Upgraded to Snow Leopard, font problems in Safari

When I open a few webpages, and the normal Times font displays like a distressed version, with extra splotches above certain letters, the "L" is elongated, "V" "S" & "N" all have accents over the lower-case letters. I check the preferences in Safari, and the default settings are in place -- default encoding Western ISO Latin 1.
I checked the same web pages on my other Mac that I upgraded at the same time (same disks, a Mac Family pack), and they display correctly.
Obviously some setting on my first Mac is different. Any suggestions about where to look first?
Thanks,

Could just be corrupt font cache files.
Close all running applications. From an administrator account, open the Terminal app and enter the following command. You can also copy/paste it from here into the Terminal window:
sudo atsutil databases -remove
This removes all font cache files. Both for the system and all user font cache files. After running the command, close Terminal and immediately restart your Mac.

  • Font Problem after Upgrade to Snow Leopard?

Has anyone else noticed this? I open a Keynote I had just done before upgrading to Snow Leopard, and the Bullets and font are all jumbled together, and don't play when I try to play the slideshow?

I noticed the same jumbled text problem.
When I went to look at Font Book, I see that those fonts are no longer installed. It must've happened when I loaded Snow Leopard last weekend.
Anyway, I went to reinstall fonts, and I see I've got a bunch that got uninstalled. But when I try to reinstall them, like Calisto and Caligula to name the first couple I tried, Font Book reports that there were serious errors when trying to load them.
Does anyone have insights into the vague message: "System Validation" as the serious problem? I don't see a way to get more details about the problem than that.

  • Recently safari has been quit unexpectedly I've upgraded to snow leopard and I have the latest safari software. What can I do about it to rectify the problem?

Recently Safari has been quitting unexpectedly. I've dumped my cache several times and even upgraded to snow leopard.l I have the latest version of Safari 5.0.5. The situation has gotten quite annoying and been going on for about three weeks now. What can I do to fix this short of bringing it to someone?
I restart and it works fine for  awhile and then it quits again. I either restart and/or dump the cache AGAIN! This is getting quite tedious. I've even taken the battery out and reinstalled it. Nothing seems to stop the quitting.

  • Preview Pane in Safari after upgrading to Snow Leopard

Safari 4.0.3 no longer shows attachments previews. This is only since upgrading to Snow Leopard. So, for example, if I am trying to attach a jpg, unless I know the specific name I can't preview it to make sure it is the correct one. The pane will not open. I am not sure what to do about this! Very frustrating. I just switched from Firefox bc it was too slow and it was crashing constantly. Is Apple going to fix the preview pane bug, or is it something I am doing wrong?

We found a workaround that dealt with the issue quite well with our workflow. Downgrading our systems from OS X 10.6.7 to 10.6.6 was not a realistic option. Your milage may vary if you have hundreds or thousands of OpenType fonts or troublesome Type 1 Postcript fonts or a very large number of OS X 10.6.7 workstations to manage.
We found that if we converted the OpenType fonts to TrueType fonts, then the problem went away. This may also work if you convert Type 1 Postscript fonts to TrueType. I posted some suggestions for how to do that in the "main" thread on the problem here http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=13323072

  • Upgraded to snow leopard, now safari scrolls a page down when space bar is hit and sometimes crashes.  Any ideas for a fix?

I just upgraded to the new snow leopard, now my Safari is acting loopy.  At times, the page will scroll down when I hit the space bar.  As I type this discussion the screen isn't paging down, but if I go to the tab where I have facebook loaded and hit the space bar, it acts as a page down key.  I've had safari crash about 5 times tonight for no apparent reason.  The delete key sometimes will act as a page back key.  I really have no idea whats going on.
I've had keyboards go wacko on me before due to something being spilled on them or a wireless problem, but this keyboard is a wired keyboard and nothing was spilled on it.  It's rather new and I'm quite certain it's not a keyboard issue.
No settings have been changed on the computer.  The only thing different today from yesterday, is the fact that I upgraded to snow leopard.
    Help would be pretty sweet.
    Thanks,
    Jason

