Upgrading 10.3.9 to 10.4 from OSX DVD disc problem

I have G4 867MHz, 768 SDRAM, Boot ROM v4.2.8f1, AGP nVidia video card, and a Sony CD-RW with no DVD-ROM. I tried to install Tiger from a Sony External, USB DVD-RW / DVD-ROM, using the Apple retail OSX Tiger DVD, and get message, "unable to install from this disk." I do not have any virus software installed. Is the "Boot ROM v4.2.8f1" the "firmware upgrade" that I read I should have installed? I don't see anything in my G4's About This MAC that shows current running version of anything called "firmware."
My G4 has two hard disks, with OSX 10.3.9 and all apps installed on one, and the second disk has three, equal-sized partitions / volumes, 42GB each partition, that I've used for partial backup of music files, etc.... and both hard disks are writable, journaled HFS+.
Please direct me to a step by step install procedure, written in simple language that doesn't assume I know what every MAC term means?
I apologize, but I get confused when I'm asked about "verify disk" and "permissions" and "backup" when all I hope to do is upgrade from 10.3 to 10.4.
Do I need to reinstall 10.3 first, after backing up my hard disk, before 10.4 can "continue" to be installed? Will all my apps and music now on my main, system hard disk be erased when I install Tiger? I feel lost about what might happen if I screw this up, and lose all my stuff.
If I backup with CCC, can it be easily be "restored" to my original hard disk if erased during installation of Tiger? Why is this upgrade so hard to happen?
If this info already exists in Apple Discussions, please direct me to it, as I haven't been able to find it. Thank you.

Remember, if you clone your Install Tiger DVD to one of the partitions on your second hard drive, then that partition is your is your boot DVD. It will contain all necessary Utilities to repair your startup drive. And if for some reason you are not able to startup from your boot drive, then you will not be able to access your drive utilities.
I was able to do this a few year back with Carbon Copy Cloner as well as Disk Utility using an OS 10.2 DVD. I am now running that OS on a unsupported Power Mac. However that is all experiential and there is absolutely nothing of any importance on that computer. Let me also add that I used Xpostfacto which may have help the booting process, that really I don't know. But Tiger is a far more sophisticated OS and I am not sure if will work. And even if it did, it would be like having a new car with the hood and trunk welded shut. I think the exchange program is your best option.

  • HP ENVY dv6-7246us SSD Upgrade, Problem Installing Windows 7 with boot from usb/dvd disc.

    Hello everyone,
I have recently purchased the dv6-7246us and have upgraded the HDD to a SSD. The problem I am having now is that I can't boot from the usb or a dvd disc that contains the Windows 7installation. Originally this laptop had an HDD with Windows 8. I have changed the boot order multiple time to boot from the USB Harddrive and the DVD/CD-ROM disc and still have no luck booting up from the installation. Is there a solution to this problem?
    Thanks,
    Robert

    Hi, Robert:
Did you go into the BIOS and change it to Legacy Mode?
I believe you need to do that in order to boot from another device other than the hard drive.

  • Can't boot from OSX Install disc.

    Hello,
I am trying to restore my iMac from a Time MAchine backup and to do that I remembered that I had to boot off of the OSX install disk and choose Disk Utility. I thought that restoring from timeMAchine would be the hard and long part, but I am having trouble booting off of the OSX disc.
1.) I popped it into my iMac and it mounts and loads. Its runs fine so I know there is nothing wrong with the disc.
2.) I restarted my iMac and held C.
3.) The grey screen appeard and then the Apple logo and then the spinning icon underneath it. But it gets stuck there and doesn't boot off of the disk.
4.) I shutdown the machine by holding the power-button and when it restarted I held D. It ran the hardware test fine and I passed the hardware test.
5.) I shut it down again, same way in four, and held option. This time I chose to boot form the Mac OS X Install DVD. It again got stuck at the Grey screen with the Apple logo and the spinning icon.
Does anyone know how to or can help me get my iMac to boot from the OSX install disc or how I can use Disc Utility to restore my iMac from TimeMachine?
Thanks in Advance & Best Regards,
    theirf.

Sorry, OE = Original Equipment - the grey discs that came with your Mac.
    SL = Snow Leopard - Mac OS X 10.6.x.
    theirf wrote:
What do OE and SL mean?
I think i understand though. You mean that any disc with a higher version of something will still work on a machine with a lower version of that thing right?
Not any disc. The only grey ones that will work are those that came with that Mac.
Any retail disc of a later OS version will work, and in most cases it would boot from an external HD with a later OS installed.
However, as Snow Leopard only came on two retail versions, 10.6.0 and 10.6.3, the choice is a bit limited.
The current retail version is available here.

