 1.33/1.42GHz 12/14".
Hopefully this helps a bit.
Good luck & happy computing!

Hello, I am wondering if anyone might be able to help me.
I am developing a J3D world where if u drive into an object using a game pad then a piece of video is played which takes up the whole window and then when it finishes playing the j3D world becomes visbible again.
My problem is that when you drive into the object and the video is started it plays the .mov files far too slow - i reckon about 1/6th speed with no audio at all.
I have turned off polling for the JInput side of the game pad behaviour but still the viedo is played at the wrogn speed.
Has anyone had similar problems of have any ideas which might be able to help me?
cheers

Thank you all very much for your very valuable input!
I indeed found that I did not have libvdpau installed. I now installed the lib and built mplayer-vdpau-svn package. It works like a charm and plays all the videos now, at less than 10% CPU consumption! Without vdpau for decoding, my CPU is still not fast enough.
So I assume that libvdpau enables to play more formats compared to stock NVIDIA driver (before, I could play some movies like Elephant's Dream, but most only gave error messages). I'm very happy now and proud again of my shiny Thinkpad
I did the exact same thing yesterday, and finally found out that I had been lacking ``-vo vdpau'' for quite a while. Cheers. -
My MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012) is too slow after installing Yosemite version 10.10.1. All programs take for ever to load especially Safari and even chrome. I regret upgrading to yosemite, it was all fine with Maverick. Any suggestions ? ThankYou
1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

Late 2007 15" MBP Very slow after upgrading to Mavericks
Hi guys,
this is my first post here. I look forward to learn and help others.
The reason of this post is, as outlined in the title, slow paerformance of my computer after upgrading to Mavericks. It was kinda slow from before but this time it's almost unbearable to use it. I used to be able to run VMWare with 2 XP and 1 windows server machines WITH JUST 2 GB OF RAM! Now I have 4 GB and can barely run a single virtual machine with XP and the cooling fans come on just by watching a video on youtube, which also makes performance take a dump.

I understand it says my RAM is way too low, but hve no idea what's killing it. So far I've disabled and uninstalled all DynDNS items. I just read about Chrome's slow performance for MBP's and plan to switch back to Safari (Firefox made my computer even slower).
Thanks in advance for any light shed on this.
Oscar.Thank you Kappy, while I was reviewing the log from EtreCheck I noticed the 3rd party preference panes, launchers and daemos. I deleted a few of them and it really helped with system performance. Reading your reply confirms that what I did was the right thing; here is an updated log from EtreCheck:

I was reading about GeekBench in the discusions and decided to give it a go, although I was able to only perform the 32-bit tests, I got 1268 on the single-core score and 2187 for the multi-core score; I don't know how good or bad those numbers are. Wish I had a before and after reading but I read about it too late, when I had already erased several items.
I will appreciate any further input BEFORE I decide to reinstall the OS from scratch.
Oscar.
