Upgrades, updates and Photoshop CS3

I've never had any problems with my Mac and its OSX (10.3.9). Yet, there is this nagging question that I thought I had left behind when I opted for the Mac instead of my XP Dell as my main computing environment. I acquired every piece of software to the Apple version.
When Photoshop upgraded to CS3, I figured why not, let's do it!
That is when I discovered that nothing in the computing world is simple. CS3, just as many other newer versions of so many different programs, is not back-compatible. When I lived in the Microsoft world, every program I upgraded was always back-compatible -- all of them. I had three PCs at home: Windows 98, 2000 and XP, plus my beautiful Mac. With my PCs I was guaranteed back-compatibility on upgrades of Dreamweaver, Roxio, Photoshop and a bundle of other programs.
But, my Mac with its OS X 10.3, which I bought a lifetime ago, in computing terms, is destined to the junk heap, even though it is running ever so smoothly.
I know that Apple, just as Microsoft, is in the business of making money, but the thought that no program is compatible with just one version away is ludicrous. I have some PC programs that could run on Windows 95, if I had that system in my computer.
As late as it is in the game, the whole thing makes me wonder which problem came first: the OS or the program. Is Apple to blame because Tiger or Leopard are so much different from Panther that nothing modern can run on the 10.3 version? Or is it Adobe and PSCS3? Or is it Roxio that came up with version 8 of Toast that won't install on 10.3?
Sorry about dumping this nit-picking on this group, but it is exhausting and frustrating this battle against upgrades and updates. Or, I might be wrong and we are actually supposed to march single-lined down the software road. Don't take me wrong, I love my computers, but for crying outloud, give us an update not an upgrade!
Thanks

You're Welcome Prskater!
"Beta 3 for Mac is only for Tiger..."
According to THIS PAGE, the System Requirements are Mac OS X 10.4.8 or 10.5.
10.5 being Leopard. But not Panther 10.3.x, as you discovered.

I can't update my Photoshop CS3 in order to open pictures made with Canon Eos 60 D

It's not terrible even if you jump a few versions; the Adobe folks don't want change a good thing, so much of what one expects is still where you expect to find it from version to version.  A person who upgrades from Photoshop CS3 to CS6 will find the new Tabbed View, introduced first in CS4, and probably won't like it (at first), but it actually can grow on you.
With CS6 they've introduced this new "shape layer" abstraction of what was once a fill layer with a vector mask.  Beyond that, I suppose there must be 3D changes, though I haven't the experience to tell since Photoshop CS6 is the first version I've moved up to Extended with.  I admit, the 3D stuff is fun to play with.
Just to give you an idea of what I've been doing with Photoshop just this evening...  My collaborator and I have been photographing carbon stars - red giant stars whose atmosphere contains more carbon than oxygen, and which are strikingly red.  In this image the carbon star, SAO49477 is the red member of the close double just up-right of center.  The red stuff between the stars is glowing hydrogen gas, singly ionized by starlight to emit a deep red color.  Someday it will coalesce and make more stars.

  • Lightroom 2 and Photoshop CS3

I have a problem where changes or if I edit pictures in Lightroom 2.0, these changes are not reflected in the actual picture if I open them in Photoshop CS3.
Is this a known issue with Lightroom 2 and Photoshop CS3 or there is some sort of a workaround?

    >in Lightroom 2.0
Upgrade to Lightroom 2.1 ASAP. Fixed many bugs and it's free.
Anyway. What kind of files? How do you open the file in Photoshop, through the "edit in Photoshop feature" or do you open it separately from Finder/explorer? Do you get a dialog that asks whether you want to edit with changes or the original?

Ned, thanks for responding. Internet access is not the problem, I will have a tower computer connected to Comcast.
Isolating the laptop  from the internet is the issue.

  • Lightroom 3 and Photoshop CS3 do not recognise Canon PowerShot S90 raw files

My husband has lightroom 3 and Photoshop CS3 but they don't recognise CanonPowershot S90 camera raw files. I've tried searching for the problem on internet but can't find anything that helps. Adobe's DNG converter doesn't work either. I've tried different versions of the DNG converter to no avail. Buying a new Adobe product is out of the question.
Another problem is that his e-mail address has been changed so that he can't login to his Adobe account. We used to be able to contact Adobe Netherlands by phone or email but that option isn't available anymore.
    Can anyone help please?

    Go to here:
Adobe - Lightroom : For Windows : Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3.6
    or here:
Adobe - Lightroom : For Macintosh : Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3.6
for the final versions of LR3. Download and install the software. You do not need to remove your present installation first, LR will install over it and fix any faults that now exist.
Your husband can log onto his Adobe account with the old email address and when in the account can edit the address to the new one.