Old IMAC with 10.5.6 OSX. Forgot Administrator password (which I had already changed.) Followed instructions as per http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1274
Started up from the original OSX install disc 1 and selected "Password reset" from "utilies" in Installer. But HD icon doesn't show up. (Only install disc and admin root available:no good as the support website underscores: Important: Do not select "System Administrator (root)". This is actually the root user. You should not confuse it with a normal administrator account.).
    What can I do?
    Thanks for your suggestions. Antonio

Not familiar with that version of OS X but try using Terminal and type in resetpassword. If that brings up a password reset screen is your original username shown?

  • Install JAVA from OSX-install discs...

    Hi.
I've lost my JAVA (long story :-(), and I was told to try and use Pacifist to install Java from my OSX-discs without having to do a complete OSX-install...
The problem is that I don't know what to install from the discs - when I open them i pacifist, and search for JAVA, there are alot of hits in very different sections of the disc... Does anyone know which "parts" to install to re-create JAVA?
    Brgds, Lars

Thanks Simon, but this is what I'm trying - hence my post above where I ask if anyone knows exactly what to reinstall from the installation-disc (with the recommended program, Pacifist)...
As I write, I've tried to reinstall the java.pkg, but this doesn't seem to be enough, so I asked if anyone knew exactly what I needed to reinstall to recreate java fom scratch?

  • Mac Mini stuck with windows install, won't boot from OSX DVD

Ok, I just bought this mac mini from ebay, yeah i know but it was cheap. I got it and it came with windows xp installed. I thought ok, I will just pop in my snow leopard disk and get rid of windows. so i put in retail new copy of snow leopard in the drive, shutdown, power on, hold C... grey screen for a little while then into windows boot screen. Thought ok, I will try reset pram, option + command + p + r, nothing... just boots into windows. I have tried to original osx 10.4 restore disks that came with the machine with the same results. I also tried holdind D during boot with the original disks and it still does the same thing.
I have also tried holding down option during boot, thinking it would give me my boot options, nothing still goes into windows. I am using a new aluminum white keyed usb apple keyboard and apple optical mouse, all plugged into the back of the machine.
I don't know what to do next, if I can't find the solution it looks like i am going to have to take this thing apart and yank the drive and format it on my other machine with osx partition.
    thanks

There's a couple more options yet.
First, try a different USB keyboard.
Second, when in Windows use the Bootcamp system tray utility to choose bootup from the OSX partition. You can install the Bootcamp system tray utility from the SL disk.
Third, if you have another Mac and an appropriate firewire cable, bring the Mini up in Target Disk Mode and blat the disk that way.

  • Cannot boot from OSX DVD - ACPI error

I am unable to boot from my OSX installation DVD. While booting I receive the following message:
Panic (cpu 0 caller 0x003A934F) Unable to find driver for this platform: ACPI.
I have tried re-installing the combo updater and flashing the PRAM, without any success.
Can anyone PLEASE HELP? My hard drive needs repair and I must boot from DVD in order to gain access to make the repairs with the Disk Utility.
    Much thanks!

Will it run the Extended Tests from Apple Hardware Test (Boot while holding "D")?
If it won't boot from the install disk, it is not a problem with any software on your hard drive. It has to be a hardware problem; probably the DVD drive, since OSX is mostly working. If you have another Mac that can read DVDs and has FireWire, put the DVD in that Mac and boot it in Target Disk Mode (hold "T" while booting. Connect it to the Mac Pro with a FireWire cable, and boot the Mac Pro while holding Option. If the DVD shows up, select it and click the straight, right-pointing, arrow.
If that doesn't work, try booting the Mac Pro in Target Disk Mode (Boot while pressing "T"), connect it to another Mac via FireWire, and try to repair the Mac Pro disk with Disk Utility (Tiger version), or Disk Warrior (version 4 or later).

