Upgraded to Yosemite = No Finder, No Sound, No Menus, Spotlight not working
I downloaded Yosemite and immediately afterwards I noticed huge problems. I have no sound. Clicking on Finder brings up an empty window that has the different colours of grey/white that are in the Finder but nothing else - no words, no exit button, nothing. Spotlight doesn't search for anything on my Mac it just searches the internet. Google Chrome is unusable because the screen is constantly flashing white horizontal lines/bars (whenever I move the mouse, type something in, watch a video etc.) There is nothing in any drop down menus (sorry I don't think that's what they're called) I can see the top menu but when I click the apple logo for example there is just a long white bar, nothing in it. Same with everything else. The top header bar is all there but the writing is uneven... the battery percentage, date and time are not centered but pushed way up, my name on the right is in a smaller font and is also raised up from the center. After I opened finder it is one big window that I can't get rid of, quit out of, nothing. If I try moving it it resets itself to the center. I've found some things online that say there could be corrupted files I have to get rid of but I can't search for them in spotlight or manually look for them in the finder window since spotlight won't search for anything in my mac and I can't see anything in the finder window.
The one thing I haven't noticed is speed difference... everything runs pretty much at the same speed if I can get it to open...
I have a Macbook Pro 13" mid 2012, 2.4 ghz... Intel HD 4000 graphics, 4gb ram, not retina display... that is all I can remember, I can't bring up the "About my Mac" tab because I can't see it. I was also really dumb and didn't make a backup of anything before doing this.

Do a backup. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option/alt key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair and Repair Permissions until you get no errors. Then re-install the OS.

Thunderbolt Bus:Here is a very easy possible solution, worth trying before uninstalling Office. It worked for us so hopefully might work for you.
We installed Yosemite on a test machine to check for problems. Office 2011 for Mac ran and still does run fine on that machine with Yosemite.
As a result we installed Yosemite on our main machines. At the same time we updated Office for Mac 2011 using the latest update 14.4.7. It was at this point that Office started crashing every time a document was opened.
Solution that worked for us.
1 Using Font Book (comes with your Mac) we removed all duplicate fonts. We selected the automatically remove option.
2 Restart computer.
3 Shut down computer.
4 Restart computer in 'safe boot' to do this:
a) Shut down the computer.
b) Press the power button.
c) Immediately after hearing start-up tone, hold down SHIFT key.
d) Release SHIFT key after Apple logo and progress indicator appears.
e) Once computer has opened, restart the computer without holding down any keys.
5 Hopefully all should be ok now. Your machine might run a little slow for a while as it rebuilds caches etc but all ours were back at full speed after a few minutes.

Major Finder Issues (Also Quicktime, Itunes, Spotlight not working)- Please
I have a lot of problems, but I posted in this forum b/c I'm figuring if I can get the finder back I may be able to resolve the other issues.
Here is the situation. I'm running OSX Tiger on a Core2Duo Mac. A few days ago I did a mac upgrade that upgraded Quicktime. Unfortunately, that caused Quicktime to stop streaming a site I use for school. I was getting video but no sound. Quicktime streamed other sites just fine. I came to this website and saw others having this problem. Don't remember exactly what thread I read, but a few threads convinced me that I could uninstall Quicktime and get the old version which had worked for me. I dl'ed Tinker Tool to erase all files with the name quicktime in them (simply dragging Quicktime to the trashbin proved fruitless), including those in the system folder. When I tried to remove the trash it said some quicktime files were in use. So I restarted the comp to kill whatever background programs could have been running. When it restarts, I have no finder. The trash is still full, but I can't delete anything. I can't activate anything in the dock. I click on the icons and they just jump around. All my desktop items are missing. I couldn't even get online b/c firefox wouldn't activate and I don't keep Safari in the dock b/c I prefer Firefox.
I ran disk repair and repair permissions. Nothing changed. I added a new user account and this is how I was able to get online. Although all the problems I mentioned still exist, this account has Safari in the dock and the program opened so here I am online. So far the only programs I can open from the dock are dashboard, mail, addressbook, system preferences, and safari.
I'm guessing I deleted something that was vital to the system. But all I deleted were files with quicktime in the title.
I've tried to reinstall quicktime, but it says I can't b/c there is a newer version already on the drive. But, this version is not really there b/c I cannot stream or use sites that require Quicktime.
Of course, I would just re-install OS if I had backed-up my data, but I'm between external HDs right now.
Can't get access to the Genius Bar until tomorrow and I really need my comp in its full capacity asap. Any help would be appreciated.You are welcome, Anita.
I relate to the economics - I was a student myself (1000 years ago...well, maybe a little less).
When you do get an external HD (I bought my last one for under a $100 on the Apple on-line store), take a look at a little program called SuperDuper ($28 at www.shirt-pocket.com). SD makes bootable clones - pretty fast after the first one. I have no installed OS X 10.5, so I have not had a chance to look at Apple's built-in backup feature. -

