Upgrading 3Gs from 3.0.1 to 4.0. Don't want 4.0.1 or 4.0.2!!

Hello All.
I currently have a 3Gs running iOS version 3.0.1. It has never been jailbroken, I just haven't upgraded because I haven't had a computer in a long while. I just recently got a macbook pro 13" (09 model) and would like to upgrade from iOS version 3.0.1 to 4.0.0. I don't want to upgrade to 4.0.1 or 4.0.2. I downloaded the .ipsw 4.0 file, but when I option click on update and select the proper file, I get the "the iphone could not be updated, the device isn't eligible for the requested build" message. I searched around and learned that the apple servers no longer accept restoring to an older OS. I, however, am not trying to restore to an older OS, I am just trying to update an older OS to a new one, just not the NEWEST one. Is this possible?

And you HAVEN'T heard bad things about 4.0? You haven't been paying attention, then. There as many, if not more complaints about 4.0 compared to 4.0.1 and 4.0.2.
Is there no way to force it to upgrade to only 4.0? What about putting it in DFU mode, would that help?
There is no way to upgrade to 4.0 without jailbreaking the phone.

You can use these steps to open your Pages documents with the previous version:
Permanently change the document’s app
Select the document and choose File > Get Info.
In the Info window, click the triangle next to “Open with” to expand the section.
Choose an app from the pop-up menu, or choose Other to locate a different app.
If you want to use that app to open all documents of the same type as the current document and created by the same app, click Change All.
Temporarily change the document’s app
You can open a document in a different app without changing the app that normally opens it. Use either of these methods:
Control-click the document, choose Open With, and then choose the app you want to use.
Drag the document to the app’s icon in the Dock or in the Finder.

How do I update iphone 3GS 4.2.1 to ios 5.1 (don't want ios 6!)

I have an iphone 3GS on 4.2.1 and want to upgrade to ios 5.1 but on iTunes there is now only the option to upgrade to ios 6 which I don't want as I have read that although it's available for the 3GS, a lot of the features are not useable on the 3GS and it might slow the phone down etc. Is there any way I can get ios 5.1 or 5.1.1 on my 3GS? I thought I read somewhere that the only way to do it was to go into a phone shop and they would be able to upgrade it for me, but can't find the page now where I read that so I might be mistaken! Does anyone know if this is the case?
I am planning on upgrading my phone to an iphone 5 eventually but still have over 12mths left on my current contract (was an Android contract but having got fed up with the phone I am now using my sim in my old iphone 3GS but need to finish the contract before I can get a new phone!) O2 changed my data back to iphone data and everything is working fine on the phone except that most of the apps I want to use need at least ios 4.3 or 5.0 so if I am going to upgrade it I might as well get the 5.1 but I can't seem to find a way to do it. Has anyone else needed to do this recently and been successful?

You're overthinking this too much. Your phone will still have all the same features it has now as well as all the same featuers it has when running iOS 5 plus more. Just install 6 and move on.

If you forgot the passcode for the lock screen, follow this article, connect in recovery mode iOS: Unable to update or restore and restore: iPhone and iPod touch: Wrong passcode results in red disabled screen
If you cannot remember the passcode, you will need to restore your device using the computer with which you last synced it. This allows you to reset your passcode and resync the data from the device (or restore from a backup). If you restore on a different computer that was never synced with the device, you will be able to unlock the device for use and remove the passcode, but your data will not be present. Refer to Updating and restoring iPhone, iPad and iPod touch software.
If you can't remember the password for your encrypted backup, you'll have to start all over again:

iTunes and encrypted backups
In the iTunes Summary screen, select "Encrypt iPhone backup" if you want to encrypt the information stored on your computer when iTunes makes a backup. Encrypted backups are indicated by a padlock icon, and a password is required to restore the information to iPhone. You may want to write down the password for your backup and store it in a safe place. If you use a Mac, when you set a password you can select to store the password in the keychain. With iOS 4 and later, you can transfer the iOS keychain backup to a new device if you encrypt the backup.
Warning: If you encrypt an iPhone backup in iTunes and then forget your password, you will not be able to restore from backup and your data will be unrecoverable. If you forget the password, you can continue to back up and use the device, however you will not be able to restore the encrypted backup to any device without the password. You do not need to enter the password for your backup each time you back up or sync.
If you cannot remember the password and want to start again, you must perform a full software restore and when iTunes prompts you to select the backup from which to restore, choose set up as a new device.

How can I find an audio book on my 4th gen shuffle? Can't find it even when it's set to play in order. Tried setting it to Sync audiobooks but a warning says 'do you want to remove existing songs from other itunes library? and I don't want to do this.