  • Problems with wireless mouse/keyboard after upgrade to snow leopard

    Hi!
I am wondering if someone has some insight for me.  I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard from Tiger. I have been using a Logitech S 530 wireless keyboard/mouse combo for a few years.  I am now having problems with them irratically.
    1. When on line and the page is large, I often cannot move the blue bar at the bottom of the screen to scroll to the right. What happens is like a stutter; as I am dragging the bar, it and the page shake rapidly side-to-side. Sometimes, I can drag it to the right, but as soon as I let go, it snaps back to the left.  This does not happen in Word.
    2. When in boxes with dropdown options, only occasionally does that happen.  The dropdown either doesn't show, or it flashes quickly.  Sometimes it will work after clicking many times. This happens with dropdown menus as well as search boxes that have dropdown choices for previous searches or suggested searches a la Google.
    3. When I use my function key or mouse to display all windows, I can't choose the one I want.  Regardless of which one I put my cursor over, only the left-most one is highlighted and comes to the front when I click.
    4. There is a varying lag. Sometimes the system is responsive, and other times there is a lag of varying lengths before the system responds to the mouse action (click, drag, zoom, etc.)
    5. For a while, my left mouse button wouldn't work.  I reconfigured it, that seems to have done the trick.
    6. Today, I can't open any of the menu items on Firefox.  I can move the cursor there, but when I click on any of them, nothing happens. This is okay in Safari.
I have disconnected and reconnected the usb, restarted the computer, and tried to reinstall the software for the mouse and keybord. When I did that, I got a message saying it couldn't install on the current OS, so I went to Logitech and dowloaded and installed the latest version (which indicated it is for OS X 10.6.8.)
I don't know if this is a Snow Leopard problem, but it started sometime after I upgraded.  Thanks in advance for any help!
    Donna

Update all your third party software  or uninstall and reinstall 10.6 versions.
If your going to 10.7, be warned a lot of software will not work at all and your 10.5 era machine will be slow, perhaps even have problems as 10.7 is problematic on older hardware.

IMO save for a new 10.8 machine after this summer.

  • Update 10.5. to Snow Leopard V 10.6 - Safari problem

I have updated from 10.5 to Snow Leopard V. 10.6, now I can't open SAFARI.  It advises that "this version {5.0.6} can't be opened with this version??  I would have thought that when I loaded the upgrade to Snow Leopard that Safari would have updated too?  Help!!

This is one of the most confusing problems I have ever read.
First you say you have upgraded from 10.5 (Leopard) to 10.6 (Snow Leopard).
Then you say that "About this Mac" says you have 10.9.1 (Mavericks).
Then you again say you upgraded from 10.5 to 10.6.
The only thing that seems to make sense of this, and what I suspect is you got confused, thought you had 10.5/10.6 and borked your Safari install by running an old updater for Safari 5.
That, or you have an old copy of Safari sitting somewhere, and you are trying to run that instead of the one in the Applications folder.
v5.1.10 is the last version of Safari for 10.6 (Snow Leopard), though some dev previews of 6 could be installed.
v6.1.1 is the current version for OS X 10.7 (Lion) and 10.8 (Mountain Lion).
v7.0.1 is the current version and it requires OS X 10.9 (Mavericks).

  • I upgraded to snow leopard, since then safari does open in the dock but does not load as set in my preferences and the title page remains blank even though I have set-up a home page. I completely re-initialised safari, but no change.

I upgraded to snow leopard, since then safari does open in the dock (white dot) but does not startup as set in system preferences. Also, if I open safari, the title page remains blank even though I have set a home page under safari's preferences. I re-initialised safari, but no change.

Having put my home-page under "new windows open with home-page" solves the "blank title page problem".
One problem left: "safari" does not startup automatically as set in system preferences, whereas "mail", also set for startup DOES startup

  • Trouble with Safari and keychain after upgrade to Snow Leopard

I just upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard.  Previously in Safari (with Leopard), when logging in to a website, I entered the first character of my login and, depending on the settings in Keychain, the login/password was autofilled or I was prompted for my Keychain Access password and then it autofilled. This worked great because no one could use my laptop and be able to log in to sensitive websites without my Keychain Access password. And, because I have multiple accounts on some websites, I could choose which login ID to use based on the first character. I don't know if Safari was set to autofill or not, but I suspect not because I never wanted autofill.
After I upgraded to Snow Leopard, Safari would not connect to Keychain at all. I figured out I had to check Safari's autofill User Names and Passwords box in order for it to recognize Keychain. But now it autofills whenever I land on a website login page, even though the Keychain items are set to require my Keychain password. Further, for those websites that have multiple accounts, Safari is autofilling the one that is first listed in Keychain.
What do I need to do for Safari to use Keychain Access without immediately autofilling (like it did with Leopard)?

