Upgraded to tiger, mail gets hung up on importing old messages.

I had my pwrbk tuned up and upgraded to Tiger. All files were swept onto a dvd for back up and just plopped back on again after the install. When I click on mail to 'mail' it wants to import my "existing Mail messages into the new version"... so I 'continue' as it requests and (sighhh) it procedes to import (sighhh) my 4500 or so (who's counting) messages. It gets hung up on #1363 (which I believe is in the 'sent' folder) and the time remaining keeps increasing...- I mean - I gave it a chance - the battery (brand spank me new) ran all the way down AND we plugged it in too ... it happens every time. How to bypass this import without deleting all my old emails and just excise the offending hanger-upper?

The conversion from Mail 1.x to Mail 2.x is broken. Even if Mail didn’t freeze while importing, there is no guarantee that it would import the old mailboxes successfully. Take a look at the following thread for an example:
Just upgraded, Most of my old Inbox is gone!
You could apply the procedure described there to the mailboxes that Mail appears to be choking on. Alternatively, you could move the entire account folder out of ~/Library/Mail/ (to the Desktop) and manually import its mailboxes afterwards as Other.

• Upgraded to Tiger; Mail can Send, but not receive... help!

Hi there,
I've come across lots of issues people have had importing all their mailboxes when they've upgraded from Panther to Tiger, but my wife's problem is different - - Mail can Send, but not receive. 'Get Mail' hasn't worked since the upgrade. I've been on the phone with my POP server provider, and all my Mail Account settings are correct. I can send mail, as I say, and sure enough, there it is in her Hotmail web page, along with all the other messages people have sent her in the last two weeks...
So why can't Mail 'get' these messages, if all the settings are correct?
Any advice would be appreciated.
Malcolm

You’re welcome.
If you deleted a POP account, then all the messages stored in that account’s mailboxes has certainly been wiped out, not just moved somewhere, and you were warned that this would happen by the following alert:
Remove Account
Are you sure you want to remove the <AccountType> account "<AccountName>"?
This will permanently delete the account setup information, mailboxes, and messages from your computer. Messages stored on the mail server will not be affected.
To prevent that from happening, you should have moved those messages to custom “On My Mac” mailboxes instead of leaving them in the account’s mailboxes. Actually, using Inbox and Sent for archiving purposes is a bad idea regardless.
If the messages are not on the server and you don’t have a backup (which you should have made before doing something like that), you may try to salvage as many deleted *.emlx files as possible with a data recovery tool such as Data Rescue II, TechTool Pro, or FileSalvage (the files to be recovered would be different in the case of Mail 1.x). Of these, the only one I know for sure that can currently recover deleted *.emlx files is FileSalvage. Stop using your computer right now if you want to try that, as anything you do with the computer may cause the deleted files to be overwritten.

• Mail migration assistant did not upload old messages in inbox during upgrad

The mail migration assistant did not upload the contents of old messages stored in my inbox for mail in panther to tiger. It uploaded drafts and sent mail messages and even the husks of the messages themselves into the new inbox but not their contents, not the information contained in the messages themselves. I see that the old messages are accessible via spotlight but only their external identification remains in the new inbox, not what was in them. Is their anyway to rerun mail migration assistant or the mail setup assistant (whatever it may be called) so that it uploads all of messages from my old inbox under panther to the new inbox under tiger? I believe that while running initaially soon after I launched mail for the first time under tiger, the migration assistant for mail quit early, maybe because I had many messages stored in my inbox.
So my basic question is, is it possible to rerun the program that migrates mail from the old inbox under panther to the new inbox under tiger? If it's not, is it possible to first of all empty out the current inbox with its group of the external skeletal remains of messages but lacking their substance, the information contained in them, and then refill my current inbox with the entirety of the message, i.e., not just its identifying information, its external identification (from whom and about what), but also what the message at one time contained? In each of these messages it only has this bit of information: "The message from 'such and such a sender' with 'such and such a subject' has not downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it." But of course I am online. The online bit I supose the message is about is the being online with the migration assistant, and that's the being online I would really like to go back to I suppose, before it seems to me this mail migration assistant quit on me prematurely, without uploading or downloading, whatever the term, the entire content of my inbox with its batch of received messages. In the process, it did, however, capture the entirety of my drafts and sent messages from their particular boxes.
Please help. How can I redo the migration step from panther mail inbox to tiger mail inbox so that my mail is in its inbox and reachable there as opposed to apparently being searchable by only spotlight?
Thank you.

