Upgrades vs. Virus Concerns

I am a long time Mac user and the thoughts of virus are just starting to come into my thinking.
I do the normal upgrades on a regular basis. For a while when I finish the upgrades I have another window "SuperDrive Update" pop-up that reads:
FOUND KA16 update for HL-DT-ST DVDRW GA11N
Your computer requires this update.
Do not restart, shutdown, or unplug this computer while the update is in progress.
After the update is complete, restart this computer.
If you don't want to update now, you can update later.
I have a rule that if I don't know, I don't click. I do not follow links in emails. I go to sites in question and follow links there. I admit laziness here but I am not sure where to go. So I am asking here. Do I do this update?

This appears to be an actual Firmware Apple Update. Note this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3744
Hope this helps.

Upgrading to lion: concern currently i am running Mac OS X 10.6.8 (10K549) with a windows dual boot (boot camp) on a imac, hardward configuration is good. my question is if i upgrade to lion will it effect my boot camp windows environment in any manner shape or form or will it stay pristine and I will be able to access it with no problem.   as for the upgrade does it give you a clean install and upgrade options
    any insight would be appreciated.
Also has anyone, added another partition and installed lion in their leaving the snow leopard partion intact.

I would ask myself these questions first
What features am I hoping to benefit from by upgrading?
What apps do I have on OSX that I need to still fucntion? (research that they will)
Just a cautionary note - I have had problems, but only upgraded to see what was new - needed nothing, lost a lot

  • Help: Upgrade To OS6 Concerns and Many More!!!

Hi, I just got this phone last saturday and I have been trying to upgrade it to OS6.. I have failed all known attemps that I have read in this forum, ie deleting the 'vendor.xml' and running the apploader.. I have made sure that during each process I DC the network on my pc and closed the BB PC suite also and tried both rebooting methods.. I also don't get any error messages.. I don't have a BB Data Plan because I got this phone from a local cell shop unlocked and its not tied up to any of our carriers in our country.. Therefore I'm on a pre.paid kit..
I have tried the official file coming from the BB site, the one from Telus and then from Aircel.. (I don't have the filenames because they are stored in home pc - I'm currenty in my office now)
This my phone's about: (from the time I got it and until now even with the multiple attempts of upgrades I tried)
    BlackBerry® 9105
    smartphone (3G, Wi-Fi)
    v5.0.0.884 (Bundle 1476, Platform 6.2.0.94)
    3G Bands 1,2,5,6

I guess I'm about to give up on this but still am hoping for any suggestions..
I also have a couple of other concerns hoping anyone can enlighten me on these matters..
    First:
Whenever I use Facebook, Twitter, GoogleTalk, Y! Messenger, AOL Messenger and Windows Live Messenger, I get this notification:
'You are currenty on a service plan that does support this application.. Etc..'
Would this mean I really would need to get a post.paid plan from my carrier for it to work? They charge additional for BB users unlike the iPhone users.. Maybe that's for the BB Data Plan? Can't I use these app relying on wifi alone? Is there a workaround for this if that's really the case?
    Second:
In setting up my e.mail, it only has the option for BES and not for BIS.. Is this a glitch? I would really like to use my gmail in this phone..
    Third:
The right side convenience key does work even if I have tried assigning all the possible options from the drop.down.. The left one just works fine.. Is this a hardware issue?
    Fourth:
The phone slows down when I'm using my 32gb memory even if I already reformatted it from scratch.. It works fine wid my 16gb.. They are both Sandisk and are SDHC.. Is this a hardware limitation because I thot this phone is capable of using a 32gb memory?
    Fifth:
I would be really grateful if anyone helps/answers me on my concerns because I was really hoping on ditching my iPhone for this phone.. Thanks in advance..

  • Bbb virus concern

I clicked on the bbb virus on my iPhone and do not know how to confirm if I have downloaded malware by doing so.
Please help- I ran a check on my PC with no problem, but don't know how to perform this check for my iPhone.
    Tx

There is no known malware for the iPhone at this time. The BBB virus only affects Windows, so you should not be concerned. What I find amazing is that this malware (actually a trojan, not a virus) still catches people; it has been around for 5 years!