Did you already load the audiobook manually (by dragging it to the shuffle)? To confirm that the audiobook is on the shuffle...
Select the shuffle in the iTunes sidebar. If the sidebar (along left side of window) is not visible, from the menu bar, under View, select Show Sidebar.
Click the small triangle to the left of the shuffle name (in the sidebar) to drop down its content list, indented below the shuffle. Click on Audiobooks there. To the right, your audiobook(s) should be listed.
NOTE: if you don't see Audiobooks on the content list, there are no audiobooks on the shuffle.
When you turn ON the shuffle, you are playing from the default All Songs list. Audiobooks (and podcasts) do not play from the All Songs list. You need to use VoiceOver to select the audiobook from the playlist menu. This document explains how to set up and use VoiceOver on your shuffle

What's the best practice to upgrade 3GS from 3.1.2 to 4.2.1

I was reading the thread which was very helpful:

But there is a slight difference here with my situation:
-- I'm planning to upgrade from 3.1.2 to 4.2.1, yet in that thread the guy was trying to upgrade from 4.1
And recently a friend told me he had an error 1013 during upgrade. Google also mentioned another error code, 1015, related to upgrading to 4.2.1
1. Does anyone know what exactly caused Error 1013 and 1015?
2. what is the best practice to upgrade from 3.1.2? Upgrading to 4.1 first and then upgrade from 4.1 to 4.2.1? Will that eliminate the occurring of these itunes errors?
*(Yes, I know apple has officially terminated supporting upgrading an iphone firmware to anything below 4.3. But can we just discuss my questions hypothetically?)*

I have a Mac 10.2.8 and Firefox 2.0.0.20. What is the highest upgrade I can get for this Mac because I don't want to have to upgrade my Mac or buy a new one?

I can't access certain links from sites, especially with a lot of graphics. I get messages to the effect that I need to upgrade my browser. But then the update says I need a 10.3 Mac or higher. Also any site with a lot of graphics takes forever to download. Is there an intermediate update that I could use instead for my Mac?

How can I view my iCloud contacts from someone else's iPhone? I don't want to change their phone settings.

Yesterday I ran into a problem that was eye opening to say the least. I could not not access my contacts in order to find a friend's phone number. No one remembers phone numbers any more. God knows I don't.
I was on a jetski and it broke down. I was stranded at a dock miles away. I needed to contact my friend to tell him (a) I'm ok, (b) where I was, (c) to bring a tow. Of course I had no phone on me because it would have gotten soaked.
People were kind enough on the dock to let me use their smart phones to attempt to retreive the phone number and call for help. But I quickly discovered that it is impossible.
On an iPhone, I tried to use their Safari browser to go to www.icloud.com. When you do that, it simply redirects you to the apps. But it isn't my phone, and their apps are logged in to the owner's accounts. I wasn't about to update the settings in a stranger's phone.
One guy let me try his iPad with Cellular. Same problem as the iphones. It would not let me use www.icloud.com. It insisted that I use the native iOS apps.
On an Android, www.icloud.com would simply refuse to work. It would say it was not supported.
The question I have is: How can I view my contacts from someone else's smart phone in an emergency situation?
Second question: Why can't I use www.icloud.com on a smart phone's web browser like I can on regular computer?
I got lucky. I happened to know my mom's home number. Many hours later she was home and I was able to use a phone to call her. She brought up www.icloud.com on her home computer, logged on as me, and read me the phone number I was seeking. But what are the chances of being able to call a trusted person who has access to a computer to do this for you?

Without "pretending" to be yourself on the other phone (change settings) there's nothing else you can do.
iOS devices are meant to be single user and can't view iCloud.com the same way a Mac or PC can do.
You need to find a desktop or laptop machine (Mac or PC) to log in at iCloud.

If the problem re-occurs, select the content which is causing a problem and use the 'Report a problem' button in Your Purchase History using your computer.
Try deleting the problematic book (electing to remove original file if/when prompted) and then re-downloading the file from the iBook store.

Of course it is safe, it's what you are supposed to do. The only time you might have an issue is if you have already synced to a different computer. As long as there is at least one contact already on your Mac, when you first sync you will be given the option to merge the contacts.

Is it possible to manage multiple apple ID's from 1 e-mail account? I don't want users of an ihone to mess about with the apple store

I am the telecom manager of a small company and I want to manage the iPhones in the company myself ( 7 pieces ) so that a user can not mess about with the phohe and the app store. I already found out how to block some of the functionality of the phone. I don't want to setup appleID's per users e-mail address because the confirmation of the apple ID will always be sent to the users of the phone.

Nope. You can only have one credit card attached to an account at a time. Its not that big of a deal to use two accounts, users do this all the time. Create the second account(UK Account) in iTunes on your computer...sign out of your Italian account first. Then authorize your computer for this new account: Store>Authorize this computer. Then sync your phone. Now, to switch accounts on your phone: Settings>Store...tap the ID shown...sign out...then sign back in with the ID you want to use.

I'm emigrating to New Zealand on Monday (I've left it late, I know), and I have an iPad 2 and an iPhone which I intend to basically use as an iPod Touch for the forseeable future.
I've downloaded hundereds of apps, lots of music and some video and I'm wondering how I can have that all available to me in NZ? Should I try to put it on a hard drive? Will I just be able to access it on the iCloud? What about when I get a new bank account etc, and need to transfer my iTunes account to NZ - will I lose my stuff then or what?! Obviously it's cost me a few quid over the years so I would not be happy about losing all my apps!
I'd be very grateful if anyone had any ideas...

Firefox keeps blocking my webpage from changing to a new page - I don't want it to do this. How to I stock the blocks?

When working in several different programs (Auctiva is one) I get a message that Firefox blocked my webpages attempt to direct me to a new page. Sometimes I can click allow, but sometimes the message is gone so fast i have No Option. In most cases this page switch is necessary for what I am doing to happen - in Auctivia my listing won't post to eBay for hours if it can't switch pages. How can I stop Firefox for blocking these page switches. It is happening more and more. I have adjusted everything I can think of in settings, but nothing helps.
