Upgraded to OSX 10.6.3 & Most Applications Are Crashing!

I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard 10.6.3
On the previous version of OS X I was running the following:
- Pro-Tools LE 7.0
- Ableton Live 8.0
- Reason 3.0 with ReWire
- VSL Vienna Instruments
- Rob Papen: Predator
Along with a series of other music/sound libraries and related Plug-ins. After the installation I found that the folders are intact, but Snow Leopard is failing to find the links to the original sources. I also keep getting an error message that the program/application "quit unexpectedly". How do I get these programs to stop crashing and how do I salvage the contents of the previous OS X, not to mention the countless hours spent on editing/production? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Restore your backup.
If you didn't make a backup, make sure you learn this for the future, never upgrade your system without making a backup. Murphy's law affects everyone.
Now you may be able to piecemeal restore your system with techniques outlined here:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1308817&tstart=0
Check all your installed applications compatibility with Snow Leopard before upgrading:
http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/
http://www.macintouch.com/specialreports/snowleopard/slcompat.html
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3669
Only upgrade when you need to, and only after making sure these tips are followed*:
http://www.macmaps.com/upgradefaq.html
If you need compatibility with a specific operating system, a partition scheme to keep two operating systems installed is possible, but you'll have to wipe the hard drive first:

Good luck!

  • Most applications are crashing after startup!

Using 10.5.7 on a Mac Mini purchased last December (so not current generation, last generation).
Suddenly last night, most applications are crashing right after they go through their startup process.
    -Cocktail
-Firefox (reinstalled latest version last night)
    -iChat
-Safari is working but has crashed after being used for a little while.
-Disk Utility is working (and I've checked disc permissions and repaired them)
-Time Machine stalls on "preparing backup" but does not crash.
I tried deleting preferences for Firefox and iChat - didn't help. Reinstalled Firefox. Didn't help.
Tried the 10.5.7 combo update. Didn't help.
Haven't tried anything else cause I'm getting tired of all the crashing!

Try the steps outlined in the following post. Although it was written for Mac OS X 10.4, it's still valid for 10.5...

CS5.5 and OSX 10.9.4: Most applications will not launch even after uninstalling and reinstalling the Creative Suite 5.5. After my 2011 MacBook Pro 17 died, I had to purchase a new MacBook Pro 15 to replace it.  I performed a Time Machine installation from that 2011 machine, and only Distiller and Acrobat would launch (none of the rest of the creation apps).  So I ran the CS5.5 installer, uninstalled, then reinstalled, producing the same result. When I try to launch, nothing happens.  What next?

i recently upgraded to Lion and i find that my computer is running slow and applications are crashing.  For example I have Word 2011 for Mac and it crashes all the time I end up losing my work.  It often happens when I'm in class using notebook and when I press record my computer starts thinking and it freezes.
Also, I feel that it overheats often and my battery runs out pretty quickly.  I had the macbook (black) and this never happened before.  I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong or if there is something with my computer.I bought my computer summer 2010, I don't think this should be happening. Please Help......

This is exactly what keeps happening to mine too.  I was at a conference taking notes, and I was
using the Notebook template, and doing some audio recording simultaneously.  About 3 hours into the conference (not consistently recording, but on and off with the sessions) my file wouldn't save anymore, saying something like "File cannot be modified while in use with another program" and "Invalid file name" when I would go back into my folder to look for it). I tried installing some updates from Microsoft, and when I restarted, I was at least able to open my old notes again, and so far it looks like the audio was working.  However, today at the conference, the same thing happened again, but I wasn't actively recording any audio (though after I had copy and pasted my second file of notes into the original, I went back to using it after re-naming it).
Does the crash happen to you under similar cirucumstances?  The update might help a little, but it is definitely not the solution.  Does anyone have any solutions?  Lion shouldn't be this buggy... I moved to Mac to get away from the garbage of bugs and compatibility issues...

    Help...please?

How old is this machine? If it's less than 90 days old you have 90 days of Free AppleCare coverage, call them! You will find the phone number in your manual. If it's out of AppleCare or you bought it used take it your local Apple Store or AASP to have it looked at. We don't have enough information to know what the problem might be. You can run some tests such as Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode 2-3x to see if it has any hardware errors. Beyond that it's really tough to say.

  • Many applications are crashing since I upgraded my iphone 4s to iOS 8.0.2

Unfortunately my iphone 4s has became unreliable and unstable since I upgraded to iOS 8.0.2. I cannot even go back to earlier iOS 7.1.2.
Phone is now very slow and many applications are crashing. Battery is draining like anything.
I tried options from internet to save battery, but whats the point of having iphone if I have to turn off the features to save battery.
Some of the applications which started crashing since I upgrade also does not exists anymore on store to get the their support.
Apple - when will these issues gets fixed ? or am I suppose to trash this beautiful piece of hardware just because of firmware issues?
Can you not at least allow people to go back to earlier stable iOS till you fix them?