    Hi poetryplease,
Unfortunately, there is no Creative Cloud connection between CS3 and Revel. You can upload your images that you have edited, etc, in Photoshop from your desktop into Revel or download your Revel images to your desktop then open in Photoshop.

  • Camera raw and Photoshop CS3 from Lightroom

(2.5) If I open a raw image from Windows Explorer or Bridge (which I don't use much), Camera Raw 4.6 opens. It doesn't open if I Edit In Photoshop CS3 from Lightroom, but says "This version of Lightroom may require the Photoshop Camera Raw plug-in version 5.5 for full compatibility. Camera Raw version 4.6 is the latest version available for Photoshop CS3".
There are two choices: Render using Lightroom and Open Anyway. If I say the former, it doesn't use the file name, but does something like -2.tif.
I'm not sure what these two choices actually do.
Secondly, if things were working properly, would Lightroom actually open the Camera Raw window? If so, is there anything I can do short of upgrading PS to CS4?
    Thanks.

Just a little history of the profiles being displayed for your camera model. The camera calibration tab only displays the profiles that are specific to your camera and model. The earler profiles were named after the version of ACR that was in use when they were created.
    So.
ACR 4.2 the first profile created for your camera model when support was introduced.
ACR 4.4, Adobe created/ updated new profiles for most of the supported camera models with this release of ACR.
Adobe Standard Beta, updated profile when the Beta of ACR 5.0 and LR 2.0 were introduced.
Adobe Standard, Updated profile for the final release of ACR 5.0 and LR 2.0. This then is the latest profile created for your camera model. I think it should be the closest to your camera standard.
Adobe did not create any other camera matching profiles Vivid, Neutral etc other than for the more popular Nikon and Canon models.  I have an Olympus so I am in the same boat.

  • How to install Camera RAW update for Photoshop CS3?

I know this is an ancient version! But for now it's all I need. Anyway...
My Adobe Updater says "No Internet connection.  Please check your Internet settings and/or firewall.  Waiting for connection..." That's the first problem.  I figured out how to manually update Photoshop and Bridge, but Adobe Updater still shows this message when trying to check for updates.  Also, I've tried to update Camera Raw from 4.0 to 4.6 and I can't figure out how to manually install it.  I knkow the website says to do the following:
    Mac:
Exit Photoshop CS3 and Adobe Bridge.
    Open the Finder.
Navigate to the root of the local disk (not the user’s home folder).
    Navigate to Library/Application Support/Adobe/Plug-Ins/CS3/File Formats.
Move the existing plug-in to another location (for example, a new folder on your desktop). Ensureyou keep this version in case you need to revert back.
Copy the Camera Raw plug-in, Camera Raw, from the download into the same folder as in Step 4.
Launch Photoshop CS3 or Adobe Bridge.
I manually entered "Library/Application Support/Adobe/Plug-Ins/CS3/File Formats" and it says this folder doesn't exist.  Can anyone help me update my camera raw?!
    Thank you so much!

  • New Mac Mini and Photoshop CS3

I'm thinking of getting a new 2.0 GHz Mac Mini but am wondering if the built-in Intel GMA 950 graphics processor has enough horsepower for moderate-duty Photoshop CS3 work (all photo editing) using a Dell 24" Ultasharp widescreen LCD monitor? All the specs I read seem to suggest that the 950 can handle what I'm asking, but I'd like to hear from somebody who is doing CS3 work on a Mini with a 24" LCD monitor before taking the plunge.
    Thanks.

It does indeed mean that if you put 4Gb RAM in a Core 2 Duo mini it will only be able to see 3Gb of it. There is, however, no real downside or risk in fitting 3Gb RAM into the system even though Apple only specs it up to 2Gb. The only 'issue' is that to fit 3Gb, you would need unmatched RAM modules (1 1Gb and 1 2Gb stick) which means you loose the optimum performance of matches pairs of RAM. However, the loss of performance from that would generally be exceeded by the gain in performance from the additional 1Gb RAM available to MacOS.
Upgrading RAM yourself is not easy, but it is certainly not hard for someone with a little experience of working inside computers and who can do such work with care. You need a couple of thin putty knives (or pastry knives if you are more at home in the kitchen than garden) to get the case open, and some disassembly is required, but it isn't a difficult task. If you look down the page at http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/mac_mini/intel you'll see links for a video of what's entailed.

  • Encore 2 and Photoshop CS3 - Anyone Doing This?

