Upgrading 1st Gen to run Mavericks?

hi all.
i have first generation mac pro where i am running a bunch of boot camp installations and i am stuck on Lion due to (presumably) processor or firmware or some other limitations.
i realize there is a new mac pro coming out but i am not excited to deal with the first generation of any new machine - plus i do not want to spend a ton of time reconfiguring things in the event that i have to port all my hard drives to new and different hard drives.
does anyone know if i can somehow simply upgrade my existing machine and run Mavericks or is this silly and/or not possible?

You can run a special version of 10.7, and that is the end of the line for those Mac pro models released before 2008.
There is a developer-caliber hack to add the required EFI-64 firmware in RAM, but it is not something you want to use for production -- it seems to take a fair amount of "fiddling" to keep it running.

I am running an airport network via my imac and the rest of the computers, as well as two iphone 3GS phones can see it, but my 1st Gen iphone now gives me the error "can not scan for wireless networks". OK. There are reports of bad wifi chips, but lets try some more things first.
I assume your router is set to b/g compatible & not "n" only, correct? The iphone only works on g. Next, try this: Shut down the WiFi, and turn off "Ask to Join Networks". Then turn the iPhone completely off, by holding the top button down until the red slider came up, slid it off, and wait a few moments.
Turn the phone back on, then turn on the WiFi, and then "Ask to Join Networks".
See if that helps.

Can't install iWork on 1st Gen MBP running 10.6.8

I have a 1st generation MacBook Pro running OS 10.6.8. I tried downloading iWork from the App Store and I'm given this message: Keynote can't be installed on New HD because Mac OS X version 10.7.4 or later is required. This seems odd given I had a previous version of iWork installed before having to completely reinstall the OS. Now that I have a newer OS and I wish to upgrade (and pay for) the newer version of iWork I can't. Any thoughts?

If you had a version of iWorks installed then YOU HAD a DVD of iWorks. So find that DVD and reinstall from that. Then you may be able to update it to the newest versions that will run on Snow Leopard from Software Update.

Cannot upgrade 1st Gen iPod Touch to iPhone OS 3

My brother-in-law has a first-generation iPod Touch that is currently running iPhone OS 2.2.1 (I know, he should have upgraded to 3.0 a year ago). In iTunes 8.2.1, when his iPod Touch is plugged in, it identifies that there is an upgrade to iPhone OS 3, but that he must first download iTunes 9.2.1. After installing the new version of iTunes (9.2.1), iTunes no longer identifies that there is an update for his iPod Touch when it is plugged in -- it states that 2.2.1 is the most recent version.
We tried uninstalling iTunes and re-installing 8.2.1. We got the exact same results. We spent a bit of time on Google and these discussion boards, but couldn't find a similar issue.
Any ideas on how to get iPhone OS 3 on his first-generation iPod Touch?

Upgraded 1st gen. ipod touch to 3.1.3 (7E18) now I can not acess my wi-fi

I have just upgraded my ipod touch to version 3.1.3 (7E18) and now I can not access my wi-fi connection, which I just accessed before doing the update. I have a 1st generation touch. Is there a bug in the program? I did a full restore and my problem persists. If there is a bug; how can I get back to the previous version? I need my internet connection in this equipment. Thanks!

Started from scratch, restarted again ipod, computer and modem and finally was able to access the net.

Why upgrade 1st gen iPod Touch to 3.1.3 when apps aren't available?

I just upgraded a family member's iPod Touch to 3.1.3 because I wanted her to be able to use basic apps. However, as soon as the $5 upgrade was completed, I am not finding any apps under iOS 4 that will run. My question is:
1. How do I sort apps on the App Store to find any possible working apps?
2. If there are no apps that run 3.1.3, why in the world does Apple still sell the (obviously useless) upgrade?

There a few app that sill work with 3.1.3 but not 2.X
There is no way to sort/search the App store for compatible apps.

Can't sync apps to 1st gen ipod touch

I have a 1st gen ipod touch and can no longer sync apps. My itunes says that the software is not compatible even though i have the latest updates. Is this a lost cause or can i fix it.

I too have a 1st gen and running 3.1.3. I've tried to download various apps and get the banner warning. What really is disappointing is the fact 2nd gen and up is supported. There really wasn't much of a time difference in the release dates so this is another example of apple FORCING it''s bread and butter to keep shelling out cash. I've resorted to just using this thing for what it is. A MP3 player. When it dies, I'll start using my Android phone for music. My 4 teens have all been told, make your ipod last as I'm not buying a replacement. Those who have drunk their kookaid I hope suffer a hardware failure when it matters most. Shame on you apple for treating your customers this way. . I've had enough and I hope you lose more market share as time goes on to a more open and as far as I'm concerned, a better produce, Android. Using 1st gen airport express with mavericks

When I upgraded to Mavericks, the updated Airport Utility dosen't support my version of airport express 1st generation. The old version of airport utility is not supported by mavericks. There is a version on the website that appears it may work, but I can't install it because their is a new version already installed. I cannot delete the new version, because the sytem blocks it with a message that it is necessary for the operating system.

