Upgraded to Snow Leopard/lost all iCal previous info and Firefox bookmarks

I had previously had a major problem with an Apple automatic update and went thru lots of time and trouble, especially with Safari. After more time than I wanted to spend with Applecare...finally having to do a clean install...I was told all was okay. I still had Safari problems, so I switched to Firefox and was able to import the bookmarks from the old Safari. I was assured that the Snow Leopard was worth doing and would be no problem. So much for that advice. Most everything else seems fine, but all of my data on iCal is lost, as are the bookmarks in Firefox. When I tried to pull same up from Time Machine, I get the message that the version of iCal won't work with this version of Mac OS X. I know the info I want has to be there. Any ideas on how to get that info back? Likewise, bringing Firefox from Time Machine has not found my bookmarks.
I would love to not spend forever with Applecare once again. It seems nothing is simple these days.

don't restore the application itself. applications themselves never contain any user data.
it's all stored in your home directory. for ical quit ical and restore the folder /users/username/library/calendars and for firefox the folder /users/username/library/application support/firefox.

  • Will upgrading to snow leopard lose all my info like booksmarks and music?

i just got my copy and was wondering if i would lose all my information

will upgrading to snow leopard lose all my info like booksmarks and music?
Only if you use the Disk Utility to erase the drive as part of the process or a problem occurs. Back it up first.

  • How do I complain I bought my daughter a mac, it's only 20 months old and it's completely broken, we have lost all her business info and photos. I am so not happy

I am so unhappy, I bought my daughter a mac for her birthday and it is completely broken, she took it to the store in London, they told her it is corrupt, it won't turn on and she has lost all her business records and photos. I am her mum and not technical. It cost me so much for her birthday what on earth do I do now. They said she has to fix it herself!!!!!

And does she have current backups of all her important files?
Operating a business with a computer and not keeping current backups is a very dangerous thing to do. Hard drives can fail at any time. Experienced IT people will tell you there are two kinds of hard drives - those that have failed and those that are going to fail. The only question is when.
    Best of luck.

  • Upgraded to Windows 7, lost all my itunes music and podcasts.

Lost all my stuff when i upgraded. Can I retrieve my preferences in the itunes store and recover the songs i had bought?

    Upgraded to Windows 7
You did make a current backup of everything before you upgraded, correct?
Can I retrieve my preferences in the itunes store and recover the songs i had bought?
    No.

  • I have lost all my previous purchases and can't remember earlier account id

I recently bought a moved and changed my email address.   When attempting to load old iTune purchases onto a new computer, I deleted.   I cannot remember my old email address to capture all my previous purchases.   Any idea how to get old Apple ID?   We are talking a lot of music not to mention $$.

If you're able to find even one of the songs, you can get info on the song (Select the song, and go to File-->Get info in iTunes) and it will tell you the email address it's associated with.
You may be able to recover the songs from your iPod.  A software that may help with that is Senuti.  You can google search for it and use that to help you out.
You might also want to check your trash can to make sure they aren't still there.
Lastly, if you still have access to your PC you can try to get a song or songs from there.
Finally, make sure you're doing regular backups so this kind of thing doesn't happen. All it takes is a external mac hard drive, turning on Time Machine, and choosing that drive to back up to.