Yes, thank you. I have done that on most of them and it works well.  My frustration is that the autofill in Safari seems to be the only way to engage Keychain.  When I don't select autofill in Safari, I can't engage Keychain at all (without manually opening it and viewing an individual key).  I'd like to be able to activate Keychain selectively as I did in Leopard.
For those sites where I have multiple accounts, I have discovered that if I deny the first pop-up from Keychain, I can then delete the autofilled login and enter the first character of the one I want, and the pop-up appears again. It's just frustrating to have to take those extra steps.

  • X11 problem after upgrade to Snow Leopard - keyboard unresponsive

I have just upgraded to Snow Leopard from Tiger.
I use Sun's Secure Global Desktop native client which runs using X11. It worked fine under Tiger, but since the upgrade it isn't working - the native client starts up (and starts the X server), it responds to the trackpad and I can focus on the login box, but when I type nothing shows up, so I can't log in!
I installed X11 with Snow Leopard and as far as I can tell it is running OK - Gimp seems to work. The SGD native client log says this:
    Smart card library loaded: /System/Library/Frameworks/PCSC.framework/PCSC
Smart card support failed to initialize (0x8010001d)
    Server version 4 3 0 915
    Client version 4 2 0 983
    Info: local X server available
Any assistance would be very gratefully received.

If other X11 apps are working except this one, then perhaps it's incompatible with Snow. To see if this is the case I would suggest installing Snow on a freshly erased drive (could be an external or other internal) and see if the problem is fixed. Could be the result of upgrading. You did upgrade Leopard, not Tiger, right? Can't do the latter without first upgrading to Leopard.

  • Will i have problem upgrading from Snow Leopard 10.6.8 to Maverick ?

will i have problem upgrading from Snow Leopard 10.6.8 to Maverick ?

Impossible to know. But I would make a backup before doing so, just in case. I would also do the following:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
If you wish to save yourself a lot time should you need to reinstall Mavericks at some point in the future then see the following:
Make Your Own Mavericks, Mountain/Lion Installer
After downloading the installer you must first save the Install Mac OS X application. After the installer downloads DO NOT click on the Install button. Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the installer. Move the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes installing.
       2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
After DU loads select your flash drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the leftside list. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list.
Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to an hour depending upon the flash drive size.
Make your own Mavericks flash drive installer using the Mavericks tool:
You can also create a Mavericks flash drive installer via the Terminal. Mavericks has its own built-in installer maker you use via the Terminal:
You will need a freshly partitioned and formatted USB flash drive with at least 8GBs. Leave the name of the flash drive at the system default, "Untitled." Do not change this name. Open the Terminal in the Utilities folder. Copy this entire command line after the prompt in the Terminal's window:
         sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume
         /Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app --nointeraction
Press RETURN. Enter your admin password when prompted. It will not be echoed to the screen so be careful to enter it correctly. Press RETURN, again.
Wait for the process to complete which will take quite some time. When completed it would be wise to test the installer by checking that it boots the computer and is then ready for installation.

  • Problems opening documents (zip files, excel) after upgrade to Snow Leopard

Since upgrading to Snow Leopard I have not been able to open a lot of files. Mainly, zip files and excel documents (which I had no problem opening before the upgrade. It seems that when I save the files down (from my email or whatever) the files go into the "Archive Utility" program, I try to open them from the Finder but they still won't open (or unzip).
When I go to open an excel document (most likely from a PC user), I get a msg that the file isn't formated for excel. However, before the upgrade to Snow Leopard I had no issue opening this same file in Mac Office-Excel.
Thanks in advance for your help/advise.
    -Katherine

    Hello Katherine:
I have not experienced those problems, but I do not receive Excel spreadsheets via E-mail. My Stuffit Expander version is 13.0.2.
You might want to check your Excel preferences to see if there is a setting that needs to be changed (compatibility?). I use Office 2004 so your version may be different.
You could also trash preference files to see if something happened during the install.

    Because something is wrong.
To fix, try the following in order, testing after each until one of these suggestions works:
    (1) Restart Mac.
    (2) Use Disk Utility to repair permissions.
    (3) OS X Mavericks: Reinstall OS X
    (4) Apple - Support - MacBook - Contact Support