I am having a similar problem. I just upgraded from 10.2.8 to 10.4.3. It didn't go well (a USB peripheral interfered)and I ended up upgrading while archiving users.
There was no 'restore users opportunity'. I have done a lot manually, which is painful...in fact reminiscent of why I don't like PC's. Anyway, I was able to locate and restore almost all the mailboxes, including a bunch of deleted files from the 'Previous Systems' folders. I still haven't found the secret location of all the email that was in the "Inbox".
I would greatly appreciate it if someone in the know could share where and how to restore my old inbox so I can get my important emails back. Hacking or magic software...what ever it takes.
Thanks

• Mail gets hung up and won't quit completely

More times than not when I try to quit mail all the windows will close but the "Mail" button in the toolbar remains highlighted and it just won't finish quitting. I typically have to finally Force Quit the app.
Also when it is in this state and I try moving from app to app using the Command-Tab. There the Mail icon shows no unread message count where when I'm not trying to shut the app down it does show the number of unread mails in read.
Any thoughts on that?
Thanks,
-Tom

What is the mail envelope index that you mentioned? How do you reset it? I'm actually having a few problems simultaneously:
1. Mail needs to be force quit. - I'm hoping that your Mail Envelope Index reset solves that, so please tell me what that is, how to do it.
2. One of my mail accounts hasn't downloaded to Mail since 10:49 am this morning, but keeps downloading the same message, which is a mail undeliverable message. At 10:49 am I sent a single message to 8 addreses. One of the 8 had a dead address on comcast, and I keep getting a message delivered over and over again with a time of 10:49 am showing that it was undeliverable. In fact, even if I delete the ones I received, they come back again plus a new undelivered one each time I restart Mail. No other mail has come down on that account since 10:49 am. My ISP says that all looks fine on the server, although I see other messages listed there (webmail) that I don't see in my Apple Mail inbox. The ISP is resetting the server account, but I'm sure that's not the problem, and that something related to that undelivered message that I keep getting is blocking the rest of hte mail from coming down or showing. Anything I can try while I'm waiting for their reset of my server account to finish?

• Should I upgrade to Tiger from Panther on a 6 year old G4?

Although my machine excedes the minimum requirements for Tiger, I have held off on upgrading for a long time, because when it first came out, I heard reports that it was much slower than Panther on older macs.
I now, however, have two pieces of software that I want to run that require Tiger, so I am debating again whether to upgrade. My computer is stable and runs well, and I don't want to hurt that or slow it down significantly.
My computer is a dual 550Ghz G4 with 640 mb of Ram and about 5 Gigs of free boot drive space. I did get the DVD rom drive installed when I bought it, so that shouldn't be a problem.
Should I upgrade?

Hi Matthew,
since you already run 10.3.9 it does not make much sense to upgrade. Many of the new features of Tiger will not run on your computer due to limited hardware resources. If you are happy with Panther, stay with it until you buy a new computer. My G3/900 iBook runs happily with Panther as well.
BTW: 10.4. Tiger is NOT slower than Panther, in some situations it is even faster.

• STMS - transports get hung on tp import

Hi
There are a number of threads regarding this and I've also looked at OSS note 71353 but so far none have fixed my problem.
When I attempt to import to my new development environment, the transports just hang. There are no entries in TRJOB and TRBAT. I delete the files from stms, kill the tp.exe process from the OS (Windows) but when I add the files back to the import queue and attempt to reimport them, the little truck still appears saying that the import is already running.
I should mention that this new development system was previously the QA system. It is a SAP_ALL client copy of Production. Even when I choose the overwrite originals options for the import of the transport, it still fails.
Any assistance is greatly appreaciated.
Thanks
Conor

hello Connor,
You had delete old tp log files. Further you also need to delete any old entires from import monitor inside stms. Make sure all tp processes are killed as well.
Once this done try importing again. If it works out fine. If not then trying importing the request using TP commands at OS level.
If TP import goes successfully then try importing another request to check if it is fine. Also check if any old import job is running.
There are lots of checks and a number of solutions to this issue.
I have faced this issue a dozen times and solved it in atleast 4 or 5 different ways.
Regards.
Ruchit.

• Mail crashes if I click on old messages while receiving new

Mail has really become sensitive after the 10.5.2 update.
1. Crashes after showing the beach ball, if I have the nerve to begin using Mail while its still receiving new mails upon launch.
2. Crashes if I use a layout in an outgoing mail and have my digital signature enabled. Won't send. Just crashes after a while.

Mine has just starting crashing over the past few days. It will only stay open for about 10 seconds, and then it quits. I've run the console to see what is happening and this is what I get. Anyone know what this means?
I'm left stranded not being able to use my mail and it's come at a really bad time - in the middle of a number of big work projects.

• Had to reset my Mail now I can't see old messages anymore. How do I retrieve them from my files?

My Mail suddenly stopped downloading mail from my sbcglobal (yahoo) account. I followed the suggestions found in another thread here. Essentially I copied the Library/Mail folder to my desktop, removed the plist file to my desktop, then reset my account. Mail now downloads from the server but I cannot retrieve the messages that were already in my inbox before I followed this process. Can anyone tell me how to get them?