  • Do your Home Work BEFORE you "upgrade" to snow leopard

Here is my experience with this upgrade... I provide in hopes to prevent others from spending hours and hours with this upgrade...
    1. First, I have 3 video cards in my MacPro. One is an ATI HD3780. Once I upgraded to Snow Leopard, my mac would not boot and just got the black square of death on the screen. I removed the card, then tried to find the new drivers for this card, which do not exist on ati's web site that I could find. I finally found my original install disk, installed the graphics card drivers, reinstalled the card and now my machine boots.
    This Snow Leopard "upgrade":
    2. It removed all my mail plugins, didn't simply move them to a disabled folder, so I had to reinstall them:
    -Dockstar
    -SpamSieve
    3. Many other 3rd Party apps had to be updated. More than any upgrade I have done with the Mac. I had to go thru the applications folder and try every 3rd part application, and a ton of them now had to be re-serialized, and some don't work at all. I had a ton of screen savers that don't work now, and it doesn't disable them it deletes them.
In all this was the most cumbersome "upgrade" I have ever done on a mac, and I have been upgrading macs for almost every version of the os. IF this "upgrade" was labeled as it truely is " a New Install", I would expect all the things I have had to deal with. Calling this an upgrade is downright goofy..
    Good resource BEFORE you upgrade:
    http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/
    Summary:
If you want to upgrade, and you have a mac that has lots of applications on it, you may want to set aside around 4-5 hrs to get your mac working like it was before the upgrade. Also if you have older apps you may want to choose to install rosetta during the install process, and BEFORE you upgrade, get all your serial numbers for all your 3rd party apps just in case. Not all of mine asked for it, but enough did that it took around 4-1/2 hrs for me to get back to the point of before the install. (Glad I didn't install it on all my macs yet!). I am very happy I didn't install this on my work machine or I would be in major trouble, things like fink, etc... would all be trashed...

Do your homework before you upgrade, or prepare yourself and set aside a lot of extra time..

  • Painfully slow internet after upgrading to Snow Leopard

hi all, i recently upgraded to Slow leopard.
My internet has soon become painfully slow, taking (literally) minutes to load pages. I have checked my modem & router, they seem to be fine as my iPhone & Vista laptop run perfectly on the same network.
does anybody know what this could be?

If you have not done so since upgrading to Snow Leopard, you should run Disk Utility and use +Repair Disk Permissions+.
Have you used Software Update to apply Apple's latest updates after upgrading to Snow Leopard. If there are updates, you should run it a second time to ensure there were no dependent updates.
As a test, you can create a new admin user account in System Preferences Accounts pane.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8235.html
Log out and log in to the new account. Try the things that caused the problems. Is it fast in the new account, or is it the same? If it is fast, then the cause is likely to be in your normal user account. If it is the same, then the cause is likely to be with the overall system (the OS).
You can also try doing a Safe Mode startup
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455
This will do some maintenance during startup and also load only Apple's essential system extensions and processes. Any third party software you have installed will not automatically run. Check the performance while in safe mode, and if there is improvement, restart normally to see if the problem comes back or not.

  • Upgrade to Snow Leopard has killed wifi usability

Upgraded to Snow Leopard a couple of days ago and it has significantly impacted my ability to use WiFi, tried on 3 different networks; 2 personal and one carrier and I am either unable to connect or the connection falls out after a few minutes, and when it works the speed is significantly regraded.
Prior to the upgrade I've never had a problem on these or any other wifi networks. Have tried all the proposed solutions I've found on the discussion forum but nothing seems to permanently resolve the issue.
Looking for some new suggestions or a solution from Apple. Being tethered via an ethernet cable seems so old school!

I seem to be having a similar problem but the only option I have is automatic channel selection.
I have a mini with a quickertek nCard in it running at 5 Ghz. Under Leopard I could move it downstairs and everything works great. As soon as I upgraded to Snow Leopard it would no longer work downstairs (signal shows full strength though) but will still work upstairs. Something in Snow Leopard is interfering with performance of the 5Ghz band at a distance. Very frustrating. My only option now is to get the latest Airport Extreme and hope it does better because of its 802.11n at a distance improvements.

  • I have ver 10.5.8 with 4Gb of memory, can I upgrade to snow leopard?

I have a Mac Pro running version 10.5.8 with 4Gb of memory, can I upgrade to snow leopard?
    My info is:
    Processor 2x2.8 Ghz Intel
    Memory 4GB
but when I saw the upgrade for Snow Leopard it said something about needing 5GB?
I'm not the best with tech stuff (obviously never upgraded since I got this one) and not sure if I will be able to.
    Any advice most appreciated.
Need to know as I can't seem to get new itunes to download.
    Thank you in advance.

