Upgraded to USB 2.0 with pci card...works 1 out of 10 times????

Hi,
Anyone having this problem? I installed a pci card with usb 2.0
The high-speed bus is recognized in my "about this mac". However, if I hook up my ipod or any device for that matter, it doesn't recognize it. Do I just need to wait longer? When I first installed the car I did have it connect a few times. But it's very inconsistent. I'm running 10.3.9 and I'm about to upgrade to 10.4. Might this help?
Thanks in advance
Pete

What brand/model card did you install. Not all USB 2.0 PCI cards work in a Mac. Your best bet is any card with a NEC PD720100 or PD720101 chipset (xlr8yourmac results recommend the same). Read this for more feedback: http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/firewire/fwusb_card_deepsleep.html
Stick with the NEC chip, and try NOT to use drivers, OS X doesn't need the drivers.
All of these Cards are NEC chipset based
Adaptec 3100LP
BAFO BF-460
Belkin F5U220
GWC UC-160
IOGear GIC250U & GIC251U
Keyspan U2PCI-5
O'toLink U2-C2A, U2-C2B, U2-P20N & U2-P50
Ratoc PCIU5
USBWholesale UII-PCIP
I recently installed an IOGear GIC251U. Was plug & play.
If you plug your mouse imto the card, does the mouse work?

  • Recommendations? USB 2.0 & Firewire PCI card for MDD Dual Boot G4 (1.25 Ghz

Can anyone recommend a good USB 2.0 and Firewire combo PCI card? (at least 3 USB 2.0 ports and 2 FW) for my G4 MDD Dual Boot- 1.25 Ghz)?
I have an Orangelink+ Micro USB 2.0/FW PCI card from the days of OS 9- that's supposed to be USB 2.0 under OS X, but isn't (it shows up as max 12/mbps in System Profiler). I'd like to get an external Hard Drive and most of them are USB 2.0 now.
    Another question:
Under system profiler, it shows that I have one USB 2.0 port. I'm assuming it's an internal port, because all of the external ports show transfer rates of 12mbps. Is this a correct assumption?
Thanks in advance for any help!

    Good evening,
after upgrading Iphoto 9.5 a page opened requiring to upgrade my library. As it did not work out,for fear of losing all my pictures I  loaded Iphoto 9.4.3  with Time machine but I had lost quite a few photos. As a matter of fact, after searching , I found them In Photo library in 'images' on my hard drive. When I double click, 9.5 appears with all my pictures. Therefore, I would like to use 9.5 just by by clicking on the icon down my finder and  not by being obliged to open my hard drive.
Would you please tell me what I should do. Thank you.
    Best regards,
    Robert

    Huh?
As it did not work out,for fear of losing all my pictures I  loaded Iphoto 9.4.3  with Time machine but I had lost quite a few photos. As a matter of fact, after searching , I found them In Photo library in 'images' on my hard drive. When I double click, 9.5 appears with all my pictures.
So, you have restored 9.4.3 from Time Machine but can see all your pictures in 9.5?
Do you have two version of iPhoto on your Machine?
And if you didn't update the Library, ("as it did not work out,") how can you see things in 9.5?
So, whatever set up you have is confusing.

  • 845PE Max-L problem with pci cards

Got a weird issue with the 845PE Max-L and was wondering if anyone else has come across this. I work in the RMA dept of a nationwide computer wholesaler and recently we've come across atleast 4 of these boards with the same problem. under windows xp it will not detect any pci cards. tried various sticks of ram, video cards, network cards, modems, usb cards, hard drives, pretty much anything we can think of to check for incompatiblities. did the latest bios flash, installed the newest updates in windows xp, but still cant get these boards to detect any pci cards whatsoever. yes we tried different power supplies and yes we tested the pci cards in other systems to make sure none of it was defective, all passed with flying colors. now here's the kicker, under windows 2000 it DID detect the pci cards, however i was unable to successfully load any drivers to any of the devices. We've made a call to our MSI rep to find out if anyone else has run into this or are we just dealing with a bad batch. unfortunatly noone from MSI has contacted us back yet so i decided to try and post here to see if anyone else has come across this odd situation. Any feedback would be much appreciated.

    Weaksauce;
Two replies two separate motherboards.  In reference to the 865 / 875 motherboards not recognizing PCI cards I think your link has something to offer.   :biggthumbsup:I'm not going to go back and test it but the reason the PCI cards were not recognized may very well be that the old bios did not properly inspire the intel inf utility to install the correct drivers.  The force method you suggest may well overcome that particular problem.  I would still suggest that merely doing the BIOS upgrade first is the more elegant approach.
Regarding the usb problem with MS update, the inf chipset article would appear to have little to offer.  The 845 MB uses the Intel 845 chipset which is ICH4 by the way.  The updated inf utility was installed in as early in the process as possible.