  • X200 Vista to Windows 7 Clean vs. Upgrade - Software License Concern

I bought an X200 with Vista (before the free upgrade) and have now purchased the Windows 7 upgrade software.  Most of the tech forums recommend a clean install instead of an upgrade.  Should I worry whether the software I have purchased (e.g. MS Office, Acrobat 9, etc.) will require me to purchase another license?  Or, will it "recognize" my PC if I copy down the product keys?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi
Most software still do not have activation so there it is a question of having the serial number and the matching installer/CD saved.
With Adobe software that uses activation you can deactivate the software before the upgrade and then reactivate again after.
I do not know how sensitive MS Office is. My experience from one system which I helped recover was that Office activated automatically on the same machine again. I guess even if you would be required to activate over the phone there should be no issues as you are reinstalling on the same machine.

  • Upgrading to Lion concerns

Just wondering, if I upgrade to Lion from my current Snow Leopard OS X 10.6.8 will all my info stay on my imac.  Including photos, emails, etc.
I am running time machine backup, but I'm not even certain if it will run correctly on the new opperating system.  Will I have to reset up the time machine?
And will everything backed up on it currently still be accessible in the new system?

You don't need to go through Migration Assistant since you will be upgrading the version of Mac OS X on the single machine.  All material SHOULD convey over, however, it is always wise to make a clean backup before doing a major upgrade just in case something goes wrong.
It is also wise to go through your settings, such as email, networking, etc., before and then after the upgrade to make sure nothing has been changed during the process.
With the upgrade to Lion from Snow Leopard, you will want to go into System Preferences, iCloud and setup your iCloud account if you already have one.  If you don't and do not plan on using iCloud then there is nothing you need to do.
It is also good to check Time Machine after the upgrade to see nothing has been changed.
    All just good housekeeping principles

  • Virus concern/question

I was cleaning off my desktop and noticed there was an icon on there with the name FCD58B00.  I tried to open it to find out what it was and could not open it by clicking on it or right clicking an telling it to open.  I tried to trash it, says cannot be deleted. I googled it, about 5 strange things come up but none that seem related that I can tell.  Anyone know what it is??  I ran Sophos scan on my computer but it found nothing.  Thanks.  It's bugging the heck out of me!

It's unlikely a virus. You can try:
Open Terminal in the Utilities folder. At the prompt paste the following:
         sudo rm -Rf
Leave a space after "-Rf" and select and drag the icon from the Desktop into the Terminal window. Press RETURN. You will be prompted for you admin password. You will not see your password echoed to the screen so type it in carefully. Press RETURN again.

  • Hyper-V host server upgrade from Server 2008 R2 Enterprise SP1 to Server 2012 R2 Datacentre

We are about to upgrade our Hyper-V host servers from Server 2008R2 Enterprise SP1 to Server 2012 R2 Datacentre to take advantage of the latest Hyper-V features.
This only concerns the host servers and not the guest VMs running on the hosts (they will be upgraded next year).
This is what is running on our host servers:
    Host 1
    File,print & issuing CA server
    Exchange 2010
    SharePoint 2010
    Quickbooks server
    Domain controller 1
    Offline CRL CA
    Host 2
    SQL 2008
    Forefront TMG 2010
    Domain Controller 2
    Windows 7 client
With this is mind, I have drafted a rough action plan as follows:
Create a list of all file locations for VM memory, snapshots, virtual memory and Hyper-V config files
    Document all existing system settings
Gather server information, download drivers, RAID controller and other boot drivers & firmware updates (in case the in-place upgrade fails)
    Test all software media
Copy all VMs onto external data storage (NAS drive)
As part of the upgrade process we will redistribute some hard drive space i.e.
expand them to their new sizes and verify the data integrity of copied VMs by powering up each VM in a test environment
Wipe and adjust the sizes of the host partitions to accommodate the expanded VMs
Perform an in-place upgrade to Server 2012 R2 Datacenter
    Check EV, services etc
Change the default locations for VM memory, snapshots, virtual memory and Hyper-V config files
Upgrade Anti-virus and other system software
    Test the system
Are there any glaring omissions? Does anyone have any tips they can give me?

