Upgrades on G550?

I got a G550 (2958-ACU) the other day and wondering what upgrades are available? Can the CPU or wireless be upgraded for future reference? I still have my old workhorse (A31) whch had a 1.9G cpu and I upgraded it to a 2.4G cpu. Didn't know if it is possible to do it on the G550.

  • Need to know if I can upgrade the G550 CPU

    I have a Lenovo 3000 G550 (2852DU).
It currently has a Pentium T420 (800FSB) and I believe this to be a bottleneck. I'm in for a really cheap CPU upgrade. I'm eyeing the P8600 (1066FSB). However, I do not know if it is compliant with the G5500's motherboard.
I know there are threads on here saying that the upgrade is possible if I have the GMA450 chipset (and not the nVidia one), but try as I might, I'm not able to get the Northbridge/chipset information from my system. I'm running Arch on the system. I'm thinking Lenovo just didn't fill in the 'metadata' for that part, but could be wrong. Need the vets on here with their suggestions.

  • Upgrade to Win 8.1 fubard my webcam

Hello all. I sincerly hope I posted in the correct board.
Since upgrading my G550 from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1 several months ago, my onboard webcam refuses to work. It worked fine before the upgrade. I had to resort to using my separate Logitech webcam instead. However that no longer works due to physical damage, so now I want to get my onboard webcam working again.
Any applications that use the webcam, such as Skype, display a black screen where the video should be. There are no warnings such as "no camera detected". It's like the camera is turned on but it's displaying a non-lit room.
Checking my Device Manager under Imaging Devices, it only shows the USB2.0 Camera. That was the Logitech webcam. I've uninstalled this but after rebooting, it keeps coming back ... without the Logitech plugged in. I absolutely no longer have any Logitech software or hardware installed.
I've tried updating my drivers but my system says that I currently have the latest driver installed.
    Any advice would be appreciated!
    Thanks!
    - Dale

Yes, to be able to use a feature that only the Pro version has, you're expected to pay for the Pro version.  That's how business works.  Were you hoping someone would tell you how to get Hyper-V for free (i.e. illegally)?  Think about it.
Assuming you're going to try to write and sell your own app for Windows Phone, would you want people trying to just take it for free?
I suggest, if you're going to get a whole new version of the operating system anyway, that you consider getting a physical disc (i.e., a full Windows 8.1 Pro license with a disc in a box).
Think ahead to when you might need to boot it up to restore it, etc.  Yes, I know buying a full license will be more expensive, but what will your time be worth when it really matters and you have to boot from the disc e.g., to restore a System
    Image backup or some such?
That being said, I believe if you're vigilant and careful during the installation of a Windows 8.1 download, you will be provided with options that will allow you to save the .ISO file and burn your own DVD with the installation software on
it.  That may be a less expensive way to go for you.

  • Lenovo G550 Windows 7 Professional Upgrade

This Notice refers to 2958-A5U and 2958-A4U models of the Lenovo G550 notebook PC’s only.
The 2958-A5U and 2958-A4U G550 systems ship preloaded with Windows XP Professional, and include a Windows 7 Professional upgrade disk.
Issue: When upgrading from Windows XP Professional to Windows 7, some users have been unable to successfully complete the upgrade.  The most commonly reported failure point is when the customer is asked to insert a Certificate of Authenticity (COA) key. The Microsoft Upgrade process for Win XP to Win7 requires the upgrade to be executed from a ‘cold boot’. If the Windows 7 DVD is inserted while the system is running, the installation process will auto run. However, at the end of the installation process, the system will ask for a 25-key Certificate of Authenticity (COA). The Win7 upgrade process will not successfully finish the installation using this method. The installation DVD must be inserted while the machine is powered off and not running.
When upgrading from Windows XP Professional to Windows 7, Microsoft advises that this process be done via a custom ‘clean’ installation.  Per Microsoft.com; "A custom (clean) installation erases the contents of your PC's hard drive. Your files, settings, and programs will not be transferred to Windows 7".  The clean install will remove any pre-loaded software applications, including VeriFace, One Key Recovery, and other applications that were installed by Lenovo or the user.
Customers should review the following information prior to performing the Windows 7 Professional upgrade.
The Windows 7 installation procedure provides a clean installation of Windows 7 Professional edition. During this process, all contents of the C: drive including all applications, files, programs and user data will be archived in the Windows.old folder.  The data should be available for access, but the applications and programs will not run, and Windows 7 appropriate versions will need to be installed. Lenovo STRONGLY recommends that external backups or all user data are made prior to initiating the upgrade in order to prevent permanent data loss.
    Correct Windows 7 Upgrade Procedure:
    1) Power off system
    2) Insert Windows 7 disk in the DVD drive
    3) Power on system and press F12 to access the boot order menu
    4) Select the option to start from the DVD / Optical drive
    5) Follow the on screen directions as Windows 7 installs
    6) Remove the DVD at the end of the process and reboot to Windows 7
Windows 7 has native drivers that will fully support most of the hardware on Lenovo G550 systems.  In order to maximize the functionality of the Trackpad and the Power Management system, the appropriate Lenovo drivers must be installed. The most current Lenovo Windows 7 drivers and applications are available for download here. Please check this site periodically for updates.
Recovering to Windows XP by using One Key Recovery:
The One Key Recovery feature can restore the factory XP downgrade preload at any time, but will erase all other data.
Important: All user data should be saved prior to implementing the following procedure
          1) Power off the system
    2) Press the recovery button (small round button next to the power button)
    3) System will start and OKR (one key recovery) application will load
    4) Select System Recovery from the menu
    5) Select option to Restore to factory default
    6) Click “Start” button to recover your system partition
    Cheers and regards,