  • USB 2.0 on PCI card no longer supported?

Curious as to whether anyone else has experienced the same problem I had trying to update via a USB 2.0 port on a PCI card. I just updated to 1.1.1 yesterday, and while connected to a USB 2.0 port on my PCI card (my old Mac never had built-in 2.0 ports), all **** broke loose after the download was complete and ready to be installed. I've never had problems syncing via the PCI card's USB 2.0 port up to now, but during the "preparing iPhone for . . ." process, my iPhone would not respond to the installer, resulting in an error message. After repeated attempts, I switched over to a built-in USB 1.1 port and then had to do a complete restore (which took several hours), but was successful. Oddly though, after the restore, if I try to use the USB 2.0 port on the PCI card again to sync, I get an error message saying that the contents of the iPhone cannot be read, and that I'll have to restore again (even though the phone is fully functional). If I switch back to the built-in USB 1.1 port, everything is fine and I'm not asked to restore the phone. Looks like I can no longer use my USB 2.0 ports (on the PCI card), which worked fine prior to 1.1.1. I know that my weeks/months are numbered with this older Mac (doesn't appear that Leopard will be supported on this Mac), but I just wasn't planning to purchase a new Mac just yet. Perhaps Apple is now checking for "built-in" USB 2.0 during these updates and not supporting USB 2.0 via a PCI card? Would sort of make sense, given the number of users who continue to have problems just trying to get iTunes to recognize their phone (i.e., eliminate the 3rd-party PCI cards). I doubt I'll attempt another update to my iPhone with this Mac. Let me know if you've had a similar experience using a PCI card rather than "built-in" USB ports. Thanks.

Thanks everyone for the great info!
I had an issue with my wife's Powermac G4 Sawtooth and went out and got a Belkin USB 2.0 PCI card to replace the less compatible usb 2.0 pci card. It looks a card with the NEC chipset definitely does the trick.
Her iPhone now syncs pretty much perfectly on the Belkin card. Yaaay!
Of course, it doesn't help that there is another syncing issue going on right now, which kind of threw me:

    But that's temporary. Thanks again!

  • Upgrade to usb 2.0 with my titanium powerbook?

If I add a USB 2.0 card to the pci slot in my titanium powerbook, is it bad to often disconnect it and reconnect it? I say this because I want my new ipod touch to work, and it wont right now...but I dont want a big thing sticking out of the side of my computer when I am carrying it around. So could I just connect the card whenever I wanted to sync the ipod? thanks.

Hi, bsgroup. Yes, you can remove a USB 2.0 adapter from your PCMCIA slot whenever you aren't using it. There will be no ill effects at all. Just don't remove it while a USB device is connected to it.
However, you should make sure your iPod Touch, about which I know nothing, does not require a built-in USB 2.0 port. The ports on a USB 2.0 adapter card can't supply as much power to connected, bus-powered USB devices as your Powerbook's built-in ports can. I'm not an iPod owner, but it's my understanding that when an iPod is connected to a computer's USB port, it draws its power from the computer rather than from its own battery, and the computer simultaneously charges the iPod's battery. If too little power is available from the port, the iPod won't function properly or its battery won't charge, or both. I don't know enough to tell you what will happen when you connect your iPod to an adapter card. You should post in the appropriate iPod forum and ask others who are more familiar with your iPod model whether any of them have used one with a USB adapter card in a Powerbook that doesn't have built-in USB 2.
I recently bought a USB 2 portable hard drive enclosure and a USB 2 adapter card of the kind you're considering. I was careful to buy a drive enclosure that came with two cables: a USB data cable and a usb power cable, so the drive is able to connect to two USB ports: one for both power and data, and the second for additional power only. When I connect both cables to the two USB 2 ports on my adapter card, my drive (the original 60GB drive mechanism from my Tibook, which I recently replaced with a 120GB internal drive) doesn't get enough power to spin up and can't be used. If I connect the drive's data cable to one of the ports on the card, and the auxiliary power cable to one of my built-in USB 1.1 ports, the drive works perfectly. An iPod can't draw power from two ports, so it has to get whatever it requires from just one. That may or may not be possible using an adapter card. Go into the experiment with your eyes open, and please let us know how it works out for you.
I might mention that the card I bought cost me about $12-13 at a nearby CompUSA store, and bore the store's brand name. CompUSA is about to go out of business nationwide, and if there's a store near you, you might find some very attractive prices there.

  • Wmp 11 pci card work with WPA encription?