Luckily prices have dropped while the quality has improved. Your system can take DDR2 FBDIMMs of 800MHz and 667MHz
    2x2GB FBDIMM DDR2 667MHz @ $30

Ideal is to pick up a new drive and leave your system as is and do a clean install and let Setup Assistant merge your old system files.
You may be using the original ATI 2600XT it shipped with? I would replace it with Apple's ATI 5770.
Also plan to start with a new TimeMachine backup set and leave the old one as is, you can reuse it later.
4GB is 'fine' but also is on the "I would not want to run with less" department.
What will make your Mac run faster and smoother is a small SSD boot drive, Samsung 840 128GB.

For now Snow Leopard is still supported but Apple wants to move as many users and systems as possible to 10.9 Maverick, free upgrade from Snow Leopard. But a major overhaul and doing so 10.7 and later dropped support for older applications.
You might even want to see what you use and if you need to purchase or make upgrades to apps you use now in going to 10.6.8.  http://www.roaringapps.com

  • Should I do any "maintenance" before upgrading to Snow Leopard?

Are there any simple things I should do before doing a direct upgrade to Snow Leopard? I have gone through and deleted a ton of files that I don't need, but that's not the maintenance I mean. Should I do a disk repair, clear cache, etc? Anything?

I verified the disk, but it's fine. I also did a permissions repair.
For backups I've used Time Machine (to a 500gb external). I know it's not the best solution, but I like it. It's been working fine since Leopard came out, and I have done one restore from it.
Actually, just tonight I've been experiencing a lot of beachballing, I'm not sure what's causing that. One thing I should point out is that I recently installed some new ram, and I've heard that can occasionally cause issues (but I doubt it's the problem).

  • Upgraded to Snow Leopard, changed Parental Controls

I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard. I used parental controls and had built a white list for my two kids. Now they are able to go to the sites on the list (for instance, youtube.com and google.com), but they cannot go to any other links that are on the allowed domain (i.e. a search in google or youtube).
    Any help will be appreciated.

I have the same problem. This is especially bad for facebook, which always adds stuff to teh end of the URL after the domain. Snow Leopard wants me to add every possible URL the kids visit, which is ridiculous. Worked just fine in 10.5. There are so many bugs in 10.6 I am seriously considering a downgrade.

  • HT6065 I upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mavericks OS X, and lost all of my "on my mac" mail boxes.  How do I restore them?

I upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mavericks OS X, and lost all of my "on my mac" mail boxes.  How do I restore them?

The answer was more complicated.  I had to have an Apple Care tech help me onscreen.  Had to go to Time Machine to restore (which I had tried, but couldn't find the right files to import.  The Mail icon was barred).  They helped me find them.  It was very complicated, with many steps involved.  I never could have figured it out on my own.  Even the tech was not sure how, or if it would work. And it took about 1/2 hour for the stuff to download. But, the problem was solved eventually
.  Thanks again for your help!

  • ICal Duplicate Events After Upgrading to Snow Leopard

After upgrading to Snow Leopard, I noticed almost all my Events were duplicated. The Duplicates were collected from all calendars and are in one of the Calendars (Paul Events). Strangely a new Calendar (Paul Events 2) was created, but deleting this Calendar did not help. Additionally a previously deleted Calendar from months ago was re installed.
I have a MobileMe account that syncs automatically.
Did this happen to anyone else. I am still developing a solution to get rid of the duplicate events, but don't have one yet.

A lot of Duplicate Events, too.
After the Snow Leopard upgrade, performed 10/19/09, and the immediate update to OSX 10.6.1, I wanted to sync my iPod Touch 2G.
I was notified I had 67 iCal events to add, and 18 more modified events (85 total -- (a lot of birthdays). All were duplicates. I didn't sync. Is there any way to delete them?
Also, over the past 18 months of MBP ownership, my alarms for each event have increased to about 8 (they sound once, but I have to clear each of them on my computer screen), And my Contact notes, have doubled+ (as if Copy + Paste were used), with many spaces, and some of the information lost.
I was hoping for a Contacts & Calendar that would match the stability of my retired Windows Mobile Dell Axim X50v, before it took a virus, spread it to my Gateway desktop, completely destroying it (the desktop is NO MORE (couldn't be fixed) and I've retired the Axim).
    What is the solution?