    Hi Marco,
always do a fresh Installation of your hyper-V Hosts, you could end up doing a lot of Troubleshooting with Drivers,Addons etc.. new Installation ist way faster.
Depending if you have a Cluster or Standalone Servers there are different ways to do it.
When you have installed your 2012 R2 Hyper-V Server you just can Import the VMs from the new Location.
As far as i know VMs with snapshots are not supported, so you have to remove them before doing that move and commit the changes to the vhd files, the VM need to be offline on 2008R2 to do that.
You do not Need to Export the VMs on 2008R2, just copy it, normaly you should have all Files of a VM in one Folder.
A working Backup is always your friend on such Tasks.
When the VMs are running on Hyper-V 2012R2 do not forget to Update the Integration Services.
Make Sure your Servers Hardware are still supported with 2012R2, see Server Catalog and Support Matrix of the Vendor.
And last one, where possible and supported convert the VHDs to VHDx Disks, after testing the first boot of the VM.

  • How do I reinstall iPhoto 08 if I got the upgrade based on purchase date?

Based on the purchase date of my macbook pro I got the update from iLife 06 to iLife 08 for free. All was fine, until I upgraded to Leopard via archive and install. Now I need to reinstall iLife (iPhoto seems fine, but iMovie is complaining about missing components) but since I only have disks for 06 (System Restore) I'm not sure how to go about updating again to 08.
Is there some link, or will Software Update automatically figure it out based on some Apple VooDoo?
Or can I get new disks from an Apple store if I show them my receipt with purchase date on it?
    Thanks!

Hah, reply to myself. Looking back at the receipt, apparently I ordered on Aug 9 and it shipped Aug 11. So the system ended up with the 'new build' on it from the beginning because of the timing between order and ship.
That's why I couldn't remember how I got the upgrade - I was concerned about whether or not I'd have to do the $10 upgrade "uptodate" program, but the lag worked in my favor and the new version was bundled.
I just re-installed iMovie and its version 7.0 (which is correct for iLife 08, less some subsequent updates).
Move along, nothing to see here....

  • I have mac pro quad can i upgrade from leopard to lion on one of the hardrives and then drag all my protools sessions into from the leopard hardrive to the lion hardrive thanks

i run a commercial recording studio since 2009 and purchased a mac pro quad core with os x 10.5.8 and record with protools,   it has now got to the point where i can no longer purchase plugins for protools because the operating system is to old i need at least snow leopard ,i have never upgraded and am concerned about losing any previous protools sessions and plugins ,it has been suggested to me to upgrade just one of the hardrives to snow leopard or lion or the latest system and then just open a protools session on the old osx hardrive and save to the new upgraded hardrive , is this possible? or has anyone any suggestions ,many thanks

You should seriously consider establishing a Boot drive, with only System, Library, Applications, and the hidden unix files (including Paging/Swap) on it. User files are moved off to another drive.
This makes maintaining the System and maintaining your User files much easier, and it makes your Mac faster in every way.

  • Upgrading SSD on Macbook Pro Retina

I am considering getting the OWC SSD upgrade for my MacBook Pro-R. When I was shopping for one, I looked here and some guys recommended getting storage later either external or upgrade since speed, ram etc were more important. So I did just that, I opted for the bare minimum 256GB SSD.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/SSD/OWC/Aura_Pro_Retina_2012/
It's been good so far and I don't need to upgrade yet, but it will happen eventually, so I figured what the hay, might as well do it now so I don't have to transfer a lot of stuff later.
It is pretty straight forward upgrade, but my concern is OSX, how do I take it off my old SSD and put it on my new SSD? I'm not entirely familiar with Mac and OSX and there's been a lot of learning going on since I made the switch from Windows to Mac.
If you guys can explain, link, or refer me to how to restore my OSX on the new SSD that'll be greatly appreciated.
My assumption is I need to buy the external optical drive and make a back up CD/DVD.
Well thank you for reading and the help.
One more thing, how does upgrading my SSD effect my AppleCare and Warranty? I'd like to think it doesn't, but I have a strange feeling it does.

Newbie here...I would like to upgrade my HDD to a Crucial or similar 500 gb SSD. I am hearing that there are conflicts with SSD's and the Yosemite OS, any help or advice would be welcomed. Macbook pro (5.1).

    Hi...Quick response.
I have been checking with other forums and various " how-to" groups about the upgrade. The concern is about using third party non-apple SSD's and only Yosemite and not Maverick or previous OS's. The SSD will eventually bog down because of the accumulating erased data and poor trash control, there are other issues involving security , and something about Trim enable and disable. I haven't tried anything  nor bought an SSD yet, I am just concerned about screwing something up.