I just purchased a new 54G wireless access point since my new laptop (with Vista) doesn't seem to want to give "full connectivity" when using WEP security activated.
I now use WPA and the laptop hooks up fine to the new access point.  My problem now, is all my other wireless computers have the older wmp 11 pci cards, and I don't see anywhere in the setup where I can select "WPA" security so they can see the new access point.
Is there a way that they can work with this new access point with WPA?

I have a WMP 11 2.7 - I know for a fact it supports WPA2 because I am connected to the net using it and WPA2 right now.
I knew it had to work cos I got it working under Ubuntu linux using this
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=1071920&mode=linear
    very helpful guide.
Could not however get the damned thing to work on windows using any of the drivers from this site. So I went back and had a look at the linux guide and found a simple solution. Download this driver
    http://sidulus.textdrive.com/bcmwl5sys.zip
Go to C:\windows\system32\drivers\bcmwl5.sys rename the driver there to bcmwl5.old.sys and unzip the new driver to that location. Restart. Hey-presto you should now be able to connect to WPA and WPA2 networks.
I think this will probably only work for the 2.7 version as that is a Broadcom chipset.
You know what really bugs me tho? I shouldn't have to be telling you to do all this, I shouldn't have to do it myself either. Why the hell does this card not connect to WPA with the drivers supplied on this site?!?!?

  • I have found a person who has a driver software to connect Labview with PCI card. But he says that i need to download a freeware software to configure the PCI card. But you have mentioned that freeware is for GPIB boards. Is it correct ??

I have found a person who has a driver software to connect Labview with a general PCI card. But he says that i need to download a freeware software from NI website to configure the PCI card. But you have mentioned that freeware is for GPIB boards. Is it correct ?? Is there any other way out ??

I would ask the person who told you about the freeware software to help you find exactly where it is. I am not aware of any freeware software for configuring motion PCI cards but maybe the person you know might be able to help you locate it.

  • Problems with PCI card on my Mac G5

I have been having random system wide freezeups on my G5 2.7 purchased as a refurb from Apple store.com back in late March. Other crazy symptoms are Logic Pro freezing, ie - application freezes, and various funky glitches while recording and then stopping playback. I have had the computer put through a battery of diagnostics at my local Apple store and all components, RAM (4.5GB), 3 hard drives (the Mac HD, the audio hard drive mounted internally and a Lacie firewire 800 drive for the Ivory samples), the computer itself, optical drive - all come up perfectly sound.
Using my Apple Care technicians instructed me to elliminate one by one my peripherals which include the Mackie Control Universal, Motu Micro Express Midi Interface, Ivory Grand Piano Software, my Korg Triton, and in the beginning my Echo Mia PCI card. Oh yeh and Logic Pro 7.2 was removed to see if that was the problem.
The only thing that caused the problems to stop was the removal of the Echo Mia card. Also tried changing it to a different slot to no avail. So the Echo tech support was contacted and even though they refused to believe that their card was the problem they took it back. So since the Mac 1/8 inch inputs and outputs are anything but professional filled with groundloops, beeping and hums I did a forum search on many differnet forums to find a card that would fit my needs inexpensively until I finally get the Apogee Ensemble that I'm waiting for. The same name came up for bringing audio into a Mac via the PCIX slot for a small sum of money - ESI Juli@. Many people said this was a quality unit with a good track record for being used on a G5. I have the most updated drivers from the ESI company. Darned if I'm not discovering the same freezeups and glitches with this card.
I have come to understand that these cards should work in my computer, hassle free. I have a G5 2.7 with supposedly 3 PCIX slots. What am I doing wrong here? Are there voltage issues here?

Turned out to be a corruption in some Logic preferences. I believe this was because of a bad chip of RAM I had. It took weeks to figure out why I was having glitches and system wide freezeups. One day the Apple Hardware tests came up perfect and then another day the "quick test" showed a RAM error.
I had to delete a file called "logic" and a loose file named "apple.logic.plist" (something like that). As a result of that I lost my templates and settings. Then I had to reset the startup assistant in Logic. I think a handy shortcut, although I am a newbie to Logic, is to formulate a song (file) and name it "Marks template number one", then save it as a template but don't erase the file. Then if you lose your templates like I did, because of the corrupted preferences, the song file still is in your hard drive and you'll just have to save it as the template again.

  • Pearl with memory card works until synch with desktop mgr

I have a Pearl 8130 and a 4gb MicroSD HC card.  The card has been formatted and I used the Roxio software from desktop mgr to move stuff to the card.  All was good.  Now each time I connect the pearl and sync with the desktop software, once I disconnect from the laptop, the phone doesn't recognize the memory card.  I have to "add" it each time and then it works fine.  Any idea why my connecting to the desktop software would somehow make the phone no longer see the memory card?  I searched in the support forums and nothing came up.
    Desktop Mgr ver 4.3.0.17, smartphone v 4.3.0.97
Media card support On, Mass storage mode On, Auto enable Mass Storage Mode Yes, Total space 3.7GB, Free space 3.4GB
    Thanks.

hi Sanj, you may try to delete everything form the memory card with a card reader under windows, or also may try to format the memory card to fat32, and then try use it again with your phone. I recommend to format the card with the phone after it started successfully.