Sounds like a corrupted file in system software. Boot into Recovery Mode and run Disk Utility. Most likely it will find a problem and be able to correct it. Read about Recovery mode here:
OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support
You may need to reinstall OS X as part of this. I hope you have a Time Machine backup?

  • Upgraded to OSX Mountain Lion. "Contacts" groups are a mess.

I upgraded from OSX 10.6.8 to OSX 10.8.4.
I did not think to back Contacts up and and my group email lists in Contacts are, for all intents and purposes, lost. I now have all kinds of information from other card files in the email lists and no way to sort it all out.
Am I screwed? Why would ML do this?
I still have all the original customer emails from which I created these group email lists but I would prefer to not have to cut and paste all of them into a new group as there are hundreds of them. Is there a way to export the addresses in these emails, en masse, into a group list?

since upgrading to ios5 on my iphone4 does not play music (ipod) from my playlists allthough songs are installed, and some of the applications are crashing

Okay, mine now works here is what I did.
plug in the iPhone, iPad etc
in iTunes select the phone or iPad
Under Summary uncheck "Sync with this....."
Under "Music" uncheck the "Sync Music"
Let it remove all the songs, dont worry it will come back no problems.
Once that is all done all the music on the phone or ipad should be gone.
Now check them both back on and everything should copy back onto it.
    Working now !!!!!

  • Most applications are not working after software update-HELP!!!

HI,i have a 4 years old macbook which i upgrade couple of month ago with snow leopard to use it with my iphone...everything was fine, all applications were working until i did the software update today!!!now almost NOTHING works,no skype,no itunes,no msn..etc..when i try to open an application,it shuts down!!!ANY IDEAS???

The normal best practice for any update:
    backup
    repair your system
insure you have a working bootable backup clone
restart once in safe boot mode
    and only then apply updates
repair permissions (but ONLY from current system version, not from earlier version, so skip using original OS X Snow Leopard DVD even)
Also check the "Using Snow Leopard" forum. There are always a few/some who seem to have problem, but unless you have something that 'broke' and does not work with this update, it was an underlying issue, "waiting to happen" so to speak.

Hi, can someone please help me with this one, I have recently downloaded QuickTime 7.2 updates and now I can open most of my applications including safari. I have done the trouble shooting on the apple support page with downloading the 10.4.10 Combo update with no luck of it working. Have you made your user Library-folder visible in Finder?
I did that in the Terminal and shortly after that the crashes started for me.
I just updated to 10.8.2 and that made the user Library-folder invisible again.
At the same time Bridge started behaving properly.
Not saying that's anything other than a coincidence.

  • A lot of my applications are crashing

What I love most about the intel mac and leopard is the stability. It used to be that I would go months without a program crashing. Lately, I'm having many applications crash that never used to. Mail, Safari, pretty much everything but itunes. Sometimes when I go to quit an application like Illustrator, it gives me the crash dialog box (from Adobe maybe) to ask if I want to send an error report - when all I did was go to quit the application. It seemed to quit fine to me, but I'll still get the error report.
Is Snow Leopard worth upgrading to? I just don't know if it's stable with all my apps.
    Thanks,
    Bob

    Re cache cleaning etc.
The other thing I'd try is running Applejack which is a very useful little program for troubleshooting and repairing. It runs from Single User Mode. Hold CMD-S at the startup chime. Here's a short article explaining how it's used. (Also, be sure to read the Read Me.) It's very easy to use. You just follow the on screen prompts. First, just type in applejack and press return. To begin with, I'd only run it only for steps 3 and 4, which will do a relatively light cache cleaning and check for corrupted Preference files. Doing it this way, you'll also be able to run those steps for your user, not just the system. If that doesn't help, you can run it for deeper cache cleaning by typing in applejack AUTO and let it run through a full sequence of tasks. Note: that if you do a deeper cache cleaning, you can expect the system to run a bit slower until those caches are rebuilt.

  • Updated Safari, now most apps are crashing at start-up

So I updated Safari on Friday, and I was unable to get it to run. It would always crash on start up, Since then I have 1 by 1 losing my other Apps. iWeb,Software Update, both crash on start-up, and in my System Prefernces my .mac and Network prefernces crash as well.
I have never been able to repair permissions since I upgraded to Leopard. I have however repaired permissions while booting up on a connecting firewire drive with 10.3, but it did not help. I have chucked all my preferences for the offending apps as well....what is next?
    Cheers
    -Allan

It sounds as if there are some repairs needed. If the Repair Permissions function has never worked, then something is awry and needs repair. When you install other applications on top, you could be adding to the instability and it sounds as if Safari has tipped the balance: now they are all going haywire.
I would consider first running the Repair Disk utility from the grey install disk; secondly applying (or even reapplying) the OS X 10.5.2 Combo update -- a heavy download I know, but it may be worthwhile; and running a stronger utility, like Disk Warrior (always a good standby).