The recovery disk set is supposed to have an SLP key embedded, so that you do not need to activate it, as long as the disk set matches the OS version that is nominated on the COA attached to the laptop.
If it really does say "windows 7 ultimate", then there is something odd going on. Can you please double check that it says "ulitimate"?

  • G550 Wireless whitelist, which FRU to get for 802.11n upgrade

I have a preconfigured T4300 G550 that came with a 2 antenna 11g WLAN adapter.  I want to upgrade to 11n and am aware of the whitelist.  But in looking at posts here an elsewhere not all Lenovo device IDs will work in all systems so it's not enough to just get a Lenovo branded card.
Is there a dBase somewhere with contents of whitelists for various models?  IOW, where can I find out which FRU I need for this G550 upgrade?  Would a 42T0865 (Intel 4965) be suitable (knowing I'll run just 1 Rx)?
    TIA

Ok, after doing a bit more searching I found a clue in a completely different forum:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2136789&tstart=0
Apparently I must have a neighbor with a WiFi router set to a wrong country region (I'm in Brazil), and according to the (foolish, stupid, and all-around knobbish IMSNHO) 802.11d implementation that Apple has chosen to follow in Snow Leopard, it sets its internal card's country region to the region of the first router that broadcasts to it, rather than being smart (like they were in 10.5) and setting it to the country region of the actual router you are connecting to.
I'm using the script that was offered on that page to reboot my Airport interface until it connects using Wireless N. Until then, this is a big AppleFAIL in my book.

  • Lenovo G550 2985 RAM UPGRADE !!!

    Heya,
I was jus thinking of upgrading my ram but I wanted to know the maximum capacity of my ram as one slot is still empty. So I googled and found this link
    http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-3000-and-Essential/G550-Maximum-RAM-capacity/td-p/559341
well according to the thread I can upgrade to only 4gb maximum. But then I did a crucial scan
    http://www.crucial.com/systemscanner/viewscanbyid.aspx?id=4557E54131D926C3
It says I can upgrade till 8gb.
So I'm just really confused if I should go with 4gb or 8gb !! Please help me out as I find this 1gb RAM really out dated . I want to buy a lenovo Z series but cant coz of cash constraints.  Please help me out with the RAM thing.
    Thank you.

    hi jrc50,
Yes, the 4GB DDR3 1333Mhz should work in replacement to the DDR3 800/1066MHz but do take note though that if you're running on a dual core (i.e. T4300 @ 800Mhz FSB), the speed of the ram will downclock from 1333Mhz to 800Mhz.
In addition, see Crucial's Memory Upgrade for the Lenovo G550.

  • Lenovo G550 Wi-Fi upgradable?

    Hello Community,
my uncle recently got a new internet router. Unfortunately, WLAN reception with his Lenovo G550 has been very poor since (almost no throughput at the desired location).
The G550 still has a 802.11g Wi-Fi adaptor installed (BCM 94312MCG). I was wondering if it was possible to upgrade this to a 802.11n device (preferably but not necessarily 2.4GHz + 5GHz). I already checked the insides of the G550: The Mini-PCIE slot is easily accessible and there are two antennae available. The installation procedure isn't a problem for me, but because I had some bad experience with my own HP notebook, which involved a BIOS Wi-Fi adaptor whitelist, I first want to clarify if the Lenovo G550 also contains such a "feature".
Will the G550's BIOS work with any Wi-Fi device in the Mini-PCIE slot or is it restricted to certain adaptors?
    Best regards,
    Christoph

    Hi meinerheiner,

    1. Now I am planning to upgrade by RAM size to 6GB(2GB+4GB) RAM may I know is model (Lenovo G550) supports.
    2. I heard that we can upgrade it but we can't use the 6GB RAM with 32-bit OS  and we can use 6GB RAM if the os is 64-bit os is it correct ? And is this model supports for 64-bit OS installation ?
Kindly let me know as early as possible.