You might be able to re-enable it via this page : http://appleid.apple.com, then 'reset your password'
You might then need to log out of your account on your phone by tapping on your id in Settings > iTunes & App Store and then log back in so as to 'refresh' the account on it.
If that doesn't fix it then you might need to contact iTunes Support : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page

• When I exit mail it tries to resend an old message

let me explain.....
I am using an applescript which runs at 05:05 each day to perform some actions on Omnifocus, when the script has finished I have it send me an email so that I know it ran - this all works perfectly and I get my emails each morning.
However, I have noticed that if at some point during the day I try and quit Mail it opens a new message window which is exactly the same as the message the applescript had sent at 05:05 earlier that morning - if I send the message it sends and if I close the message it closes. At this point I have still not quit Mail.
If I now try and quit Mail it does almost the same thing again but this time it is yesterdays message - this cycle just seems to repeat and each time I get a window for one day further back.
I have to force close Mail.
There are no unsent drafts so I really do not know where to look to solve this problem.
All help appreciated.

C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Mozilla Firefox\updates
(%LOCALAPPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Mozilla Firefox\updates)
Do a clean reinstall:
* Download a fresh Firefox copy from http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all.html and save the file to the desktop.
* Uninstall your current Firefox version and remove the Firefox program folder before installing that copy of the Firefox installer.
* Don't remove personal data when uninstalling.
* It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere (not in the Firefox program folder) and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.

• Do I have to upgrade to Tiger if I want Mac os x 10.4. versions?

I have a powerbook G4 mac os x v. 10.3.9 and I want to upgrade to 10.4 so that I can install new software I bought and I do not see the download for it. I am wondering if I have to upgrade to tiger to get to that version.

Hi vithloca!
Here is some additional info.
Mac OS X Versions 10.1, 10.2, 10.3, and 10.4, are complete system upgrades that must be purchased.
The point upgrades, such as 10.1.x to 10.1.5 (Final) 10.2.x to 10.2.8 (Final), 10.3.x to 10.3.9 (Final), and 10.4.x to 10.4.8 (Pending), can be downloaded for free.
Tiger is available for purchase at The Apple Store (U.S.).
As Ferd II posted, the Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, can also be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, AppleRescue, FastMac, etc.
Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.

• Problem with mail after upgrading to tiger...

When I upgraded the OS in my PowerBook, all the mail messages in my in-box disappeared. Now, the only thing that shows up in each mail is the following, "The message from [Antonio john Doe <[email protected]>] concerning “Stuff” has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it."
The e-mail is also gone from the earthlink
server because they wipe all mail out after a few days. Is there a
way to recover the messages?
Powermac G5 dual 1.8 Mac OS X (10.4.6) 1.3 Gb ram

The conversion from Mail 1.x to Mail 2.x is broken. Take a look at the following thread to better understand the problem:
Help! "You need to take this account online in order to download it."
More specifically, if this is a POP account, the following procedure should allow you to fix the Inbox problem. A similar procedure should allow you to fix other mailboxes that might also be affected:
1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
2. Make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, just in case something goes wrong while trying to fix the problem. You can do this in the Finder by dragging the folder to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, for example. This is where all your mail is stored.
3. Create a new folder on the Desktop and name it however you wish (e.g. Inbox Old). It doesn’t need to have an .mbox extension.
4. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/INBOX.mbox/.
5. Move the files mbox and Incoming_Mail out of INBOX.mbox, into the Inbox Old folder just created on the Desktop. These files contain all the messages that were in the mailbox before the upgrade to Tiger, and maybe even some messages that had been deleted. mbox is the most important. Incoming_Mail may or may not be present.
6. Move any strangely-named Messages-T0x... folders to the Desktop (not into the Inbox Old folder). These folders are to be deleted after fixing the problem. They are temporary folders created during an import or an indexing process, and Mail should have deleted them when done. Their presence is a clear indication that something didn’t work as expected. If you’ve been using Mail after the conversion and have already tried to fix the problem by rebuilding the mailbox or something like that, they might contain messages that are neither in Messages proper nor in the mbox file, so keep them around until the problem is fixed.
7. Move everything else within INBOX.mbox, except the Messages folder, to the Trash.
The result of the above should be that INBOX.mbox contains the proper Messages folder only, and the Inbox Old folder on the Desktop contains the mbox and Incoming_Mail (if it exists) files only. Now, proceed as follows:
8. Open Mail.
9. The account’s Inbox should properly display in Mail as many messages as *.emlx files are in ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/INBOX.mbox/Messages/. If that’s not the case, select the mailbox in Mail and do Mailbox > Rebuild.
10. In Mail, do File > Import Mailboxes, choose Other as the data format, and follow the instructions to import the Inbox Old folder that’s on the Desktop.
As a result of doing the above, some messages may be duplicated now. Andreas Amann’s Mail Scripts has a Remove Duplicates script that you may find useful for that.
Do with the imported mail whatever you wish. You may move the messages anywhere you want and get rid of the imported mailboxes afterwards.
If all is well and you don’t miss anything, the files on the Desktop can be deleted, although you may want to keep them for a while, just in case.
You may want to take a look at the following article (also referenced in the thread I mentioned at the beginning of this post) to learn what you might have done before upgrading to minimize the risk of this happening, and what you may do after fixing the problem to avoid similar issues from happening in the future. DON’T do now what the article suggests, though, as that would make things worse in the current situation:
Overstuffed mailbox is unexpectedly empty
Ask for any clarifications or if you need further assistance.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder.