Mavericks certainly will support a 1st Gen version of the AirPort Express, so chances are......you do not have a 1st Gen Express.
Please check the model number on the side of your Express. It starts with an "A" followed by four numbers.
A 1st Gen version is A1264. I imagine that you have A1084 or A1088, which are much older versions than the 1st Gen "n" Express,which was introduced in 2008.
Witht the A1084 or A1088, you will need to use another Mac running Leopard, Snow Leopard, or another PC to be able to administer the older AirPorts.

Should I upgrade iPad (1st Gen) from iOS 4.2.1 to iOs 5.1.1?

I am using iPad (Wi-Fi only) from last 2 years mainly for web surfing and emails. iOS 5 is sure slick and tempting. Should I upgrade or not? I dont want iPad to get sluggish after update, in that way I am better off with iOS 4.2.1 running smoothly on it. Help pls.!

Upgrading my 1st Gen Mac Pro

I have a Mac Pro 1.1, Dual-Core Intel Xeon, 2.66 GHz with 11GB of RAM. Graphics card is ATY,RadeonX1900.
I mainly use it for video/photo work, FCP, After Effects, Photoshop. It's starting to run quite slow. In Final Cut Pro I have trouble playing anything back smoothly within the timeline. I am assuming this is because as video technology improves (HD, higher bit rates etc) by Mac Pro has not kept up.
What is the best way to upgrade my Mac Pro so that it runs more smoothly and does not cost as much as buying a new machine? Should I get the processor changed? Is that possible? If so, which one? Or would changing the graphics card do the job?
Any advice would be great.

I find it sad that The hatter is right that so many view without any suggestions. I have a similar issue that I'm dealing with and my budget does not alow me to purchase a new MacPro. I'm also looking for a new graphics card to edit High Def video on my 1st Gen MacPro 2006. I tried the ATI 5770 but somehow forgot to notice that it requires Snow Leopard 10.6.x to work properly. I need something that works with Tiger, Leopard and Snow Leopard due to software issues and also with Windows XP SP2 via Bootcamp witch is on the Tiger HDD.
I'm so confused as to what to purchase since it's all so very technical for me but I may need to find an Nvidia 8800GT because I want two DVI port on the same card that would work on Tiger (10.4.x) and at least 512 MB on the card.
Anyway, good luck at making a decision at your end.

I have the same problem. It was working fine up until the last update for iTunes 11.0.2
Here's the details:
I have an Apple TV - first Gen and up until a couple of weeks ago, was regularly playing sync'd iTunes music and videos through it on a daily basis.
I see other devicess showing up in the "Devices" list in the left panel of iTunes (such as iPad, iPhone, etc.)
AppleTV used to be there consistently, then disappeared upon update to 11.0.2
Apple TV also does not show up in the devices tab under the Preferences window.
I have tried multiple suggestions on the support forum but none have worked.
Apple TV is able to access the network, is on the same network as the iMac with iTunes library connected. Both are connected to network via ethernet cable (not wifi). Both are able to access the internet (apple tv plays movie prieviews and gets updates). Using the Terminal app, I am able to ping the apple TV's IP number from the iMac and get a successful return.
Both have latest software downloads.
I have tried cold-booting the apple TV, resetting the router, and verified in the router device list that both imac and appleTV are listed as active, un-blocked connections.
I don't intend to buy an Apple TV 2nd gen or later (since I bought this one and it's not working now due to software update, what guarantee that a later model won't generate the same problem later.
One last wrinkle, I have a 2 year old and a 5 year old who are jonesing hard for their "dance party" fix.
Have you ever wronged a two year old?

I'm having the exact same issue. Nothing in the "Music" menu except "My Music". I Noticed it this afternoon when I woke my Apple TV from standby. The disappearance, in my case, was not related to a reset. My Apple TV has not been reset since the power went out here several weeks ago. Though I obviously don't know for sure, I'm guessing that it's some kind of store problem and we most likely won't be able to correct it from our end.

Music Gone from 1st Gen Apple TV after iTunes upgrade to 10.1.1 (4)

I use a 1st Gen Apple TV to store and play all my music throughout my home. It's perfect for that because I don't have to stream from my computer (as with 2nd Gen Apple TV) and can control the music from all over the house from the Remote App on my iPad and iPhone. After I upgraded to iTunes 10.1.1 this week I synced my Apple TV with my computer to add some new music to it from iTunes. All of my music promptly disappeared from my Apple TV. It may have still been there, but didn't show in iTunes on my computer or on my iPad or iPhone remote apps.
My first thought was that I might have to do a restore on the Apple TV and then re-sync with my computer's iTunes. Before doing that, however, I simply re-synced all of my music to the Apple TV from my computer. It worked and now all of the music is available again.

let it do it's restart and clear synced data
set it up to link with the same computer once more
and let it sync the data once more