  • Lenovo G550 processor upgrade

I am upgrading a Lenovo G550 that I purchased a few years ago for my wife. So far I was able to install 8GB or RAM and a 500GB HDD with no issues. However when I tried to upgrade the processor, the laptop would not power up. It will turn on and the lights will indicate that the HDD is on and the battery is on, but I do not get the Lenovo splash screen. I hear my fan going but nothing happens. Only a black screen. I purchased an Intel Core 2 Duo processor P7550 (2.26GHz, 1066MHz FSB, 3MB L2 Cache) based on the speciation sheet below. I was wondering if anyone might know where I could find any documentation that specifically lists what CPUs are compatible with the Lenovo G550. Ideally I'd like to install the best processor it will take. Thank you.

    hi there,
I haven't seen a G550 with a Intel Core 2 Extreme Mobile QX9300 CPU but if you bought it working from a G550 laptop or it has a lenovo FRU on it then it may work (it'll also good if you can return the item just in case it doesn't work).
In addition, take note that the QX9300 has a max TDP of 45W, whereas the CPU's listed in this pdt datasheet are only 35W so the motherboard might not take the heat if the QX9300 reaches it's peak usage.
Also, I've looked into some additional details and these are the CPU's that are tested to work with the G550.

  • G550-20023 Cpu Upgrade X9100 or Q9100 ????

    Hello
my friend actually  using Lenovo G550-20023
    Cpu inside is c2d T600 2.2 GHZ
    Everest showed chipset ıntel gm45
ı want upgrade Quad Q9100 or Quad X9100  possible !!!!!!
I red few websites, but many opinions
    Many thanks

The CPU is soldered to the logic board.  As Retired Engineer indicated, there are no sockets.  As such, you would need to unsolder more than 450 pins simultaneously in order to remove the processor... as well as be able to re-solder all those pins.  Basically, it's impossible.

  • Lenovo g550 upgrade hard drive and ram

    I have a Lenovo G550 (20023), it has Intel T4300 CPU, 3 GB DDR3 RAM,Intel GMA 4500M graphics card and Windows 7, with 320 GB seagate HDD.
I would like to buy a new HDD.
    I found a 2TB Verbatim drive 15 mm height.
How much drive height does G550 support?
Also somewhere it says that 4 GB RAM is max supported, elsewhere it says 8 GB.
Are there any CPUs with integrated graphics (Intel HD 4000 etc....) available for this laptop?
    Thank you for answers.

Ooops. Yes. Sorry for that silly typo. It is 2 TBs. Here's the info on memory:
    Maximum Memory
16 GB (Actual) 8 GB (Apple)

  • Where is the software for the Lenovo G550???

I want to do a clean install and replace the pre-installed Vista with Windows 7.
I see that the Lenovo G550 download page has drivers for Windows 7, but where is the pre-installed software, like Veriface, camera software, and all other pre-installed Lenovo software? I looked at all OS options for the G550 on the download page, and NONE of them had the G550 laptop software, all they had for each OS option was only  the drivers.
I understand that I can make a recovery DVD, but as I understand  it, it will return the system to the factory fresh state (all pre-installed programs installed, but also with the factory installed VISTA  - yuck!). I didn't see any option to only re-install the  Lenovo software without also re-installing the OS.
When I look at the download pages for other Lenovo  laptops, I see that they have drivers AND SOFTWARE, but the G550 has no software except for the drivers. Since the G550 came with no software disks, and there doesn't seem to be any of the software online, how exactly does one do a clean installation of an operating system, and then re-install the Lenovo software, on a G550?
I was able to find downloads of programs like Veriface on the Lenovo site for different laptop models, but unfortunately those were much older software versions, and for a different Operating system.
Why can't Lenovo post all of the software online? If they aren't going to provide the software on DVD when they ship the PC, then they should at least have it online; so that people can do a reinstallation if necessary. DELL doesn't seem to have a problem putting all of the software for their PCs online, and they also provide it on disk with the PC.
Do I have to find the hidden backup partition and then copy the Lenovo software installation files to a DVD or different drive myself? Has anyone done this, and if so, can they please provide some assistance as to the best way to accomplish this task?
If there is a different/easier way to accomplish my end goal of a G550 with a Windows 7 clean install, and also with a re-installation of all pre-installed Lenovo software, I would be extremely grateful for any assistance. If there is also a way for me to select which factory software I wanted to install, that would be even better ( I don't need all of the crapware that came on the PC)
    Thanks in advance,
    Sven

Thanks, I'll give that a try when I finally get the Windows 7 upgrade disk.
It seems ridiculous that Lenovo doesn't support this product for Windows 7, especially when they mentioned the "FREE" upgrade (with ridiculous "shipping and handling charge") to Windows 7 on the web page where I ordered it. Being a reasonable person, I assumed that when they offered a "Free" upgrade to Windows 7 with the PC, they would also provide the basic software to allow the built-in hardware like webcams to keep on functioning as they did under Vista.
Had I known that they would refuse to offer any software on disks or download, I would have ordered a DELL or some other PC that has a reasonable level of customer service. I am not a typical user; I don't call in for customer support. All I need is the software and drivers, and I will install it myself.