I've a question. I'm using Premiere Production Studio CS2 (actually also CS2 Premium with the additional programs) and am contemplating upgrading the PS (only) segment of the "studio/suite." One thing that I use all of the time is Edit In Photoshop from the Encore 2 Menus Panel. I am not planning on going full-boat to CS3 right now, as there is not that much, that I can use, and some growing pains. However, I am considering upgrading just PS to CS3, and wonder if I'll have any problems with the direct connections, that I have enjoyed and use almost daily. I have no problem completely removing PS CS2 and even installing into the same folder structure, if that would help. I usually keep my previous vers. of PS on the machine, until I'm comfortable with the changes, in case a client has some rush job, but I have two licenses and will keep PS CS2 on another machine, probably only upgrading one license.
I asked a similar question regarding upgrading Audition to vers. 3, but everyone, who responded, had CS3 and Auditon 3, so I never quite got what I was looking for.
Thanks for the input and thoughts on this,
    Hunt

    >When you select Edit in Photoshop, Encore sends a message to the system >to open a PSD with the system default application for opening PSD
    >files.
Actually that doesn't seem to be the case. From what I can tell, these calls are piped thru an elaborate network of registry keys specifically created by the Adobe installer. Considering that some people like me prefer to have normal image viewers as default handler, that makes sense as opposed to taking the route of making it a global per-user/ system default. Anyway, of course simply changing the reference works as a last resort.

  • Camera raw - Canon 5D MII and photoshop CS3

    Hi
Just bought  a Canon 5D MII, but i can not open any of my RAW files on photoshop CS3. I does not look like there is an upgrade to camera raw for this on CS3, do I have no choice then to upgrade to CS4?
    Thanks for the help

As Buko says, you can use the free, stand-alone DNG Converter 5.4, but…
    • it represents a further step in your workflow, as you have to convert all your raw Canon files to raw DNGs first before being able to open them in your old ACR 4.6; and
    • you will be leaving a lot of image quality on the table, as ACR 5.4 is light-years ahead of ACR 4.6.
    The upgrade is a no-brainer.

  • RAW 4.6 and Photoshop CS3

I can open my RAW files in Photoshop CS3 shot on Canon 350D, but now using Canon EOS 5 MK ll and downloading RAW 4.6 but get an alert Photoshop does not recognise this type of file, any advice please.

you need cr 5.2 or better for the  Canon EOS 5 MK ll.  ps cs3 cannot be upgraded beyond cr 4.6.
you can use the free dng converter (http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=106&platform=Windows) or upgrade your ps (http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/buying-guide.html)

  • Nikon D600 NEF files and Photoshop CS3

    Hi,
I am using Photoshop CS3 and cannot upload Nikon D600 NEF files--obviously a gap between the two debuts.  Are there any suggestions, or am I stuck upgrading?
    Thanks

You could get Lightroom 5, then output your files as tiffs to be opened in CS3.  I haven't used the standalone DNG converter, so I'm not sure if that gives you the option to save as a tiff also.  You could try the dng converter first to see if you can save as another file type, or use a legacy DNG version that is conpatable with CS3.

I have consistent and pervasive crashes in Adobe CS3 applications, running Leopard on a dual 2.7GHz Power Mac G5. The longer I work in an application, the more likely it is to crash. Ever since upgrading to Leopard, performance and reliability has been spotty at best for me.
Most crashes, like the one posted have that "KERNPROTECTIONFAILURE" and "EXC_BAD ACCESS (SIGBUS)"
I have not yet heard an adequate explanation of what those exceptions mean by anyone on here.
If anyone who's an engineer, developer, or programmer happens to know, I'd certainly like to hear about it.
My primary crash culprits have been, in no particular order: Adobe CS3 applications, "mdworker", Safari, Mail, the Finder, Suitcase Fusion, and others... with the overwhelming majority of crashes going to "mdworker" (something to do with spotlight indexing?)
Hardware checks out with TechTool Pro and Disk Utility. I've been reparing permissions and have gotten some help from the great Scott Radloff, but am still struggling. Lost more work again today in both Photoshop and GoLive. I'm trying to decide whether to go through an entire reinstall yet again, but this time ZEROING ALL DATA on the boot drive before I install. It's a daunting prospect, and I haven't quite made up my mind about it.
I also have a peculiar issue with my keyboard becoming unresponsive (after a period of time of working with several apps open) when optical media is inserted into my SuperDrive. This has only happened since Leopard.
My suspicion has been that this MIGHT be a PPC vs. Intel issue, and that my hardware simply isn't compatible with Leopard.