  • Card working out of the computer enverioume

Has anyone got a SB card to work with just power applied? OK, here's what I want to do.... The bast way to explaine is to start this way..... Lets remove a PCI slot from the motherboard..... Lets remove the ATX power supply from the computer.... Now, let's connect the power supply to the proper pins of the PCI slot,... follow so far? Put the SB card in that slot....
Now, without software, or anything except the power to power the chips and electronics of the card, what has to be done to have the card work from either the line in, Microphone jack, or both from the speaker output jack?
So, now, let's take this experiment a little further..... Let's say we got the card to work..... (remember out of the computer on a power supply)..... What would the modifications to the electronics be to "find" a "pre-amplified" output.... That would most likey be a 600 ohm audio out, line level? Probally a balanced 600 Ohm output..... Anyone know? Has anyone tryed?....
I have searched high and low looking for engineering docs on the SB 6, and 6 series, and the other cards. Can not find anything on the PCI pin configurations.. Not the "jumpers" but the actual PCI slot pin configurations of the cards....
The idea is to use the SB cards in a vintage Broadcast Sound Console as pre-amplification, amplifiers for the various sound mixing signals . This equipment is a beautiful piece of history, and everything is still in tact except the amplification electronics.... because it's not available anymore and the electronics went in another board before my time.... The idea is to give this equipment a modern "breath" but keep the vintage look..... What a project huh?
All I need to do this is to know the above information..... Thanks
    Bill B

What do yo mean by: "and the other when the microphone busts my eardrum"?
Since they do not work in any device they are broken. They are covered by a one-year warranty like the iPod itself

  • Problem with PCI Card Slot

Is there a way to try to test this thing's PCI Slot?
I have a Dazzle SmartMedia Card Adapter and it has stopped working. Nothing happens when inserted. I bought a 2nd card and trying to install it, the same thing. Nothing. So now, I'm trying to decide if its the card slot, the upgrade to 10.4.10 or Sophos Anti-Virus software.

Hi, Marty. Your card slot's connection to the logic board may have loosened; that happens sometimes with Titanium Powerbooks, especially those that are handled and transported often. Flexing of the PB's case and frame is the cause. If that's your problem, it's very easy to remedy.
Release your keyboard catches and gently tip the keyboard back over onto the wrist rests and trackpad, being careful not to jerk its ribbon cable. You needn't disconnect the cable. Beneath the normal positions of the X and D keys is a translucent plastic rectangular tab about 1" x 3/8". That tab is the card slot's connector to the logic board. Press down very firmly on it with two
fingertips. If you feel or hear it shift even the smallest amount, it was probably a little loose, and is now properly seated again. Put the keyboard back in position and test the card slot. Let us know how you fare.

  • Will it work with PCIe cards for PCs?

Now that the need to support OpenFirmware is gone, would I be able to retire my gaming PC by pulling its 7800GTX and putting it into a Mac Pro?

Now that the need to support OpenFirmware is gone
OpenFirmware may be gone. But EFI is the firmware used on Mac Pro's.
Both OpenFirmware and EFI need a compatible firmware on the video card held in the unit's own EEPROM.
In the PC World, it's usually referred to as a VGA BIOS. Although, it also controls some of the workings of the card and it's identification to the computer (usually).
The big thing is that the card's own firmware allows EFI/OpenFirmware to use the card to boot up. Without it, the card can't be used during boot, and probably not even after the drivers have initialized (if they even recognize the card).
Anyone trying the PC Cards should probably know this.
Unless it has a EFI compatible firmware code on the card, it simply won't work.
The only way it would is if Apple had an identical version of the PC Card, and it was possible (??!) to pull the firmware off the Apple card and flash it into the PC card.

Hi can anybody help me .
we have few sites with old 1232 ag AUTONOMOUS existing AP's , They are  connected through 1 mbps link to main office .
Now we are planing to upgrade with WLC 5508 and few 1140 ap . but we want to use these same 1232ag ap on some sites.
So we need to upgrade it to LWAP .

2>Which is the ios i should download , is it avaliable in cisco site (as this ap is end of sale now )
3>can any body help me how the step to upgrade this autonomous ap

Just to add, the 1230's are not supported on the 7.2.x wlc code. You can however run the 7.0.x on the 5508 to support the 1230's. Also make sure you look at this link, because you might have to add the hash value to the wlc in order for them to join. It depends when the APs were manufactured.