  • Problems booting from OSX DVD and External FW HDD

I've been trying recently to take a Dual-Bay Firewire Harddrive unit running a Oxford Semiconductor OXFW911 Chipset. I have two 250GB Hard drives and on one of these I have it Partitioned into 3 partitions. One is my Scratch Partition, one is the Restore of a DVD Install Disc and the last is a "Pre-Installed" version of OSX. I want to be able to boot from the Install DVD partition and the "Pre-Installed" Partition. I have successfully Imaged the Install DVD Partition and was able to boot from that partition once to install OSX on a computer without a DVD drive.
Problem now is that I can't boot from the partition, or I should say, I select it from the Sys Prefs and it will pass the grey screen to a the blue background and just get hung up. It never displays the dialog to select a language to begin the install.
I also can not boot from the Install DVD. It will show up in the Startup Disk in Sys Prefs but always ends up hanging.
I've tried booting using "Option" and it displays my Internal HD and then two icons for the Install DVD Partition on the External FW Drive. Neither one allows for me boot up.
Any ideas for what I may be missing?
    Thanks,
    Russ

It appears that if the Partition with OSX was installed from anything besides the Restore Disc, the Powerbook won't boot to it.
I think this is ridiculous, and if I've went wrong somewhere, someone please correct me.
    Thanks.

  • Won't boot from OSX DVD

I am running 10.4.8 on a MacBook Pro--suddenly it tells me I can't install this OS on this computer (?). Also, it won't boot from the Tiger DVD (all other DVD's work fine). I tried holding down "C) on startup and even the cmd-opt-shft-delete combination. Something strange here. I'm wanting to install X11 but can't get the DVD to work. What can I try?

You cannot install a prior version of OS X on any Mac unless you: a. Do and Erase and Install; or, b. Do an Archive and Install. However, neither of these is needed to install X11. Insert the OS X Installer Disc One (gray label) that came with your computer. Locate the Additional Software package and double-click on it. When the installer loads you can select the items you want to install by placing a check in the box beside the item's name in the list box. Check the X11 box then click on the Install button.
You can only boot an Intel Mac using the installer disc that came with the computer (gray label.) Retail installers (black label) will not work with Intel Macs.

  • Moving video from small dvd discs into macbook

I have a Sony Handycam with the small non-standard discs. There is no firewire port on the handycam so I cannot transfer my video to my Mac. (only a/v and USB) No one can seem to help me. Help!

u can't insert small CD's into the mac optical drive. It only takes regular size CD's as you may know.
Your option - get an external CD/DVD rom - connect via USB port - and off you go. My external DVD ROM takes the smaller size cd's and works great.
    Hope this helps

  • Transfer a movie from a DVD to Digital tape

After completing an iDVD movie project, I burned it to a DVD, but unfortunately then deleted all the movie and iDVD data to make room for subsequent projects.
I noted a glaring textual error when later playing the DVD - too late to edit.
Is it possible to download the movie from the DVD disc to digital camera tape using the firewire - the reverse process used to originally build the iMovie data?
    Ewald

Sure, that's possible. But if the idea is to correct the text, you'll probably suffer less quality loss if you convert/uncompress the digital files on the DVD into a format that you can work with. Basically, you'll be converting VOB files to MPEG-2 and then uncompressing them to DV Stream format (.dv) that iMovie likes. Do a search in this forum for "Streamclip" or "converting DVD" to get some ideas for workflow steps.

If the "it" refers to a compressed (zipped) spreadsheet that you downloaded, the ".ods" extension is used by LibreOffice and probably OpenOffice (which are free versions of MS Office) for spreadsheets, which would suggest that wherever you're getting that "Excel" file from has switched to one of those programs. I've tried opening an .ods file from LibreOffice using MS Office 2013 for Windows and it does open though with a warning that some things have been changed. I don't know if Office for Mac can normally open .ods files. But if your need is to just open .ods files, take a look at LibreOffice.

  • I upgraded my Mac from OSX 10.5.8 to Snow Leopard and then to Mountain Lion 10.8.2.  I did have Microsoft Office for Mac 2004 in my applications and now get a message "can't open Office because Power PC applications are no longer supported."

I just upgraded my MAC from OSX 10.5.8 to Snow Leopard and then to Mountain Lion 10.8.2.  When I try to access my Microsoft Office for MAC (2004 edition) files I am getting a message "can't open Office because Power PC applications are no longer supported.  How can I access all of my save Word documents?  I just want to be able to retrieve all of my documents that were in Microsoft Office for Mac (2004).  If I purchase the newest version of MS office for Mac from Apple will I be able to retrieve my old documents?

Use any number of free alternatives to your nearly decade old version of MS Office.
    Consider
    LibreOffice (donation-supported)
    NeoOffice (free)
    OpenOffice (free)
In addition to the above I also recommend Apple's Pages ($19.99). I use OpenOffice and Pages and have been completely Microsoft - free for years. Life is better without Microsoft.