I upgraded to Mountain Lion yesterday, but since doing so I find that my 1Password app will not work. I have checked for 1Password updates but there are none. Is there a compatibility issue
Hmmm...I'm using 1Password Version 3.8.20 (build 31499) with a fresh install (scrape and pave) of Mt. Lion on my iMac and it's working fine.
I use Dropbox to sync 1Password so for my fresh install I simply downloaded 1Password from Agilbits website and installed it.
Have you tried reinstalling 1Password? Depending on how you purchased it, download it from their website or from the Mac App store to reinstall/replace it. (IIRC v3.8.x comes directly from Agilbits and v3.9 from the Mac App store.) You shouldn't have to uninstall it, the new download should overwrite the existing copy.
As with anything else, be sure to run a backup first!

I have just downloaded Yosemite but I find that Photoshop Elements 11 does not work properly. If I use a tool like a paint brush or spot healer I cannot paint a full stroke does anyone else have this issue or know a solution?
Many thanks that does work. But it now leads to another question is this simply a trackpad issue and if so will it be fixed? I use Elements every day and was thinking I would have to go back to Mavericks.

Before you go through that trouble open About this Mac > More Info... > System Report > Audio and see if the system actually knows it has a microphone. Then you can look into Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup and see if the microphone is there, select it and make sure the sliders are set to full. Then in System Preferences look for Sound > Input and make sure it shows up there and the sliders are at least half way up. If none of that works do a

There is a world of information in these forums if you use the search function near the top right of this page. Just type in NAS for example and you get many threads on the subject (marked with a green checkmark if it solved the question) another example would be Airport Exterme and sound system. Once you formulate your ideas better then specific questions can be addressed one at a time. You may find that a less expensive choice for a server might be a mac mini. Good luck with your project, ask more specific questions and update you systems profile.

In most scenarios you shouldn't need to forward ports, however if you need to, you may be best contacting your ISP.

If you are running Lion or Mountain Lion, the drivers are downloaded from within Bootcamp Assistant. If you are running Snow Leopard the drivers are on your Snow Leopard install disk.

I had a repair done on my MacBook Pro and had to have a new hard drive installed. The Apple Auth Repair Shop then updated the OS from 10.6.8 to 10.7.5. Now my iPhoto v 9.2.3 will not open and it sounds like it will not work with this OS. Can you please advise?
You may need many other updates to retain compatibility with Lion. I suggest you reinstall Snow Leopard. Unfortunately, you will need to erase the drive first. Be sure to backup your data if you haven't done so already.
Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer. Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the "C" key. Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.) Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. After you finish Setup Assistant will complete the installation after which
you will be running a fresh install of OS X. You can now begin the update process
by opening Software Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your
installation current.

iOS 4.2.1 is the latest version of iOS for the 3G.
Facebook and Whatsapp both require 4.3 or higher.
If you want to use those apps, either use the old version that should be in your iTunes library or upgrade the hardware to a 3GS or newer device. -
